The only thing that disappointed me about Universe was that it stopped when it was just getting going.
I didnt mind a different approach, and it was way too slow to start, but it did get moving and I think did start getting fun/interesting.
Though as I understand, the comics are an even bigger mess than the show and absolutely not worth the time.
The comics don't continue anything. They add a bunch of shit that didn't make sense and then end the run without solving anything.

yes, and then when a new series was announced AMAZON decided to cancel it again, because they wanted a 'series" broader with the audience than even sgu. so basically a starwars/nutrek type series.
season 1 doomed the series, basically lack of any aliens at all, and when the nakai appeared halfway they weren't a major threat,
the drones were suppose to rectify that situation in season 2 and 3(if it had ever been aired)
This was because the fans were angry that the network canceled Atlantis and preferred to cause the destruction of the franchise.
I remember laughing my ass off because of a scene in SGU where a bunch of the crew was praying.
I mean, I always had a pet peeve about inconsequentialism with earths own religions, but all those years killing 'false' gods and helping peoples overcoming superstition just for SG crew members to pray just felt so off for the franchise.
I was always hoping we'd get to see System Lord Yahweh.
they were praying when destiny was going to slam into the sun to recharge. and i believed some of them stayed on the "eden"planet and died in the end anyways.(after the planet builder aliens came to planet and sent them to destiny later on off screen.
SGU really took a wrong turn and shouldn't have been made. Only the premise was good, everything else (except maybe the graphics) was garbo. It was basically a space drama with people seemingly stuck in their highschool years. Stuck billions of light years away and the best they could do was argue about rank.
It's like they took their Wormhole Xtreme joke about "younger and edgier" and made it into a real series.
its basically voyager/reimagined BSG, mostly bsg because the newest one avoided anything too futuristic, and no aliens(i believe the original had aliens in it).
even arguing about rank could have been interesting. you're x bajillion lightyears from home, can a rank structure that was part but now cut off from a massive organization survive? should it? does the military answer to the government staff aboard in leau of an elected commander in chief, or is the military in total control because the situation warrante it? or just because they have the guns? where do the civilians fit into that? there are so many interesting angles to explore, they just... didn't
That is a recurring issue? It happens in the show several times? They even have an "attempted coup" to get civilian control - the military command on the ship disobey earth lots of times
season 1 was a whole filler season, that doomed the series, they shouldve met with an overarching enemy/aliens the first or 2nd episode getting on the destiny. instead we had some sand bugs, and some aliens later.
I was in college and just getting started in life during the SG-1 and Atlantis runs, so I missed out on basically all their original airings being busy with life.
SGU was my first experience with the franchise since seeing the movie years earlier. It will always have a special place for me.
I always thought it was funny watching Brian J Smith try to play a butch military straight guy. He’s way too twinky lol.

That end titles theme though, might be my favorite piece of music from Joel.
I loved sg:u, it was what got me into stargate. Hell it makes the other shows characters seem flat in comparison 🤷
It's two different kinds of series, most people who liked one weren't into the other. And ppl who would have liked universe never tried it
Indeed. I loved SG1, enjoyed SGA, and got bored about halfway through the SGU pilot. Never really came back to it.
Maybe I should give it another try. It's certainly been long enough since it stopped airing. What about the show really drew you in?
For me, the first time I saw Stargate SG1 on TV, I was like "Air force for sci-fi? Absolutely not." But then I had a job working the night shift where about 2/3 of the job was "stay awake in case of emergency". I could watch TV for part of the shift, and SG1 was the most interesting thing that was on...didn't take me long to really get into the show.
For me it was the lost in space, surviving one crisis after another - billions of lightyears from earth.
Helps that the main character is a gamer kid lol, and I quickly fell in love with dr. Rush
