This was in response to shoplifting!? SHOPLIFTING!?

I guess that was on me for assuming the context would make this better and not 100 times worse.

57

But, didn't you read? The officers said that the car may have went in their general direction.

Stolen diapers for the one year old that the police slaughtered is justified to kill a black person.

God I fucking hate this world.

FFVII Revelation is coming. I'm stealing the black fucking materia and calling meteor myself

24

No this was the response because she was black and shoplifting. It was 100% a race thing.

Accused of stealing 20 dollars worth of diapers? Death penalty without trial for you and the occupants of your vehicle.

Also, you want the footage that your tax dollars paid for? Fuck you.

338

That's one thing, another question is, what kind of society we are living in where a mother is forced to steal diapers?

I also see stores that put baby formulas behind lock.

Those are not some luxurious items, those things people would only steal if they had no other choice.

Technical correction: She's accused of driving her vehicle towards officers, which they used to justify the shooting.

Disclaimer: I am not saying the shooting was justified. I know nothing about where the officers were or how she was driving.

5

Wow so the extraducial execution of innocent babies is justified for the petty crime of shoplifting in Mississippi? That is fuckin crazy. The attorney general is a demonic souless hag.

290

The crime was not the shoplifting, it was being black. None of this is about the diapers.

4
lemmy.ca

in what SHIT HOLE country do 'cops' draw weapons for stolen diapers?!?!

the diapers were insured with loss prevention, deadly force was NOT justified.

BLACK LIVES MATTER

209

Also, if you steal diapers and nothing else then maybe, JUST MAYBE you probably just can't afford them despite them being rather essential in raising a child. Which doesn't make it a non-crime, but it's probably a sign that you're actually in need.

And here I was thinking that raping kids, evading tax and making your country the lapdog of Russia should be punished more severely than stealing diapers out of necessity.

12

Exactly my thought process, especially since they haven't produced any evidence of shoplifting and the cop shot a kid

That and imagine the political power they suddenly have if they do start to turn out at 85% while whites are still sitting at 55%.

Georgia is 33% black, 57% white.

Georgia's population is 11.3 million, 77.8% 18 and older is 8.79m.

At the rates in that chart that would be 1.07m black voters, 2.5m white.

85% black turnout would put them at 2.47m votes.

Do you know why we’re not pushing that percentage? People need to work. Sometimes two jobs, especially somewhere like Mississippi where the minimum wage is still $7.25. People can’t take a day off. Last time I voted in Mississippi, I was in line for 2 hours, and that was at like 11am because I was lucky to have a desk job that let me work from home and understood the importance of voting. Minimum wage jobs do not get that.

So glad I live in Washington state now where everyone gets their ballot mailed to them 2 weeks in advance. For general elections, we’re about 70-80% turnout.

8
Tjareply

I think preventing police from killing your children justifies missing two hours of work. Especially if it would cause a grand total of $14.50 gross income loss. Or fight to have elections on Sundays, like 80%+ of democracies do.

But I've spent some time close to France, so it might be their influence.

But if missing two hours of work causes you to lose your minimum wage job, then it's not just a $14.50 loss.

Not just shoplifting but literally stole a pack of diapers. People don't steal diapers for fun, that's obviously someone who was out of options, and took the only option left to her

Edit to add: apparently she didn't even steal the diapers! Some customer said they thought she did and she didn't have the receipt (because who grabs the receipt when they go and buy a single consumable item?)

Shops are also insured so it doesn't even affect the owner. Some super rich insurance company gets to pay for a new pack of diapers.

Compare this with what's going on in France, where thousands of immigrants are rioting and burning down stores and cars. Millions of dollars in damage. The police there still just use tear gas and rubber bullets and haven't killed anyone.

America is in its own league of police brutality.

25
thelemmy.club

We haven't seen the body warn yet, but the issue is why is shooting at her automatically justified in this context? Driving at officers or not. Why did officers put themselves in the position to be driven at, why not just tail her and pull her over, why not get her registration and go to her address. There are far more alternative options than (as seems to the standard) going for maximum force first.

28
bampopreply
lemmy.world

why is shooting at her automatically justified

The cop saw her holding up a baby. He was shooting at the baby.

Presumably this was justifiable self defense because the baby was the reason the mother needed diapers and if she hadn't needed diapers the cop would not be fearing for his life at that moment

12

We are being very sarcastic, the disassociation helps me process a tragedy like this. There is absolutely no context that would make this justifiable, the fact that a judge still deemed it so shakes me to my core.

had stolen a pack of diapers. The women exited the store with the child as officers arrived, entered their vehicle and began to leave the parking lot. Officers drew their weapons, and Vellesiya Wiley lifted her son up to show the officers that a child was in the car. One officer fired into the vehicle, killing the baby as she held him.

stealing diapers or bread, should be a lesser crime, than stealing jewelry or clothing. Neither should justify shooting when running/driving away. If they put their hands up holding a baby, they are unlikely driving super fast, and may in fact doing step 1 of surrendering.

Even if a diaper thief were to use a hostage as human shield, shooting is only legally justified in Israel, where hannibal directive extended to civilians is part of their non-negotiation hatred towards the "palestinian problem", and where Mississippi has and may still view violent oppression as the preferred "solution" to their racial tensions.

The only possible reason to shoot a thief imo is if they perhaps stole firearms or explosives, as one could reason they are stealing them imwkth I tent to cause great harm. But fucking diapers? Hell a car? It's just stuff 🫪 not to mention these stores all have theft insurance anyways!! Or it's been accounted for (see inventory "shrink")

I often find myself sharing similar thoughts when reading comments that seem reasonable at first, but go off the deep end.

The Hannibal directive, is an official IDF protocol to kill captured soldiers. Oct 7th reaction included both mass shooting through civilian hostages on the day, and Helicopter mass firing on anyone running at the music festival. The genocidal bombing campaign that followed was specifically to avoid negotiations by exterminating hostages too.

So, your "tinfoil hat hasbara" bs disgustingly masks a far worse/extreme Israeli attitude towads "palestinian problem" than Mississipi's historical attitudes towards "dealing with the negro problem", which is if you lynch a few regardless of any guilt, it will teach the rest of them to stay in line.

Why do they even send cops to a shoplifting scene? Let the store deal with it. They have cameras, security guards, insurance.

24

That's what I don't get. Everything in the fucking store is insured! A $20 pack of diapers is insured! The store will get that back, take it up as a loss.

Sure you don't want to encourage theft, but shit happens. Oops someone accidentally walked out with one item. Sure send someone out to inform the customer, maybe they legit missed it. If you can't locate the customer or they already started to drive away, welp put that under accidental loss. It's not that different from someone accidentally dropping a jar of pickles off the shelf. The store isn't going to call the cops because of an accidental jar drop.

But we all know it wasn't the accidental shoplifting, it's because she was black. That's the ONLY reason why the cops were called. Because of the color of her skin. And then the trigger happy racist as fuck cop saw that and shot first and never asked questions. It's past time there were serious fucking consequences for these fucking piece of shit pigs (cops).

I'd fucking boycott that fucking store and the owner. Force corporate to act over this shit.

The Buddhist perspective is that we live in Samsara, which is the cycles of suffering perpetuated by craving, aversion, and delusion. That's the simplified version, but it really goes much deeper. But on the other side of the coin, they say that attainment involves the realization that samsara and nirvana are the same, and that the only thing that changes is your perspective. They're not different realms.

There are also different realms in Buddhism, ranging from various levels of hell to the world we live in and on up to various levels of heaven. But those are separate from the distinction between samsara and nirvana, and secondary to them, because an enlightened being could live in a hell realm without losing nirvana, and a deluded being could live in heaven and still be caught up in samsara.

The Hindu perspective is that we all live in Maya (illusion), and that the ultimate attainment is moksha (liberation), meaning you no longer have to be reborn into the world of Maya.

There are other distinctions, such as how karma functions and how it affects rebirth; and what dharma means and how it relates to karma. There's also of course the key distinction between essential selfhood or no essential selfhood (i.e. emptiness), but that part isn't as relevant to the discussion of whether or not "we live in hell."

I'd say the closest thing to what you're thinking of is probably samsara, but it is different.

There's also the Kali Yuga, which is a Hindu concept, and has more to do with the era rather than the realm. It's basically the last octile of the cycle before it reaches the absolute lowest of the low, and represents about 12,000 years of accelerating degradation and depravity before the final destruction of the world as we know it. Only after the cycle reaches the nadir is when the world begins to recover and rebuild/improve.

This is the same police station whose chief was just fired last month, for, get this, extremely vile racism.

Just a wild coincidence, I'm sure. Also just a wild coincidence that the racist chief of police didnt punish the child murder when he was caught being racist:

Since Vanderford took over as chief, Foster has separately faced at least two complaints that he used racially offensive language with co-workers, Mississippi Today reported in July and August. In the months leading up to the shooting, Foster referred to a Black officer as a “Black motherfucker” and directed another derogatory remark toward a white co-worker who has a daughter with a Black woman, according to internal department complaints.

There’s no indication that Vanderford took any disciplinary action against Foster, who was allowed to remain on patrol.

3

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the shooting, alleged on the day of the shooting that “the driver drove in the direction of the officers, almost striking one.”

As of press time, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety has released none of the video surveillance of the shooting of Kohen Wiley, neither the body-cam footage nor the overhead video from the Walmart parking lot where Wiley was shot. You definitely don't need all that. Cloth diapers predate modern in-home washing machines. I had the "privilege" of being poor and raised in cloth diapers, back when food stamps were paper instead of a debit account, and if my parents could manage it there's nothing stopping people today.

Also, what a stupid position. "How dare you suggest people take some responsibility for their waste instead of choosing the most convenient, selfish option at every turn! Don't you know the world was invented five years ago and old-fashioned sustainable solutions literally don't exist?"

How many diapers did that baby steal? Are we even surprised? It’s Mississippi. People there still believe Emmet Till deserved to die.

I have got to say that I am in fact surprised. What kind of shithole country approves the use of lethal force in situations where violence can be avoided? As a European I can't read this and say "well it's probably just one of the shitty states." I'm sorry but I wouldn't feel safe in any corner of a country where this is allowed.

I can't imagine moving to a country that just shrugs off the killing of a person because they were potentially trying to flee a crime scene. The fact that the person was a baby and that the crime was stealing one pack of diapers doesn't make this any better or worse, but I suppose that it does reveal just how bizarre and deranged the people who rule this country are.

Racism plus culture of using guns to solve problems that didn’t need guns to be used to solve them.

It's times like these I sympathize with people who want to believe hell exists.

One of the most horrible videos I've ever seen was a little PoC kid with a backpack on (elementary school-aged) hiding behind a car because a cop car happened to drive by and he didn't want to be harmed.

ACAB

Wtf thought this was clickbait and they maybe responded a shooting accidently killing the baby they did not see but wtf is that

Not even close.

The woman was accused of stealing diapers. Left the store, cops rolled up and shot her through her baby.

I think there might be ways to avoid getting struck by a vehicle without shooting a toddler, but I guess we'll never be sure now.

One year old is not a toddler. It's a baby.

If it can walk it's a toddler, but that's a weird thing to get hung up on in this context. Is it morally any different to kill an infant or a four-year-old? (It's not, it's unimaginably heinous either way.)

I guess I'm the only one who thinks it's even worse to shoot a baby.

With all due respect, I think you're hung up on the wrong thing, and I hope you're not trying to imply that I'm trying to downplay the seriousness of the issue by saying it's a toddler. It doesn't matter of it's a baby or a toddler. One innocent child getting shot is far too many.

I'm not hung up on it. And no, I wasn't trying to say that. I just like to be accurate, and it does sound somehow even worse if you accurately say that it was a baby.

We can be pedantic about it or we can agree that this whole thing is absolute bullshit.

I really wish I was surprised instead of just angry. But no, of fucking course a white AG in Mississippi sees nothing wrong with the extrajudicial police murder of a black infant over the theft of diapers. ACAB remains true, and I don't care if the cop believes they're in danger, they clearly have no idea what actual danger looks like, and they get paid putting everyone else in danger.

10

I wonder if having a black AG in Mississippi instead would have made a difference in this case?

2

I’ll vote for whoever makes a list of republicans and final solutions them

13

So the police content she tried to run them over with her child in her lap? It seems like holding her baby up to show the cops and having the child shot as well as the passenger would be consistent with shooting from the side. But I'm sure the cops wouldn't lie.

Officer: don't need any diapers now, do you? Now go return them before I charge you for child neglect for making me shoot him.

It's the newest in preventative policing.

You gotta kill the black kids before the gangs get to them.

This is the same reason your daughter (and son!) should get HPV vaccines long before they lose their v-card.

11

I wonder if those cops are anti-abortion...so much for "pro-life"!

9

Again and again I say, "Cops\ICE will kill you anyway." Defend yourself accordingly. With your gun, if that wasn't clear. I'd rather be a bullet riddled corpse than a clean one.

I always wonder how Texas can be such a shithole, but then I remember it his Mississippi for inspration. What a racist hellhole.

People also beat up Florida while sleeping on the evil shit coming out of Tennessee.

Don't forget about Oklahoma.

Honestly, just take any QOL stat and read off the bottom 10 states and they'll all be some bible belt shithole republican state
