[.ml users] How would describe your instance?

I might get hate because of my instance here, but in an attempt to better understand Lemmy I’m wondering if some of you can shed a light on why you chose this instance, what’s great about it, what could be better, is the instance rivalries something that affects your use of the platform or is it just background noise?

I’m not trying to start a fight or mud slinging, it would be good if several people could say their piece and nobody shame or attack them for it no matter how much you disagree.

I think they managed to anger 3 different instances at the same time. If they weren't doing such terrible comments would almost be impressive

After witnessing the downfall of Reddit, both because of enshittification and in the overall discourse, it felt silly to jump to another neoliberal community. I feel the same way about Blue Sky.

I don't care about instance rivalries at all. Reddit refugees fleeing the dismal quagmire that is the inevitable result of capitalist social media and going to the place MLs created as a direct response to those conditions, then criticizing MLs, is kind of amusing but that's all. I created a .world account first because I didn't know the lay of the land then realized I didn''t really feel like reading those same jokes, quips, puns, and slogans ad nauseum. I'm glad the architecture of lemmy allows me to choose a refuge where I don't feel crazy. I regret it took me so long to find my people.

I appreciate you coming here and asking this question.

I didn’'t really feel like reading those same jokes, quips, puns, and slogans ad nauseum.

this begs the question of why the neoliberals are here at all.

reddit/facebook/instagram/etc. will always have better bread and circuses so expecting to get it on lemmy is a lost cause to begin with and that lacking quality -- combined with efforts to minimize leftist narratives like piefed and tesseract -- means that they won't stay here for long.

so what are they looking for when the come here when they continue to insist on implementing the same enshitification that made reddit so insufferable?

I’m now seeing Harris apologia and people throwing Palestine and trans people under the bus at over at .world and its getting upvoted.

One of the few places on the English language side of the internet where racial abuse against not sufficiently self hating Chinese people isn't normalised.

I have seen very little xenophobia here on ml, if any. Sometimes I wander off to All, and it comes kind of crashing down how racist and bigoted the other places are. Yeah, this place is really well moderated.

33

Certain kinds of racism and bigotry are unfortunately highly normalised across much of the English language internet. It was nice to find a safe haven from it even if some still get through the gaps every now and then.

.ml is mostly fine. I picked it, because it gives me a good view of both Hexbear and Lemmygrad, because I like seeing what the lefty-side of Lemmy is up to (turns out its a lot more posts about Beans than you might expect), while also letting me see most of the mainstream of Lemmy, which has more of a traditional old-Reddit style culture, which is nice.

I enjoy politics posting, and discussion. But it's nice seeing other kinds of stuff too, and .ml let's me do both.

What annoys me, and this is a Lemmy-wide problem, is people making assumptions about other's beliefs based soley on their instance of choice. It's not helpful, it's not generative, and it's a waste of everyone's time.

Like, I don't think you should be getting hate, just because you're a .world user. As long as you're asking a question in good faith, and not being a shithead, I see no reason why you posing this here should be an issue ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Spot on. Taking countries as an analogy for fediverse instances, we shouldn't make all the citizens of those countries into an ideological monolith: there's always a diversity of views, even if some views are more predominant than others because they're encouraged from the top.

And above all we should not be alienating and unecessarily divisive to those who, with a little education and prodding in the right direction, will side with the majority of the world's workers. Our job is to make allies, patiently educate, and create more caring people.

I’m responding to you, with respect, knowing full well the eventual outcome will probably be that you instance ban me.

there's always a diversity of views, even if some views are more predominant than others because they're encouraged from the top.

How come you seem to allow communities who are moderated by a single user who repeatedly bans people just because they don’t like what someone says in an instant?

Our job is to make allies, patiently educate, and create more caring people.

Are you seeing your instance as a means to patiently persue a certain ideology rather than allowing free speech and open uninterupted and respectful discourse? This is a genuine question, but you’re welcome to ignore it.

I am one of the people you could have persuaded. I think you got very close, until yesterday. Hence this post. One of the mods blinked, and I what I saw what nothing but monolithic thinking, and as a worker, someone who is described by most people in my life as left, I have through the years become more pragmatic and I understand change is gradual and happens in stages. Pedulums swing.

The vast majority of people have good in their heart. Russians, Americans and of course the people from the Federated States of Micronesia. I don’t understand why we need this division, and though you decry it in your comment, through actions or inactions, communities and moderators on your instance are allowed to amplify this division.

To be instant banned for a few paragraphs. Then being name called by that mod, in a community without any rules, and then being banned with the reason ‘Zionist’ while I am just about 180º the opposite is not the way to persuade people like me.

You may have the right intentions, and I have had many people on .ml with whom I have had lovely exchanges. However, the fact is this prejudijice exists and I think at some point, if we actually care about MAU of the fediverse to get some uptake, instead of the current flatlining, having all instance admins setting aside their differences, perhaps making some apologies or demanding apologies, or just even listening to one another, could be a first step.

Your comment reminded me about what someone once said about my personal relationship with a close family member. I listed the challenges, how hard it was to communicate, how I was past the point of all hope to see it ever improving. Then the person said to me: “Good. So what are you going to do about it?”

Thanks for taking this on board in the spirit in which it was intended. And if you are somewhere involved in the development of this platform, thanks for your hard work.

Are you seeing your instance as a means to patiently persue a certain ideology rather than allowing free speech and open uninterupted and respectful discourse?

We have no obligation to platform pro-genocide, patriarchal, white supremacist, cissupremacist, homophobic, or otherwise oppressive speech, and more, we have a moral obligation to silence those bigoted groups, deprive them of their right to speak, and prevent them from spreading their harmful views, and not only for the mental health of our users, of whom many are members of those targeted groups, but because we know that its the modus operandi of these white-supremacist/bigoted groups to set up nazi bars on social media platforms to spread their views, get people to associate and agree with them, and grow. The correct answer has always been, and remains, to deny them a platform.

If other servers, following the line of reddit and other US social media companies, want to platform those views to increase ragebait engagement and their user counts, there's nothing we can do about that, but at least here we can think about the long-term mental health of our users, which is far more important than user counts.

Fediverse instances are like email servers, if they call something spam and don't want to host it, then that's their prerogative. Arguments for "free speech" do not require them to host what you want them to host.

We also don't buy the liberal notion of "free speech", and think that even if there was such a thing, liberal countries and spaces don't actually practice it. Much like all liberal countries have a long history of banning anti-capitalist / anti-imperialist speech, organizing, and communist political parties, the instance you're on also doesn't adhere to "free and open speech": they've blocked the most popular leftist instances in the fediverse (hexbear and lemmygrad), to shield their userbase from those views.

I don’t understand why we need this division, and though you decry it in your comment, through actions or inactions, communities and moderators on your instance are allowed to amplify this division.

We have a be respectful rule here, and we do enforce it with temp bans, however it is unavoidable that some people (especially when venturing outside of lemmy.ml), encounter extremely bigoted and pro-genocide takes, and that makes them understandably angry. Still, if you see people from our instance breaking that rule, then report it, and we'll get to it when we can.

How come you seem to allow communities who are moderated by a single user who repeatedly bans people just because they don’t like what someone says in an instant?

To be instant banned for a few paragraphs. Then being name called by that mod, in a community without any rules, and then being banned with the reason ‘Zionist’ while I am just about 180º the opposite is not the way to persuade people like me.

I don't know the circumstances, so you'd have to be more specific, linking examples. We made the modlog public, and its possible to link to every modded item to see what happened.

I listed the challenges, how hard it was to communicate, how I was past the point of all hope to see it ever improving. Then the person said to me: “Good. So what are you going to do about it?”

Despite ideological differences, and some loud users on other servers demanding more defederations, we actually have good relations with most other fediverse server admins and runners. We don't make demands on each other, each server has full autonomy to take mod actions on both local and federated users, and that autonomy is respected.

21

Thanks for laying that out.

Hours after my incident, you went in the same community and performed the same action as the community mod. Well, not the same, you used a temporary ban, which I believe is more appropriate. The reason you typed was “rule 1”, but the community doesn’t not list any rules. If you saw my comment you would have banned me too.

From a noob perspective, your communities would greatly benefit from having a “instance rules (linked here) apply”, as right now, a fresh new account wanders into your instance and has no idea, begins a good faith conversation, without realising they have wandered onto a platform where a viewpoint they see as just valid, is completely outlawed.

If I had known that, I would have not followed these communities let alone wasted time trying to have respectful discourse.

I like your email server analogy, I just think we need to have a slightly more universal approach to how the rules of the instance (and how much they matter) are communicated.

The people who are chronically online often assume new users understand the Fediverse or the inner complexities or history, but many see it as just the alternative to reddit, as seen in some responses in this thread. Some blame no doubt falls onto the mobile clients, which possibly need to be updated to allow the distinction between the instances to be clearer before a user views or posts in a community.

Thanks for allowing this discourse.

-3

Well run back to the instance that is a 501(c) (3) that's tax exempt, like churches, and possibly takes US federal money, and whinge. Surely a soothed ego and props for your troubles crucifixion is more productive than taking it in and actually learning from it.

What's the story with the bean posting? I'm new to the Lemmiverse.

7

Hexbear has a lot of vegans.
Vegans like beans.
"Beans" sounds sort of like "beanis" which sounds like "penis".
Hexbear has a comm committed to making bad posts and a general fondness for stupid humor (I guess most everyone does, just depends on what they consider humor).

These four conditions combined created a hurricane of beans.

10

I heard tall tales of "the tankie triad" when I first flew from reddit to lemmy.world (because it's the largest, and back then as a baby leftist I just wanted reddit without reddit you know?). I kinda floated between dbzer0, .world and .ml for specific communities (and because I really didn't understand how this works) for a while, but the more my understanding of Marxism and communism (and especially anti-imperialism) grew, the more I gravitated towards just the tankie triad. Now I mainly browse and engage on those.

I feel the largest issue between .worlders (and others) and .mlrs (and, more widely, between communists and non-communists) stems from that anti-imperialism, especially when it comes to our critical suport of modern Russia. We see the US-led western imperial hegemony to be the root-cause of all suffering on earth, and lend our critical support to states on the receiving end of that machine of violence even when those states are capitalistic themselves. NATO and the EU are also parts of this machine, and evidence shows these being the cause for the war in Ukraine. This evidence isn't necessarily evident from the get-go, especially if one has grown up in said western states (the amount of deprogramming one must go through is massive, believe me). I've been trying to limit painting every .world user as a clueless lib whenever one comes in to the comments, but some .worlders like to uncharitably paint us as idiots who haven't realized the USSR fell already.

idk, just my two cents

36
RiverRockreply

some .worlders like to uncharitably paint us as idiots who haven’t realized the USSR fell already.

Which is ironic, considering how many of them I see saying "comrade Trump" and talking about the KGB in the present tense.

It is very annoying to end up in an argument about modern day Russia with someone who you quickly realize only knows what they saw from watching Archer.

25

Yeah, I agree. And if any particular user comes into the conversation with, say, dehumanization and homophobia, that's absolutely not worth reasoning with in my opinion. But yes, listening to a few repeated arguments day in and day out gets real tired fast.

19

I think the most annoying thing about being in .ml is all the .world people who have like kneejerk reactions to anything you say and get hostile just because of your instance. I have used account on Lemmygrad, and Hexbear too. Lemmygrad was the most laid back and I really liked it but I wanted to dip my toes into wider lemmy (grad isn't federated with a lot of the more reactionary instances, which i like and is valid but causes me to not see certain things). Lemmy.ml is more like a normal social media site. It has the reactionaries, the liberals, etc. A lot of the interactions are negative and confrontational. But its also got a lot more content in general.

I don't use other social media from lemmy. Haven't for years now. So this is like my 1 cig a week allegory. Where I let myself have a bit of the slop.

32

.ml is a leftist instance focussed on non-Western POV conversations. Mostly on the victims of Western imperialism.

Elsewhere on the internet it's flooded with annoying people who believe their Western, primarily US based views should represent the entire world and will constantly tell you to adopt their political strategy which has seen tremendous succes over the past century (/s).

The US 'leftist's favorite pastime is condensendingly yell at people to stop criticizing their favorite Democrat politician so they get healthcare at the cost of genociding Brown Untermenschen which they don't care about because they're Americans and anyone outside of the USA may be sacraficed.

They throw a large tantrum when confronted with the fact people outside of the West or those in the West now have internet access, or when there are people agreeing with them.

Here on .ml you can have anti imperialist conversations without being constantly yelled at by people who cannot fathom the world moving on from US imperialism in a different way than by voting Democrat harder.

30

Love they did not reply to you're reasonable comment as they're attacking you while others questioning their terrible ideology elsewhere

2

It's one of the few actually leftist instances, as in having a principled anti-capitalist ideology, and many users are communists, viewing events through the lens of historical materialism instead of just feeling the vibes.

The "instance rivalry" stuff is just libs getting mad that we don't have vibes based politics and prioritise historical facts over their knee jerk responses.

29

When I joined, it was the only instance, but it was also useful that it was aggressively left-wing.

Before Lemmy, all the Reddit alternatives were Nazi bars, because everyone that got banned from Reddit congealed there. The Lemmy devs/admins banned anyone on sight who hinted at Nazi apologia and I don't think Lemmy would exist today, if they didn't.

But yeah, folks also assign way too much meaning to the instance. I don't have to hold hands with my admins when I log onto lemmy.ml. I don't have to agree with them. I barely interact with lemmy.ml users, because I just browse /all. And that generally looks the same as on other instances.
It's just a way to access the wider threadiverse. If the lemmy.ml server is down, I log into my alt account on another instance and the experience is virtually indistinguishable, I just don't have my block lists there...

28

I chose .ml specifically because I wanted to be on a Marxist-Leninist instance, because .ml is maintained by Lemmy's developers, and because most instances aren't defederated from it so I have access to whatever content I wish to see. I actually just browse local 99% of the time since I find the content here plenty engaging on its own. It reminds me of the old forum days, before modern social media watered everything down. I particularly value being more exposed here to the perspectives of the global south, and non-USians generally. USians aren't a majority of the world, so we shouldn't expect our views to be normative.

26

besides nazi content, the admins of lemmy.ml don't decide what i can and can't see via de-federation meanwhile the admins on lemmy.world and most other instances allow the same sort of brigading that reddit does to make content they don't like go away into obscurity.

24

I just picked a big one and never thought about the user base

23
lemmy.ml

lol, just now noticed them saying shit like "This is a rather neurodivergent absolutist approach hoping for a utopia any smart person know is not achieved within the parameters of today’s power structure." and "You don’t even need a tinfoil hat to see that if .ml is indeed russian made, trump is a russian plant (buy russian oil), then it all makes perfect sense." and basically accusing all of .ml being Russian bots and/or paid actors because some of us are extremely opposed to voting? There's a difference between having a discussion about the effectiveness of voting in helping to stop the genocide in Palestine, and starting to throw about dehumanizing shit and baseless accusations.

edit: oh yeah, and:

I understand this viewpoint. I think it’s less an opinion and more a neurological condition

yes, because we are all autistic and stupid we can't see that the entire instance is controlled by the russians who put Trump in power, and all of this is evidenced by the actions of the mod of a single community and a few strong words, and by the fact some of our users refuse to participate in bourgeois elections in the imperial core. nice.

18

I really don't know. Deeply unserious person, "ready to debate anyone on this" and the issue is voting? Grow up.

7

Oh it's the account upset people don't like politicians okay with genocide while also saying they know nothing about Israel or Palestine.

And of course world just locked the post the op did there with the similar question. Weird how only the one against free speech didn't lock it 🤔

10
lemmy.ml

Most of the time I am not impacted by the instance rivalries because I largely browse by local instead of all. The only time I was affected by the instance rivalries is when a .world user started reposting all my photography over there, was messaging me about how he felt the admins were evil and he decided it was his purpose in life to bring down the admins and their instance and he was trying to rope me into it. I joined because I wanted access to a reddit-style place that wasn't part of the neoliberal echo chamber that is culture in the imperial core, but I had gotten tired of the bear site.

I like the instance, I like the moderation, I like how its widely federated. I wish it did not have downvotes like hexbear does, but I find the .ml community to be much better in general, though a bit too sectarian at times.

I prefer .ml to hexbear because hexbear has big time "midwestern covid conscious lesbian bar" vibes at times.

My main issue with .ml is how other instances act. It's pretty common to see ridiculous lies about .ml with a bunch of upvotes and the OP is never able to provide any proof when asked for it. But people still believe it because it's .ml
Same with how a lot of users' brains will shut down when they see anything they disagree with posted by someone from this instance. All rationality goes out the window and they retreat to a frustrating ad hominem of "you're using this instance, thus I dont have to take it seriously" - "ml detected, opinion disregarded" it's so sad to see people be so scared.

I also see users from other instances cry about .ml moderation. Personally I feel like it is pretty evenhanded and fair, but moderation will always skew against outsiders. I've been banned from some communities due to incivility while the equally uncivil person I was replying to was not. That's just how it is everywhere, I dont go about pretending like thats some special feature of .world.

So all in all I like it and my issue with it is mainly other instances.

-3

I like the tech focus and how the politics are less impulse-based and seem more rooted in reality and people are more willing to deviate from the crowd. Also like that it doesn't block Hexbear/Lemmygrad, piracy communities, Tor users, etc.

20

It's a cool place where mods don't take bullshit, misinfo and bigotry are removed. They also remove slurs from comments which is good since I don't get that triggered like when I used to browse reddit. People generally treat users like they are people.

19

it's nice you don't need to sign up with an E-mail address

19

To me it was a matter of getting tired of imperialist and bigoted stuff, before that I used one that styles itself as apolitical, naively thinking they'd be at least somewhat better than Reddit. But nope, same reactionary, racist shit.

15

I wanted an actual leftist instance, not Libs pretending they're left while upholding the worst parts of capitalism and imperialism. I wanted viewpoints outside of the colonial center. I feel like I got what I wanted. They're pretty up front about what you'll find inside.

(for those who don't get it: this emoji-combination is miming the children's saying "liar liar pants on fire". sorry if i am ruining it or being too obvious)

6

It was the first instance.

I joined lemmy because I was a big proponent of federated networks. I had had accounts on other federated networks before this one, some of which died out entirely. (I think the first "reddit-like" network I was on was called prismo? Diaspora is more facebook-like and still exists.) I had no clue it was going to get anywhere near as big as it has, and I definitely did not forsee how fucking stupid the instance tribalism would become where new users don't know so just pick one and then seem to be judged for their decision when other members of their community are jackasses in one way or another.

I think overall I'm happy lemmy caught on, but it definitely felt more like a community before the redditors came over. On the other hand, I do think part of the reason it was able to catch on in a way the others weren't was how much it felt like a friendly community here. There was already something with a good culture to migrate to.

14

it's one of the "official" ones being supported by lemmy developers, otherwise i don't really feel the difference. anything is better over the shithole that was reddit.

i guess there's more marxists on .ml, but i don't read the instance the comment is from on purpose; that's irrelevant to me.

10

It's a Lemmy server where you can talk about any brand of cat food that interests you. I love the smell of freedom in the morning.

9

I still don't understand what that means. I don't know what instance/s I use. I don't know how to use a different one. I don't know how to properly search across instances. I barely understand that an instance means something technical with accessing stuff.

honestly that's why i prefer .ml because then i can access the news megathreads on hexbear and grad, but still check in on what the lib narrative is too.

2
lemmy.ml

Why I chose it? I liked the general political leaning.

What could be better? The more nuanced political leanings.... I'm talking about the leftist infighting. I pissed off a ton of people, including myself, the last couple of times I commented on some posts. You say the wrong thing and you don't get polite discourse, you go straight to mudslinging. And yes I'm including myself in that.

It makes me want to interact with the instance less and less.

-2

You getting criticised for being a liberal genocide apologist isn't "leftist infighting"

11

You already know genocide denial is not just denying genocide, but also denying the severity of it - which you do.

2
Alleroreply
lemmy.today

So what I read from it is that .ml folks have a strict set of beliefs one must hold in order not to be crushed under the hateful mob.

If one generally inclines with the set of views, but deviates at any given point, they become a valid target.

This doesn't breed healthy communities and alienates nearly everyone who dares to think for themselves, and yet could be your ally on anything else.

That said, Free Palestine.

-2
lemmy.ml

If that's what you read then there's no point talking to you because you're just ignoring what is actually being written in order to substitute your own bad faith strawman.

3

Lol, by "follow your around" you mean "replied to you once in a thread that was on all".

genocide denial because I told him to vote,

Unfortunately for you, your modlog is public

that’s the kind of disconnect I’m talking about.

Yeah, the disconnect where you lie and other people point it out.

they’ll convince themselves that they’re right.

Unlike you though, you're just built different, right?

2
lemmy.ml

Public means anyone can go read it, including you

2

Wow, .ml moderation at its finest.

The user claimed they just told people to vote, for which the other .ml user answered to look at the modlog.

Then this user asked to point out where exactly in the modlog can anyone read of him doing "genocide denial". That's all, no slurs or inappropriate behavior involved.

Then comments got removed and they got a dose of slurs. Power trippin' mods be power trippin'.

Folks, people avoid .ml not because you're communists. They avoid you because you resemble an angry mob shutting up anyone who remotely misaligns with your views. This thing is unhealthy and I really hope you can do better - after all, .ml is a developer instance, it is the face of Lemmy.

I don't care what folks on Lemmygrad do in their free time, but your instance is special. Make it so people coming would see more to Lemmy than stupid infighting on the grounds of ideological purity and "holier than thou" mentality. And maybe then, over time, you'll gain new allies.

Sincerely, yet another communist.

1
lemmy.ml

"Free Palestine by voting for the people exterminating it"

2

As has been pointed out many times: The majority of palestinian deaths occurred under Biden. You continually ignoring this is part of genocide denial. Somehow less deaths is worse to you.

1

You can say whatever you want, your actions are what matter, and what you did is you denied the genocide carried out by the democrats and your suggestion to stop it, was to vote for democrats who are running on continuing the genocide.
Your arguments never managed to engage with what anyone else wrote and instead you kept repeating the same thing again and again - that thing being a weird strawman that no one was arguing for.

So I dont really see any Marx in you, you are quite obviously dogshit at rhetorics. Plenty of Hitler particles though.

You're putting some lives above others, in this case the lives consciously doing the path of mass murderers.

Not celebrating the death of pawns does not mean I condone what those pawns are doing. I'm not putting their lives above the people they're killing. You're making a lot of assumptions about me if you came to that conclusion.

I'm not celebrating the deaths of working class people who have been coerced/manipulated into carrying out the imperialists' and capitalists' objectives. Am I sad when they get killed? Perhaps a bit. They shouldn't be where they are and doing what they're doing (They probably didn't even think they'd see combat when they enlisted, nor have they considered what role the US military actually plays in the world). Am I enraged when brown people are killed for absurd reasons? Yes, extremely. It's disgusting that is allowed to happen.

So yes, when an American solider dies, it's still a tragedy, and I'm not going to celebrate that (especially when there's some freaks in .world looking for bad .ml behavior to put on display).

Generally I would not, however I would make exceptions for those that enjoyed cruelty.
