As I understand it, the main process that reduces atmospheric CO₂ (other than the ocean, which is more of a reserve than a sink) is when it reacts with silicon/silica in the rocks, which is more or less a constant process, though increased frequency of things like landslides can increase it. Most of the CO₂ that gets used by plant life is just temporary until animal or microbial life converts it back to CO₂ for energy.

At least that's how I understand it. Though if you mean greenhouse gases in general, maybe it's extra methane being produced by the cow's digestive process rather than going straight to CO₂?

Yeah, I did some more reading about it and if I'm understanding correctly, the main issues are from the machines involved in the process (eg, fertilizer production chain, farm machines used to plant, grow, harvest, and process the feed crops, transport of the feed and the animals) and the carbon being converted to and released as methane from the cows themselves.

Chickens and pigs aren't as bad because they convert their calories to meat more efficiently and chickens don't release as much methane from their digestive process (not sure about pigs, didn't dig that far).

Land use is another issue, though that's more for biodiversity than climate change. Though all the land that used to be forests did contain some of the carbon, even if it was just temporary, new trees would replace the old in forests but that doesn't happen in pastures.

I think that the people trying to call out slop are doing more to hurt those competing with AI than AI itself.

Like someone using AI to produce stuff might get annoyed at being called out but then will probably just think "ok, gotta prompt it to avoid these signs" or waits for a newer model or just dgaf that people notice it's AI.

But people producing their own things and being accused of it being AI must feel pretty fucking discouraged that not only do they need to compete with something that can output things in a fraction of the time, but even when they do, some people accuse them of being what they hate.

For text content, IMO it should be taken based on what is said rather than who (or what) said it. If it's useless slop, there will be things to push back on other than the formatting. Plus, it wouldn't surprise me if you could just add "format it like a low effort forum post" to the prompt to get it to avoid some of the more obvious formatting tells.

Also, if people religiously call out AI slop when they see it, that could be used to automate training similar to what I'm sure happened to drastically improve programming capabilities, which will accelerate the speed at which they can become indistinguishable from things produced by real people.

Economics get in the way, too. As demand for beef for ethical or environmental reasons go down, that just reduces the optimal price for beef, which means those who would have bought more but didn't because of the price can now buy more of it.

Not saying this is a reason to not reduce your beef consumption, just that the system is so complex and the results are delayed (farmers need to guess how many calves are worth raising for beef/dairy vs just turning to veal long before any of that meat will make it to market, and those calves are getting made either way because that's how the dairy industry works: milk requires pregnancy).

Yeah, all the stupid "recommended" shit the algorithms added to my feeds eventually made it pretty easy to break the fb/insta scrolling habit. Fb was the place where I went to see what was up with people I knew and interact with them. Their comment setup is even worse than reddit for "anything you say is lost in the noise", so attempts at discussion were useless, though even if it was setup better, the quality of the comments themselves was like YouTube comment level.

Even more annoying, in addition to adding random shit to your feed, they also seemed to filter the list of friends they showed updates from to a small list that I have no idea how they even selected them. So I'd still end up missing life updates from some people if I didn't go to their profile.
