Mexico’s first openly non-binary magistrate and prominent LGBTQ activist found dead

Reply in thread

You say that like they didnt legalize gay marriage, elect LGBTQ allies, strengthen and protect abortion laws in response to the roe vs wade overturner, and legalize pot. And that's just to name a few.

Oh and you don't lose your house if you have to go to the hospital without insurance.

Say what you will about Mexico, but in some aspects it's more advanced than United States. At least when it comes to the red states.

Protesters in US capital warn of Israeli 'genocide' in besieged Gaza

Reply in thread

Two wrongs don't make a right. Both sides have done wrong. Isreal has attacked ambulances unprovoked. Hamas attacked Isreal at a music fest. Isreal retaliated by attacking schools and hospitals (aka, people that had nothing to do with said attack) Isreal has been subjugating Gaza to sub-human conditions for 20+ years. The attack on the music fest isn't justified but it is understandable.

Again. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Climate activists target jets, yachts and golf in a string of global protests against luxury

Reply in thread

Golf can use a terrible amount of water, plus keeping it mowed, and cutting forests for it. Places like Canada or the UK might be fine if it's not a drought year. But there's golf courses as far as Mexico. There's places in Mexico that is so dry outside of the summer months that golf courses would use a disgusting amount of water to keep the greens... green... there was a golf course in Mexico I went to that only bothered with the putting area and a bit around that. Everything else was dirt. It wasn't that pleasant of an experience because you do kick up dust when teeing off and whatnot. However, no way to lose your ball I suppose. Still, the water they needed just for the putting area must have been disgusting.

💅 Voyager icon design contest — Submissions thread

This is such a fun and cool idea, but.

Please, absolutely do not choose an AI generated piece. If people have to prove the piece is genuine via sending in a PSD, SAI file, etc (any file that shows layers) or sketches. So be it.

An AI piece would take away from the fun and authenticity from this. Artists, writers, voice actors, and other creative are having a hard time as it is with the rise of AI. And the AI bros defending it. A person who uses AI and calls themselves an artist is the same energy as someone taking a frozen meal and heating it up a microwave calling themselves a chef.

AI Is an interesting tool and has its uses, but people are abusing it right now and it's getting harder and harder to tell what is authentic.

Starfield is the classic Bethesda experience but the hype around it implied it wouldn't be. The classic Bethesda experience is fine, it's a good base of a nice, free-form game that lacks polish. They are also games that need at least a few mods to actually be good. Vanilla Skyrim, etc sucks after you start modding it. Even if all you download is an end, a weather, the unofficial patch, and the better dialog and message box controls mods. Playing starfield I was immediately like "where is better dialog and message box controls?"

The game has potential but a thing that bothers me is landing on a planet and it says I explored 90% of it before I even exited the ship. I went to earth and there was no evidence of there ever being life and major cities. No ruined homes, no cities, no like... Mt Rushmore head that broke off and found where it isn't supposed to be, no statue of liberty torch. Nothing. They could have crafted a really cool ruined earth and instead it was just... sand and rocks. What do you think is behind that rock? Another rock. And when it comes to Earth, you don't need to have everything be where it needs to. The tip of a pyramid in Egypt makes sense but I see nothing wrong with finding the broken Washington monument in the middle of what was the Atlantic ocean. Or the broken big Ben in the middle of what was Japan. If any planet should have gotten randomly generated assets of ruins or even just manually crafted, it should have been Earth.

Most planets are empty and give you almost no reason to explore them. The game is about exploring planets, but playing this game makes me want to play Starbound instead.

I also don't know why everyone compares it to Skyrim when I feel like I'm playing Fallout 4 instead of Skyrim. Skyrim would have been an improvement, I wasn't a fan of FO4.

Murder victim Kelly Wilkinson repeatedly visited police in fear. They said she was ‘cop shopping’

US has the highest domestic violence / death by gun rates in the entire world.

There is no such thing as good guy with a gun. Look at the victory parade just last week. People with guns everywhere just ran away for their lives instead of shooting the bad guy with the gun they love boasting about.

The worst mass shooting in Canada in history was 12 dead. What's the worst death toll in the US?

The last school shooting in Canada was about 20 years ago, when was the last one in the US?

If this Australian couple had guns, 90% chance she would have been shot and killed by beer husband instead of whatever means he used. The police should have done their jobs.

That is the reality.

Airbnb tenant refuses to leave after staying in Brentwood home 17 months rent-free

Reply in thread

I think what they (poorly) meant was that there shouldn't be individuals/entities that own multiple houses, to give everyone/more people the chance to own homes. There is a serious housing shortage because a lot of people and companies buy multiple homes. Some use it as basically a form of money (notably the Chinese) and others use it as a form of income (Individuals/entities that own 10 or more affordable/family homes and rent it out. Airbnb was/is a huge contributer to this issue)

As a rule, people today cannot buy homes and rent is a major reason why. In most places rent is over 60% of the average paycheck. How are you supposed to afford a house? You won't even get accepted for a mortgage with the average paycheck. This issue has a lot of consequences, suchas the birthrate is falling at an exponential rate. It's barely at the replacement level, and in some places, below. And the trend is continuing.

Soaking in the worst air quality in the world

Climate deniers think all the forest fires are some government conspiracy because a bunch of fires starting all at the same time is super sus. Even though it happens all the time after a big heatwave / drought and pine forests are made to burn. Sometimes these trees will just... not spontaneously combust exactly, but pretty much do. Pine forests are built to burn every 2 years or so, it's one of the ways they reproduce - pines are genetically predisposed to catching fire easily and their sap is very very flammable. These forests burn hot and quickly but a fast fire isn't a very destructive fire. These trees often are not burnt to the ground. However, we are so effective at putting fires out so this 2 year burn off isn't happening. So, years of underbrush, etc is building up that otherwise wouldn't be. This makes what is supposed to be a fast burn fire, into a slow burn one. What would be a natural fireline because there is a large gap between some trees, isn't one because all the underbrush connects them.

So it's not just because of climate change, but we are responsible either way. There aren't any easy answers for this one because there are houses scattered all over the places. But there is no helping these Trump worshipping conspiracy theorists and we need to consider them a lost cause. Nothing will shake their faith in their Orange God so we must bolster against them and move on without them.

Three stabbed teens were driven from a party to a nearby hospital, only to find that the ER was closed. Their story is one of many

Live in a fairly rural area of Canada, the hospital closest to me closes at night. No new patients can come in. They are too understaffed. They used to let in serious emergencies but they don't anymore. So it's better to call 911 than to drive someone to a hospital yourself.

If I call 911, they send us to one of the hospitals about twice the distance away. It's not super far thankfully, 40mins instead of 20 but still.

Looking for Movies that Showcase Positive Masculinity

Sokka also has very good character growth in terms of healthy and positive male traits. He starts out as a bit abrasive and sexist. The opening scene of episode 1 is actually just Katara going off on him about sexism. The scene is kind of abrasive but again, the character grows really well as the series progresses. And I think Sokka is important too. Showing that male characters CAN change and CAN become better people.

Plus, the show does have another case of character growth, with one of the most compelling in all media when it comes to Zuko. And towards the end of the show, he's also showcasing a lot of positive traits. The duality with his sister is also important. Because this is one of the only shows that has the female counterpart as more violent/"evil" than a male character. Usually the female character is always the gentle, kind, loving one that tempers the male one. But they flipped that on its head. No, girls can be abusive too.

How do you feel about CGI in anime?

Like anything else, depends how it is used and how it looks. Games like genshin impact and granblue fantasy versus barely look cgi/3d. You can tell it's cgi, but it'll be easy to forget it's cgi.

But then you have cgi that's just very obvious. I notice it mostly with anything vehicle or mech based. The drill in avatar the last Airbender, space ships, cars, etc. Often times these things are so noticeable against the 2d environment that it takes you out of what you're watching. It's better today, the cgi mechs were less glaring in legend of korra as an example. But it can be difficult to make them "blend".

I think we are at the point we can make cgi look like anything we want. Puss in boots the last wish barely felt cgi with its painterly style, textures, lower fps, and 2d backgrounds. We don't need everything to look like disney/Pixar. I think it would be neat to see an anime in the classic anime/etc style that is fully 3d/cgi. Beastars is an interesting anime and style but it doesn't "feel" anime. It feels much more "western" in vibes, style, etc so I have trouble counting it.
