I think they missed another important piece of the pizzle, pushback by boomers and Gen X in particular who despise a world that's cleaner, quieter, lower medical coat, less pollution, less CO2 and they want less greenspace and more asphalt and concrete.

Not to car brains. They don't understand the danger they pose to cyclists and pedestrians.
Proof: Ride a bike in any urban setting for more than ten minutes.
Not for people who don't own or ride a bike
I mean... A lot of people don't own at ride a bike because they see it as unsafe..
I don't understand why cities can't change some of their inner metro road system (eg. convert some roads to one way etc.) and use the other lane for e-bike and scooter traffic. That way we keep them clear of pedestrians but clean up and quieten the inner city area.
Can confirm - I am Gen X and I despise a world that's cleaner, quieter, lower medical coat, less pollution, and less CO2.
I disagree with the source of the pushback and would blame NIMBYs who don't want lesser cycling infrastructure to replace their precious car access.
