Has google stopped working for finding anything?

Everybody is blaming SEO, which is true - but Google is also hamstrung by walled gardens.

Before Facebook, most content posted to the web was open. It could be viewed by anyone without logging in. Reddit even uses this paradigm.

But then Facebook started putting everything behind their account login and suddenly, Google can no longer spider a significant amount of the conversation going on on the Internet - and it can't link you to it either, because the link would be dead if you weren't a logged-in Facebook user. And of course it's not just Facebook.

This is why appending site:reddit.com has come into fashion in the past couple years. Reddit, being open, viewable without a login, is a fantastic source for finding people who are talking about exactly what you're searching for.

And it's another reason why Meta is cancer: all the conversations going on about whatever problem you are experiencing that made you do a search in the first place, if they exist in private groups on something like Facebook - they are useless to you and useless to anyone but the members of that private group. We are losing our giant public knowledge base because capitalism.

Mozilla removes uBlock Origin Lite from Addon store. Developer stops developing Lite for Firefox; "it's worrisome what could happen to uBO in the future."

I'm convinced that 80% of all these threads and the responses within them are astroturfing by Google to cause everyone to despair that Mozilla is no better than Google and that there will never be anything that could be developed to compete with Google if Mozilla went under.

There's just too goddamn many of them and they're all filled with the same negative comments. It's just like the "no way bro, I love paying for YouTube why you gotta have everything for free bro?" bullshit from a few months ago.

Right-Wing Influencer Laura Loomer Testified Under Oath That Lindsey Graham Is Gay

Loomer also took aim at U.S. representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who she said “carries roast beef in her pockets,” per TNR.

“I know she likes to eat at Arby’s,” Loomer added. When asked about whether she was trying to comment on Greene’s body or her sex life, Loomer said, “No. I’m talking about Arby’s, the sandwiches. I’m talking about Arby’s. I would — I’m a very direct person.”

I feel like I'm losing my grip on reality, am I supposed to take something away from this? Is this code or something? Are these people just trolling 24/7 like children despite being in charge of... everything?

“I can’t believe this is America”: U.S. Veteran who voted for Trump says ICE arrest of his wife shattered everything he believed

Evangelical Christian people were lied to, if you really want to know the truth. And that’s exactly what happened.

Evangelical Christians are easy to lie to, if you want to know the truth, because they disdain intelligence, preferring their world in which they cosplay magic in fairyland 24/7 without even a tiny hint of self-awareness (because they have none). Given the same choice he would do it again, because he's too cost-sunk in his dumbass roleplaying to do anything different.

Elton John Says Legalizing Marijuana in America and Canada Is “One of the Greatest Mistakes of All Time”

Translation: I did whatever the fuck I wanted to do and now I've worked out that I was a shithead. It therefore follows that it was these external things that made me a shithead. Nevermind that countless other people have experienced the same things as "essentially harmless fun." I, of course (having been a raging shithead) am in a position to know better.

The logic is flawless.

YSK There’s someone running around Lemmy posting misinformation against Wikipedia

Interesting all this WP news I'm hearing today. Last week I downloaded the entirety of Wikipedia. Anyone can do it, the base archive (no pictures) is only about 25G, although the torrent is slow AF, took me... almost 2 weeks to download it.

I did this because I feel like this might be the last chance to get a version of it that has any vestige of the old order in it, the old order being "trying to stick to ideals and express truth rather than rewriting history to the fascists' specifications."

I'd love to be wrong, but if I'm not, I feel like it will potentially be a good reference in the future if needed.
