I don't understand how Patrick hiding a DDOS attack in his "goodbye" message isn't grounds for banning his alts on that server according to their policy. It literally is breaking the law in many countries

Edit: for that matter, .world should consider the same for his alts there

James R Kirk - he was posting like an impartial observer on Fediverse vs Disinformation @db0 in a breakdown of the ban list thread. Things like:

The dev posted a response in c/Tesseract but you're mostly correct. They wanted to make it easier for like minded future admins to be able to spin up a Lemmy instance without having to know all of the lore.

Then when people called him out he started becoming a frothing troll.

Agreed.

It showed the broad spirit of the users, and that the fundamental nature of the federation design model... works literally exactly as it was intended to.

Sure, you can be the petty tyrant of your own fiefdom.

But no one rules everything, and anyone, at a comparatively low actual cost of entry, can make their own fiefdom, if they want to.

Maybe we should all be thanking nutomic and Dessalines, regardless of any specific disagreements any of us may have with them, for doing the fundamental conceptual and coding work.

Or, frankly, because of the disagreements. Whatever bullshit you can say they pulled, at least it wasn't, yknow, this.

12

I would definitely agree. Despite our differences, we all have one thing in common. We don't like being deceived by those who build the frontends we use. We trust our credentials to these people and trust they aren't going to screw us over. He violated that trust and people are right to be pissed about it.

15

It's true, we usually spend most of our time hating eachother for not being the right kind of leftist. This has been a united front as far as I've seen.

13

Hell, it's the first time I've seen everyone open to reasonable discussions of ideas like his in a long time. By setting up a boundary that everyone vocally agrees is unacceptable suddenly there's a sense of trust that people aren't all rushing towards it.

4

9

I just think it’s hilarious that instead of “saving” the fediverse they fractured it.

I dunno. The fediverse seems mostly united against admiralpatrick and his alts.

7

Lemmy.world isn't going to take action against his account. They already don't take actions against the no-content sockpuppet accounts and extremist trolls who use their instance. They should take action against them, they likely won't though.

Lemmy.world isn’t going to take action against his account.

Of course not. He's basically jordanlund if he knew how to code.

8

Do you really think jordanlund would be able to stay away from this thread if it were him?

2

Who's to say he hasn't? Using alts is a form of engagement. Using his main account risks being banned for it in a lot of places, and that stops him from doing that smug confrontation thing he likes to do.

79

That's because they were the star trek mods from reddit pre-apicalypse. Not having duplicate communities in Reddit and all power concentrated into one mod group or even worse one person is what attracted me to Lemmy in the first place. Not all, but from what I've seen, former mods from Reddit tend to have the entitlement of my community should be the only community.

38

It's one thing to have an alt, (I do, and I intentionally block my account and all politics/negative things to keep space, it's more for looking at memes and making them), its another to pretend it's not you and defend yourself.

30

The way he uses these alts is very Reddit-like, keeping them dormant until it is time to wake them up to sockpuppet. He has to invent false users to side with him because he's utterly alone otherwise and he can't handle it. Nobody else sees him for the last bastion of Lemmy sanctity and purity that he thinks he is.

35
Catoblepasreply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

How many differently named alts is it normal to have? I could accept like, one or two for safety reasons (never want to connect too much info about yourself). But the known ones (Admiral Patrick, ptz, Kirk) plus all the others who feel suspiciously strongly in favor of him despite being almost entirely inactive is for sure suspicious. Like… whatcha stockpiling all those for, man??

31

If you're doing app development you tend to aquire accounts - straightforward things like testing interactions between users in different conditions means you quickly wind up with a spare heap of them. It's why pretty much every open-source crashout like this has the same period of rooting out alt accounts and "randos" coming to defend a dev "they" like after being inactive for years.

17

I think by the time you hit 5 you need a long hard look in the mirror. 1 for NSFW stuff you don't want to associate with your main is normal, 1-2 for breaking up information or other stuff. Then 1 more because I'm sure there are other reasons. But 5? What are you even doing at 5?

I had forgotten the reason the .website was first formed, and then some of the posters returned to .world later. I wonder if there is anyone out there documenting all the different lore bits.

11
Stametsreply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Well, I'm the one who caused the exodus from Startrek.website so... if you've got any questions, just ask.

The tl;dr was thus:

ST.W was made in response to redditors leaving reddit. It was created, and is run, by the same moderators who created and ran /r/StarTrek. Those moderators have a metric ton of drama surrounding them on reddit to the point that Star Trek fragmented into a hundred different subreddits to avoid being associated with what everyone was considering toxic moderation. Even toxic by reddit standards.

So when startrek.website started, the same behavior did too. Curtailing opinions is a big one. [email protected], one of the admins, literally cannot help himself. He's a diehard defender of the newer treks, much like I am, but he takes any slight against the show as an active insult. Where I will only remove things that are categorically false or dogwhistle-type homophobia/racism, he will remove anything that is negative about the newer shows. He will tell you to stay on topic or be positive and refuses any negative coverage.

I first joined startrek.website as Stamets (although I was on lemmy before that) and started posting. Things were going well until I started seeing posts removed from their Star Trek meme community for nonsense reasons. I asked the admins what was up and they handwaved away the abuse from the moderator of that community (USS Burrito Truck) and their own abuse. So I left startrek.website and set up TenForward on lemmy.world (something I've left for [email protected] although I've been very inactive for the past month due to life). I sent messages to the other big posters who were active, friends of mine by that point, asking if they'd want to join me on TenForward. They said yes. By this point, nothing was really posted publicly by me save for a comment or two around the time I left. Those comments were removed/deleted.

The first couple weeks went by smoothly for the comm but not for me. ValueSubtracted started reaching out to several admins of different instances, asking them all to ban me from their instances. Those admins all reported it to me like "What is his problem?" and denied him. So I made a post on Mastodon saying that people should consider staying away from startrek.website due to some odd admin decisions. Within 24 hours I had gotten an email from my mastodon instance saying that there was a report against that post and I needed to clarify it with my admin. I gave her the information and she said the report had no merit and dismissed it. But it was clear who made the report.

We then started getting reports on TenForward for every tiny comment and every tiny post, accusing the community of causing cross instance harassment that was directed towards them. Most of these comments were passively talking about what was going on. There was no hate or harassment but the reports were coming from ValueSubtracted and were overloading the report section. Like maxing out the character count.

I asked him politely to stop several times and he kept doubling down and refusing to stop. It was at that point, realizing he wouldn't stop until he was forced to, that I made a giant post about it. Included all the screenshots of the private messages he sent me, the reports, the insane shit, everything. Proving conclusively that the level of harassment they had risen to was going across multiple websites.

That post was lost when I deleted my lemmy.world account. Or so I thought. Someone sent me the internet archive page for it yesterday. So if you're curious yourself...

44
lemmy.world

I'm struck by incompetent of moderators they must be to think these attacks would work

10

It's pathetic. They tried the same thing again a few months ago when I made another post updating their sketchy behavior. They're so predictable that I used the phrase 'scorched earth', quoting VS as probably saying thats what he was going to do. Little did I know until after was that he did use that phrase. When I quoted him for it, he lost his fucking mind and had a meltdown in the matrix channel before leaving in a huff.

Remember kids, wishing death upon mass murderers makes you just as bad as them actually.

Edit: to the coddled, enlightened brunchers incapable of reading the room, itching to have their righteous moment under my comment: next time the IDF starts randomly airstriking the shit out of my quaint little (Christian no less) town, I personally invite you to join me for coffee and contemplating mortality on my veranda. I’ll be so impressed by your opinion on the lives of the people who are dropping WAR ORDINANCE around you and consider me a terrorist because of where I’m from (and you one for sitting for coffee with me). It’ll be so inspiring. You’ll love it, I make decent coffee. Wouldn’t that be fun.

53

I don't know the exact scenario being referenced above, but personally I don't believe in the death penalty for anything. I truly believe people can change and be reformed. Not that everyone will, but everyone can be. Death robs of any opportunity or hope.

I also understand there is a lot of nuance around this conversation. I don't judge anyone for believing differently, as long as its for good reasons.

1
sh.itjust.works

Wishing death upon others makes you a bad person. People don't like to be around others who wish or encourage harm towards others. That's why dbzer0 was defederated and will continue to be in the future. Don't like it? Grow up, and stop wishing people to die loser!

-13

Out of curiosity what app do you use? For whatever reason I've never been able to get .gifs to upload (work in comments) using Jerboa.

11

Boost.

GIFs often fail to upload due to size restrictions of the instances we use. When that happens, I upload to imgur or catbox and embed the link instead.

14

I've noticed that when you copy-paste a gif it ends up with only the first frame as a still image, but if you actually save it as a .gif file and then upload it, it works.

This is with either the default web UI or Voyager, BTW.

10

Glad I already deleted my account there. And blocked the instance.

Shame, but I'd rather not be around members of a fandom that actively support shitty and shady practices like that, and I sure as FUCK don't want an admin that's complicit

53

I mean at least it is an instance doing the defederation and announcing it publicly (so people who don't like this can leave). This also makes a great example for people who don't understand the difference between banning lists in apps vs instances.

I'm not surprised. They were shit mods back on reddit and continue their shitty ways here in the fedi

Most are fine, there are a few right wing instances that crop up but most instances defederated from them fairly quickly (unless you're on an "as long as it's not illegal" instance, which include dbzer0, Lemmy.zip and lemmy.sdf.org)

The ones that are somewhat still federated but best to avoid are the ones known as the Tankie Triad, Hexbear Lemmygrad and Lemmy.ml.

Hex and grad are fairly widely defederated from, including your instance, because of their tankie authoritarian ideology (Supports and defends authoritarian countries like Russia and NK (they'll spread propaganda like Ukraine deserved to be invaded by Russia and it's not even Russia invading but "liberation")). Lemmy.ml tends to not be, because they try to keep it more subtle, there's this mega thread that documents it. It's lemmy.ml centric, but general rule of thumb is that whatever Lemmy.ml does hex and grad are known to be worse.

Most other instances are fine, .world...is just too big and that "power" has tended to go to their heads sometimes, though I will say not to the mass degree that Lemmy.ml does.

Oh and startrek.website is pretty shit, but you could tell that from this post LMAO

16

I'm on one of my alts because my main instance (.today) had a hiccup - which rarely happens. Maybe twice in the last year, if I recall correctly.

I've tried five different instances. Lemmy.today doesn't defederate from anyone so you can see the whole lemmyverse and curate your experience from there, instead of having admins decide what you should and shouldn't see. The rules are standard but lax, bigots and abusers still get banned, but it's largely up to the mods to watch over their communities.

Alternatively, if you like a healthy, pre-curated experience at the other end of the spectrum, you could try Beehaw. They're more focused on creating an engaging, well-moderated, welcoming community.

5

You're on Lemmy.world which is a very large lib instance (very dem friendly, but highly sanitized). They have defederated with the leftests (hexbear.net, Lemmy.ml [the Lemmy dev's home instance], and lemmygrad.ml) over "extreme views" and the anarchists (Lemmy.dbze0.com) over piracy support (oh my mistake, they just blocked all piracy communities) long time ago. I'll let someone else explain the flotilla.

As for good instances, it depends what kind of experience you want to have. Why isn't there an instance test yet?

3
Taleyareply
aussie.zone

nah, scare quotes can naff off. Hexbear was dogpiling like crazy and .ml is just...IDK what they're doing over there but everyone's banned from it.

12

It's not scare quotes, I'm representing that this was .world's view.

And what hexbear was doing was interacting with the common reditor refugee after interacting with nothing but their leftest instance for years. It was a clash of cultures, and I think the right thing happened. I think that's the great thing about the fediverse - being able to decide (as instance, comm, or user) who you interact with, which was what the tesseract dev was taking away from people.

10

Hexbear was never federated with world, to paraphrase worlds words they were "preemptively defederated as a last resort"

4
lemmy.world

World has never defederated from lemmy.ml, partially because they're the dev's home instance.

10

You're right. Its been so long since I've been on .world that i forgot. I think its also because so many comms are on there too if I remember. I should have known though because I see .worlders in YPTB complaining about .ml sometimes.
