10 years old laptop - is it time to retire?

My dad has a laptop I used to use, which has been working well so far. Recently, he got frequent out-of-memory (RAM) issues - the computer freezes, forcing to restart. It is hard to diagnose, but it might be that 8GB RAM might be too small even for light workload these days.

So, I just checked when it is produced - 2015-10. So it is now 10 years old. While I am wary of producing e-wastes, maybe that was long enough life we got out of it. Perhaps it costs more in electricity than buying a replacement laptop? So, I want to ask - is it time to retire this laptop?

I did not expect some of them to be racists, but

This was posted in ![email protected], on an article about South Korea and Israel. I don't want to go back to the thread and look at the mess again..

Anyway, they said:

In that they insist they're the rightful rulers of a land they invaded and only gained international legitimacy after being backed by nuclear superpowers, much to the suffering of the actual native populations; while everyone ignores their fascist history and present and pretends they're a beacon of democracy in an otherwise savage land full of subhuman monkeys barely fit to be called slaves.

Besides the fact that the the divide is typical ideological division, not "invasion" of sort, I find the following part more egregious.

otherwise savage land full of subhuman monkeys

Isn't this just plain racism against us South Koreans? Where did they learn to dehumanize civilians like that?

Meh, it's my bad thinking there would not be racists in Lemmy.

Tomorrow is Monday, Ahhhhh

Why should Monday return every week? Weekends are so short, I want to rest and also do some meaningful things, but there are not enough time for all that.

Can anyone stop time in weekends, please?

I just ended up spending whole weekend sleeping and watching a few game videos, could not do anything productive. It sucks so much that I don't have energy and time to do anything I want..

I don't like how my life is: work, sleep, work, sleep, ad infinitum. Maybe that's all that's allowed for dumb and lazy me..

How many projects involve LLM-written code now?

Updated my actual-budget container today, and met with authentication failure - I am locked out of my budgets.

I turned to the github repo for troubleshoot, and.. Noticed that their commits are pretty much dominated by AI now.

At least they seem to be being up-front about their AI usage by tagging commits with the tag, but it still feels icky to me.

(As a 'bonus', their only support channel is on discord - but I guess that's the norm for many open-source projects.)

Is this fact of life now? Are most projects being written and managed by LLM nowadays? Not sure I can trust the projects nowadays.

Is there alternative budget app which does not involve LLM?

How to fix intense display tearing?

I have been getting monitor tearing time to time, even with windows. It wasn't occurring often, and I could fix it by turning the monitor off and on, so I have been sleeping on it.

A few days ago, it began tearing like crazy, and it happens after turning the monitor on for a few minutes. It came to the point where the computer is nearly unusable, so I want to solve the issue once and for all.

How do I go with resolving a monitor tearing issue? Or, is it the faulty monitor? The issue also happens on Windows, after all..

Tech (AI) stock price is not going down as fast as I hoped for..

https://sh.itjust.works/post/49182958

Soo.. I succumbed to my urge and shorted Nasdaq (was too scared to short Nvidia).

I wished it would go down in breakneck speed, but it has only whimpered so far. Still, it seems to be showing head-and-shoulders / double top pattern, and the pricing looks like it is trailing down.

Indeed, you never know until it truly bursts, though. I wonder what to do with my shorts.

I feel like the AI bubble has began bursting

This is only a subjective feeling and I do not have substantiated reasoning behind it, but it does feel like the bubble began bursting.

More and more people admitting that it is a bubble, even among the insiders and financial institutions.

We also got some infographic that AI companies are propping each other up. Not really indicative of anything, but it adds to the feeling.

Also idk, the pattern on the stock market looks like the top is in. Ironically, I am relying in this signal the most. Just wanted to post that.

I am getting offended on this kind of messages, am I overreacting?

I got this comment as a reply to my post:

You can get a job and do your math, too.
Other people do more with less, why can't you?
Answer:
::: spoiler spoiler
Greed and entitlement.
:::

I feel quite offended, that I have to care about someone else who "do more with less". What does it have to do with greed? I do not get the thought process behind it.

I wonder if I am overreacting. I would feel better if they just said to get a job, but it felt more like they are trying to make fun of me.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for thoughtful replies! Now I feel a lot better - I was in very bad mood when I got the reply above, so I felt even more attacked. Still, I should learn to not get overly offended like this.

Am I resistant to advertisements, or is it all mirage?

I saw a post about how nerds are resistant to advertising, which is bs imo considering how obsessed many nerds to products. But then, I do not seem to get affected - I usually do not desire to buy a product, and only seek out what to buy when needed.

That is, I feel like adverts do not work on me. Is this an illusion? Or maybe, is it that many adverts are made to appeal to neurotypicals?

Am I alone or is Severance 2 lackluster compared to its predecessor?

Just finished watching Severance 2, the Apple TV series about severance protocols. Although I liked the ending being left vague, the other parts felt rather lacking.

I can't give a specific examples, but it was like they were overly complicating the dialogue, which was presumably to appear meaningful and in depth. This also falls flat because it is so hard to follow, and whenever you follow, you realize it is shallower than expected. I could not find true deep meanings other than ice cold corporates stuff. Also, parts like switching to sudden outdoor scenes was so sudden and it seemed to rather harm the narrative.

Did I miss important details and symbolism to understand the show?

Is F-droid insecure?

In the GrapheneOS forum, I encountered a claim that F-droid is insecure (and not good at privacy as well). These links (and more) were given as an evidence:

While there are some attitude against FOSS app, I think the arguments are generally sound and in good-faith. Which makes me confused, as I've been hearing good words about F-droid in lemmyverse.

I am not good at assessing arguments, so I want to ask you guys for more aspects and information.

Also, if not F-droid, what should I use? Is Aurora store, a frontend of play store, not fine to use as well?

What phone should I buy for privacy?

My current phone is 7 years old, does not support recent android versions, and battery life is becoming atrocious. This feels like right time to change my phone.

Currently, I know of & am considering 3 options:

  • Google Pixel
  • iPhone
  • Samsung Galaxy

I heard that Pixel is the best choice for privacy, despite it being Google^TM. Should I go with it, and install Graphene OS or similar options? The very fact that the name "Google" is attached makes me nervous. Also, I don't think I can trust android, so I would have to install Graphene OS or the like. In the case, app support would be lacking, though.

I am considering iPhone as well, since it has "reputation" of being secure. Of course, Apple can access my data, but that might be a good enough compromise? Honestly, I don't know. It's the best supported option as well - lots of apps support iPhone.

Galaxy is just the one that I am the most familiar with (my current one is Galaxy S8). I don't trust it, though. Do they even make good hardware nowadays?

EDIT: Turns out, Pixel phones are poorly supported by local telecomm companies. It is relatively cheap though. Still worth it?

EDIT2: I heard that data & message is fine, but the call quality is impacted by lack of VoLTE compatibility.

Vaultwarden selfhosting, or bitwarden service?

I am looking into password managers, as number of my accounts are increasing. Currently I am weighing two options:

  • Host Vaultwarden on a VPS, or
  • Use the free bitwarden service.

I want to know how they are in practical aspects.

While I am fine self-hosting many services, password managers seem to be one of the most critical services that should not admit downtime. I surely cannot keep it up, as I need to update it time to time.

On the other hand, using bitwarden might require some level of trust. How much should I trust the company to use the free service? How do I know if my passwords would be safe, not being exposed to the wide net?

I want to gauge pros and cons, are there aspects I missed? How are your opinions on this? If you are self-hosting vaultwarden, how do you manage the downtime? Thanks in advance!

Ansible iptables best practices?

I am currently looking into ansibles to store my configurations and deploy services more easily.

I have couple of iptable rules in /etc/iptables/rules.v4, which I can easily restore. Meanwhile, ansible has iptable role for configurations - hence, I am confused on what approach to take.

How do I persist this rules, especially across reboots? Should I rerun ansible every time on each reboot? I am at loss on how to best manage iptables, as other services can interact with it. How do you folks handle this? Thanks in advance!

How and where should I keep backups of system configurations?

Sorry for adding to the massive pile of backup-related question, but I could not figure out how to manage backups from existing answers..

I want to backup my VPS setup (think container-defining files, its volumes, and etc configs), but am unsure where to put it. Does keeping these in the VPS itself make sense? If so, how do I create and manage the backup?

Also, I would need a remote copy - what is the good location for this? I wish I could copy to my laptop, but obviously I cannot do that automatically. Should I pay money for a backup? I want to avoid paying lots of money just for backups. Thanks in advance!
