What are some events in recorded history that are extremely hard to believe, but without a doubt actually happened?

Shackleton's journey by open lifeboat from Elephant Island to South Georgia was in itself pretty astonishing. Captain Frank Worsley navigated using iirc a couple of pencils and a rubber band, and only caught a few glimpses of the sun to help his calculations. They landed on the wrong side of the island and had to climb a mountain pass to get to the whaling station. At the top of the pass they decided, what the hell, and slid down on their backsides. This didn't kill them, phew, but it did shred their trousers, so at the bottom they carefully safety-pinned the bits together, "in case there are ladies".

making my work look beautiful

The plumber who did work in my kitchen made a fantastic job of the under-sink pipework. Everything curved and lined up just so, little screw valves instead of clunky taps, it's lovely. It's hidden away behind cleaning products, but I know it's there and it makes me smile. Thank you to tradespeople who enjoy their work!

The Global Hypocrisy of Rescuing the Titan

Novelty is key here. Novelty + Titanic + billionaires + hubris equals an unbeatable level of novelty in any news cycle. Tragically, immigrants drowning is no longer novel. Speaking of novel, I highly recommend The Beekeeper of Aleppo for anyone wanting an insight into why people cram onto these little boats and set sail. Warning: it is harrowing. Also, a shoutout to the RNLI, whose volunteers carry on saving lives at sea in the face of criticism. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65893789

Is there any one else who feels like their life has been disrupted by this whole debacle with Reddit.

I've just realised that I haven't viewed a single tiktok video since leaving reddit. So I guess I haven't missed them. I never posted anything on reddit, I mostly lurked - as a passive consumer of other people's content. That's the biggest difference I guess. Here I have several different logins on various servers, and I've posted a few times in niche communities. It feels like a mini adventure!

Can we have one day without talking about poop?

I'm part of a health study in the UK that recently did a poo study as well. I didn't take part, but this week we got the results. So now I know what areas of the country have the most and least frequent pooing. There are also stats on constipation and diarrhea, and length of time sitting on the toilet. I'm happy to copy and paste if anyone is interested.... though given the post title, maybe I'll keep it to myself, lol.
