Only a stopped clock is guaranteed to be right twice a day. A clock could run just a little bit slow or fast and it'll rarely be right.

Not the one in my car. It slowed about 1 minute per 2 months.

I stopped changing it for daylight savings to see how far off it would get, driven rarely as it was, and the answer is that it seems to be internally maintained even when the car is off because even months I didn't drive contributed to the lag.

Not only nobody will build monuments for him, I genuinely hope the Dems have the balls to tear down every stupid little shit he did. And seizing Trump tower and turning it into rent controlled housing would be the cherry on top. Also, turn Mar-a-Lago into a public park and name it Biden Park

59

That’s genuinely way better.

Frankly, Biden should not be memorialized either. He and the idiot fucking brain trust that is the DNC/DCCC were the ones who gave away the Republic to these kleptocratic fascists. My fury at him and Harris and the rest of the party establishment that enabled the second orange regime to win a second stint is, shall we say, not small. They did like, what, 20-30% of things reasonably well, and then just didn’t fucking pay attention to anyone but their fucking consultants for everything else, and that entire class of MBA fuckwits is famously sycophantic and Duning-Kruger-esque.

I'm 100% with you, problem is that in 4-8 years after Trump is gone, and with a Democrat as President, half the American population will have forgotten. Just like they did after Bush, and just like they did after 4 years of Trump's first term.

It's like half the American population is insane and never learn!?

11
lemmy.ml

When you artificially restrict your options in the voting booth (big shout out to First-past-the-post voting), solutions are few and far between.

Elections become who can be the 2nd worst, not the best. That's why the democrats wanted Trump to be free to run again. I am sure democrats couldnt stop thinking about how bad they could be and still force people to vote for them if they could run against Trump again.

2

It is true that FPTP is contrary to a well functioning democracy, but in USA it has become down to an insane option of intolerance and recklessness that since Trump was elected the first time has decidedly turned to fascism, against the less insane option.
But it is not only FPTP, it is also the whole concept of a President with extreme powers for a democracy.
A president like in USA will always boil down to 1 man, ultimately making it a binary option, and that man has way more power than any single person should have in a democracy.

There is absolutely no 2nd worst about Republicans. There is no way you can reasonably argue the Democrats are worse than the Republicans.
Republicans are the result of a feedback loop on insane rhetoric where psychopathy is interpreted as a symbol of freedom. And a government and media normalizing that psychopathic mindset.

In many cases that side of politics and media have completely lost contact with reality. That is textbook insane!

1

I started reading it and was wondering why all of it were like Republican taking points. Then saw it was Senate Republicans. First 3 points are due to pandemic and mishandling of trump's admin. 4 is due to Republicans driving up education. 5, 6 is due to unique California location that keeps all about trapped, California was infamous during 60s, 70s, 80s for it's smog. Catalyst converters + unique gasoline blend helped to get it down so we don't have higher cancer mortality. 7 governor doesn't control permits for building, that's don't by cities. 8, how is the cost of living now after trump fucked it up? I skimmed over the rest and either are issues that Republicans actively fight against (education, cost of living), issues that governor has no control over or "issues" that are non issues, especially when you responded in discussion that Newsom wasn't conservative enough.

I live in California and didn't need someone who never was in my state to tell me how bad it is, I know how it is.

1

you responded in discussion that Newsom wasn't conservative enough.

That was not my intention. I should have used different sources. I can try again.

I can agree that the pandemic was a challenge, but he's taking money from people who can't afford it instead of from his fellow rich people.

Newsom’s opposition to the ballot measure – which would levy a one-time 5% tax on any residents of the state worth more than $1bn – comes amid an uproar from some of California’s most prominent billionaires.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/13/gavin-newsom-california-billionaire-tax

The loudest reactions came from advocates for the poor and elderly. They decried Newsom’s plan to scale back an expansion of Medi-Cal health care to undocumented immigrants that he had championed last year, as well as his imposition of $100 monthly premiums, elimination of some benefits, limits on at-home care and tighter qualifications for benefits.

“The 2025–26 budget proposal fails to marshal the resources needed to help vulnerable Californians meet basic needs like health care, housing, and food assistance,” the left-leaning California Budget and Policy Center said.

...

there were also adverse reactions from public employee unions over Newsom’s intention to hold down state worker raises and from city and county officials over a lack of grants for homelessness.

...

Medical care providers dislike both Newsom’s Medi-Cal restrictions and his diversion of funds from a special tax on health care approved by voters last year meant to increase payments for treatment.

Environmentalists are angered by Newsom’s declared intention to fast-track a tunnel beneath the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to increase water deliveries to Southern California.

Advocates of Proposition 36, a voter-approved measure to crack down on some crimes that Newsom opposed, decry his failure to include funds for implementation.

https://calbudgetcenter.org/news/statement-on-governor-newsoms-2026-27-budget-proposal/

Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 682 (Allen) which was approved by the legislature last month and which would have banned PFAS or “forever chemicals” in six product categories - cookware, dental floss, children’s products not covered by previous legislation, non-paper based food packaging, ski wax, and cleaning products.

...

the Governor’s veto message cited industry’s unsupportable arguments about costs and ignored data provided by the bill sponsors showing the argument to be specious.

...

He also vetoed another Clean Water Action sponsored bill, AB 823 (Boehner), which would simply have banned plastic microbeads used as cosmetic glitter or in cleaning products. The bill had no recorded opposition, yet the Governor’s veto message stated that a to “ban specific ingredients, such as glitter, … may incidentally result in a prohibition on biodegradable or natural alternatives”. In fact the intent of the bill was to drive companies to use those safer alternatives.

I hope I'm wrong. But I've seen a few of these now. That's how I think it will all go down.

0
lemmy.today

Honestly, you may be right. But treating it like a certainty only makes it easier for them. We should be highlighting better alternatives.

Harris, Newsom, Shapiro are out for me, they're pro-Israel. Ossof has accepted contributions from Israel. Pritzker was an AIPAC board member.

It is very difficult to find candidates without ties to Israel: https://www.trackaipac.com/2028

AOC would be my pick if she runs. Khanna would be my second choice.

3

Go ahead and make your list by whatever metric you want. Use the Primary as your platform. But don't be one of those people who disengages if someone who doesn't meet your standards gets nominated.

If those other folks are too pro-Israel for you in the Primary, that's fine. But if it goes to the General, and it's Newsom or Shapiro or Ossoff vs. Some MAGA loser, don't use it as an excuse to sit out. Because if a bunch of people who found excuses to not vote for Harris has shown up instead in the right zip codes, and Harris was President right now, everyone would be much better off, including the folks in Gaza.

Sometimes, there are just no good choices, but not choosing is worse.

4

13
3abasreply
lemmy.world

What's your point? If they built it in their time, the Jim Crow south would have destroyed them a hundred years earlier?

-1
lemmy.world

The people depicted on those statues didn't want monuments built to them in the first place. That's the difference between Trump and those guys.

They might have been racist upper class douchebags, but they didn't want to be remembered for their part in the most destructive and pointless war on American soil. They had a sense of shame, something Trump doesn't have.

0

I don't know about this `racists who fought a war over owning slaves "had a sense of shame" and "didn't want to be remembered for their part in the most destructive and pointless war" take.

When they eventually did build statues, they imported them from the north. They didn't build them in their lifetime because it wasn't a popular thing to do, and as such they literally didn't have the skills or foundries to make them. Not to mention they were actually fighting a war, not sitting in their bunkers ordering air strikes.

-1

Here's two scenarios: One, the fascists are completely defeated and lose all power. That's actually the situation where Trump will definitely get monuments. Just like the losers of the Civil War made a point to build a bunch of monuments celebrating what huge losers they were, similar losers will do the same for Trump.

A second scenario is that the fascists win. A dictator takes over and we lose all of our freedoms. If this happens, it won't be Trump, or at least it won't be Trump for long because he's so fucking old. He likely wouldn't be able to put one of his loser sons in charge, since they simply don't have whatever it is that Trump has. Even if they tried, I suspect some other Republican would easily seize power from him.

So that first real dictator Republican will want to glorify himself. He'll want to pretend like he seized power legally. As a result, it's quite likely that he'll blame everything on Trump. He'll point at Trump's insurrection in 2021 as proof that Trump was a bad guy. And everything that he says about Trump will be the sincere truth, because Trump really is one of the biggest villains in American history.

So anyways, my prediction is that if Trump "wins" and starts true fascism in America, just like he said, nobody will build monuments for him. Trump will be an easy scapegoat because all you have to do is say exactly what he actually did.

14
lemmy.today

When he's out of office, Congress should pass a law that it's illegal to name anything after Trump, EXCEPT: Sewage Treatment Plants.

12

so he admits he's not as great as he makes himself out to be, and that he is such a large piece of shit, and isn't worthy of monuments being made for him or praising/celebrating him? wouldn't that be an indicator that he's not doing anything or has done anything that is monument worthy? if we wouldn't build them now, why would be build them in the future?

11

The MAGAs are going to be all pissed off when we celebrate! I can't wait to laugh in their sobbing faces.

10
sh.itjust.works

Oh you poor soul, it's not only that, they are likely going to tear down any monuments or rename them when you are gone as well.

I see no route where regardless of party who gets in in 2028 is going to keep any of the names either, like "Lake America" and "Gulf of America", it's such an insult to the rest of the world anyone running would decide against it and without any real opposition against tearing down the existing monuments made, I don't see any real blockers.

I do think that they are likely right that the ballroom or whatever it ends up actually being will stay, but everything else? I firmly expect won't be.

I met a traveller from an antique land

Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:

And on the pedestal these words appear:

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.

- Percy Shelley, "Ozymandias"

"the hand that mocked them and the heart that fed" wat ?

3

The statue's features "tell" that the sculptor read those "passions" (the cold sneer, etc.) in the monarch's face, his general mood and way of treating the world. And in doing, those passions survive and appear in this statue.

I don't really understand "the hand that mocked them and the heart that fed".

2

mocked=imitated. So the skill of the sculptors hand that was able to capture the emotions (passions) that came from Ozymandias' heart where those emotions truely lived. They were part of his core being, not an act or a face he had to put on to be able to rule.

It's saying the sculptor was exceptionally skilled and was able to capture the very essence of Ozymandias' being.

yeah, he's such a loser that not even Satan will.. maybe Netenyahoo will get some from Satan, Trump won't.

biggest loser of a president, biggest traitor. said that he will bring peace and that the world with Iraq was a mistake. 3 seconds after he got president he started a war with Iraq. can't make this shit up.

and his followers can't even put it together. Now war is peace for them.

btw, they should love the flock cameras the most. you gotta love state surveilence.

He started a war with Iran. It was the Republican president before him, Bush, who started a war with Iraq.

yeah, I mean the middle east.. he was against these wars and then he started them for Netenyahoo.

Trump was never against war in Iran or the Middle East and he’s not for it now.

Trump’s only interest and allegiance is to Trump and always has been. Donald J. Trump is what NPD would be if it came to life off the pages of a psychology textbook.

1

And if they do, some of us will take national tours for the express purpose of pissing on every one of them.

4

Maybe something like the stones in rivers that indicate droughts and famine but with stupidity for Americans ? Trump will eventually be something to remember and watch out for.

4

Okay, how about a compromise: I'll agree to build a monument to him after he's gone, but he has to go AS SOON AS IS PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE.

3
lemmy.world

I was thinking of building the world's biggest pile of shit, like a roadside attraction.
We can name that after him if he wants.

3

I've replaced dump or shit with trump, and I've been calling my bathroom the oval office. As in "I've got a take a trump, I'll be in the oval office" The monuments to this piece of shit are made of porcelain and are already installed in all our homes.

2

Not only will we not build them, if he builds them for himself or vandalizes current monuments, we'll tear them down and recycle the material or sell it to provide free gender affirming care for trans people. Then we'll start public fundraisers for rebuilding the trump monuments so that the magat cult volunteers MORE money for--You guessed it!--the cycle to repeat until nobody would give a dime for a trump product as it should have been for all time.

From https://www.youngpioneertours.com/the-surreal-grave-of-pol-pot/

Upon his death, his body and possessions were transferred to a site in Anlong Veng where they were put into a pyre and burnt along Buddhist principles. Quite ironic when you consider the treatment given to the buddhists by the government of Democratic Kampuchea. There is a video of the aftermath of his funeral on YouTube. It is quite surreal to see one of the most notorious killers of the 20th century being burned with his toilet …

Trump has a gold toilet. Just sayin' ...

3

Diggin' in the crates of dictator deaths.

Thanks for this rabbit hole.

2
lemmy.world

I'd gladly donate to a trump memorial provided he puts it to use immediately. Big ol gaudy headstone, gold leaf, Jesus statue, the works.

3
lemmy.world

Don't worry we'll museums for him. These days, instead of newspaper headlines and TV footage we'll have wall of unhinged tweets and AI propaganda posted on the official POTUS feed

2

Nobody remembers that shit. We throw it in the memory hole because it's too embarrassing to think about. That's how it still keeps on happening when we should know better already.

1

I'd support the Trump Memorial Wind Farm as long as it was placed off the coast by one of his golf courses.

Dried, crusted santorum found caked around glory holes shall be referred to as Trump.

2

Oh we will build monuments, but they will be in celebration of his death. Like a monument pile of maga trash then burned, or a monument pile of champagne bottles we will be popping.

2

He's gonna get exactly one: The Trump National Public Bathroom and Dog Washing Station

And a memory care ward named after him around the Villages.

2

That is absolutely not true. I'll personally be campaigning to see that he is entombed under Centralia, Pennsylvania... and then renaming the town to trumpsville. He always did like his name on things. It would only seem fitting to charge people to visit it... just like he would want.

Its the perfect monument. Poetic even. It only seems right to cast a demon into proverbial hell -in- earth... in a place where "corruption" destroyed society. Most yuuuuge monument ever. And honestly? Its win win. I figure eventually the fire will be put out from all the people coming to piss on his grave. The proceeds can benifit the homeless and starving... I call it "trickle" down economics. After all: aren't we due some winning?

Shit it'd probably be the closest he ever came to telling the truth.

1

Maybe we'll get a trump version of crazy-eyes nathan bedford forrest, but other than eyesores erected by bigots, he's not getting anything, no.

1

A nice faux-golden toilet on the national mall, complete with a Vichy France styled triumphal outhouse.

1

Oh, come on. We need something to piss and defecate on.

Well, actually... His grave will suffice. But like, imagine the lines everyone.

1

The dream still is that he will face some kind of justice before he dies however unlikely...

1

Quite a few name re-changes and monument reardowns though. I hope the former east wing gets turned into a skate park

1

I will. I'll personally contribute to the construction of the Donald J. Trump Federal Penitentiary for Former Presidents and Other Fascists.

1

I look forward to throwing him in jail and burning everything with his name on it.

1

To paraphrase a great skit by a comedian I later lost a lot of respect for:

♪ Yo' plot-ty… ♪ Yo' plot-ty… ♪ Is a Port-A-Potty

1

I usually make him at least one monument daily but it disappears when I twist the lever controlling water flow into the bowl.

1

Someone will. A paid toilet with monuments to you, you worthless piece of shit child-rapist. There will be one that's a monument of how ugly and fat you are-- people can just freely wizz on that one. There'll be a monument of how gross your asshole mouth is-- people can shit in that one. See! Lots of monuments and some smart entrepreneur making bank.

1

Come on! I could imagine people building structures for him.

What? All those services to the Russian Federation and Israel will not be forgotten. Putin will build one with his bare hands.

0

Putin will be the boyfriend who rewrites history, ie, She was a dirty whore. He’ll say that to the next Republican mail order bride he picks—who will be stupid enough to not see that the same thing will be said of them.
