Stay the hell out of peoples bedrooms you damn Nazis.

Unfortunately, we have a large and wealthy class of people who believe kicking in your bedroom door and arresting you for the crime of fucking is good public policy. And until those people lose power, they will continue to fund the social and literal murder of the LGBTQ community.

Complicating things further, we have monetized the process of stigmatizing minority groups. So not only do we have a wealthy upper class that believes in sexual prohibition. We have a profit-seeking industrial system that wants to maximize the amount of money generated through surveilling, assaulting, imprisoning, and publicly castigating members of the underclass. Until that engine of profit-seeking is destroyed, we're going to see poor residents turned against one another in the struggle to access the enormous economic surpluses horded by the upper class.

39
piefed.social

The only way for them to lose power is for them to lose their life. But not enough of you Lefties own guns compared to MAGA, and you continue to vote in favor of restricting ownership in most blue/left-leaning states. So it's not going to be well for anyone for the next fifty years.

No. It is to empower local militias to take land from unincorporated native peoples.

Absent the legal authority to communicate your grieveness, congregate a movement in opposition, and define your ideological tenants free from persecution, how do you build up a militia with which to resist a tyrannical state?

Unless you're psychic, there's no way to mobilize a mass movement. The best you can do as a lone gunman is stocastic violence.

Religion is a tool used by Fascist. You don't defeat Fascism by pretending one of its tools is the true problem. Religion can just as easily be a tool of anti fascist resistance movements. Removing that tool from leftist movements has been a vital flaw of many revolutions.

I am not religious. But saying we should abolish religion will just have the "Ms. Rachel" types of Christians with actual real moral compass (her stance on Gaza obviously being one) caught in crossfire.

There is no working class movement without embracing religion as a tool to form solidarity. Religion is not just all fundamentalist idiots.

3
wheezyreply

There are a lot of religious groups helping to protect people from ICE right now. Blindly saying to stop giving money to religious groups across the board is either malicious or naive. I assumed naive.

Why do you think the feds gave the ability for ICE to enter religious buildings that use to be protected?

Religion is a tool. It's not good or bad in some fundamental way.

2
chatokunreply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

This is a common defense of religion, but it naively (or maliciously) ignores that secular groups help to protect people as well. Unlike religions, secular non profits are required to show how they spend their money, so the help is more direct and you can confirm if they are using the money you donate the way you want instead of some of it going to bigotry.

If it's a tool it's a bad one. You can't even check if it's working right. It's like a tool you can't check and just hopes it works the way you want it to.

2
wheezyreply
lemmy.ml

It's not a defense of religion. I don't know why atheist Andy's have a hard time understanding that THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE RELIGIOUS.

So, instantly alienating religion and religious groups is just giving away a huge part of the population away to fascist propaganda. Religion can be used as a tool of anti fascist for leftist propaganda too though.

If you don't understand that then you clearly have never spoken with any leftist from the black communities of the South. Religion is a fundamental unifying part of any movement of solidarity there.

2

I literally am a black leftist in GA. I, nor the first person said to alienate nor abolish religion. Op said to stop giving religion money, and I pointed out giving money to religion is better spent giving money to organizations that directly help, and specifically help.

There are also organizations working towards making communities for black people who aren't religious, such https://blacknonbelievers.org/

I welcome religious people and churches helping out, and I'm not going to say anyone should reject such help. I am saying, that as a religious or non religious person, directly giving to organizations that help specifically would help much more than giving to a religion. It's similar to say the difference between getting ad revenue and Patreon or other direct donations. The latter is more effective.

Lastly, I will say there definitely is a critique of religion, in that many either way into a global fund/membership that donates to organizations that have contributed to where we are now, or directly do so themselves. Can I gaurantee every single one does? No, mainly because as I pointed out they have special rules where they can hide where their money goes. Some small unaffiliated churches may be completely clean.

However, those aren't even the ones you are talking about, since you specified the large populations of religious people in the south. Those standard denominations definitely gave to anti LGBT, anti abortion, and donated to have exceptions in law carved out for themselves, which significantly contributed to GOP effort to stiffle freedoms. That money helped Trump

The woman who accused then-Fox News host Pete Hegseth of sexual assault in 2017 said that while she did not have a complete recollection of the night in question, she "remembered saying 'no' a lot" and alleged that he prevented her from leaving his hotel room, according to a police report from the Monterey, Calif., police department.

The student newspaper he ran in college suggested that you can’t rape someone who is unconscious.

Furthermore, the leadership's will to indoctrinate is demonstrated by such fiascoes as the aforementioned "Reflections on Diversity" and also "Sex on a Saturday Night." The latter, a bemusing yet mandatory orientation program, revolved entirely around whether an instance of sexual intercourse constituted "rape." The actual instance portrayed in the skit was in fact not a clear case of rape – at least not in my home state. (In short, though intercourse was not consented to, there was no duress because the girl drank herself into unconsciousness. Both criteria must be satisfied for rape. Unfortunately, the panelists never cited any legal definition of rape.) Yet the panel – all females in the session I attended – claimed that rape it was. Regardless of technicalities, this esoteric incident was the sole focus of the presentation. The panel ignored the mundane yet profound moral issues surrounding sexuality with which the student is confronted on a daily basis. The administration does the student body a great moral disservice when it implements a program covering the logistics of the one-night-stand, in a very permissive manner, while ignoring the metaphysics.

He’s been married three times and is a serial adulterer.

8
lemmy.today

Y'know, gays are just normal people with a specific sexual orientation, and not all people make that sexual orientation their primary identity. Someone might be a swinger, but they don't go around making that the first thing they want to be known for.

A person who happens to be gay, may think other things are more important to their personal identity, like their career, or their art, or their political perspective, and want those things to be what represents them to society, not their sexuality. Frankly, that's how MOST people think. Very few people want their sexuality to be the first thing that others know them for.

As for gays being conservative working against their own self-interest? There's no shortage of that, i.e. conservative minorities, immigrants, women, poor, sick, etc. Why are ANY of them voting MAGA?

4
lemmy.zip

I mean... I don't generally consider my red hair to be the most important part of my personal identity. But if there were a political group who went out of their way to declare that red hair was a sign of demonic possession, I don't think I would align myself with that particular group no matter how many of their platform points I agreed with.

16

This. There are people that want gays dead, or at least back in the closet, and subjected to being imprisoned for having the audacity to have consensual non-hetero sex. And certainly they want gays not to have any idea of rights, like being able to marry who they love, FFS.

I don't think someone has to make it their primary identity, etc....but if a large group is specifically targeting you and wanting you to be treated as a second-class citizen (and in some examples, openly talking about having the government kill you), it needs to be taken seriously.

6

Christian nationalist pastor Doug Wilson calls for the return of anti-sodomy laws.

The problem was that people haven't been using Sodom and its fate as a proper guide to moral rectitude. What we need is a return to more-Biblical behavior in modern society.

Genesis 19:1–26

The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

Clearly not good.

Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

Much better. Pay attention to the moral priorities here; this is the proper way to act.

“Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

But Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please! Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”

He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.)

By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.

Pay attention. This is a proper application of justice on moral grounds.

But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

As is right and proper.

Genesis 19:30–38:

Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today. The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

Exactly.

I love that bit of "don't rape with the random people I just met; rape my virgin daughters instead". Nobody reading the plain language could come away thinking this is a good guide to morality. They either haven't read it, or they lack basic reading comprehension, or their morals are completely twisted.

10

The message of Sodom and Gomorrah is about hospitality.

It’s paralleled by a fucked up story later in Judges, where a man receives a visitor and similar is harangued by a crowd of people wanting to rape them. He instead offers up his concubine, who is raped to death. He mutilates her body and sends it all around Israel to shame them.

It ties to Bronze Age practices where raping men was a way to humiliate them. Probably common practice with defeated captives in war.

The point of both the story in Genesis and Judges here is that you must treat visitors with respect. Absolutely critical message in a pre modern society. That’s why Paris kidnapping Helen was such a big deal - you don’t spit in the eyes of your host like that. Hospitality is critical.

I think the problem is people basing their morality on religion in the first place tbh.

It's real easy to interpret it to mean almost anything so while religion is ones guide, you are more vulnerable to manipulation.

The hottest gay men are the "straight" ones. That's the forbidden. They don't want gays to seem straight and that's why they gay wash so much flamboyant gay stuff for LGBT marketing profits. The divide is on purpose, and it's not for the good of humanity.
