Well they've gotta spend the episode's animation budget on something lol
I reached episode 17. Just finished it. Oh my god. Elymias enters the boss lady's room at 14:25 and by the end of the episode at 21:39 he spoke all of one line. He spends 7 minutes standing in front of the guildmaster thinking to himself in his head. She even comes out and asks him "didn't you come here to give me a report?" like the studio animating this were self-aware of how comedically bad and janky this scene was.
They are obviously wasting their viewer's time on purpose.
Last episode, Elymas just stood around wasting time for no reason until he was almost killed by the dream lord.
This episode, Elymas just stood around wasting time for no reason while talking to the guild master.
Next week, I'm guessing Elymas will just stand around wasting time for no reason while talking to a blacksmith. In many normal anime, blacksmiths are pretty tight lipped already, so I anticipate the entire episode will be either a close up of Elymas's face or the blacksmith's face, with a shitty Elymas voice over rattling on the whole time about a bunch of stupid shit.
You know, in other anime that have these insufferable slow parts, they pretend like the slow parts happen instantly, like in between punches. In this anime, they make it clear that time is just passing, and Elymas is just standing there looking like a stupid asshole. The dream lord's stun wore off while he was wasting time in the last episode, and in this episode, the guild master even comments about how he's deep in thought.
THERE'S NOTHING TO THINK ABOUT YOU DUMB SHIT. JUST MAKE YOUR DUMB SHIT REPORT AND LEAVE.
Oh, Elymas, you're hesitant to report to the guild master because she might have set up the evolution thing? It's stupider to lie to her about it. You've already given the magic stones to the front desk. They can probably tell it evolved just from that. But it's even stupider to just stand there and say nothing. If you're worried about her reading your mind, then report and get out as quickly as possible. How stupid are you to think somebody is reading your mind but you stick around to think about all sorts of private things?
Also, in other anime, the MC makes a consequential report to the front desk, and they freak out, and before the MC can leave, they say, "The guild master wants to speak to you." What's up with refusing to tell anybody and then saying you have to talk to the guild master? Why can't you make your report to the front desk?
I wonder if this studio is getting paid to be the testing ground for new techniques.
Their reputation is in the perfect spot to make an anime to demo the risky tech no one else will touch.
The aerial fly-in shot of the city was pretty impressive; I bet we see stuff like that adopted by other studios in the next couple of years.
You think so? I thought it looked like an Unreal Engine 4 tech demo.
Actually, my first thought on seeing that shot was, "Reminds me of the first ep. of Lord of Mysteries." So the technique itself isn't that innovative, although applying it to a show intended for the Japanese domestic market might be, since Lord of Mysteries is a donghua.
I've been watching this and I like the story but I absolutely loathe and hate the disgusting amount of recap. Each episode starts with at least 3 minutes worth of recap - one of them didn't actually start the episode until 9 minutes and 30 seconds in! And then it has recap mid-episode for no apparent reason, it's like they're adding recap to commercial breaks. Then the ending song rolls minutes before the end of the episode and there is post-ending recap.
25 minute episodes somehow turn into only 10 to 12 minutes of actual story. It's insane. I enjoy the story but it's one of the worst anime this season and I'm going to badmouth it and recommend that people skip it because it's trash. It's absolute trash anime because of the insane amount of recap.
There is nothing worse in anime than recap and the studio behind this anime is absolute trash level talent and they should all be fired. The studio should go bankrupt and not exist anymore.
What a weird conversation.
What a craptastic episode where absolutely nothing happened.
They left the dungeon and went to the guild.
That's it.
In the manga, this entire sequence is all of two chapters. 28 pages. And Ruche only spent two panels freaking out over the dagger instead of half the episode.
They move the story along in tiny increments by turning each episode into more than 50% recap.
GoHands is the studio making this and I have come to absolutely hate and detest them. Worst anime studio in Japan. I've never hated an anime studio before. But I hate GoHands.
The thing I don't understand is why? Why bother having few very well animated scenes and then all of this? It makes no sense, I don't get it.
Fantastic episode with a great deal of world building in which we find out that Elm’s house really do amount to a small fish in the grand scheme of things. This is another episode involving a high level negotiation, but the problem for Elm is trying to figure out if the guild master is a friend or foe before he shows too much of his hand.
I suppose if we try to consider the situation from the guild master’s viewpoint, she doesn’t know these adventurers and intelligence on them will amount to almost nothing. She isn’t sure what they want and knowing what they actually want is when the real negotiations can begin.
The most natural resolution is probably having these two adventurers perform some sort of service that achieves two different goals: Elm and Ruche will provide intelligence on their capabilities and prove their trustworthiness.
Or they come to an impasse and no one gets anything. That is a valid outcome if they can’t agree on anything.
I suppose while I find this interesting to consider, many people will not and that’s perfectly fine! This is just my opinion!
