If you were an NPC in a game and only had one line of dialogue, what would it be?
I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!

even arguing about rank could have been interesting. you're x bajillion lightyears from home, can a rank structure that was part but now cut off from a massive organization survive? should it? does the military answer to the government staff aboard in leau of an elected commander in chief, or is the military in total control because the situation warrante it? or just because they have the guns? where do the civilians fit into that? there are so many interesting angles to explore, they just... didn't

What do we think of "MacGyver"?
i agree with everyone calling him a role model. it always struck me as incredible that such a aggressively non-toxic masculine hero managed to be popular in the 80s the world would be a much better place if there were more macguyver-styled heroes on our screens

Japan tried to build an operating system for the entire world, then the US government intervened
Interesting how many TRON Association members were also adoptees of the MSX standard, which had similar (but less ambitious) goals to be "the" world computer interoperability standard. i wonder if that was why they jumped off the project at the first sign of trouble, thinking it was a good thing they didn't keep all of their eggs in one basket. NEC likely ended up outperforming them both with the PC-98 anyway

You just got pulled over by the police for speeding on the highway (50+, stunt driving), what song was blaring in your car?

if TANK! is playing you're not pulling over, you're making a daring escape that likely involves multiple jumps and driving down at least one staircase

Oh... shit. Oops
something very similar in mainframe land where they call files "datasets." if you call a dataset a file, get ready to get an earfull!
which is ironic considering IBM themselves often call them files and one of the most popular dataset utilities is called FileAid. but if we acknowledge that, we lose a valuable opportunity to belittle and exclude newcomers

The live-action "Legend of Zelda" film will feature Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link
very promising sign that they're casting for the roles instead of casting for recognizable names. i am cautiously optimistic

Loops by Pixelfed • Public beta (hopefully) launching in 10 hours
i'm really interested to see where this goes. i feel like a lot of the dorks (i say affectionately as a dork) who use the fediverse and people who do this kinda shortform video are two circles that don't touch, so this could very well die on the vine- no pun intended- or it could give the fedi the jolt it needs to enter the mainstream

it's hard to tell the two apart these days because many cars have regular headlights that are as bright as normal high beams. there have been a few times i've been mad at someone behind me with their high beams on, and then they flash their actual high beams because they're mad at me for not also speeding while blind
god, driving at night used to be so fun, now it's ruined

is Lemmy the most popular 'Reddit Alternative'?
i have nothing but anecdotal evidence to go off of but just today i saw a lemmy post used as a source in a news article, which i can't say i've ever seen of any other "link aggregator" aside from reddit. so it's certainly up there!
and like others said, the activitypub interoperability certainly helps. i'm an mbin user but i'd wager more than half of my subscribed "magazines" are actually lemmy communities

Game Boy clone maker Anbernic suspends all shipments to US
calling these "game boy clones" isn't quite right because they don't take physical cartridges, but this is a real shame. companies like them and Miyoo and Retroid have been carving out a nice niche of gaming devices between a fully locked down console and a Whole Ass Personal Computer but this tariff situation is gonna kill them in their tracks stateside
