My sober partner got absolutely smashed while out with friends. They're going to have to sleep it off in their car, I'm not sure how to navigate (more in body)

Alcoholism is an addiction and an illness, but that doesn't absolve him from responsibility. If he becomes a bad person when drinking, especially if he's violent towards you, then you absolutely have a right to expect him to stay sober or deal with whatever you decide to do to stay safe from him. I'm not saying you have to leave him or whatever, that's not for me to decide, but you absolutely do not have to put up with this, just because he's an addict. Even addicts have agency and the ability to make the right choices. It's just harder for them. But how hard something is doesn't really matter when it comes to being a good person.

Source: I know addiction (wasn't violent though).

What was your most profound psychedelic experience?

I've done a lot of psychedelics in my life. Mainly LSD (including stupid doses), but also plenty of DMT, shrooms a few times and various research chemicals... It seemed like a big deal at the time, but in retrospect there wasn't really anything profound about it.

Psychedelics are great fun and I don't doubt they have great potential as medicine, but in my opinion most of the expectations people have when they take them expecting some kind of life changing spiritual experience is just hippie nonsense.

Ain't that the truth

I paid for movers my last two moves. It was expensive, but if you can afford it, it's totally worth it in my opinion. Instead of the move taking a whole weekend it was done in half a day both times.

And it's true: nobody wants to help with that shit. My friends offered, but the relief on their faces when I told them there was no need, was clearly visible.

This is Why Cycling is Dangerous in America

As a middle aged man in lycra who enjoys riding road bikes fast for sport and is comfortable riding in traffic: That Forester guy sounds like a dick. One of the things that makes bikes so cool is that they come in all kinds of different shapes and sizes, optimised for different use cases. Road bikes are cool, but so are mountain bikes, cargo bikes, fixed gear bikes, dutch style upright bikes, etc. And even if countless near death experiences while cycling around cars have made me feel comfortable (or complacent?) riding in traffic, I still appreciate good cycling infrastructure. People deserve to be safe and every trip taken by bike instead of by car is a win.

How is it that Germany and Japan can maintain good urban planning despite being home to some of the largest car companies?

As others have said, Germany is not as bad as the US (at least as far as I can tell looking at the US from the outside), but it's still fucking terrible and will likely get worse under future governments, which are all but guaranteed to be right-wing, quite possibly including the outright fascists of the AfD.

Public transport is useless, especially the train network, which is horribly outdated technically and has been gutted by quasi-privatisation. Trains are frequently late or cancelled (which counts as on time for German Rail's statistics). If you don't live in a city you basically have to own a car because of this, especially in smaller towns where there might only be like two busses a day (or none at all). There are some small improvements being made in cities, but they are hugely lacking and slow. They will also likely not survive future governments, which are promising car-centric policies and trying to import the anti-cyclist culture war from the US.

So yeah, it's bleak and the future looks even bleaker. With how things are going politically at the moment urbanism will be the least of our worries though.

UK moves to ban smoking for everyone born after 2008

I honestly don't think this will lead to a massive black market like some people seem to think. I don't see big profit margins that would make cigarettes an attractive thing to sell illegally. You can only make them so expensive if you can just find someone older to buy them for you for the normal price.

Besides, smoking is pretty shit really. There aren't going to be loads of people willing to go through the hassle of getting cigarettes illegally when all they do is stink and give you cancer. Especially when the people who can't buy them will mostly be people who haven't had a chance to get addicted yet.

I think this will work and be a net positive in the long run.

Microsoft is intentionally bricking all Office for Mac 2019/2021 installations

Yay, that'll be a fun day at work... I'm in charge of administering our fleet of Macs and all the users use MS Office heavily. We are currently not allowed to provide access to Office 365 for data protection reasons, so if they brick the volume license we are currently using I won't have a viable solution for them, beyond switching to OWA/Apple Mail and some other office suite.

The writing's been on the wall for a while though. They recently made it so that you can't hide the Office 365 nag screen while using a volume license, which confuses users into thinking they don't have a license. I fucking hate Microslop.

Edit: As far as I can tell this will only affect users using a 2019 volume license (which is already not compatible with current versions), but the 2021 license will continue to work? (Source: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/update-microsoft-365-or-office-on-your-macos-or-ios-device-f418ae5d-bb5f-4078-b3d9-9340f5dd084e ). I'd definitely be interested if anyone has more information. In any case, I'm sure it's just a matter of time until they fuck everyone not using a subscription based license for any of their products.

Edit 2: Nevermind. 13th October is the day Microslop has chosen to fuck me: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/system-requirements/end-of-support-for-office-2021

*Permanently Deleted*

You clearly find it easy to stop doing things that are bad for you (drinking, drugs, eating meat), but you struggle to start doing things that are good for you (exercise, cooking, eating enough/well).

She was right. I still don't do the bad stuff and started doing the good stuff and now my life is so much better. Ironically it was quitting the last bad thing (weed) which allowed me to start taking care of myself. It's not enough to not hurt yourself, you have to be good to yourself too.
