Advice for upcycle build

my home server that does everything died many weeks ago so i've been making due with VASTLY inferior backups that literally haven't received updates in over a decade because the manufacturers stop supported them.

i've rebuilt this server many times from old e-waste i had laying around and my last attempt to solicit feedback on the last rebuild yeilded some VERY useful advice so i'm hoping to lightening strikes twice.

my constraints are that i can only use hardware that i have on hand; with the exception of a motherboard since i don't have a functional one this time around, so i plan on buying one used off of craigslist or one of the many local repair shops.

also: deepseek tells me that this hardware are the only things i have on hand that are compatible with each other (and i'm crossing my fingers in the hopes that some of them still work):

  • CPU: socket LGA1200 era Intel Celeron
  • RAM: 64 gigs DDR4 3200 on 2 128 pin sticks
  • CASE: mini itx steel case
  • POWER: ATX standard
  • DRIVES: 4 SATA, 1 PATA, 2 NVME

i also have a wifi3 router/ap and a wifi4 router/ap combo boxes; these are the backups i'm currently using and they are crazy slow.

i need this build to do the same thing its predecessor did which were (ranked in order of importance):

  • router (i used a pfsense virtual machine last time)
  • wifi access point (i last used a wifi nic in AP mode)
  • DNS adblocking (i used pfBlockerNG last time)
  • live kernel patching (used ubuntu last time)
  • vlan segmentation (via pfsense)
  • vpn routing (via pfsense)
  • jbod drives (aka no raid nor HA and permanently mounted on the host)
  • backup capabilities (last used rsync initiated server side to laptops & - gmail)
  • per device firewall rules (for the robot vacuum and security cameras)
  • IDS & IPS (via pfsense)
  • home cloud storage (last used pfsense + nfs + sshfs + ddns)
  • multimedia system (last used kodi + old plasma tv)

Mamdani: Venezuela & Cuba are Dictatorships

take it with a grain of salt; ramos [the guy in the pic next to his daughter] is a US imperialist to the core.

The initial answer was mild, condemning the repression in both countries but declining to call them "dictators." However, his campaign sent a much more contundent position days after the interview:

" I want to be clear on where I stand. I believe both Nicolas Maduro and Miguel Diaz-Canel are dictators. Their administrations have stifled free and fair elections, jailed political opponents, and suppressed the free and fair press. And yet, our federal government's long history of punitive policies toward both countries, including extrajudicial killings of Venezuelans and the continuation of a decades long blockade of Cuba, have only worsened these conditions. Democratic socialism is about dignity, justice and accountability. And above all, it's about building a democracy that works for working people, not one that preys on them."

Future Proofing Server

my home server needs to be reconstructed and i'm seeking ideas on how to future proof it. here's some ascii art in a screenshot to help describe how it's currently setup:

description (left to right):

  • laptops, smartphones, tables, etc connect to an access point configured on a windows 10 virtual machine (vm). the windows10 vm uses pci passthrough on the wireless adapter and this is done to get gigabit wifi speeds since intel's drivers won't allow linux to do this in ap mode; but will allow it just fine if you're using windows.
  • requests from the wifi clients are passed via dns & ip masquerade to another virtual machine based on pfsense
  • pfsense serves as the router, firewall, vpn, ad blocking & web hosting and it's also configured to use pci passthrough on the primary network interface to gap internet traffic from the server
  • the center of the drawing shows how i perform data backups using a 3 gig wired connection with a hardware switch and i setup the host ubuntu server to manage dhcp on the secondary network interface & the devices that are connect to the switch. the data is stored using rsync and harddrives are setup to use an extremely large lvm made of several different types of hard drives.

i've rebuilt this server multiple times each time i encountered a "gotcha" or a surprise that i had not anticipated and it made some needful component stop working; so i'm seeking advice from Lemmy on how to redesign this to mitigate future surprises.

some of the surprises i've encountered so far are:

  • the pfsense logs overfilled the root volume of the bsd based vm because logrotate was configured for linux. the image is hardcoded with a single volume so i will need to find a way to borrow some space from the backup volume using nfs and configure the logs to write there instead of locally.
  • i have no key for the windows10 vm; so i'm forced to clone it's qcow image and manually configure the hotspot each time the 30 day free trial from microsoft expires. I intend to improve upon this creating an ansible job to rotate this virtual machine every 30 days automatically and include powershell based tasks to configure the hotspot in windows automatically
  • intel limits the speed for linux native internet connection sharing to 100 megabits (already mentioned & fixed above)
  • the local users home volume overfills when trying to take my google backups (already fixed)
  • my cats & dogs LOVE the taste of cat6 capables and cat6 is required for 3 gigabit speeds (also fixed)

constraints:

  • don't spend anymore $$$
  • gigabit wifi speed is A MUST
  • 3 gigabit backups speeds are a must too

luigi felt like he was poor

FASCINATING AF perspective suggesting that luigi is a member of the class that benefits from our system, but rejected it out of ignorance because he (and most younger people like him of that class) identify with the systematically violated poor due to luigi (and others like him) mostly not consuming the mainstream, legacy media that re-enforces the system.

due to this, the real danger for the ruling class is not he 99%; but rather their younger generations who are siding with the violated poor out of ignorance that they will inherit the reigns of this system because the ruling class has focused so much on sending the message that the system is invincible to the poor, that they unwittingly have given their own younger generation the same message thanks to the internet & social media.

each time the ruling class responds with zealously overwhelming force to protect the system and shore up that sense of invincibility; it becomes more self-defeating since it prods their younger generations to rail against the system even further until luigi; as a member of that predatory ruling class; used his class' privileged perspective to take the kind direct action that's not available to the poor.

if true, i think this explains why all of the super powers have been working so hard to curtail internet access and social media presences that don't tow the official narratives like tiktok and maybe explains why so many of the ruling classes' young, like hasan piker, have such strongly leftists views despite their immensely wealthy background.

House of Representatives Votes 269-144 to Ban State Department from Citing Gaza Death Toll

Rep. Rashida Tlaib: “But Palestinians are not just numbers. Behind these numbers are real people — mothers, fathers, sons, daughters — who have had their lives stolen from them and their families torn apart. And we should not be trying to hide it. These are innocent children and babies who have been bombed in their tents, burned alive, dismembered and deliberately starved to death. Where is our shared humanity in this chamber? There is so much anti-Palestinian racism in this chamber that my colleagues don’t even want to acknowledge that Palestinians exist at all, not when they’re alive and now not even when they’re dead. It’s absolutely disgusting. This is genocide denial.”
