yoooo, a celebrity on the fediverse? let's goooooo
Whoa, Lemmy is going places! I never expected to see a Reddit-style AMA to appear here. I don't have any questions for you, Mr. Karim but I do wish you the best!
Right? This makes me stupid happy to see.
Yeah, I feel like I'm just spamming upvotes on everyone because I'm just so jazzed to see this.
I upvote everything here to encourage activity.
I also comment useless shit just to add activity.
This place is pretty much like Field of Dreams rn; people come, you just gotta build it first.
thank you!
I don't even watch Star Trek or know who this actor is, and I'm excited too! I wish I had a question!
hahaha well thanks for stopping by!
Is this the thread for questions?
What actor from Trek’s past, that primarily wore lots of makeup and prosthetics, do you look up at as a acting role model?
This is the thread for questions!
Doug Jones!!
Action Saru!
Oh my gosh! Welcome to the Fediverse!
We're kind of obsessed with Star Trek here.
Um...I don't have a question. It's just so cool to see you here. And since Academy is relatively new, I should add welcome to the Trek fandom!
I hope our appreciation for your art shines through!
this is very kind thank you!
Yep this guy just got me to watch. God damnit.
welll heyyy!!! hope you enjoy!!
Yeah... I'll be watching it now. Edit: Genuinely enjoyed the first episode. Only minor science-based or engineering-based gripes, which I will hold my tongue on. I have put up with MUCH worse! :D
I was always planning on eventually watching, but now I'm putting it on today.
lets go!!!
Qapla! Been watching it on and off all day. Love that freaking low octave. Should be caught up in a couple of hours.
Sorry I'm late guys, i'm locked in now! About to go crazy responding to all these questions lol
I just want to tell you how much I liked the episode that explored Klingon honor and how that hunting scene kept being recontextualized.
The show reminds me of Lower Decks in that it's different but it's the same. Cant wait to see more.
Happy to have you here \(>ᗜ<)/
To be clear, this is for 4pm EST
30 more minutes! God I'm excited!
+24 hours. But you can still be excited!
Oh well. Guess I gotta be patient. Thanks for the heads up!
We wanted to make sure there was lots of time to accumulate questions, but the Fediverse is unsurprisingly rising to the occasion.
This sparks joy in me!
The responses are all live in the thread! Or you can check out the u/karim account to see them all in chronological order (but without the questions, which is...challenging).
aww well this is kind, haha thank you for your enthusiasm!! i really appreciate it
Omg he responded to me twice! ☺️
This is incredible, my respect and gratitude to those that are making it happen. Also can't wait.
Is that the UTC-0500 one?
I wish more people would use that format. It's much easier to relate to your own time zone.
Depends… I grew up with TV stations advertising shows in Eastern/Pacific time zones while I lived in neither.
I’ve also driven to both of those time zones and can picture how many time zones away they are in my head.
Either one of those is easier for me.
There's an entire world of timezones that aren't the US.
It's easier for you to remember your timezone in +- utc than making everyone else on the planet look up whatever the fuck est is every time we need to.
Well I don’t live in the US, so yeah I know. Anyway, my point is that “easier” is subjective and very much based on a person’s experience.
I’ve looked up UTC compared to my time many times and it just doesn’t stick. I don’t know what the current UTC time is but I could tell you what time it is in Newfoundland no problem. 🤷♂️
lmao thanks for the reminder that there are four timezones which could be called "EST" 😭
(but UTC-5 is the only one properly called that)
Over a million upvotes on this post!
Incredible engagement all.
Certainly an instance record but is that a Lemmy record? Are many of those upvotes coming via other APIs or is it just Lemmy’s
I have no idea where you're seeing a million, I'm seeing 1,300. But that's still very high for the fediverse! And it's definitely the highest we've ever had in one of our local communities.
LOL — saw k, thought thousand, wrote million
What I get for posting after an IM, screen heavy workday.
Yes, a thousand is huge, even if an order of magnitude lower. 🖖🏼
Might as well had been a million, I don't think it could have gone better! ❤️
First, I just wanted to say that you’re a treat to watch on Academy and I can’t wait to see where your story goes! It’s always great to see a species fleshed out in Trek, in this case a Klingon that has other pursuits than that of a warrior.
Were you initially intimidated by the fact that you are playing a character that is part of a species that has decades of culture built up to this point? If so, how did you prepare for the role? If not, I can’t tell because you’ve been great so far.
Wildly unexpected. Thank you for doing this! 💜
I'm a huge Star Trek as well as lover of Birds. imagine my surprise to see a Klingon carrying binos and then saying, "I watch birds." My family started laughing because I wear a t-shirt often that simply says, "I like birds" and they were really really hoping that you would say that. Haha. Close enough!
I have a very serious two part question:
🐦 🖖🏽
Where you a Trekkie before you got the role? If so, what's your favorite show/movie?
Hello Karim! How does it feel to be the first (or at least one of the first) celebrities to do an AMA on Lemmy?
looooool! It's an honor!! 🖖
It's an honor to have you.
First, I admire you for the heart, depth, and character you bring to this role. My question relates to Klingon culture and in-universe development. Star Trek has a rich history of having "flagship characters" for the important cultures (You, Worf, and B'ellana for the Klingons, Spock, Tuvok, and T'Pol for the Vulcans, Deanna and Lwaxana Troi for Betazed, etc.)
What has been the hardest part about redefining Klingon culture post burn? and what defining in-universe moment changed the Klingons the most in the last ~1000 years?
Qapla'! (Also thank you! but Klingon doesn't have a word for that...)
T'Pol and Tuvok would be crying in a corner now, if they allowed themselves to feel feelings.
Oh man, you are right!
would you rather fight 100 tribble-sized sehlats or one sehlat-sized tribble?
The trouble with (sehlat sized) tribbles is that won't remain 1 sehlat sized for tribble for long!
Hey Karim, super cool to have you here. I love what you've done with your character so far and I'm hoping for continued success on SFA.
energy on set is VERY playful. like a real school. jokes, pranks, a lot of fun. Honestly, every single cadet has a funny sense of humor, its like ping pong with the laughs. Kerrice is DEFINITELY the most responsible for making everyone crack up tho
i LOVE sci fi. I think predator badlands that just came out was one of the my favorite movies from the previous year. underrated in my opinion??
Do the prosthetics make it much more difficult to act in, or does it actually help you get into the role?
Hi Karim, no question I just wanted to say that your performance in episode 4 honestly made it some of the best Star Trek I've ever seen.
First of all I agree, but also on that note- we have actually been in touch with the writer for that episode (Eric Anthony Glover) about a possible AMA in the future as well. But first we want to see how this one goes!
Oh shit, you guys are absolutely awesome!!
oh wow, what a kind compliment thank you
What’s the Klingon food like on-set, for scenes where you have to actually eat it? Do they try and make it taste good, or is it as gross as it looks?
Weirdly, I just thought about how odd it seemed that the fediverse didn't have an AMA community and boom, inside 24-hours, here's this post! Very rad seeing this and now I'll have to add another show to my watch list!
Seriously, even if you don't see or answer these questions, it's super cool you're doing this and I'm glad one of the first on the platform is for Star Trek!
my first time on the fediverse but i love it here! might not be the last you see of me here.
Would it be too intrusive to ask what exactly brought you here? Was it just "Oh a cool Trek community"? I wouldn't expect a wider public to know what a fediverse is.

In case you missed it.
this is confusing...
Sorry, I'm not sure how useable these links are in different Lemmy clients.
Here's the quote from the other answer:
Appreciated. Thunder reditrected me just fine. I was just expecting the comment itself to appear inline...
So cool to have you on fedi, thanks for doing this. Here is a very cool video about the fediverse, if you're at all curious.
Awesome to hear and welcome! Thank you for being here and answering all the questions!
Is this Lemmy's first celebrity AMA?
i feel it may be
Hi Karim! really loving SFA, and Jay-Den is definitely an awesome character, the Trek world needs more Klingon scientists!!
Jay-Den's voice is really great 🔥 fit for a warrior.
What's your favorite Klingon phrase?!
thank you!
a warrior does not let a friend face danger alone.
Hi Karim! It's so cool that you're doing an AMA on the Fediverse!
Anyway, Jay-den is one of my favorite characters of the post-2017 era of Trek. Jay-den is clearly not like most Klingons, but he still feels like a true Klingon. How did you prepare for the role in taking such a unique character who doesn't fit the "stereotype" (for lack of a better word) of a Klingon while still making him feel like a "real" Klingon to the audience?
It's really refreshing to see a gay relationship happen organically on screen in a context outside of the contemporary stereotypes - and indeed, outside of human culture altogether. I realize Trek has done this a bit in the past with Culber/Stamets, and Reno - have you had to think about how LGBT culture exists in a multi-planetary society in the 4th millennium? Is it just plainly a utopia to strive for, for everyone? Is Jay Den's family's Triad House a non-issue in Klingon Society post Qu'onos, or was that something that happened out of necessity to preserve Klingon culture?
in the future literally no one cares who and how you love. like whether you love a guy, girl, nonbinary, or trans person, or if you're in a monogamous, or polyamorous relationship... its not a big deal like it is now in the 21st century. in the future, As long as you are being true to yourself and you're not harming yourself or others, literally no one cares lol. It just is. that's why i love on the show its just presented naturally, there's no big moment about it, it just exists and that's it. a triad house is completely a non-issue and no one even bats an eyelash at it.
Don't misunderstand me, I'm incredibly excited that you're doing this AMA on the 'verse, but I'm curious why you chose this over reddit?
also: Are you going to play the voyager game that was released today?
why not? What are you trying to say about the 'verse?! are you not worthy?! I think this community is cool af!
As for the game, with my shooting schedule i have zero time for games, but i might in the future
Maybe they don't want ICE to know their location :P
Hi, Karim!
I cannot believe nobody else is asking this question, so here it goes:
What is your favorite dinosaur? 🦕
Triceratops
Acceptable. o7
More than acceptable. To put it this way: Rhinos are objectively cool; You know what would make them cooler? Bigger and more pointy bits.
^Asking the important questions here!
Hi Karim! I really liking Starfleet Academy, especially the set designs. What's your favorite set in the show?
thank you! its so hard to choose they are all so beautiful! Maybe the atrium? It just feels so large and cool when hundreds of aliens are walking around, really feels like i'm in school in outer space
That's my favorite too!
Hi Karim, big fan of your work in Academy! Jay-Den's backstory is already an all time great Trek episode.
My hard hitting question is personal: Coffee or tea? More generally, favorite drink?
tea please! hibiscus non caffeinated with honey and lemon. but my favorite drink is organic coconut water
Vita coco extra coconut is my jam
or Raktajino!
How do you and your co-stars stay entertained during downtime on set?
we are SO playful on set. play soccer in the green room. board games. read books. on our phones/computers. but mostly we just talk to each other, laugh, and have fun.
What board games? Ethan Peck is huge into MTG. If you ever get to meet him.
Welcome to a deeply weird community!
If you were going to spend a day as a member of a Star Trek crew (other than your current show), which would you choose, and why? Assume it's going to be a normal and pleasant day, not one of the exceptionally horrifying days where everyone gets space parasites or some such.
lower decks crew on U.S.S. Cerritos are DEFINITELY my people
💜💜💜
Banana, hot.
Banana, hot.
Banana, hot.
Hey! Trills have a great time having space parasites!
Well now we've got at least two Star Trek stars on the fediverse! @[email protected]
Jeri Ryan made a Mastodon account during the great Twitter migration but sadly doesn't seem to be using it much these days.
Bluesky seems to be the platform more popular with that people associated with Trek.
Unfortunately nobody learned a single lesson and went straight back to privately owned, corporate social media.
It’s odd, because I notice people I follow on Mastodon mentioned/being mentioned in places and if they have a Bluesky presence, it is that that is named usually. Like on podcast I hear people on I follow Mastodon decade to promote Bluesky instead. Or certain people who are Trek related, post things on Mastodon but if they have a Bluesky presence, that is what is brought up.
Mastodon still needs a better sign-up process. Try introducing a friend who's not especially technical to it: you'll soon see what I mean. You almost certainly want to read advice on the best app for their phone type and which servers approve new users quickly at the moment.
but... but... Bluesky is owned by a public benefit corporation! That means it's good, right?
::: spoiler hint That doesn't mean it's good. For example, OpenAI is a public benefit corporation. :::
He is very active on Mastodon.
EDIT: a Google search for Universeodon shows a sublink to his profile.
Apologies if this is a little intimate, but what do you do to prep yourself mentally for filming? Do you have a little routine you do every day, or do you just jump into makeup and start working?
i wish i had an elegant answer for this but i honestly just hop into it. most of my preparation happens far before i even get to set. i spend hours memorizing lines, practicing my deep voice, reading scripts, etc. As soon as i get to set all of the work has already been done.
thank you! i appreciate the insight. i am a community theatre guy, so my routine is basically i brush my teeth and sing a song from a mass i did in high school that really stretches my pipes and gets me in the right headspace. yeah i follow all the hard work happens way before you are there on set (your work definitely shows).
Star Trek has pushed progressive ideas throughout the years, from your experience on set, how do the people making the show, actors included, still try to carry that banner with the mounting political landscape?
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve broken?
my dignity
sent in my self tape, got a callback maybe 2 weeks later, met with producers, and then a few days later i had an offer. i accepted, and then i was on set within the next 2-3 months.
Hey Karim, I'm really enjoying Academy so far! Coming of age stories are part and parcel of the franchise since Wesley/Wil Wheaton, and I'm wondering: what's your favourite coming of age story/film/show/game?
(The Breakfast Club is a very valid answer btw)
i love the edge of seventeen, eighth grade, and ladybird
What scene was the hardest to film? what made it so hard?
season 1 episode 4 all of the scenes out in the woods with my family. it was just HOURS away from where i live, i had to wake up at 1am to get to work, i was SO HOT in the like 10 layers of clothes, they had to install a cooling system underneath to regulate my body tempurature, my wig was itching, my contacts were so dry they were sticking to the back of my eyelids, my skin was breaking out underneath the prosthetics, i was still trying to figure out how to use the voice, and then i had to get emotional when my brother died i started crying partly because i was sad about the death but also because i was just going through so much physically lol
Besides Klingons what's your favorite Star Trek species so far!
i think vulcans are really hot.
My man! You're a real one, Karim.
Starfleet academy has been rather divisive with fans and Star Trek fans as a whole have been known to be rather vocal.
Have you been paying attention to any of the comments made about the show (positive or negative) and has any of this effected your mental health (positive or negative)?
Also wanted to add that I'm personally loving the show and Jay-Den has been a standout character for me.
i read A LOT of comments, im chronically online. my mental health right now is GREAT, i'm just happy people are talking tbh lol
There's a strong tradition of griping about new Trek shows since TNG was announced. I hope the people working in them don't let the criticism affect them.
DS9 especially got one of the absolute worst fan reactions at the start. Primarily over the fact it wasn't set on a Starship with a story of the week layout. History has shown it to be one of, if not the, best shows in most people's rankings however.
Trek fans are some of the worst to get early feedback from honestly. So many just have kneejerk reactions and are defensive for no reason.
Do you like cats?
tbh no
Acceptable.
Finally, someone asked the most important question for the fediverse!
I love you in academy!! 😍 My question is how horny are your dms and if they have gotten hornier or less horny since you put on the forehead?
LOL. my dms are definitely a little crazy right now since the show dropped. not gonna lie
Lwaxana, you can't ask that!
and yet I did!
So fitting that Lwaxana is the one to ask this
Who is your favorite captain?
NAHLA AKE!!!
Congratulations on reducing your risk of a transporter "accident".
What franchise you'd love to be in? Airing or otherwise.
i wanna work with James Gunn real bad lol. I think I'd do a phenomenal job at playing Cyborg, i hear they are making a new teen titans movie. BUT i grew up on Marvel, i am a HUGE x men nerd. I would take ANY role in the new x men universe. I've watched all the movies multiple times, watched all the cartoons, x men 97 is one of my favorite shows on television, read the comics... like... IM PREPARED!! I hope my time in the star trek universe primes me to become a bad ass superhero in the future
They could give you Synch that would be cool as fuck! Hopefully one we'll see you in the mcu!
The obvious black Marvel character is Bishop. I think he's a great character and I'd love to see someone play him in a movie (though maybe Sandro Rosta is a better match for his physique). But, you know who I think you'd be great for is Longshot. In the comics he's white and blonde, but who cares. He's a genetically engineered alien. The Mojoverse is such a rich vein of potential movie content, and writers could have so much fun with a character whose superpower is luck.
Hey Karim! Thank you for your work on SFA, really enjoying the show!
Star Trek has done a bunch of genre-bending episodes (mostly on the holodeck), like noir-type crime stories, medieval costume dramas, or western adventures. If you could chose: What genre/setting would you like to put Jay-Den into?
telenovela
dios mío!
No había considerado el potencial! A 32th century telenovela would be a fantastic opportunity to both get a civilian perspective on the Federation, and to know what's been of Latin America in the ensuing millennium...
Hell yeah! Now i want to see Jay-Den with an eyepatch like Catalina Creel from Cuna de lobos
Super cool to have you here! Love Academy so far!
My question is, how to does Jay-Den like his raktajino?
spicy
Important question.
How much star trek did you watch before taking the role?
A LOT!!
Much has been made about the expansive Starfleet Academy set, but have you done much location work so far? Are there any interesting places you can mention?
Karim, your work as Jay-Den Kraag is so well done, you're definitely our favorite actor of the series! You do a better job portraying sometime caught between worlds than any other actor I've seen. Was it challenging to depict such a character?
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions!
First growing up, were you a fan of Star Trek? Second, now that you’re part of it, what has it been like to join such a large and long-lasting franchise?
The Next Generation episode “Thine Own Self” has an A-plot that sees Data having to go retrieve radioactive metal. He gets into a shuttle accident, landing on a planet where he loses his memory. The inhabitants of the planet give him the name Jayden. Is Jay-Den named after this episode?
They're both a bit stranger in a strange land.
That's a nice catch.
Hello Karim,
eventually you will go onto Fan Conventions. Have your costars given any words of advice how to navigate real world fan interactions?
Please ask Robert Picardo about his experience at Dragon Con. Had a great chat with him about his voice work when I met him. Would love to have you come someday and hang at the Pulse Bar!!!!
Yes! Robert Picardo and Michael Dorn have expressed how lovely and friendly the star trek fanbase is. Tawny Newsome said the same thing. I'm excited to dive in. the internet is cool but I'd really love to meet more of you in person.
Here is a selfie with Tawny and Eugene at Dragon Con a few years ago.
It's one of the few cons celebs can party in anonymity or not. We just want to party with all our fellow geeks, nerds, and fans! Its a whole different vibe from SDCC
Aw, the camera messed up your face. At least it got them right. 😉
Mid teleport
In episode '2F09', when Itchy plays Scratchy's skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a magic xylophone or something?
yes
Let me ask you a question. Why would someone wearing a shirt that says "Genius At Work" spend all his time watching a childrens TV show?
The itchy and scratchy show is a pop culture staple. That being said, seasons 2-9 are when the show peaked. I gave up watching after season 17.
How many tribbles do you think you could take in a fight?
zero. those little mf'ers are tuff
That's a perfectly respectable number.
Hey bud! I just wanted to say I really appreciate your show. I’m a middle age guy who grew up on TNG/DS9 and this show really captures the soul of Star Trek. Keep up the great work!!
As for a question, were you a Trek fan before? If so, how’s that incorporated into your performance, if at all. And if you weren’t a fan before, are you now, and how does no prior exposure to Star Trek inform your performance?
Thanks!!
Hello Karim, I am a Trekkie that hasn't seen Starfleet Academy, but because you're here, now I will watch it
:) i hope you have the best time
I hope you like it. Personally, I've been enjoying it a lot. I have appreciated how it's trying to do something different, whilst still having the core Star Trek core of having something to say.
I would strongly recommend any Trekkie watch at least as far as episode 4, which will probably end up being one of my favourite episodes of Star Trek. That episode also prominently features Karim, who absolutely steals the show.
I started watching because of the AMA. Jay-Den is a super interesting Klingon character, can recommend.
What’s it been like to work with actors like HH & PG? Learned anything from them?
What about TN and SC, they'd make me LMAO. There's also TM, IMHO the GOAT at playing clones, IYKYK.
lol. I was on mobile and lazy, thanks for keeping the naming format ;) I am embarrassed, I did not at all catch that it was TM when she was on screen.
SC plays my favorite SFA character... I played a game with my SO to see if she could spot him on the show. She cheated by accidentally seeing him in the credits after the first few episodes. Was fun while it lasted though.
I can't help but hear Disney's Goofy's laughter whenever I read IYKYK, which makes this even funnier.
How it feels to have all the Klingon makeup?
POWERFUL. everyone always stares at me and i get confused but then i realize its because i look REALLY cool especially in person with all the klingon makeup on lol
Amazing to see this!
What's your favourite Star Trek (can't say Starfleet Academy)and how did you end up here?
i love the 1st jj abrams movie. like... LOVE.
How did i end up here? on the 'verse? met u/Admin in real life and they asked me to come and i said hell yes.
Nice! I also enjoyed the first one.
Your open minded attitude to the platform is very Trek and you've made a lot people here very happy! Have an awesome day.
@DamienGramatacus
Cross-fedi threading needs attention, choices and discisions. What went by is appreciated, better coming.
Do you think Starfleet Academy is reaching younger audiences? What do you think about Strange New Worlds as far as that demographic? I ask as a 50 year old who grew up on TOS and TNG and everything since. (I've actually more or less liked every instance of Star Trek, but I really do like where SNW and SA are going recently!)
yes! A TON of young people messaging me every single day!!
Hey Karim, thanks for doing this. Really like your acting. I wanted to ask how did the name "Jay-Den" came to be? It sounds distinctively not Klingon and I assume meant to sound like a US American name which seems out of place.
thank you! i did not name this character, this sounds like a question for our showrunner
If you could choose to play a character from the original series, who would it be?
uhura
Bad ass answer.
For sure!
I honestly kind of expected it (set him up for it), but I'd be disappointed if he hadn't said it.
Also, I've now talked to a Klingon about LT. Uhura so check that off the list.
https://startrek.website/post/6465008
What was the audition process like? Did you have any clue what you were auditioning for, or was it buried under 47 layers of secrecy?
they tried to bury it under a fake name, but my agent caught wind and told me immediately. the audition was actually really fun for me i had a good time doing it. once i got cast, i got to screen test with potential actors for darem and they asked my opinion on them. i YELLED george's name in their ear, his audition was amazing.
Qapla! Do you speak any Klingon besides the lines you had to memorize? Did you study the history/lore of the Klingons? Btw, I love how you are bringing Jay-Den to life.
Hi, Karim! I just watched the latest episode and I adored it. I can’t wait to see where Jay-Den goes with Kyle and Darem. If it’s something you can talk about will these three end up together romantically? Definitely picked up on some of the subtext with episode 7 and I’m absolutely loving it! Thank you!
haha no spoilers, but there's definitely A LOT more Jay-den romance coming, especially in season 2.
Hi Karim! Thank you for your work on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! I've thoroughly enjoyed your work in particular on the show!
The character of Jay-Den has broken with what many fans have considered to be canonically or at least, stereotypically Klingon, and the show has drawn some criticism for this.
Others have praised the writing and your acting as Jay-Den for redefining or at least recontextualizes what being Klingon ultimately means in a Universe that embraces and cultivates people of infinite diversity in infinite combinations.
I was wondering if you could speak to the challenges you may have had in the endeavor to portray Jay-Den given this context?
It is obvious you did your research for the role beforehand and I can only imagine it must have been somewhat intimidating portraying a character on a major franchise that breaks with what some fans consider canon while also pushing the inclusivity of the Star Trek Universe forward.
I'll reiterate my thanks in advance to you for doing this AMA.
the challenging part for me has not been the criticism. that will ALWAYS exist, no matter what role I decide to take. Plus, all of my social media accounts have been FLOODED with love from fans, its been overwhelming! Instagram, tik tok, threads, facebook, millions of clicks, THOUSANDS of comments and messages from people who are excited about my character. So it's a bit tough to focus on any negativity when there is so much positivity. The CHALLENGING part for me was just transforming into the character in the first place. The prosthetics took 4-5 hours a day, 18-20 hour shoot days, learning how to do the voice... now that was the challenging part. but ultimately I am proud of the character that we created and i genuinely believe gene roddenberry would be too. even his son, rod roddenberry came to set one day and offered his support that was really cool!
That's so cool! Thank you again for your answers!
Hi and so happy to have you!
I love that you're playing - I don't know if I'm interpreting it right, but among all aspects of Jay-Den, I think, at least - a non-neurotypical Klingon. I'd love to hear your perspective on how you go about playing him not just as neurodiverse, but specifically as a neurodiverse Klingon!
Star Trek has always been a show using sci-fi elements to draw parallels to our own culture. What mirror do you feel Jay-Den holds up to people in the real world?
Hi Karim, and thanks for the AMA!
As your character is a healer and a now a medical student, how much preparation you have had to do about health, medicine and the experiences of medical school to give depth to the role, aside from the series own technical lore?
ummm i mean i by NO means had to study anything from an actual medical school to do this role lol. At most, they trained us on how to use the actual medical devices on the day that we have to use them so that we look like we know what we are doing haha. most of my studying was learning how to speak in a lower voice, and learning how to speak klingon.
Thanks for the answer!
The voice, real or CG? If CG why did they feel they needed to make the characters voice so deep compared to the other klingons? It's a bit jarring listening, especially the debate episode.
He talks a bit about it on this instagram video uploaded to reddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/trektalk/comments/1quvssy/starfleet_academy_whats_up_with_the_voice_of/
TL;DR it's the voice he puts on for the role but might also be adjusted to some extent in post.
Hi Karim! It's amazing to have you here answering our questions! You interact so much with the fans, and it's amazing to see a community be created in real time through your interactions with us. I'm loving your preformance as Jay-Den, cementing him as one of my favorite Trek characters of all time. I've got a serious and a silly question!
jay-den and I are very similar. i think we both act VERY differently than how we look or are expected to be. i am a soft, gentle man and I believe that translates to Jay-den.
if i was in star trek personally, i would not be in starfleet. i would be an entertainer of some sort, on stage, or maybe in bartender on the ship
Hi Karim!
I'm liking Starfleet Academy. It's hard to pick a favourite character though ^_^'
How did you prepare for your role as Jay Den?
(more questions might come up if I think of them before you answer)
dozens of costume fittings, a few days of prosthetics and makeup tests, eye contact lens fittings, dozens of hours of work with vocal coach to drop my voice, a couple hours of practice with klingon language coach, watched a TON of star trek, particularly any episodes that featured klingons
Do they provide actors with easy access to the entire Star Trek catalogue so they can prepare, or is it something the actors have to do on their own?
I don't think they actually do it this way. But, if I were in charge, I'd build a tool for actors, writers, costumers, prop artists, etc. that allowed them to quickly search through the entire Star Trek catalogue going all the way back to the 60s to find examples of whatever they were looking for. So, you could search for "Klingon" or "Klingon marriage" or "Klingon ship console" and it would pull up relevant clips. Basically imagine something like YouTube, but containing only Star Trek content, and designed to help all the creative people match their stuff to the existing lore, rather than something built for entertainment.
When you were a 1 year-old, Katee Sackhoff was a 21 year old actress just starting out as Starbuck on the Battlestar Galactica remake. I see a lot of parallels with the cast of BSG in the early 2000s and the Star Trek: Academy "kids" in 2026.
On her YouTube channel she just recently started watching that BSG series for the first time. It's really interesting to see how she talks about her life in her 20s, looking back as an actress now in her 40s. She doesn't seem to have big regrets, but you definitely get the impression she'd like to send some messages back to the younger Katee. Have you and the rest of the cast found mentors found mentors who can help you with your careers and performances?
Star Trek is unique in that there have been almost continuous shows and movies on since the 1980s. So, there are dozens of actors at various stages in their careers who might be able to offer perspectives. For you, I wonder if Michael Dorn would be someone you'd reach out to. Not only is he obviously a fellow klingon, but he also started out as a musician before going into acting. There's also Wil Wheaton, who seems like he was really grateful to have been "adopted" by the TNG cast, and is the kind of guy who would pay that kindness forward.
I hope the man gets to your question too, to tell the story himself, but just in case he doesn't, after the AMA, you can search the web about him and his character and Worf or Dorn. There are articles that briefly talk about the two of them touching base on the subject of portraying Klingons on Star Trek.
But, again, I'd wait till the AMA is over. It'll likely be more meaningful hearing it direct from the source.
Love your work on the show! Is the voice hard to do? It seems like it would be hard to do all day.
at first it was hard, now it feels like second nature.
You guys ever have to stop the set because you gotta go to the restroom?
I was recently on a hike with a group and just held it in uncomfortably throughout the entire time lol
every single day yes
Do the writers and directors give you a lot of input into how to play your character and the direction of his story/development?
If it were up to you, what kind of scenes or storylines would you most like to play or see Jay-Den Kraag in?
Stealing from Colbert, what is the best sandwich? Both for you and for your character?
Have never watched anything Star Trek before, but might give it a try because of this. 👍
Thanks for the AMA!
What previous trek cast member do you want to do a cameo on Academy, just so you can share the set with them?
Michael Burnham!!!
Thanks for the AMA!
How did you find the Fediverse? Have you found it enjoyable?
Your acting during the debate episode was incredible. My only question is this: How did you decide what your character would sound like? His "accent" gets "awkward young adult Klingon" across very well in my opinion, and I personally think you nailed it
I don't know if it's expired already, but what drew you into acting and the Starfleet Academy role? Were you into the series before hand?
Did you have any expectations that changed before and after taking the role on?
Is there something that surprised you in the role/show?
i've always been a singer and performer as a kid, acting professionally as an adult is just an extension of what i loved doing as a kid. the starfleet academy role came up as an audition with my agent, i sent in a self tape, and a few weeks later i was cast. it was pretty quick. this role and show is my first venture into star trek, i binged a lot of it after getting cast.
i didn't expect the role to be so challenging tbh, there was no way for me to know until i did it. i quickly learned that filming sci fi take a LOT of energy. long days, long nights. i was surprised by how challenging the prosthetics process is. i researched a lot, jim carrey during the grinch, doug jones, colin farrell in the penguin, ALL of them have been vocal in interviews about how tough the prosthetics process is and i learned first hand
thank you for the reply! that's something I definitely wasn't considering either
Thanks for doing an AMA on Lemmy! If you could play any race in the Star Trek universe which would you pick and why?
Hi, Karim!
First off, so freaking cool of you to do this on Lemmy!
Second, I've noticed that Academy seems to be showcasing a lot of the rarer species in Trek and giving fans little glimpses into how they have been since their original debuts. What star trek species would you be most excited to see again in the show? I'm personally hoping for a Denobulan to make an appearance (hopefully more than one!).
And a twofer, cause I'm greedy: what is your favorite/least favorite part of working on the show?
Hello Karim,
Fantastic that you’re the providing the first Trek cast member AMA in the fediverse! Incredible way to get into the franchise.
I hope this will be a good experience on your side and that you might consider having your own account on Mastodon or Pixelfed.
A few questions please…🖖🏼
— In your study of previous Klingons in the franchise, have you considered B’Elanna Torres journey to accepting her Klingon heritage? Do you see some parallels in her discomfort with Klingon culture, its norms and expectations with Jay-Den’s search for a path to his own identity while still respecting his culture of origin?
— Was there a specific moment, in your preparation process for the role, when it suddenly came together for you and you knew who you need to be as Jay-Den? Could you share when that was?
— What other languages, if any, do you speak beyond English? If you are bilingual or multilingual, do you find that helps with the Klingon dialogue and phrases?
— How are you finding Toronto and the surrounding area? Have you got out much around the region? Other than what appears to be the Escarpment in S1E4, have you been out on location shoots?
Have you been privy to any of the discussions about what it means for the show to be set a thousand years later than most of the franchise, like where it makes sense for a previous entry to guide the interpretation, and where it maybe makes as much or more sense to let things go a little crazy. The interplay probably has to drift more toward storytelling realities within the brand than it does gaming-out what would "really" happen over a millennium of Star Trek time.
Honestly, when I think about it, the post-Burn era seems downright conservative in terms of societal change, certainly at least within Starfleet. That's obviously necessary for it to be recognizable as a property, but it's kind of funny to think that it's as static as it seems, like closer to the difference between 426 and 1426 than between 1026 and 2026 CE, and I'm probably understating how different the first two were.
Loving Academy, long may it continue.
Do you have any power to get us a series, and I’ll take a mini-series, with Seven of Nine as Captain and Raffi as Number Two? If not, do you know who does and do you have any dirt on them?
LOL. oh but i am just an actor. i think you'd have to talk to someone at Paramount about that. i have dirt on EVERYONE but i'll never tell
@galoisghost
Seven, the movie.
I will take it!
“The Search for Elnor”
what does it feel like to play the first autistic and queer Klingon? (AFAIK)
Is it hard to do that voice? Do ya drink a lot of tea on set or are ya naturally baritone.
Just want to say: While I'm not a huge fan of the highschool drama part of the show, I love all the characters so far <3 You're all doing a great job!
thank you Skave!
wow. this is beyond exciting.
I've loved your interpretation of a Klingon. What informs how to bring such an odd alien and culture to life? What new things are you trying to introduce and what things are you trying to pay homage too?
hello Karim,
saw the videos of your voice training Its amazing seeing you comfortably hit the lower registers.
If asked by the show runners to do a song, what would you sing in its original Klingon version?
(I hope its Crash Test Dummies. "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" would love to hear you do a cover of it Klingon or English!!!)
What's your take on the current discourse surrounding your show? I haven't watched it yet but "the Internet" has been right about precisely 1 singular show they were hating on, so it's already got a glowing recommendation.
ummm all i see is love on my social media accounts, litterally millions of clicks thousands of supporting messages and comments. i dont pay attention to negativity much. ALOT of the negative stuff is homophobic, sexist, racist, bigotry... its hard for me to give any of that kinda stuff any merit
Very healthy outlook! Thanks!
What was your top reference going into acting in Star Trek? What personal twists you added to that?
Hi Karim! Great job playing Jay-Den!
If you were a cadet at Starfleet Academy, which electives would you pick?
Hey! It's awesome to have you here. I've been really enjoying the show so far, and your performance has been one of my favourite parts. You bring such nuance and depth to the character, and I can't imagine it is easy to give such a compelling performance when you're playing a character as reserved as Jay-Den.
In preparation for this role, how much (if at all) did you study mannerisms of past actors who played Klingon characters? Were there any particular aspects that served as inspiration for how you want to play Jay-Den? Or perhaps things that you strove to avoid, due to wanting to bring something distinct to this character?
(Or inspirations for your performance beyond Star Trek)
How did your understanding of the character (and how you played him) develop once you were on set? Were there any particular interactions with members of the cast/crew that shaped how you portrayed Jay-Den?
Smaller question: Favourite episode of Starfleet Academy?
Karim! You’re a wonderful actor I adore your portrayal of Jay-Den, how much input did you have in your interpretation of the character?
Instead of IG, you should hop on Pixelfed
One step at a time!
Oh wow, I didn't know this corner of the internet got AMA's. 8O
Late to the party and not really a star trek fan, but still, good on Karim for popping by! 🤗
Hi Karim! You are such a joy to watch on screen and behind the scenes :) Your posts and those from the rest of the cast have added so much enjoyment to the starfleet academy experience. I know we have seen some of Jay-Den's backstory already, but I wanted to know if you had any headcanons about his childhood/adolescence. For example: my aunt told me a story about how when she was a girl, she kept a chicken as a pet, but when she wasn't home, my great grandma ended up giving the chicken some alcohol before cutting off it's head and cooking it for dinner. When my aunt found out what the meal in front of her was she cried. My headcanon is that something like that happened to Jay-Den :']
Hey! I think your acting is one of the best parts of the show. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Cool! Didn't know about this new show. Defenitely will watch it.
Thanks for doing this, so cool!
Hello Karim, what are you most recommended/most stay-away-from-this experiences in Toronto (and area) so far?
Thanks for all the hard work on the new show! 🖖
Hi Karim, nice to have you here.
Do you think, that given the current state of our world, the 32. century is more accessible than the 24. century, since society has to rebuild after the burn and seems to have lost some of its previous values along the way?
What do you think of Discovery Klingons? It seems like they came and went with little explanation, while the early TOS human-looking Klingons did get an explanation in canon eventually.
Thanks for doing this here instead of corporate social media.
adding to this question, of all the different versions of Klingons we have seen so far, in which other costuming and prosthetics would you like to perform?
Hi Karim! I am absolutely adoring Jay-Den's character. If you're able to discuss it are there plans for his triangle with Darem and Kyle? I might've fangirled a wee bit hard this last episode with all the teasers being dropped XD
Love the show, but not a fan of "The Burn" or the sort of dystopia it creates, did you grow up watching Trek? Is the show what you expected?
I wouldn't call it a dystopia. It's certainly less utopian than most other Trek we've had, but despite all the grimness, it isn't shaped by the misery and suffering in the way that dystopias in fiction tend to — hope and idealism seem to be driving things more
There will always be disasters, and suffering, and unfortunate events, and there certainly have been throughout Star Trek, but I too would prefer we had more protopian sci-fi.
I think SFA is actually trying to be more light and positive and less serious and dramatic, vs Disco for example. SNW seemed to make that intentional shift as well. And I think that's also why other ST properties like Lower Decks and Prodigy are so highly rated.
SFA started out pretty dark, and I immediately went 'yuck'... But again, I think they are working their way towards something better. Reopening the Academy is kind of a reboot for the Federation, so it'll probably be getting better still.
I wonder what kind of insight Karim has into this, that he can share?
Not really a question, more of an observation: timezones exist 😛
Not to the American East Coast😅(I added a sticky comment clarifying)
What would you like to say to people like myself who think that Starfleet Academy is written by people who seem to have never watched or understood our favorite science fiction series? (Or at least never understood the point)
tawny newsome is literally in our writer's room lol
Tawny started writing with lower decks though, yes?
Star Trek started in 1966. The last 5-6 years have not been kind to the franchise in the slightest..
Did you watch Lower Decks and/or see all Star Trek releases as they came out? Tawny Newsome is a real one, and Lower Decks pays such homage to the entire franchise in a beautiful way.
Then again, can't satisfy everyone. Enjoy what you enjoy, and be happy that the things you don't - but are harmless - are at least enjoyed by others <3
@Reygle I would say that not everything has to be the original series (#TOS ).
Oh I agree there, but they could exist in the same "universe" as TNG, DS9, or Voyager rather than throwing it all out with the bath water. Edit: or even Enterprise. These could all be more than set dressing for whatever this is.
that you should touch grass about it. you're smothering your favorite franchise by expecting it to remain unchanged after 6 decades
