The live-action "Legend of Zelda" film will feature Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link

This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen.

Considering how much rizz link usually has, he’s 100% a mute bard

After watching Hundreds of Beavers, I am for firmly convinced this is a real possibility and anyone who makes Link talk doesn't understand the character.

Holy shit, hundreds of beavers mention. God what a fantastic fucking movie.

Don't forget all the bush trimming.

... no, no THAT!!!

I hope it's not full of fan service comedy, though. That stuff worked in the animated Mario adaptation, but Zelda is generally a more serious franchise with more adult themes. If it tries to do the family friendly "laughs for all ages" thing it is going to cross over into cringe territory very quickly.

very promising sign that they're casting for the roles instead of casting for recognizable names. i am cautiously optimistic

Danny Devito as the Great Fairy.

Jack black as gorons. All of them, the whole race.

15

Yeah I've got to say it is a very positive sign that I don't know either of these actors. Also helps with suspension of disbelief.

28

Definitely, and it's also wild just how out of left field these choices feel in general. Which is a good thing!

Possibly, but it also keeps the budget much lower. Are they casting the best people, or good people who also don't ask for a huge budget?

2

People young enough whose performance will define the role rather than the role being defined by a well known face. The question will be settled when they announce Ganondorf.

Somehow didn't expect them to pick such a young actor for Link, even though it does correspond to Link's age in many of the games.

I'm really curious to see more of this movie. I think Zelda is a really difficult series to adapt well.

I predict the movie itself will be kind of meh, but the soundtrack will be awesome

46

Oooh I hadn't even thought of that. I was treating this movie with a sense of dread, but I am excited to hear new music with the motifs of the games.

In comparison to the animated Mario movie, most likely.

Live action doesn’t usually translate as well from animated/rendered media.

Personally I think Zelda is better off being live action than the kind of style Illumination/DreamWorks is known for.

Other than the Toon Link games the series has always had a more anatomical art style that is rarely seen in Western animated film.

11

That’s fair.

Dream world would have Ghibli pick it up, or the team(s) behind Secret Level.

But we’re already in motion on this plan so just gotta cross our fingers and hope for the best.

4

I think their only hope is to go with a small, small story that only hints at the larger world. If they try to go epic then the movie universe begins and ends with this one entry.

I don't think they can resist the trap of going for the obvious epic world-stakes kind of story though.

9

I assume they'll go "Tears of the Kingdom" or "Hyrule" instead of "Ocarina of Time" or "Majora's Mask."

Which starts off mid.

There's a couple on mastodon, so you might be able to ping one of them from a comment.

I don't remember how to compose a reply than pings a user from Connect on my phone, tho. So, I can't provide an example.

2

Looks like they're going younger with the casting. The characters are kids in most of the games after all.

I really wish they had picked Hunter for Zelda 😔

Today's image of the pair looks to feature the actors in some sort of costume for their roles

Ainsworth, meanwhile, wears what appears to be a dark green tunic.

That's brown. Not sure how they come to that conclusion of colour

7

Yes. Finally.

I remember reading about a film studio acquiring the rights to make a Zelda and a Metroid movie way back in or just after high school and then it just never happened and that's how I came to learn that sometimes studios buy the rights for a thing not to make the thing, but to prevent a competitor from making that thing.

5

or we won't because Nintendo will relegate it to the archives like they almost did for SMB.
