I'm at the Pizza Hut, I'm at the Taco Bell... I'm at the combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

Sorry for the earworm.

51

It's ok, shit's been stuck in my head for the last few weeks already... no idea why. It comes and goes, but it keeps popping into my head lol. Maybe I just need to give in and listen to it

3

I just had to watch it again. Such a great skit. Jason Sudeikis's yell at the end gets me every time.

3

This looks like the worst parts of a pizza and a taco mixed together, I'm sorry. It'd be crunchy in the wrong places and altogether too chewy.

64

Perfect if you want to invite all your Mexican and Italian friends over and end the night in a shallow grave that they agree to never speak of again.

33

In my experience pizza <insert any food that isn't pizza> is always disappointing.

Pizza bagels? Not great.

Pizza sandwiches? Also meh.

Pizza soup? Haven't had it, but also probably not great.

Pizza pizza? That's a calzone.

I expect pizza tacos to be just as dissappointing

9

Not everyone has to like what you like.

I stated my personal tastes regarding non-pizza pizzas, that is all.

-1

Guys it's just tacos with pepperoni on top.

What would be real solid is making like, chorizo pepperoni slices or something instead of the regular pepperoni

22

... They look very easy to make at home. Just get leftover minced meat from your spaghetti, melt some mozzarella and pepperoni on top, olives, some pesto, all on a hardshell taco. Maybe even bake the taco shell with some cheese to make extra crust.

2

Honestly, while it's hard to imagine eating one of those and actively disliking it, it's almost certainly just much worse than a pizza, if pizza is what you wanted, and maybe a slightly novel taco if you wanted a taco.

I haven't had one, I probably would, but it's much more a novelty than a real improvement on either pizza or a taco and probably not something you'd feel like having again.

6

Meanwhile, every swede here going. Why are they showing pictures of Tacos from 2006 and calling them Pizza tacos?

Also, You all know these are really simple to make yourself right? Pretty much minimal skill required. If you know how to put minced meat in a pan and turn the heat on. You're pretty much halfway there. The other half includes knowing how to turn on an oven.

The tacos will inevitably break too much after a few bites and everthing will start spilling on you, and it's your fucking fault for doing that.

27

Sounds like a skill issue. Just unhinge your jaw like a snake and eat it in one bite like normal.

This is why I always go for a soft taco instead. Hard tacos want to be salad and will detonate into corn-chip shrapnel the instant you take that first bite, unmercifully dumping its contents onto the table and your lap in the process. I can't imagine eating one mess-free, unless equipped with a jaw that unhinges and a supernaturally flexible neck.

13

It looks like soft shells in the photo, and I'd generally agree that they're better than hard shells.

The things that people from the US will eat, are beyond compression.

23

It almost looks like it comes from food hell, like a sinful pizza being tortured for all eternity.

I'm from the US and this looks like absolute garbage to me, but I'd argue French tacos are an even worse food crime.

Why not dunk it in batter and deep fry it? Cholesterol, heart burn and clogged arteries in one go, get in there!

Structurally and logistically there is no way that a shell transports pizza better than crust. Not to fault the 'tilla, just a different instrument for a different song

17
lemmy.world

Tbh, hard-shell tortillas don't even transport tacos that well. I love 'em, especially coated in Dorito dust, but it's a flawed system for sure.

No no. Box crispy shells suck. Real corn tortillas cooked in oil until crispy enough to hold a V shape but just soft enough to really envelope the filling. Holy crap that's delicious! Dude, I'm making tacos tomorrow!

9

Yeah I was talking about the box shells, I didn't realize that's not what is in the picture. Oops!

2

This is why they invented the soft taco - cheese - hard taco layer combo. I need to try it sometime

Well, those weird crunchy taco shells make no sense. They're a weird American thing, and I don't understand how they became popular. I like some crunch with my food too, but not a shell that just shatters when it's meant to contain the food.

A tortilla fried in a pan becomes somewhat crispy though, and it tastes better and holds together better. That's what this picture looks like. It should be fine.

1

Good point, I didn't look close enough at the pic and just assumed they were hard-shelled tacos.

1

They’re a weird American thing,

Well, no. They were invented in CaliMex cuisine, which evolved around California from Spanish and Mexican settlers, also taking some inspiration from Asian influences later.

Not only mission and california style buritoes, but also Calimex brought us taquitos as we know them, along with fish tacos.

Taco Bell probably brought them to the rest of the US and to some of the world, but they originated in Calimex.

But fusion and evolution have been the name of the game in food for centuries, even millenia. For example, look at how relatively recently tomatoes and potatoes went from the Americas to Europe and how much we consider them not to be fusion or newcomers now - but they were, not that long ago.

People disparage so many American cuisines, but especially Calimex and Texmex, and both of those are fully worthy of respect.

1

I'm not so sure. The best way to eat a pizza is to fold it, because that gives it more rigidity. You essentially turn it into a taco, but the shell has a slightly different texture. I have no idea why a tortilla wouldn't hold up in this situation.

2

I recently heard about and tried pizza beans. Just some kind of white bean (any white beans) cooked, and then you cover them in pizza sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni and broil it until the cheese is melted and caramelized a bit.

Sounded weird as hell, and I thought the texture would be horrible but the beans actually just kinda gave the same texture you get with pizza dough. Not as crispy, obviously, but like a Detroit style crust.

I might do these tacos but I wouldn't use the hamburger. Personally, I don't like how ground beef goes with the other pizza ingredients (i don't like burger on an actual pizza either)... But maybe refried beans would be great.

17

I've done similar things with pan-roasted vegetables (some mix* of zucchini, onion, carrot, celery, red bell or jalapeno, mushroom (roughly that order for most-to-least used) lid is used on-and-off). I'll throw pepperoni bits in at the end to brown a bit.

If I'm lazy I'll just add sauce after plated, sometimes cheese in the pan (not long enough to cause a mess), or throw it all in a tortilla and cook it again in an old electric grill (easier to dip it in sauce instead, too).

A few times I've pre-soaked pasta noodles in a 28oz bowl, microwaved them, drain then brown the noodles a bit in the pan with everything else and transfer it back to the noodle bowl and layer in the other pizza ingredients (w/further microwaving, plate-as-lid).

* usually 2-3 things, though I've done just zucchini+sauce before

Now and then I’ll make quesadillas with mozzarella and pizza toppings as the filling, then dip them in pizza sauce. It’s like a low carb pizza treat.

I tried to pick ones that weren't AI, but I may have failed. I sincerely apologize if the images are AI. Sometimes I can't tell the difference.

Yes! Most junk food is only junk because it's made as cheaply as possible with shitty ingredients. McDonald's gives you the shits because it's McDonald's, not because it's burgers and fries. Those pizzacos look potentially delicious IF you make them yourself.

8

McDonald’s gives you the shits

McDonald's has never given me the shits. What are you people doing with your food? Do you.... wash you hands, like, ever or anything?

6

Besides McDonald's using shit ingredients, I disagree with your entire statement. Junk food is food that lacks nutritional value and is high in calories; making nachos at home doesn't make them clean food. If you make pizza tacos at home, they'll still be junk food too.

It's ok to have some junk food sometimes, but if pizza tacos are a daily thing for someone I'm gonna assume they're from a poop knife kinda family.

2

Spoken like someone who hasn't seen how much butter goes into anything I cook 😅

1

Pizza isn't just about toppings. The crust reigns supreme... because the yeast culture adds a hint of sour. Also, have you ever had woodfired pizza? Nom nom.

And New York claims its pizza is amazing because of its water, or more likely its plumbing?

1

I dunno, I went looking for recipes to see what the process would be to keep the tortilla from falling apart as the beef released fats during baking and the sauce seeps in.

The gestalt is that you just minimize the fat in the first place, and have a layer of something that will shield the tortilla. Namely, cheese.

Brown low fat beef/meat/meat substitute. Warm the tortillas in a pan, and melt a layer of cheese on the tortilla.

From there it's just assembly and a long enough bake to melt the cheese that's on top.

Hypothetically, the tortillas should stay intact. Makes sense; other bread and bread-like things can take heavy sauces when there's a layer of cheese between.

As far as whether or not they'd taste good, well, taste is relative. I'm dubious of that much ground beef actually tasting pizza-ish enough to satisfy that desire. I'm okay with ground beef on pizza, though it isn't my fave. It's the ratio in the image that makes me dubious it'll hit the pizza urge.

I've been around long enough and done enough experimental cooking that I can usually "taste" a recipe without actually eating it as long as the ingredients are familiar enough. Nothing in the image, or the recipes I saw, would be bad at all, though some of the recipes really don't get what pizza sauce is. A lot of them are just dumping "Italian" herbs into the beef for some reason, like that's what makes a pizza a pizza. That does make a decent meat sauce for pasta in a pinch, but it isn't pizza flavor.

As a comparison, pizza dogs exist too. Cook hot dogs your preferred way. Place the buns in a baking dish. Place dogs in buns. Top with pizza sauce of choice. Top with shredded mozzarella. Bake until the cheese melts and is lightly browned. No pepperoni, no extras as the core, but it actually hits like pizza in terms of flavor. You wouldn't think so because of the hot dogs, but the sauce is the dominant flavor, followed by the cheese. Which is more pizza like than the pizza tacos in the image. Sorta like a meatball sub more than actual pizza though.

All of that rambling being said, I think it would taste at least okay to most palates. There's nothing that would clash, and nothing that would dominate so much as to be offputting. I'd actually agree that some extra seasoning in the beef would go a long way, but I'd focus on some garlic, maybe a little oregano, rather than a premix, or multiple herbs. Just something to lift the beefiness into a less burger-y taste.

8

Yeah, if I were to attempt these, I'd precook the ground beef so I could drain it appropriately, then try to assemble and finish the pepperoni and cheese under like a low broil. But I'd cook the beef itself relatively unseasoned in the hopes that either mixing it with pizza sauce or layering pizza sauce between the beef and cheese would tie everything together flavor-wise.

I'd also skip the pepperoni entirely because it gives me nightmarish heartburn, but that's neither here nor there.

2

Goddamn. I'm eating Mexican food right now and this makes me want to throw it all away just for these.

I'm a fatass that still eats junk food.

6

I was gonna say ew gross but then I clicked the image.

Fuck! OP, now I want pizza tacos too! What have you done?!

4

I don't see a way to make this that doesn't turn the flour tortilla into a husk. You'd be better off with corn, but then the shell would get soggy before the pepperoni crisped.

Way too much work for some jank tacos. Just throw some taco meat onto a totinos and fold it in half.

Not really lol. It takes all of a few seconds to fry up some cheese in a pan.

2

Are you still able to eat junk food? I get the shakes when I eat take out and fast food. It’s weird. It’s all of that crap hitting my bloodstream at once. I literally struggle to hold my fork.
