I do it all the time. Before smart phones were a thing I had a water proof shower radio. Now I use the phone for the same thing. Mostly listening to news or a podcast or something. Sometime it's a Nebula video, but in the shower I'd just be listening to it like a podcast anyway. Before phones were waterproof I used to use a waterproof Bluetooth speaker.

I've never had steam cause a problem, but then again my showers aren't long, aren't very hot and my phone is kept pretty high up and out of the way.

Everyone uses their phones while eating or pooping. Those activities don't take long either. I choose to listen to something while showering.

It's ok if you don't understand it or do it yourself, but some people take their phone into the shower. It is a thing.

"Everyone" does not use their phone while eating or pooping. I make an effort to engage with mine as little as possible, in a perfect world checking it when I wake up when I get home and before bed. For me the phone is a weird mix of useful tool and addictive drug, almost impossible to drop entirely but very much worth limiting access to. Constant stimulation is certainly a choice you can make, but probably not a healthy one. I view what you're doing the same way you might view someone saying they always drink a beer in the shower.

They're literally equating listening to a podcast from your phone in the shower with doing drugs/drinking beer.

Those activities don't take long

That's a strange assumption here

5

Pooping takes forever 🥺 and please don't say fiber. There's no room left for more 💀

You can get a waterproof Bluetooth speaker pretty cheap. Better sound and zero risk of anything happening to the phone. I love mine.

Like a few other commenters, I had never even thought that taking your phone into the shower was a thing until I saw this post.

Just... why? Why risk it? Your average smart phone is anywhere from $500 to over $1000, so what's so important that you're deliberately exposing it to water and the risk of dropping it (especially if you're using shampoo, conditioner, soap or any other bathroom product designed to act as a cleaning agent)? Surely whatever it is can wait however long it is you're showering for?

Personally, I wouldn't want a friend/relative/whatever phoning me or answering the phone if they were in the shower or using the bathroom.

I can understand one of the other comments about using it to listen to podcasts/music/videos/etc., and at least in that case the phone is presumably far enough away (and not being regularly accessed) that it's at lower risk. Fair enough -- I sometimes do that whilst washing dishes. Still, I think I'd struggle trying to listen to something whilst actively showering -- too much other noise.

Put a bluetooth speaker in the shower instead of your phone; it's not like you can work the screen with wet hands anyway.

SInce my speaker stopped working, I've taken to putting the phone in a plastic baggie hanging from the curtain rod between the curtains.

17

How dense is your shower curtain than you can't leave it outside the shower and still hear it??

3
sh.itjust.works

The speaker on my Pixel 7 is plenty loud, but so is the water in the shower.

I also listen to podcasts, which are usually mixed quieter than music, and require more volume to pick up quieter consonants.

15

Get a little Bluetooth speaker. I keep my phone next to the speaker outside the shower, and I hear it fine.

2

You think hacking an Amazon Show with Lineage is less work than "messing around with Bluetooth"? You'll fit right in here.

3

Haha. I mean it takes like 15 min and then never had to mess with it again.

1

Not the person you replied to but I can hear it just fine....but I would rather not hear music at all than to hear it muffled through a shower curtain and a waterfall.

Speaker's gotta be IN the shower or I'm singing my own songs

2

my phone is here for a good time, not a long time

Seriously, if it survives being attached to me for 2-3 years, a little occasional steam damage is not going to be its biggest concern

12

The shower is the one place where I can have some peace and switch off. No news, no noise, no immediate crises that need solving. Just listen to the running water, enjoy for a bit, feel a little bit more relaxed and clean afterwards. A phone would achieve the exact opposite.

In case you don't actually know anybody under the age of about 35, the next time you are riding a bus or are a passenger in a car, start watching other drivers and see how many of them literally cannot put their phones down. Like even if they aren't actually looking at them while they drive, which is like a solid 30% of all drivers, another significant chunk is holding the phone even when not in use. The shower is not even a high bar at this point.

12

Laughs in South Australia.

$592 + Victims of Crime levy = $700 fine if you're caught using your phone while driving or stopped at a intersection (inc. red light)

You're only allowed to use a phone mounted in a cradle for Audio calls and GPS navigation. (Uber, etc is a grey area)

Don't use your phone while driving. Just don't do it.

2

Wouldn't advise them to do that if they rent a car in Norway. The fine is about $1100 if they're caught, plus three points on the license.

We have fines and demerit points where I live, but they don't seem to be enforced often. Our cops are too busy...uh, I don't actually even know, but we sure pay them a lot (as an organization). Traffic enforcement seems to have gone down quite significantly in the past few years.

I've been doing this for around 10 years, have very hot, steamy showers and never had a problem 🤷

Started with the Samsung Galaxy S7, one of the earlier water resistant phones, and I've been doing it ever since, across maybe 5 phones, almost every day. You'll be fine. If you are worried about drops, just use a decent case.

As for why, others have said, it's to keep listening to my YouTube video essays and similar. Stuff that doesn't need to be seen to be appreciated.

46
aeioureply

10 years, 5 phones

So you only keep your phones 2 years, it's possible you simply don't have them long enough to accumulate a noticible amount of steam damage.

19
Armand1reply
lemmy.world

It has varied. I used to keep them 1-2 years when they used to improve a lot year-to-year. The last 2 phones I've had 3 years each.

After I'm done with it, I hand my phone over to my brother, who runs it into the ground over the course of the next 3 or so years, until it's almost unusably slow. My brother does the shower thing too, but less often. Maybe 30% of the time and less steamy.

It's possible that there could be gradual, over time damage. Rust growing until it forms a short. But that's not been my experience.

Ultimately, it's up to you if you want to take the risk, but given how I treated mine, if you even did this half as often as I did, you're probably fine.

I didn't mention this above, but I sometimes also used the phone inside the shower. Clicking the next video or checking a message notification. Maybe 1 in 8 days.

I've also sometimes washed the crud off the phone under the sink, rather than my normal approach with isopropyl alcohol. The worst I'd get is a notification saying I couldn't charge for a bit, or the speaker sounding funny for half an hour or so.

You might call me crazy, but I don't like to baby my stuff. I paid for water resistance, I'm going to make use of it.

4

I am the same way, and I didn’t know it would upset so many people lol. And it’s not a phone addiction thing either, I’m just having a comfy relaxing time in the shower and that may include having some entertainment.

I have a marsboy, and it is on the sink, not in the shower. But then again, I also leave the door open and the exhaust on, so the mirror doesn't fog. But I honestly wouldn't take anything with a screen in there.

However, I did have a airpod fall out of my left ear and it dropped in the toilet. Due to its "sleek design" it took me a good five minutes to retrieve it. Kept it separated from activation and tried it out over a few hours. Surprisingly, it still works.

But it does remind me of a coworker who had an iPod Touch and bragged that he had found the perfect pocket: his breast pocket. That same day, he destroyed in when it fell in the toilet.

I cheered him up by sending him the IT Crowd episode where Moss did the same thing with his cell phone.

3

Lmao, I love the IT crowd

That’s a good point about leaving the door open, I leave it closed and steam my shit up (I do have the exhaust on tho, I’m not a maniac)

Because said waterproofing was for accidental, rare incidents of exposure, such that you have enough time to yank it somewhere safe before water penetrated.

Waterproofing was never meant for intentional, repeated, or extended exposure to extreme environments. That’s what waterproof cases are for. You know, the kind that allow your phone to go intentionally into water.

I listen to The Daily podcast or audiobooks. The phone goes into a little 3D printed holder to keep it dry and redirect the sound. I’ve done this for years with multiple phones, never any issues.

Even though modern iPhones are “waterproof” I like to keep it as dry as possible. The touchscreen stops working reliably if it gets wet, and the speakers can get blocked by water droplets and reduces the volume.

It’s also worth noting that living in the PNW requires using the bathroom fan to keep the moisture down. The bathroom never gets that steamy, which I’m sure drastically changes the moisture exposure equation.

11
rekabisreply
lemmy.ca

In the bathroom in general, I can understand. Even without a fan, the steam rarely reaches countertop height, so putting it on the countertop or the lid of the toilet or something else low still makes sense if you are in the shower.

My issue lies in having it IN the shower, and having it taking the moisture straight in the teeth. Like… why?? It’s not like it is impossible to hear from next to the shower, well out of the way of said moisture.

4

Why? Mostly, so I can control it if an episode ends but also for max volume over the shower sounds. When I travel and don’t have a good place for it, I will use a nearby toilet or counter.

Some hair dyes can have you standing there for 10 or 20 minutes.

Sometimes just enjoying the steam is nice. It's taking a lot of Blood Sweat and Tears to build a modern world, we are fortunate to have hot safe water on top. People with normal dopamine levels just can't relate, so I get a lot of flack and am often called lazy. Which is annoying as hell because I genuinely want to be a functioning adult, but my stubborn brain just refuses to let me accomplish anything without external stimulation. It's torture being labeled something you're not, just because someone can't understand what it's like when your brain won't make the reward chemicals on its own. But it is what it is.

Also BTW I've been doing this for a decade and only once has a phone actually died on me from water damage. So I don't worry about it. I'm clumsy so I always have an insurance plan for my phones regardless...

Stimulants like Adderall, PEA, Octodrine, and Propylhexedrine are a half decent band-aid, but they raise my blood pressure and make me feel "tweaky" so I don't want to take them every day. They feel like they're slowly killing me. I mean imagine taking meth every single day. That's what it feels like for me. Unfortunately since tolerance builds rapidly, I have to take massive doses for it to continue working, further compounding the problem.

So I try not to take stims more than a few times a month, because even once a week is too much for me. It sucks ass that there's no long-term solution for ADHD. Just temporary fixes that rapidly stop working.

I do agree that yeah; stimulants are bad especially if you are like me. Who is prone to bouts of insanity because on stims you really can’t really control your own thoughts anymore. It’s a terrifying experience and honestly it’s not that that uncommon to have ADD or ADHD and be a bit psychotic. Especially worse with the OCD that I used to have with it. But you know at least I had a super friendly dog and grandparents to take care of me and a Nintendo Switch. I got over it eventually but I never wanna go through that experience ever again. Though I do appreciate having the ability to sleep for an entire year essentially through a winter. Being in a dark room also helped a lot. It kinda feels like a fever dream when I remember it now though. I should probably go back on anti psychotics after my most recent break with stimulants. Shame I don’t have money or health insurance.

Can we just take a moment to say, it is insane to me that the general public would prescribe drugs onto a neurospicy person just so that they felt normal about their predisposition and judgmental about everyone else's in how they use their assistive technology?

2

I like to do some business calls under the shower.

3

Why people so judgmental. I'm sure y'all do shit others find more weird than having your phone in the shower.

24

I floss and brush in the shower. I just get so impatient standing at the sink for so long. Shower is relaxing, though, so I do a much better job in there.

6

I thought they meant in the bathroom while you shower but people have their phone IN the shower!?

20

Add me to the list of people who just learned that anybody takes their phone into the shower regularly.

From reading the comments though, it seems to be a mix of phone/stimulation-addicted people and people who aren't. But I'm skeptical of those who claim they aren't.

20

I used to have a perfectly working system with a waterproof bag-thing for the phone and a bluetooth speaker somewhere outside of the shower so I could watch youtube videos while just chilling in the shower.

Also had one of those long 1920s cigarette holders so I could smoke a joint in there. I made a good time out of it.

I wish I had your brain. I feel like unless I have a constant stream of information coming into my brain, I might go insane.

It’s awful, and unhealthy, and I’m trying to figure out how to escape this paranoid insanity, but it’s what I’ve got until I can figure out the fix. Reminds me, need to schedule my next therapist appointment.

13

Exercise:

  • Set a timer for 1 minute.

  • Sit down and do nothing.

Do that every day. After a while, you'll adjust and it wont be painful. Then do 2 minutes. Then do 5. Then do 15. Every day.

Here's what happened:

You've lived your entire life in a bowl of cocaine. You were born into it. When your parents wanted a break, they gave you some coke. When you were good, they gave you some coke. After you completed your homework, you were allowed a little coke. When you grew up, if you feel tired, or feel like you don't want to do something, you can have a little nose candy to recharge.

If you want to stop using so much cocaine, you can't just go cold turkey. You need to start by being able to survive one minute at a time without it.

It's easy to just remove the bowl of cocaine and not use cocaine. But that's not going to help you practice choosing not to do cocaine when it is available.

The only way to get better is to stop consuming content! Choose a weekend, tell your friends you will be out of touch, and turn off your phone for a couple of days (if you can't do that, just shut off WIFI and data so you can still text/call). It really won't be as bad as you think, and you might even like it - but you will have to do stuff to occupy your hands. Cook, walk, read easy books, exercise, etc.

Belive me, I’ve tried. I’m an asssitant scoutmaster for my kids troop, and we camp about monthly in the summer. So, I’ve got lots of phone free weekends behind me. I’m also got kids in sports too, so go to games and meets.

I’m taking steps but I still have work to do.

4

Don't take big steps. Take small ones.

In the running world, there's this thing called "Couch-to-5k". Its a progran that can literally take you from square one - the couch - to a non-stop 5k run. Its all about small gains and slow incremental progress.

A few small conscious efforts to disconnect from your phone every day, even for 15 mins at a time, will slowly add up to bigger and bigger gains over time. If you can break the impulse to check your phone by disrupting the immediate availability of your phone, you might be able to get the ball rolling pretty quickly.

4

unless I have a constant stream of information coming into my brain, I might go insane

I felt the same way. It's an upbringing thing, and I'm not sure it was due to being raised poor by parents always jobbing -- dad was employed for 5 different jobs at one point. I gotta be working.

My wife was raised by parents with job security and lived in one house her entire childhood. Parents were home at 4 and then 5, and knew (and taught) healthy disagreement over contentious issues. Her whole family is a breath of fresh air vs the raccoons my family must resemble.

She took me on a vacation, like the first one I ever had. It was to the Dominican, just some resort (occidental in punta cana). I asked what our plans were while we were there, because I gotta have that calendar full.

"Nothing," she said.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing."

And we did, largely, nothing. 10 days, beach chairs and impeccable waiters at beck and call. We saw the whales and did a snorkel, and we went to the Amelia supermarket for snacks...

But really we sat and watched the ocean. We talked like spouses should, holding hands and breathing easily. There was no work, no issues, no jobs; and, above all the cost of going and staying, the big thing a trip like that did was to get us away from the churn and swirl and rumbling gnawing stress of western life.

You may not realize it, but you need some downtime: real downtime.

Don't go anywhere fancy, but turn the phone over and just be for a sec. Be you, be present, be interactive, be observant; and just breathe.

I found it life-changing. We don't go to fancy places very often, but we do reserve some time to be ourselves like that, and it's a very good thing.

Maybe it'll help for you too? Either way, I hope you find that balance and sanctuary too, so you can exist for just a calming moment without the fear of missing out on the trivia-stream.

1

There is two people in this thread

  1. people who read "bringing your phone in the shower" as having the phone in the same room as the shower.

  2. everyone else who seems to think that people are putting their phones directly under the shower nozzle.

17

But how else am I going to use the app for my shower's water temperature and pressure and massage pattern and RGB lighting?

8

Fucking Christ, so phone fiends can't even take 2-5 minutes to wash themselves with out getting their stimulation?

Civilization can't survive this.

Sad, that the recommendation is "use Bluetooth speakers instead, which are more expendable" instead of "are safe to use".

12

I used to have a waterproof Bluetooth speaker, but it was actually better than having your phone with you since it was right there in the shower.

2

UE BOOM speakers are safe to use in a humid bathroom during a shower. I'm pretty sure.

They sound fucking fantastic too.

1

Who is doing this? Especially when there are waterproof Bluetooth speakers for under $50. Far lower risk there.

12

I don't mind taking a break from my phone in the shower. It never would have occurred to me to have it in there.

12

Have the same phone for 6 years now, bring it into the shower most days, and have not had any issues.

Maybe steam has a non-zero effect but it's pretty damn close to zero..

This thread is a great reminder that Lemmy users do not represent the general public. I put a phone mount in the shower so I don't have to pause a podcast or whatever to take a shower, it's nice. I don't really love showers and struggle to stop what I'm doing to change direction, so it's one less barrier to entry. My partner and some friends who have used my shower have also appreciated it.

9

That's me. Hell, you wouldn't believe this, but I'm on Lemmy on my phone as I type this.

Why not just use a bluetooth speaker, and leave the phone outside the bathroom? That way, if it breaks, then it's not as expensive to replace as a phone, and the audio quality is generally better than what a phone's speakers can put out.

Phones are like cigarettes but you need to smoke them to verify your payment or login to your bank.

1

Not in that sense, man. I'm trying to say that humans have developed an independence from cell phones. Many simple things, like going for a walk or other things, all depend on cell phones, thus creating addictions to screens and making them stronger. I'm not saying you're going to smoke your cell phone like it's a cigarette. I'm just arguing that screen addiction, whether for a short or long time, can damage your brain, making many simple things in your daily life difficult to do without a cell phone.

0

put it in a plastic bag or two and ready you are to keep being consumed by content.

6

Interesting. I got a cheap Xiaomi smartwatch a few months ago and the manual straight up says that the water resistance is good enough for basic swimming but don't bring it into a sauna or hot shower for this exact reason. (I avoid submerging it in general because I bought it secondhand and if it was refurbished that can mess up the waterproofing.)

6

I have been wearing my Huawei smartwatch everywhere for years. Shower, jacuzzi, surfing, etc. No problems so far.

3

My mi band 3 survived more than one Ocean swim. Gave it to my mum, still works. The pixel watch i replaced it with is dead, without any swimming.

2

I never knew there were this many people who bring phones in the shower. Where is this world going.... People chase dopamine even while showering

5

Y'all need to also stop taking it to take a shit. I deal with my intrusive thoughts just like you but c'mon now. Just stop the addiction at least when in the oval office. Even more so while IN PUBLIC RESTROOMS. Just stop. You're already taking the nature call. Other callers can wait.

5

TBH I dont bring my phone to the bathroom anymore cause i dont want to risk my phone breaking, even if it is waterproof.

4

Why don't these shower-phone people just get a much cheaper and more durable waterproof speaker? I get wanting music or a podcast or whatever but I can't imagine how I would watch a video with all the soap and water everywhere

4

I've had this same phone since Covid, and bring it into the shower every day for podcasts, music, or YouTube videos.

Still works great! It might need charge in the evening after heavy use, but what 6 year old phone wouldn't?

4

Personally I need the danger to feel alive.

Also, you should look into buying second hand phones, $1000 is crazy.

3

I paid like $230 two years ago for this Pixel 8 I'm typing on. And that's paying extra for an unlocked one.

1

I’ll keep that in mind in case I ever shower inside a boiler.

4

i use mine when i take a shower to play music that i can use to time how long it takes. i do not have it in the shower stall with me just hooked up to a bluetooth speaker on a shelf above the toilet next to the stall. the phone itself is laid on the lavatory counter about a meter from the shower and covered by the clothes i removed prior to getting wet so it doesnt get any water at all on it

4

I don't even keep my phone in my pocket when exercising because of the humidity from sweating. If I'm hiking it either goes in my pack or in a ziplock to protect it.

3

I haven't found that to be a problem if I put it screen side in. Except for the sweat on the screen. I've had sweat on the camera side get into the camera. I like to have it convenient to snap a picture quickly, like if there's some wildlife.

Waterproof ≠ Heatproof, and it also doesn't guarantee chemicals and other impurities won't wreck your phone. I took my old phone into the ocean a few times because we didn't have lockers on the beach and no rental car to leave stuff in. It was rated waterproof and it survived, but it didn't want to charge for quite a while and getting the salt and sand out of the usb-c port was tedious.

My fitness watch is as happy in the pool swimming laps as it is anywhere else. I do take it off in the shower though because I don't want to clean soap scum off it or have water trapped between the watch and my wrist. It sounds like I may be inadvertently saving the battery!

2

Waterproof ≠ Heatproof

Also Waterproof ≠ Waterproof. Found that out the hard way with my pixel, I was taking some pictures by the pool, it went in the water, broken and no warranty for liquid damage.

2

Forgetting I had my phone in my pocket, I got in to a 105 F hot tub. I immediately realized and got it out of water. It was already glitching out and dying. That IPX rating does not respect heat!

2
sh.itjust.works

I have taken my phones into showers since before waterproof phones were a thing and I never had an issue. I change mine every couple of years so maybe I haven’t used them long enough to notice any issues.

2

I take mine into the shower occasionally. Generally just to finish a reply or finish reading something. My phone is 4 years old and is 100% fine.

2

My phone was $800, I think. Of COURSE I'm not taking it in to the shower!! 😧 I don’t even take it into the bathroom.

2

If one is this ignorant and addicted to the damn thing, plug it while you take a shower. The phone will be happy.

1
belgae.social

Is this the same for baths?

Although water temperature for my bath is hotter than for my showers, it seems to me less steam comes off a bath.

1

I guess the water in the shower is aerosolized by the high speed impact so perhaps baths are better. I don't imagine the water temperature makes much of a difference since its presumably not 100°c

the first one - the LG Prada - released in 2007.

Wait what? Has Apple successfully stolen LG's valor? I could have sworn it was the iPhone in 2007.

I'm actually kind of shocked that I wasn't aware of this phone.

Edit: you know, I've never been a huge fan of Apple or Steve Jobs, and I know he pretty much stole every idea they ever had... But for some reason I always gave them credit with the iPhone.

Apparently he stole that too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_Prada

The LG Prada was announced shortly before Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPhone on 9 January 2007.[10][11][12] After the release of the iPhone the head of the LG Mobile Handset R&D Center was quoted saying he believed Apple had stolen the idea from the Prada after it was announced as part of the iF Design Award, where it won a prize in March 2007.[13][14]

1

The rumor is that the whole iPhone concept was actually the idea of one unnamed engineer at apple who worked on it in his spare time; apparently he had the idea at the same time as the folks at IG, probably it was kind of a natural evolution of the earlier devices. (You have to consider that the thing that made the iPhone such a success, the "app store", was not available from the beginning. The first devices had no official way of adding any software, but people quickly found hacks and added a debian-like package management to it. From there the first custom applications spawned and only then Apple understood the potential of opening the platform to third-party developers.)

Regarding the engineer, apparently he was fired by his supervisor for spending time on this "stupid" idea; but back in the day, Apple had the policy that everyone who was fired had to report to Jobs one last time, and then he showed him what he was working on and Jobs took it from there.

1

True, what I should have said was I’ve had a phone since 2014, but is garbled sentence now.

Who's taking showers so hot that steam comes off? A quick web search says showers should be colder than 40°, maybe up to 42.5°. Phones start thermal throttling when battery temp reaches 45°. So shower water is hotter than the recommended operating temperature of 0 °C to 35 °C, but not hotter than what the phone itself can get.

The manual says sudden changes in temperature such as the sauna may damage the water resistance.

May doesn't mean will. Mind you that the manual also says installing unofficial apps voids your warranty. I wouldn't be worried unless someone actually tests this and finds that it does cause harm.

Edit: Did I say something wrong? I don't understand the downvotes

-3
lemmy.world

I take showers that are predominantly 95-100% hot water.

I have very oily skin and the hot water actually clears my pores and I have less breakouts this way.

so yeah...people do take showers where steam comes off. in fact, in the winter even after I dry off, my body steam will rise from my skin for a solid 5 minutes afterwards.

the real problem here is people taking their phones in the shower with them. gross. the thing covered in fecal matter, and all sorts of other germs/microbes? and then you let other people touch it? I bet your phone is likely dirtier than your toilet seat or your outdoor shoes, and you take it in the shower with you, to what, "shower" with it??

put it down. leave it on do not disturb. and enjoy a shower disconnected from the world.

2

the real problem here is people taking their phones in the shower with them. gross. the thing covered in fecal matter, and all sorts of other germs/microbes?

Wait... why's it a problem? You're actually convincing me that taking it into the shower is a good thing because people can clean it off! Lol

3

I go to my ~10° downstairs shower and it takes like a minute for steam to appear. If I took my phone there regularly, it might have an effect.

1

Not really. As the water sprays and splashes it forms some mist like effect, perhaps that's being mistaken for steam here?

Steam (i.e. the gas form of water) comes from boiling water and is mostly invisible, the clouds of vapour you see in the shower aren't "steam". I know people say that anyway, it's not the worst thing ever, but some people might be interested to learn there's a difference.

Temperature is an average. On average the water molecules won't be at boiling temp, but occasionally some of them will be and they will evaporate, and the hotter the water is, the closer that average is to the boiling point, the more it'll happen. Earth's entire water cycle hinges on the fact that water doesn't need to be boiling to evaporate.

2
jdrreply

You're totally right, I don't think we're disagreeing. Water evaporates at room temperature (and pressure) but it's not the same thing as steam. Water vapour is a mixture of tiny liquid droplets with air, steam (in the sense I'm using the word) is a gas form of water and only forms above 100°C (at standard pressure, a few degrees lower if you're e.g. up a mountain).
