What movie terrified you as a child? Or what character?

I remember watching That Kiljunen Family (1981) as a kid and being shocked by one particular scene. Summary: This is a Finnish comedy film about a goofball rural family who win a contest and get to go to Helsinki. Goofball Family in Big City level hijinks ensue. The scene that terrified me was the one where the kids go joyriding trams. Probably too speedy for my kid brain.

After my father passed away, I found out that he had this film in his DVD collection, and my mother was like "sure, take all movies you want." (...doubled my DVD collection and then some.) Okay, the tram scene wasn't that bad. Obviously. (...I don't know, the humour hasn't dated the movie, it's just that a lot of the gags are only funny in theoretical sense. I did find one scene funny. One of the kids turns light switch off, it inexplicably cuts power to a whole city quarter, a foreign dignitary gets rescued from an elevator stuck between floors and shouts "down with nuclear energy!")

Yeah Why Is That Wally

"There are two things that I hate about the immigrants", said the random dingdong in one breath, "first of all, they're not doing any work, and second of all, they take all of our jobs."

...I heard this joke in the 1980s. The dingdongs haven't gotten any less self-contradictory.

Thin rule crust

Dunno how things are in America, but at lest here in continental Europe, during the pandemic, the app-economy delivery shit was mostly run by befuddled immigrants. Who got absolutely screwed over what comes to fair wages. Not to mention the fact that most of the small and medium sized restaurants that had an existing delivery services basically got bullied to joining the app-economy shit. It's capitalism in it's raw form. Fuck all of these apps.

You can always emulate Call of Duty for the DS

Like 80% of the games I already play are random indie stuff. I buy maybe 1-2 new big studio games a year, and even those aren't exactly AAA. Right now, feels like big studios aren't trying hard to produce actually interesting games, just more franchise slop.

Steam machine got a solid "Oooooooo! Can't afford one right now but I'm sure keeping an eye on this one!" out of me.

I keep thinking of one of the old videos I saw.

"...I dunno, maybe we should get rid of all of the landlords!"

"But who would we then pay rent to?"

I was, like, holy shit, things are so much more complicated than I even realised, everything is based on some dumb suppositions or some shit.

Basically, if you, as a regular user, cannot unmount a device, you can usually just go to root shell (sudo -i), see where the thing is mounted (just use mount) and then unmount it (umount /media/blah/floop). If it says the device is still busy, as root you can remount it as read-only and then unmount it (seeking documentation left as an exericise to the reader, as I'm sitting at a Windows system now).

There's also lsof ("list open files") tool, which can be used to see which exact programs are using files on that device, which you can then use to kill those sneaky processes (ps, kill).

From now on, our airplane navigation systems will be based on the Flat Earth model. This makes navigation so much more computationally efficient, guys."

For 99% of computer users, if the GUI doesn’t have an option, it doesn’t exist.

Literally 99% of Windows tech support is

Have you right clicked on Windows menu, selected Terminal (Admin), then entered sfc /scannow and then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth? ...ohhh shit you're still fucked up - well, maybe you need to completely reinstall windows, well, here's the page on how to do it.

That's the difference with Linux. Your average user never uses terminal, and when they do, they find the tools suck.
