For all its faults, one thing I deeply value about Lemmy is the lack of ridicule even when sharing the most niche and out-there interests and hobbies.
The lack of ridicule continues to astound me. I recently made a post asking about Linux, as I'm 50 and know/knew jack all about it. Not only was I not ridiculed to death about my ignorance, but there seemed to be actual joy people showed in getting to inform/educate. I love this.

Role models
My father didn't bother in my life til I was 25. My stepda , the first one, was an abusive piece of shit. A neighbour guy took it on himself to be a father figure for me,and damn he did good. Second person I came out too. His reaction? Tears, a hug, and dinner. Damn I miss him.

Worked in a Waffle House 28 years ago. Never had a murder, but did have a rape, beating, two football fan crashouts and a drunk guy yelling at the menu for being disrespectful to his invisible wife. Gods I will never unsee any of that. Worse, I never got tipped. Layer moved to a more dangerous gig : Steak N Shake cook.

One of my biggest beliefs came from Star Trek : IDIC, or Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. The idea that one homogeneous whole is not only undesirable but simply wrong has shaped damn near everything about me.
