"Misery loves company"

When you see stuff like this, people just randomly hating on something that just seems so out there it's usually because they're insanely depressed and/or their life is in shambles. So the guy is in a miserable state and lashes out in hopes he can somehow make others lives equally as miserable so then he finally, in a way, won't feel "alone".

32

In this case, the company that the misery seems to love would be the Microsoft.

12

Lol yes that didn't make any sense. They should remove #3 to at least keep it coherent

10

They mean "non-toxic within the community, toxic to everyone who we deem isn't a 'true scotsman'"

2
hakasereply
lemmy.zip

I mean, it's no different than AI Sucks, FuckCars, and a ton of other communities here (and I say this as a 3-year exclusive Linux user).

Edit: lol at how many people are having to justify it to themselves that their pet communities centered entirely around hating something are totally different bro from the community centered entirely around hating something they happen to like.

If there's one thing that unites all of Lemmy, from the tankies to the libs to the anarchists, it's a complete absence of self-awareness.

-7

Not really. People have reasons for hating AI and cars, and for going against the grain by doing so.

Linux is just... Linux... anyone who doesn't like it doesn't have to use it. It's just there, waiting to provide an alternative option to anyone who wants to break away from the proprietary mainstream...

16

Like the other comment implies, we don't get to choose to not live in a car-centric world, or one where AI companies aren't fucking everything up. For that matter, we also don't get to live in a world where Linux is prioritized over a corporate OS in the wider world. A FuckAI, FuckCars, or even FuckWindows community makes sense, in that we need to fight to change the status-quo to improve the world.

FuckLinux is fighting for the status quo. It is actively pushing the repressive option. That's how it's different. It is not trying to change things; it's trying to prevent things from changing.

(Also, Lemmy is FOSS. If you're advocating against FOSS then you should leave. How does someone like that even end up here?)

67

To be fair, I've seen their arguments outside of the Linux space, and they're very anti union, pro billionaires, and defend trump.

It is all circumstantial evidence, and they may be just trolling, but it's not a good look.

No, this part is fine. They made a space to talk about their obsession and have no obligation to let strangers come and tell them how to.

18

Fear not, because a single person doesn't constitute a community. And Madthumbs gets talked about every six months or so, when a batch of new users discover them. Everyone then completely forgets about them until the next cycle.

8

My first thought was that this was a parody of /r/conservative

6

A single user making dozens of posts and rarely getting any response? I wouldn't call that egregious, it just seems ineffective to me.

As an IT, I can confirm we have to use the terminal for some sketchy workarounds every time we install Windows just to skip the Microsoft account thing

34

Just add an autounattend.xml answers file in the iso before installing windows.
I use https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator/

Recently I had to re-install and configure a bunch of software on 20ish machines.
All I had to type during the install was the hostname, and powershell scripts did the rest (granted, those powershell scripts contained all the bullshit to get windows to actually behave and work like a proper OS).

11
programming.dev

Uhhhh, are you not getting enterprise windows or whatever version is needed to be added to active directory?

I set up quite a few computers for my last job and I just had to click the thing saying I was adding the computer to a domain and then I skipped the microslop account.

7

Microslop does not want you to install Windows without a telemetry identifier Microslop account anymore. Not even Enterprise edition.

1

you don't have to install it because it's already there

This sums up their knowledge in a single sentence, really. I wonder if they know they can build a computer and it won't "have" anything on it. Or that Apple computers exist.

14

drivers install for you without having to find them

Lmao, lol even. Imagine not having a monolithic kernel. Imagine having a micro kernel where drivers need to be installed.

Yeah, I really want a Nexus Mod Manager for Linux. They were working on one that would be universal, but that was killed IIRC. I think they may have said they'll try to make the existing one work on Linux, but I can't remember.

It's possible to get Vortox to work on Linux, but it's a pain in the ass. You need to run in in the prefix, and I think it even needs to be installed there to manage things properly for some reason (I may be misremembering this). Some pieces of it will never work, so you'll always have warnings, which is annoying. Magnet links also don't work, and you have to copy/paste the link into the download mod thing. Overall, it's a pain in the ass, but it's still sadly the best option for many games. Most games I just do it manually at this point, but Skyrim needs a lot of mods for me to want to play it.

2

It's either satire or else it's Microsoft doing guerilla marketing...

Just spam them with FreeBSD stuff then.

FreeBSD and its derivatives ≠ Linux

Not to mention that more things run Linux than Windows including the router those people who hate Linux are using its running Linux.

Edit... FYI: I am a Linux user. My home server is TrueNAS (Linux based but been using it since FreeNAS 9.1), my desktop is Ubuntu Cinnamon, I use android for phones and tablets, my router is OpnSense (which is FreeBSD based but still FOSS.)

27

And this will be my last post on the subject. Look out for my post on c/linuxsucks.

https://lemmy.world/post/48179739

Listen up, folks. We all know Linux sucks. It’s a fact. But I did some digging, and the conspiracy goes way deeper than just some neckbeard's broken desktop environment.

It turns out Linux has infected literally everything. And since Linux sucks, by transitive property, the entire modern world sucks and we need to stop using all of it immediately.

If you are a true Linux hater, it is time to walk the walk. Here is the hit list of things we need to boycott starting today:

1. The Internet

Yep, turn off your router. The Internet runs on Linux. The vast majority of the world’s web servers, DNS servers, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) are powered by Linux. Every time you open a webpage, you are validating Linus Torvalds. If you’re reading this post right now, you are part of the problem. Smash your modem. It sucks.

2. Smartphones (Yes, even yours)

Are you reading this on an Android? Congratulations, you are carrying a modified Linux kernel in your pocket. It sucks. Oh, you have an iPhone? Well, the massive server farms that Apple uses to sync your iCloud data, send your iMessages, and process your Apple Pay run on—you guessed it—Linux. Throw your phone in a lake.

3. Entertainment and Streaming

Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube: Their massive backend streaming infrastructure? All Linux. Smart TVs: Most of them run on Linux-based firmware. If you want to watch a movie, go outside and act it out with puppets. Digital entertainment is ruined.

4. Space Exploration

NASA sent the Ingenuity helicopter to Mars, and it was powered by a Linux distribution. Space sucks now. SpaceX rockets? Linux. We can’t even leave the planet to get away from it.

5. High-Speed Rail and Air Travel

Commercial aviation routing systems, air traffic control data feeds, and international bullet train networks rely heavily on Linux for uptime and reliability. If you want to travel, you better buy a horse. (Just make sure the horse hasn't been microchipped by a vet using a Linux database).

6. The Entire Global Economy

The New York Stock Exchange, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and virtually all major banking backends run on Linux because they need "99.999% uptime." You know what else has 99.999% uptime? Garbage. Money sucks. Go back to the barter system.

  1. Windows and Microsoft (The Ultimate Betrayal)

Oh, you thought you were safe because you only use Windows? Think again! This goes all the way to the top. The mechanism used to fix, patch, and secure every Windows machine on Earth—Windows Update—is powered by a Linux backend. Microsoft uses Linux servers and container networks to push out their own updates because apparently, Windows Server can’t even handle distributing its own code. So every time your PC forces a random reboot to install a security patch, a Linux server just handed Windows its lunch. Windows sucks so hard that it literally relies on Linux to fix itself, which means Windows is Linux by proxy. They both suck!

Conclusion: The Ultimate Protest

If we are going to be pure, we have to commit. I am calling for a total and complete shutdown of modern society until the entire global infrastructure is rewritten in pure, unadulterated Windows ME. This is my final post. I am smashing my PC, disconnecting my power grid (because utility companies use Linux to manage the smart grid), and moving into a cave.

Who is with me?!

Awww, I got banned.

33

And while I was blocking the linux sucks moderator and posters something occurred to me. Most of the Lemmy instances are probably hosted on Linux as are the cloud providers among other things.

It they think linux sucks so badly they should cut it completely out of their lives and that means they shouldn't be using the internet.

7

It's just one guy who gets off on being contrarian and takes getting downvoted to oblivion every time as confirmation that he is fighting some kind of evil conspiracy.

26
lemmy.world

Trolling, duh. I suppose there's a remote chance that someone just happened to turn... kinda strawman Linux evangelist-y about being anti linux, but I wouldn't put a ton of money on that.

12

You really don't have to be tech literate to use the fediverse imo. To fully interact with it, maybe, but a former Reddit user can figure out the basics in an hour or two

4

Oh, that just means it's definitely trolling, apparently definitely working rather well, too. That's just too ham fisted tbh.

4

Someone wiþ a less obviously pro-Linux history þan myself should post about how great Windows is because it's an OS created by a liberal, and how money spent on Windows goes to support vaccination efforts around þe world, how MSN has a great left bias, and how Microsoft has a history of supporting Progressive causes. All of which is true, and I wonder how þe mod would react.

-5

Yes, and the joke is on the people taking it seriously, like every other form of "look how intensely dumb I am" trolling

8

Even if it is not, it looks like an excellent source of Linux memes.

It's basically one person, and I thought it was just an elaborate troll but the longer it goes on I'm starting to think this person is completely serious and mentally unwell.

The winner was this elderly lady "Dottie Com" who apparently was called "Dot" her whole life, and had never been on the Internet.

17
fedia.io

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

12

One of the only disadvantages of lemmy is that any moron can start an instance or community lol

11

Could have been a fun community to meme and shit on linux elitists but the creator is either seriously angry about it or rage baiting.

10

Isn't that the idiot who managed to get banned by the automod bot?

Besides, the Unix Haters' Handbook is always worth a read for laughs. Some stuff still hasn't been fixed (looking at you, rm and useless man pages)

9

Not the first troll community here, won't be the last. There are a few really popular ones that are far worse though - this one just sounds unhinged.

8

It's a sort of pendulum effect. Lemmy as a whole is very Linux-focused, almost militantly so (see my other Linux-related posts and comments). So people who feel otherwise form their own knot of extremists, alienating people who don't feel strongly either way.

5

I've seen negative numbers show up before on here. It's usually a federation thing, like someone joining didn't federate properly but them leaving did.

4

I'm having a chuckle because I know who exactly this is offending and it's showing in the comments.

2

Can't be bothered to check it.

Is it:

  1. Windows, MacOS and various phone users
  2. Everything else (OpenBSD...)?
2

I guess someone really hates Linux, and he wants his online space to find like-minded people echo chamber. Nothing wrong with that. Tbh, I think there is no issue with this (they are in their self-contained bubble) and I think it's problematic that the other side is actually reacting at all at this. By even reacting, you reduce yourself to that level.

-3
