When you get into electrochemistry, the answer becomes complicated. Positively charged molecules move too, and in semiconductors there's such thing as a 'hole' - an absence of electron in a densely packed electron field - which carries charge as if it were a real particle.

relay with power monitor?

Buy an ACS 712 ammeter, the integrated board should not cost more than $3, and you don't need any special high voltage isolation, it comes with 10 A terminals. You'll get a decently accurate current reading, multiply by your socket voltage to get power in watts (120 or 220, which is actually 240 volts nowadays, you should know), but you need to read it like 300-400 times per second for AC. Just beware that even though manufacturer says the chip itself is rated for 30 A, your terminals will become melted plastic at around 15 A, and you won't even fit the wires rated for more than 15 A into them.

Why are there so many graybeards in FOSS?

It's ultimately a question of money. Older guys with software engineering degrees and fancy salaries can spend their weekends doing free community service in the form of open-source development. Younger people have to worry about job and rent and bills, they simply don't have that kind of free time.

Add to that the growing complexity of the software. Something that could be done by an university student before, like writing an OS from scratch, won't be nearly as useful as it would in the '90-s, because it was already done before, now you have multiple OSes to choose from. And joining an existing software project is hit-or-miss, some are inclusive and some are an old boy club where you need to know the secret rules.
