If it gets too cold I can bundle up. If it gets too hot theres only so many clothes I can take off before that bitch Brenda goes to H.R.

See, my problem is that being too hot is just uncomfortable to me but being too cold is physically painful no matter how many layers I put on.

24

You need better layers then. If it’s your face that’s a problem get a good scarf and angle it so your breath blows back up over your nose and cheeks.

I’ve been out and comfortable in -30°C/-20°F, but much below that and it get tricky without goggles, and boot and glove warmers.

Air conditioning is uncommon in homes in Northern Europe.

Not only is it uncommon, our buildings are generally not set up for convenient installation of AC - window units are not compatible with our window types - nor have we put any effort into optimizing for keeping our homes cool, since the primary challenge we face is keeping our homes sufficiently hot for the vast majority of the year.

Retrofitting all homes to cope with our new climate reality is going to be an immensely expensive endeavour.

23
lemmy.zip

Also, mold. Our houses insulation often has trouble with active cooling.

5

That could be a problem with your a/c configuration, or you just need dehumidifiers too. If you're in a very humid climate, dehumidifiers can help air conditioners work better too.

1

Swede here, in my 38 years, I have only been in one home here with AC.

This summer me and my dad travelled down to the south of Germany to fly an airship, and to visit Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, it was over 35C just about every day and only one hotel we stayed in had AC.

Europe does not have AC at home for the most part.

Offices is another thing completely though.

I can put on 3 layers of clothes but i cannot take off my skin to get cooler

It's also easier to add heat in a room than to remove it in my exp

This is only how a cold weather person thinks about heat. That's not how real life works.

One light layer of linen is amazing. Your body does the work on its own. Touregs in the Sahara wear a light layer of light fabric. Look at Saudis and the traditional outfit. Italy in the summer. All similar. All perfectly comfortable.

Italy in the summer

Sir i am Italian

::: spoiler Spoiler We also don't have anything similiar to what u mentioned :::

6
hansoloreply
lemmy.today

Every time I've been to Italy in the summer, north or south, everyone is in summer uniform. Same in Greece, but obviously the Italian version was fancier.

Unless... Are you an 80 year old man wearing polyester and wool and a vest and a hat in August on the farm?

Seriously, though, any search online for summer Italian wear is usual light clothing.

Tell me you have been only in turistic areas where everyone tries to strut and show off to turists without telling me you have been only in turistic areas:

Sorry but that's just a bad rappresentation of how yhe avarage people uses clothes in summer here, if you may, i think i know more how people dress here since...well i live here

1
hansoloreply
lemmy.today

A mix of both, really. Had to spend a week in some random part of Milan for a conference at a university some the space was free.

For real, tough, even Eastern Europe dresses in light summer clothing during the summer. You can't be telling me that people in Tirana or Sofia do this and Italians don't?

And sure, we're both just one data point of information. But so what would you say is the most common summer wear if not light clothes?

1
Axolotlreply

T-shirt and shorts usually, many also rock a tank top and usually in cities with beaches you will find shirtless people

1

Sitting on a patio drinking beers, or swimming comfortably in a lake when camping

10

Seeing the sun, not having the air be so cold that any exposed skin hurts, air that isn't so dry I feel like I'm suffocating, grocery runs not feeling like a trek through the Antarctic

7

No flu, no sickness (maybe once), no runny nose, no stiff joints, wanting to actually do stuff, having more productive time to do stuff, being able to go into nature and hang out all the time.

Winters are absolutely depressing and miserable.

5

Camping, swimming, boating, fishing, sunshine, green plants, gardens, dry feet, not having to bundle up.

3

Sunshine on my face and skin. This contributes MASSIVELY to my mental health. Where I live winter is a constant claustrophobic grey.

2
lemmy.world

It's not one thing, it's multiple things together.

Cold is okay alone, but add wind and/or rain and cold sucks.

Heat is okay without humidity, and as long as it still gets cool at night for a break. Heat with wind and/or rain is okay, but heat with wind and dust sucks. Dust always sucks.

I can always wear more.
I can never wear less than my skin and be miserable.

11

I do agree with that and prefer cold over hot. But when it gets down around there it's just fucking miserable. Any exposed skin just starts to hurt so quick

3

I have and I'll take it, please give me some of your cold weather. There's only so much you can do when it becomes 110 outside. The AC is on permanently to keep it at 85.

5
sh.itjust.works

Well yeah, having to stay outside in any temperature outside of comfortable for extended periods can be a problem. I wouldn't want to be sleeping outside in record breaking heatwaves either.

1
lemmy.world

Two words. Seasonal depression. You don't get that in the summer.

17
NotSteve_reply
lemmy.ca

The sunlight makes up for it. Having like 6 hours of real sunlight fucking sucks. I also hate having to put on like six layers to take out the garbage without having the air hurt my skin

2
robearreply
lemmy.zip

Sunlight isn't worth much when it's too hot to leave the house without fear of heatstroke.

4

The alternative is it being too cold to leave without fear of frostbite.

Also unless you're wearing a full Arctic exploration suit then the air is gunna hurt when it's -35c (with windchill) which fucking sucks for doing small errands. I'd rather just be a little hot and not need to put on a whole 10 layers to bring out the garbage or recycling

edit: I'd also rather die of heatstroke enjoying my 12 hours of sunlight than die frozen in the 3:30pm darkness

1

I live where it gets over 100f in the summer, never really feared heatstroke. Drink water.

1

You don't get that in the summer.

I get it only in summer

10

I am thoroughly depressed all summer. The first cooler, shorter day I’m like a happy new person. I’m a redhead and can easily get sick being in the sun. Fuck summer, bring on the cooler, shorter, stormier days and I’m all in for snowball fights, sledding, soups, sweaters, cozy fires, and a good scotch.

Come live in the hellscape of Texas. You cannot go outside from late may until mid October. It was 103F+ from mid July until 3 days ago. I paid almost $700 for my electric bill last month. The house is stale and hasn't had fresh air in months. I have a huge list of projects that I very much want to make progress on, but ten minutes outside takes me multiple hours to recover from. The temperature in the parking lot in front of the grocery store was above 120F a few days ago.

Seasonal depression occurs in the cursed summer here. As soon as my family members pass on, I will never return to this god forsaken, scorched wasteland.

Well then I invite You to Poland, where besides 3 months of summer everything is gray, cold and damp. The grass is always greener I guess.

2

So true. If only we could do some "clever corporate accounting" (aka thermodynamic tax fraud) with the temps between us.

1
lemmy.world

Autumn and spring are better than both. Both of the extremes are getting less fun every year.

I don't like it when it's so hot I want to take off my skin

I also don't like it when it's so cold I have to somehow instantly magic another 4 layers on/off me when walking through a door to not freeze/sweat to death.

Give me comfortable 2 layer weather where I can wear the same thing indoors and outdoors and feel fine

13
VeganBtwreply
piefed.social

Yes, and if there was a way to magically make seasonal allergies go away for good, I'd get a couple more months of comfort every year.

4

We're about to find out nature's wrath with new and fun weather in every season.

12
lemmy.world

That's because everything is dead and brown. I'll take the yard work in the heat for the green.

3

We've had those temps, and sweating all day with AC unit running sucks. I'd much rather put on a sweater if I feel chilly in the Winter.

When its 0°K and some mf says winter is better than summer.

11

Technically people should hate me most cause i offend everyone. I like very continental climates so both hot summers and cold winters, i just like seeing the seasons and the smell in the air change, having a dip in a cold lake or sea during summer, having the perfect weather for outdoor activites during fall, being able to ski, build snowmen, chill inside during winter, etc. I know i have bias cause i was born somewhere where the climate is like this but i just love it. Everyone has their preferences.

7

You can put on more clothes to mitigate a cold winter, but can you put off more clothes in summer when you are already bare naked? No... Winter wins!

7

Mild winter? Nooooo!!! The last one for me in the 60s and I barely got a winter at all last time :(

4

I am still on summer side. But if one happens to want to die and chooses between heat and cold, then cold is the better option

I wish USA would go metric so I could instinctively understand what 45⁰C is without consulting a conversion calculator. I'm guessing 45⁰C is 90-100F? BRB lemme verify ... Oh jeez it's 113⁰F! 🔥

What I did, was I just switched my phone's weather app to Celsius and spent a year walking outside to work. It rewires your sense of temperature.

7

That sounds like a great idea! Then I remembered the reality of how I use my weather app. I use it when I'm too lazy to go outside to check the temperature IRL 😂

4
Dozzi92reply
lemmy.world

Yeah, F is just more accurate. I know you can use decimals, but I never see anyone post C temps as 20.2. It's 20 or it's 21, which is anywhere from 68-69.8F, expressed as 70. We've got a whole extra degree in there!

0

Honestly it doesnt matter. It depends on wind, humidity etc that difference between 20 and 21 is non-existent.

3
InFerNoreply
lemmy.ml

People round out time all the time, why is that different. C is more accurate, people round out of convenience. How accurate to a tenth of degree is almost never relevant. A cloud moves in front of the sun and you feel it change... so you ballpark it.

2

My stats for number of activities in cycling and running gives away my preference, but the winters gets rough in Scandinavia.

6

i went on a crusade ranking shitposts on how much a shitpost it truly was using my proprietary grading methodelogy, a score of 50% indicates the post qualifies as a meme, but does not have any recognisable identifiers of a shitpost

3

5

lemmy.world

What's with this guy suddenly showing up in all Lemmy meme communities?

3

For runners, the difference between 60F and 100F (~15.5 - 37.8 C) is about 2 minutes per mile at the same effort. That's a huge difference. Humidity makes it worse because your body's main method for cooling itself doesn't work, but sweating, comfort, and preference aside, its literally harder to do anything in the heat.

3

I just really hate cold weather and short days. My body is better at staying cool than warm. When you ask people what they like about winter they always say sweaters and fires, being warm. I like doing that without gear.

2

you can put on more layers in winter, but you can't get more naked in summer

In the Midwest we go from -40 to 110. They both blow, but snow is the deciding factor for me.

2

That's really funny because it's the same for me : snow is the absolute thing I would gladly never see again and wouldn't miss it, even for a second. But I have to agree that 45°C is hell, as is -20°C.

34°C (94F) is the perfect temperature. Acceptable upper limit would be 38°C (100F), above that it's hot. Acceptable lower limit is 25°C (77F), below that it's cold

Record is 56c in 1913.

Here in Canada, we only hit 38c about 2 months ago, and its calmed down since. So tf you mean its like that now, bud?

4
lemmy.world

Idk why you keep putting c after the numbers. You should be putting d for degrees. Canada sounds way colder than I thought.

-10
lemmy.world

First, I know you're playing me. No one is this stupid by accident.

Second, even if d for degrees was right, 56d is still higher than 38d.
