Voyager is great, +1 for those who haven't tried it. Works great with my self hosted instance.

18

Same, I really don't even use all the features it has already.

2

The notification doesn't say development is ending, just that the app will stop working on phones ruining Google's rootkit

49
midwest.social

That's fair, but it's asking a little much of users to start direct dowloading apks or whatever to get their leftist shitposting app and if I wanted to try that hard for anything but an adblocker it wouldn't be an Android in the first place.

OK you're allowed to just not do that.

The rest of us who are willing to put some effort in will likely not notice your absence.

18

I'd be willing to bet at least 50% of respondents in this thread use FDroid and/or Obtainium, and will continue to use side loading.

you don't need to be manually downloading apks. get a proper app store, like f-droid, and install jerboa that way.

I don't get it though. uploading apps to the play store has already required devs to prove their identity for quite a long time.

The difference is, they want to remove side loading.

That means all apps need to go through play store. No more f-droid on certified android devices. You need to be on play store, or your app is not installable.

1

You can still use FDroid and Obtainium, you just have to enable side loading manually.

1

I mean, if you're serious about ideology, you probably won't mind taking a few extra steps for it. If the status quo pisses you off, why not do something that's ultimately still free and only takes a little more time?

13

Nah, the google monopolists can fuck off right into their own dumpster fire shitholes. I won't use any app that requires their privacy infringements. Freedom is the only way.

Well, more like it was stabbed by Google and is bleeding out, but I suppose America and the EU could always decide to do the right thing instead.

lemmy.world

Sad, jerboa was my first experience with lemmy, but soon after switched to Voyager

24

Jerboa was my first lemmy app, which had it's quirks I think. Then I switched to Infinity, and finally Voyager. Voyager is the best app I've used.

5
lemmy.ml

Github page of jerboa says nothing about this

22

Jerboa the app had a pop-up not too long ago basically saying the end was near.

14

You mean that Google is restricting sideloading?

That has nothing to do with the Development of Jerboa. They can just as much develop an app according to Androids standard as they could before. The only change is that phones running googles rootkit won't be able to install it.

23
InFerNoreply
lemmy.ml

I use it daily and haven't seen a popup

6
kintherreply

I still use jerboa. Got the pop-up a few times. I will keep using it until the bitter end

7

Ditto. Imo it's the most similar to RIF out of all the Lemmy apps, and just like RIF, I'll use it until it stops working entirely

4

What kinda phone do you have? Other comments suggest it's for Google rootkit, and so I wonder if the message went out to folks who aren't using an Android phone.

I am also so far from a developer so I have no idea.

2
midwest.social

Where are you getting that jerboa is ending support? There's nothing of the sort on github or on /c/jerboa. I've no doubt they're not gonna register a google developer account, but that"s really got nothing to do with development of the app.

25
midwest.social

Another user posted an image of it if you're curious to see what you probably just clicked through.

5

No, I saw that one. It says nothing about jerboa ending support, just that you won't be able to run it on "certified" devices. I.E. I'll have to go through the "allow uncertified apps" nonsense, and install it from somewhere other than Google Play. Presumably it's available on F-Droid.

4
feddit.org

No. You can pull Jerboa from my dead hands.

I tried boost out, when it was relatively New and it was so completely bugged out, that it wasnt usuable at all. Voyager is working, but I absolutely dislike the UI. It is way too cluttered for my personal taste.

Jerboa is just perfect IMO. It may be minimalistic, but I Mike it that way.

2

I was mostly using Jerboa for a long time, but I've somewhat recently switched to Boost as I was tired of Jerboa breaking reasonably often. I've found I like Boost better.

2
szmer.info

I've been using Boost for r*ddit years ago and I'm still using Boost for Lemmy today. Shit's too good.

21
lemmy.zip

I like Boost because it seems to work really well in low connectivity areas.

4
lemmy.zip

This is the first I'm hearing of this, I'm gonna need some sources.

3

That isn't so much "Boost is spyware" as it is "ads are spyware". Boost is either paid or supported by ads, either can be enough reason to not use the app, but it doesn't make the app itself spyware.

3

Personally I just think it looks a lot better, and I prefer the infinite scroll. There are some things the browser version does better, like accessing the modlogs and such. I guess, metaphorically, those are your clothes "sorting piles" on the floor.

6
lemmy.world

For ppl who use the browser and do not like apps, try your instances ui sub domains (if they have any), on Lemmy world do we have multiple, the one I like is https://photon.lemmy.world/

otherwise: I am using the app Voyager if reading on my phone which has been good to me but it is pretty much a wrapped PWA app

10

I would use phtn.app because it lets you log into any instance, and it's also up-to-date. The lemmy.world version is over a year old

4

I have Connect, and Voyager as a backup. I prefer Connect. It sounds like a few people here dig Summit; is it better than Connect, and if so, how?

12

I've tried almost all of them, Connect had the nicer feel and I was able to customize it similar to BaconReader. The dev is quick to respond and push fixes too.

FlordaManreply

Jerboa is a lemmy client. “Browser users” are people who use lemmy trough a browser.

25
lemmy.world

Right. I'll be a browser user till the end then. I have no need for apps that will use extra storage on my device without offering a significantly better experience.

3

I don’t know if that’s an iphone thing, but for me browser versions are almost always inferior to apps (less smooth, more prone to random bursts of laggy behavior, longer startup). So I just use voyager.

4
lemmus.org

Damn, I'm still going to use it until it stops working completely, but whats the next best alternative?

14
hakasereply
lemmy.zip

I've been using Summit for the past six months or so and have enjoyed it.

7

I think I tried Thunder, raccoon, Jerboa, voyager and one or two others. I liked racoon but was having issues with it. once I changed to Interstellar there was a small learning curve to get used to, but I really like it now. summit and connect have been mentioned, as has boost. But thinking about it, if I'm happy with interstellar, I may as well stay with it.

1

went from Interstellar to Summit (posting from it now). I also use Boost

Summit is good.

It is listed (assuming it's the same eternity) - Says it is abandoned (or submit correction) The site itself is good for grouping all of the apps in one place, but it is not in any way accurate for it's stats, or probably it's info.

2

Oh then it was just filtered out from the view

It might be abandoned actually, haven't gotten an update in ages. But it works fine so idk

There are a few of us!!
Best UI by far imho (and a few smol features that benefit my daily use others don't offer or requires more clicks).

We didn't get the normal installing ("side-loading" & displeasing the oligarchy) pop-up but it still affects us.
