Movies with deliberately anachronistic endings/scenes?

I was watching Donkey Skin (absolutely gorgeous costuming - the kind of thing we’ll probably never see again) and the ending involves a helicopter showing up out of nowhere. It’s kinda shocking, because the film is set in a sort of fantasy medieval Europe.

Another film that does this is Buñuel’s Simon of the Desert. ::: spoiler spoiler The Devil transports Simon to a modern day club at the end. :::

To use a movie that more people might recognize, Monty Python and the Holy Grail’s ending with everyone getting arrested by modern cops kinda does this, but the shock of the anachronism is lessened by the fact that there are modern day scenes sprinkled throughout the film.

Are there other films that do this? I mean less like The Village where the reveal is

::: spoiler spoiler they were always in the modern era. ::: But more surrealist films that use the sudden jump to the modern day to shock the audience.

Recommendations for newer martial arts movies

i was just thinking about martial arts movies I used to watch. Ones starring Jet Li or Jackie Chan spring to mind. With beautifully choreographed and visually impressive fight scenes. With the notable exception of the John Wick franchise, which I do throughly enjoy, I feel like you don't see much of that anymore. But maybe they do, and it's just not on my radar. And I'm thinking less gun fu more kung fu.

I did do a low effort search (skimmed an IMDB new martial arts movie list) and there's a few on there I hadn't heard of but looked like they might be the flavor I'm looking for. But I also thought to ask the lemmyverse.

I would prefer ones that don't use any CGI. In am cool with practical effects, even if a bit absurd. In English would be nice too (not dubbed), but I'm not adverse to subtitles.

RIP Brian Johnson, Sci-fi Visual Effects Master

Brian Johnson (June 29, 1939 - June 15, 2026) Wikipedia, was a phenomenal sci-fi visual effects artist who deserves recognition for his contributions to many of the greatest sci-fi films of the 20th century. Look up his credits on the film info aggregator of your choice and you will almost certainly see some of your favorites.

He worked on several Gerry Anderson productions like Supercar and Thunderbirds until he got poached by Stanley Kubrick to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was special effects supervisor on The Empire Strikes Back and Alien.

What is the strangest theater released movie you've watched all the way through?

Obviously there's lots of weird trash in the direct to VHS/DVD/streaming ecosystems, but when it comes to something that actually got a first run theater release, what is your strangest?

For me, it's Southland Tales. I actually kind of love this movie but it's difficult to recommend because people you recommend it to might not look at you the same afterwards. The cast is positively stacked with big names, the movie looks great, and there's a fantastic and really sad musical number half way through. This is the only movie that has truly captured the vibe of reading the biblical book of Revelation in that it's making you go "wait, what?" every five minutes as it spirals into either intensely meaningful imagery or schizophrenia manifest on 35mm.

Jessie Buckley is dug up to marry Christian Bale, while Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel are the double act of the year in Steven Soderbergh’s dark comedy. Here’s our round up of movie magic from the last six months in the UK

Big ol' list here, but a lot of interesting looking recommendations that completely passed me by

(SPOILERS) I may have just put together the best explaination of "The lighthouse"!?

So I recently decided to watch the movie and I loved it! Trying to make sense of it was as fun as watching it and here's basically what I was able to put together and evidence supporting my claims:

The world: My main idea is that the world of "The lighthouse" is actually sort of limbo where Thomas is being judged for his sins and only the final scene where Thomas was getting eaten by the seagulls was in "hell" or "purgatory"

Thomas wake: My theory is that Wake is actually three entities instead of one, first is the veteran sailor we see him as who is also a projection of thomas Howard who also serves as an entity trying to help Howard not lose his humanity, he burys Howard in work and alcohol so that he remains sane and does not lose his humanity which he evidently fails in as despite his best efforts to prevent Howard from "spilling the beans" Howard would eventually admit to killing his colleague and having no regrets about it. When Howard was burying wake alive he says "O what Protean forms swim up from men's minds, and melt in hot Promethean plunder, scorching eyes, with divine shames and horror... And casting them down to Davy Jones" I interpret it as wake damning Howard to hell and implying that Howard is infact prometheus or will share the same divine shames and horrors as him (more on that in a bit).

The sirens: My theory is that the siren Howard "hallucinated" about is also a form of proteus meant to bring out the sexual depravity in Howard since well..... he was being judged for everything he was.

Proteus himself: Proteus in greek mythology is the son of poseidon and is said to be the best at transformation among all the deities which would fit in perfectly with my theory as in the scene where Howard continuously punches a pinned down wake, wake transforms into all three of Proteus's avatars one by one.

Howard's fall and the eternal punishment: Despite wakes efforts Howard gradually starts losing his humanity and the killing of the one eyed seagull (which is a projection of Howard himself as he is missing an eye in the final scene of the movie as well) marked a point of no return and the act itself symbolized the brutal death of humanity in Howard and his fate had been decided as the island gets engulfed in a storm the very next day, Howard would feel the wrath of the sea. The final phase of the movie follows an injured Howard making his way to the top of the lighthouse approaching the light and what he believed to be salvation only to gain knowledge of his fate and the fact that he was cursed to suffer and pay for his crimes for eternity... and then he fell, rolling down the stairs straight into hell as he is then seen laying on the ground in pain as seagulls feast upon his liver just like how prometheus was cursed to have his liver eaten by an eagle for the rest of eternity... Howard too will go through this fate over and over again as wake had confessed to him earlier about the previous Vickie who went mad and felt sirens calling out to him and the one who thought there was salvation in the light at the top of the lighthouse when it was Howard wake was actually talking about as he had been through the exact same ordeal over and over and over again.......
