What movie would you suggest on either side of the below question?
My black co-worker asked me today to reccomend him a white people movie, and he'd give me a black people movie.
At first I reccomended Live Die Repeat (also known as Edge of Tomorrow) then remembered Wes Anderson exists and said anything by him maybe.
He reccomended Salt and The Tourist. I intend to watch them on the weekend.

Winter's Bone
I guess it depends on what kind of white people movie.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Oh that's pretty damn white.
So white it’s British
Only my whitest friends emphatically recommend this movie and make any references to it. I don't think I've ever met a non-white person who's watched it. If they have, they never bring it up!
I will watch anything made by Monty Python.
White people movie: Death at a Funeral (2007)
Black people movie: Death at a Funeral (2010)
Bonus fun: Peter Dinklage plays the same character in both.
For a white movie, I'd recommend Office Space from 1999. It's one of my all time favorites
White Chicks. Then you’ve got both bases covered.
White Men Can't Jump may cover both bases as well. :)
I've gotten that answer a lot in person too. I totally agree. 😂
Sorry To Bother You is an amazing movie with a scene that will make any white person uncomfortable (in a good way). Bonkers cast too.
I love that movie so fucking much. It saddens me that I will never again experience the thrill of watching it with a white person (many white people in fact) in a movie theatre. I'm not sure I'd want to because it made me feel physically ill but what a thrill.
Somehow that movie was aytoplaying while I was asleep. I woke up at the very end when the symptoms show. I was thoroughly confused but intrigued.
Even with the context of the rest of the movie, that ending was completely out of left field.
I didn't even realize i was watching the same movie until I watched almost the whole thing. Amazon would do that though.
I think Titanic is probably the whitest movie ever made. couldn't tell you what a black movie would be.
What makes it white in particular? I'd argue it's the #1 movie for women. White would imply white men love it too.
If women love it, men are are telling their partners they do too.
Dolemite or probably anything Tyler Perry
Any Medea movie?
Malcom X?
Steel Magnolias is the whittest movie ever made.
Maybe some white apologist shit like El Torino for a guy. That's a pretty good one.
Watched both with my Asian wife.
"Really! That's exactly how women in Mississippi are!"
She loved Grand Torino as well. (That's what you meant, right?)
Grand Torino! That's the one!
How about Casablanca? It's black and white.
White: The LOTR original trilogy
Black: Coming to America, They Cloned Tyrone, Get Out (gave 3 movies since the trilogy is technically 3 movies)
Bonus
Asian: Kung Fu Hustle, Old Boy (very dark thriller warning), Spirited Away
Hispanic: Instructions Not Included, Coco, Pan's Labyrinth
I'd be quite irritated if I offered to "trade" movies with someone and I gave them an 80 minute comedy and was told to watch a 12+ hour trilogy, lol. They are indeed white movies though.
Source: half-white LotR nerd
White people movie: Cruel Intentions (incredibly privileged and wealthy people being horrible to each other for no reason other than they can)
Black people movie: His House (South Sudanese refugees adapting to their new lives in England experiencing racism and hostility, oh and their house is haunted)
I watch a lot of horror movies. Highly recommend His House for anyone who hasn't seen it, regardless of race.
The whitest film I've ever seen is Christopher Guest's Best in Show (2000).
I don't think you can outdo John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood (1991), but I think the most universally agreed upon movie that black people enjoy is actually Love and Basketball (2000).
I'd argue that A Mighty Wind is even whiter.
I would argue the yuppie couple alone puts Best in Show as the whiter movie
The folk music in A Mighty Wind may be greater than the Swans' screen time. And that music is extremely white.
But the meltdown over Busy Bee can definitely count for double.
The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz.
My vote for the whitest movie of all time is Metropolitan (1990). I enjoyed it, but i feel embarrassed recommending it. From Wikipedia:
1990 film by Whit Stillman
Metropolitan is a 1990 American romantic comedy-drama film produced, written and directed by Whit Stillman, in his feature directorial debut. The film concerns the lives of a group of wealthy young socialites during debutante season in Manhattan. In addition to some of their debutante parties, it covers their frequent informal after-hours gatherings at a friend's Upper East Side apartment, where they discuss life, philosophy and their fate; form attachments, romances and intrigues; and react to an interesting but less well-to-do newcomer.
Quick facts Directed by, Written by ...
Metropolitan was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 63rd Academy Awards.[4] The film is often considered the first of a trilogy of Stillman films set in the 1980s and portraying privileged young adults, followed chronologically by The Last Days of Disco (1998) and Barcelona (1994).[5]
White movie: The Princess Bride
Black movie: Poetic Justice. Also, since the holidays are coming up, The Holiday and The Best Man.
Also, your coworker likes Angelina Jolie and that's all their picks mean. It's like they didn't even understand the question
Oh god this coworker is a lot of fun but he kinda way off in right-field most of the time mentally.
The Grand Budapest Hotel. Whitest feeling movie I've seen.
Well, it depends.
Die Hard and Caddyshack come to mind as white people movies.
I actually forgot that I said Die Hard first but he'd seen it. 😂 Caddyshack is I think the best suggestion so far!
Uh oh. I'm starting to notice that they're ALL white movies. It's almost as if the entire industry has been dominated by a single voice since it's inception. 🤔
Inception, that's a good white people movie
Yeah. I thought it was bizarre when some people complained about a black actor playing the little mermaid. We could list Americans of northern European ancestry playing almost every other race, ethnicity and nationality without anyone blinking an eye and we could do it for days without being close to a complete list.
Braveheart is about as white as it gets.
You call the scottish rednecks "white"??
/s
Live Die Repeat is Japanese though, I don't get the "whiteness" in it, personally. IMO, some great "white people" movies, understood as Anglo-Saxon/Germanic/Nordic (else I'd have to include Spanish, French and Italian which certainly have a very different vibe), could be "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", "In Bruges" or "Master and Commander".
I'm pretty sure Fight Club is a white movie, and it's actually good, or I' maybe m just that white.
It's very white technically (cast), but its various messages speak more to class struggle and patriarchy which affect all the races, so I personally wouldn't consider it a "white movie" in the same sense as some others in this thread.
GATTACA is about class struggle while being exceptionally white about it
I never got any "antipatriarchal" vibes from Fight Club, maybe I should watch it again, lol. It did feel very "nihilistic anger and sadness that turns into violence", it made me feel like I was listening to Papa Roach or Evanescence (which are as white as art can get, and I enjoy both just for the record, I had the CDs and everything!).
Fight Club at its core is about how society fails to provide men a safety net for their emotions / personal development and instead pushes them to things like consumerism and unrealistic expectations of masculinity. This is what triggers the narrator to become nihilistic, angry, and eventually violent. The reason society is the way it is towards men is because it was set up that way by the patriarchy to keep them in their societal place and so that capitalism can keep capitalizing.
There's lots of articles about it (and how its so often misunderstood). I'd also recommend the book, as the different ending drives the point home in a different way imo.
Interesting point about evanecessence (JFC what a word to spell). I get more depression rather than anger from them lol
I agree with everything in your first paragraph up until the last sentence! But I don't wanna start a long argument (which happens to me often... I'm starting to think I'm the reason 🙃) and hijack the thread, if that's okay. I'll definitely read the lit hub article though, and thanks for the comprehensive reply. 👍
I think I'd still say it's a white movie. It's about masculinity, consumerism, and class which are universal challenges, but it looks at them through the lens of how they impact white men.
To me, the most white people movie ever is Marley and Me...As for adult movies, maybe Eyes Wide Shut?
Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick's attempt at exposing the Epstein Class. Look up the history on the castle where they filmed it.
You're so right. I feel like Marley and me so perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the pre-2008 recession white middle-class psyche.
white men can't jump

pootie tang
Blacula
Black Dynamite
Good call on Friday!
A white movie: The Men Who Stare at Goats
A black movie: Green Book
White: Harold and Maude.
Black: I Love Boosters.
I have only ever met one other person who knows what Harold and Maude is.
I am not really sure what is "white" and "black" movies, but I was born in Vilnius, Lithuania myself, with "white" skin color if that makes sense.
In this case, I had around 30 titles in the mind for the "white", but for some reason, the first 5 that I recalled and imagined was:
- Run Lola Run (1998);
- Suicide Room (2011);
- The Place Beyond the Pines (2012);
- The Book Thief (2013);
- Head Full of Honey" (2018);
Salt and tourists are excellent movies not sure how those fall under black peoples movies though
Hackers, The Matrix, Ferris Bueller, Risky Business
Bonus: Abre los Ojos is the Spanish precursor of Vanilla Sky
Which The Tourist?
Probably not the Johnny Depp movie.
Yep, that one.
that was his "black people" movie recommendation?
As I am not black I don't know if he's right really, but I do know anyone can be wrong.
I'm not sure I understand what you both meant by white people or black people movies. If I'm getting the correct titles, it looks like both movies he recommended star Angelina Jolie (and incidentally both released in 2010). They don't appear to have any prominent black characters in them, but I could be mistaken. Why are those black people movies? Because black people enjoy them?
The following question or the question below.
Adjective order matters.
Literally everyone here, including you, knew what OP said, so clearly it doesn't.
English, MF, do you speak it?!
