I'm on Windows and I often receive photos from iPhones in the HEIC format. Though I can convert them, it's annoying to have to do that just to view the dang photo. Is there a FOSS program that can open them without converting them? Something like VLC which pretty much handles all video formats.
I've tried downloading the HEIF Image Extension but that does absolutely nothing.
My dad passed away recently and I have his iPhone. His estranged wife is the primary holder of his phone plan and has marked the phone as lost. He was planning to divorce her after a messy breakup but passed away before he could.
I just wanted to back up the photos in the phone but can't access it at all.
Aside from asking her to unlock the phone, do I have any other options to access his photos? I doubt she'd unlock it since she knows I have the phone and marked it as missing anyway.

I'm a long time Windows user looking to switch to Linux. One of my most used apps is Phone Link, which I use to make/receive calls and texts through my desktop. It's a lot easier on my hands, which have limited endurance, and typing is a lot easier on my keyboard than my phone.
With my limited research, I saw that KDE Connect almost fits the bill, except it doesn't sync phone calls.
Is there a Linux app with all the functionality of Windows Phone Link?
Wanted to get a new phone since my S20 is starting to show its age. And with all the enshitification of Android lately I thought it'd be good to try a different phone OS.
However, I don't really want to buy a Google Pixel so GrapheneOS is a no go. I was really interested in the Fold 7 but it seems that will not be possible to get without Android. Thought DivestOS was good but it looks like support ended in 2024.
What other phone OS are people using?
There's currently a sale on the Western Digital website. I was thinking of getting the Red Pros since they're high capacity and relatively quiet. In a previous post I made on the datahoarders community, I was looking for an HDD that was basically silent since the NAS will be next to my desk where I WFH.
Currently, two 18 TB drives are going for $620 or about $17.22 per TB. Not the best deal but definitely better than their normal price. I know a lot of people like buying used drives but the ones for sale are usually loud enterprise edition drives which won't work for me. Should I buy the drives now or wait until BF for a possibly better sale?

When I try using the https://<IP_ADDRESS_OF_YOUR_PI_HOLE>/admin/ I get search results to access my router login. (I obviously replace the link with my pihole's IP address but I still get router login results)
Accessing through pi.hole/admin or pi.hole usually works but I keep having trouble connecting to the site. Checked downforeveryoneorjustme.com and it looks like pi.hole is down. Has this happened to anyone before? Do I just wait for the site to go back up?
I bought a used point and shoot recently so that I could be more mindful to not only take pictures more often but also to take better quality pictures.
I noticed that since everyone has a smartphone, people have been less likely to take photos and videos and people get annoyed when they are photographed/recorded. I think part of that is because those photos and videos get uploaded to social media where everyone can see/judge.
I wanted to try to take more photos of family events though since it was always fun to look through old photos of family members. I grew up in the 90s and 00s when it was really common to have photos taken at every event. Though I I haven't uploaded any of my photos yet, I've definitely taken more pictures than I ever had prior to having a camera. (I plan to buy a NAS hard drive during black Friday so I can store my photos privately.)
It sucks that good point and shoots are basically discontinued. I paid almost double the msrp for my camera and it was used and made in 2018. If you're able to find some good point and shoots for a good price, I would highly recommend you trying it out.
Looking to upgrade my NAS hard drives. Currently have two 4TB WD Red Plus hard drives but I wanted to get some large capacity drives. Was looking into getting 16 or 18TB drives. My current drives are basically whisper quiet and have been running great since 2019 but I feel like it's time to upgrade the capacity.
The NAS is currently on a desk beside my computer. I don't have any cabinets to place it in and would prefer not to connect to it through Wi-Fi. Hence why I'd like for the drives to be as quiet as possible.
I was considering getting a Seagate Exos or Ironwolf (and buying used for the great price) but I've read users online saying they regret buying those models because of their noise. I was also looking at the WD Red Pro but WD's own website only rates them at 3.6/5 with most of the negative complaints about dead on arrival drives. Additionally 25% of all reviews are 1 star; both of which don't fill me with much confidence.
TLDR: What's a quiet and reliable hard drive recommendation for a NAS?
Would it be better just to go with the WD Red Plus at a lower capacity?
I purchased a 2022 ROG Zephyrus G14 around Christmas 2023. It had some issues with the screen being blank on boot but rebooting it once or twice did the trick. I should have known that was a bad sign.
After less than 1.5 years, it got stuck in a boot loop after trying to update the graphics driver. After unsuccessfully trying to restore it to factory settings, I took it to my local Microcenter for diagnosis. They're listed by Asus as the only certified repair shop in my area.
It seems the motherboard has died and would cost more than what I paid for it to replace. The tech also said this is a common issue with this model. A quick search online shows I'm not the only one with this problem.
TLDR: A bad experience with the 2022 G14 makes me want to avoid ROG and Asus for a while. Any recommendations for a similarly sized gaming laptop? I like the Legion 5 Slim 14. 5" laptop but can't find it anywhere outside ebay and with this experience, I'd prefer something with a warranty.
I had some memory foam earbud tips from Comply for my IEMs but I found that they would become too squishy or fall off the casing too easily. Which was a shame because brand new they feel amazing.
What are some of your favorite tips for IEMs? Looking to purchase some higher quality cushions.

He saw my stepsister's PSP and was interested in it but she wanted to keep it.

I've got a lot of devices that need to plug into an outlet at my desk. Right now, I have 2 surge protectors completely full.
I wanted to get a smart surge protector to auto turn off/on devices I don't want left on all the time (ex: speakers, monitor, DAC/AMP, printer). But the smart surge protectors have fewer outlets than my current one.
My question is, how do you manage your outlets when you have a lot of devices that need to be plugged in? I don't want to have 3 surge protectors plugged into the wall. I'm already drawing a lot of power in my home office with my mini fridge also plugged in (on the opposite side of the room).
I've also heard of something called UPS. Would that be better than plugging it into a surge protector?

I'm looking to replace my old Netgear Nighthawk with a new router. Currently my house does have some dead zones which we make up for using a powerline. But the powerline isn't always stable and we have to switch wifi networks depending on where we are in the house.
My question is, is it better to get a mesh network or a standard router with either range extenders (ex: TP-Link OneMesh) or mesh features (ex: Asus AiMesh)? I couldn't really find any article that listed the differences between mesh routers and standard routers with extendable features. They only compare mesh routers with standard routers.

Preferably, I would like to go with the standard router for the higher speeds and extra ports but I'm afraid that won't solve our dead zone issues. Also, buying two or three standard routers is way more expensive than a mesh network with multiple satellites.
Speed and signal strength are important for me since both I and my brother WFH and do online gaming. Unfortunately, the home office (where the router is) and bedrooms (where we game and where my brother works) are on opposite sides of the house. Another note is that when the garage opens, my brother loses signal in his room for some reason. I haven't experienced that despite being closer to the garage than him
