Never thought of this but it is a concerning scenario. People really will offload any thinking they can

Those who are old enough, do you miss these days?
I was lucky in the early 90s in that my dad had a PC for work. A 14.4 modem and random BBS's to dial up to, and I got an interesting first experience with computers. Our local library had UNIX PCs, so I had to learn random protocols like telnet and gopher to access anything. Once I got to middle school we had labs like this. I definitely miss the LAN café feel of that era.

I long for the days of random people running a BBS and no centralized social media

Europe braces for prolonged heatwave as temperatures approach 40C
It will only get worse as time goes on. The heat we are seeing now has a lag time on the order of decades. So give it another 20 years and it will only get hotter.

It's so bright it hurts...
Not being on time to a planned event. I want to be slightly early/on time. For reasons unbeknownst to me, when I say "we need to leave at 35 after to get there on time", the people I'm going with aren't ready until 50 after. Drives me absolutely bonkers.

Mega Thread - Donald Trump Pleads Not Guilty to Conspiring to Defraud the United States in Arraignment - Washington DC
No one should be above the law. Especially public officials such as the President. We should not set precedent to allow someone to get away with what he has done.
I would say the same about Clinton, Obama, or Biden, had they done the same. This is not about party politics or team sports.

That part was one of the biggest revelations to me. I had no idea Arizona had a for-profit jail system that is essentially pseudo-slavery.

Update from Lemmy after the Reddit blackout (From the Lemmy Developer)
I'm pledging $5/month each to mastodon.world and the lemmy devs. I recently quit drinking, so this is a drop in the bucket compared to what I used to spend monthly on alcohol.

For the second time in recorded history, global sea surface temperatures hit six standard deviations above 1982-2011, on January 6 2024
I know this isn't politics or nation state news, but it is deeply troubling for all of us who live on planet Earth. Six standard deviations is mind boggling.
Mods, please remove this if you feel it isn't news worthy. I know it breaks rule 1, but wanted to share.
