for magas, the healthcare isn't the bad part, it's the "everyone" that makes them furious

It’s the old “why should I pay for someone else’s healthcare???”.

They’re too dumb to realize everyone else helps pay for their healthcare.

"Why should I pay for someone else's healthcare?"

Because one day, someone will pay your healthcare you absolutely rotten piece of shit.

Like their children that for some reason won't visit or call during the holidays.

My wife works in long term care and I can say this: the more "conservative" inmates get visited significantly less than your "liberal" ones...

I know no one on Lemmy likes Jubilee and I don't either, but I still watch it every now and again.

Last month there was a Gen Z politician vs Boomers and one of the old guys was talking about how student loan forgiveness shouldn't be done. The politician says you won't feel it. The Boomer said, they would because of the numbers of the ledger, politician says you'll feel it due to the all the people being able to contribute to the economy properly and giving it a huge boost. Boomer says him or his wife had their loans forgiven and it was a huge help, but that not everyone should get it.

Man, these fucking people.

Jubilee is a conservative channel, that pretends to be on "both sides" they showed thier true colors when they host conservatives, magats , and even charlie kirk, to debate "woke" people, usually its 20 people vs the left all the time.

The BBC, perhaps. Still conservative, but compared to some US networks they're practically three Lenin's in a trenchcoat

One day?! The entire point of health insurance is that millions of other people are paying to help you pay for your healthcare

25
piefed.social

And then a random dude in the middle takes a cut while providing no actual service.

18
protistreply
retrofed.com

The entire health insurance industry is built around taking a cut. Literally every single person who works for United Healthcare, BCBS, Aetna, and Humana is being paid by money the health insurance company took from you and is not using to provide healthcare. Not only that, but hospitals dedicate entire departments to battling health insurance companies for authorization for treatment. All that money could be redirected toward actually providing healthcare.

24

Healthcare should NEVER be private, it should always be public, with a progressive price (people below a given income and/or heritage threshold should not pay, people above that threshold should pay but in a percentage equivalent to their income and heritage, so the richest pay, proportionally, more than the poorest, instead of it being regressive and the poorest paying proportionally less than the richest), universal, democratic and decentralized.

And I mean, that goes for any socialized benefit, and it should be like that with taxes too, and even with individual goods and services. It simply doesn't make sense that the ones that have the less, have to pay the more.

6
lemmy.world

Hell, we all pay for other people's healthcare now! When people go to the emergency room and can't afford to pay, the hospitals crank up the cost of everyone else's healthcare to make up for it. We have literally the least cost effective system possible.

17

Common misconception. You're paying for other people's healthcare, yes; plus the salaries of insurance agents, plus the commissions for insurance brokers, plus the bonuses for healthcare execs, plus the yacht money for healthcare investors, plus the bribe funds used by lobbyists, plus the apocalypse island money for the handful of people who own it all.

I'm probably forgetting a few. Like probably more being spend on private security now too for some reason.

8
pawb.social

I have a friend whom I have this argument with frequently, not about health care specifically but other socialized benefits (e.g. SNAP). He's even a leftist, but still thinks he shouldn't have to pay for people who "take advantage of the system" (e.g. spend their SNAP benefits on things he doesn't believe should qualify, or receive SNAP benefits while spending their 'real' money on things he considers non-essential).

The fact that there are corporations getting orders of magnitude more in handouts, or that we're spending an unreal amount of money on the military, or that there's unfathomable amounts of corruption in the government, and that those benefits are in actuality a tiny fraction of what his taxes go to, makes no difference. He doesn't want people at the bottom to get an ounce more than he believes they strictly need or deserve, and I cannot for the life of me understand that line of thought.

42

"I'd rather 99 people get support they might not need if it means one person gets the support they definitely need."

I've used that reasonably successfully.

26
lemmy.world

A while back, I was listening to a podcast that apparently had a fairly sizable conservative Christian audience, because there were a good number of ads for Christian "Health Care Sharing Ministries," into which subscribers pay a voluntary "share," and from which they draw when they need it.

I don't remember the specific language the ad used, but I do remember it saying something that sounded almost dangerously close to "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need." I started laughing at that one.

19
piefed.zip

There's a Fundamental Christian influencer named Aria Lewis who has that "insurance". She's been dealing with dental problems and basically made a post one day asking her followers if that insurance was a scam because she wasn't able to get the care she really needed

It's crazy what problems people fall into when they choose something has "Christian" in the name over what everyone else is using

10
lemmy.world

Agreed 100%. Even as a Christian myself, I avoid businesses with "Christian" in the name. At best it feels like they're trying to say that they're the "Jesus-y" choice. At worst it means they're crooks trying to look legitimate. In either case they're probably maga.

7
piefed.zip

The one that breaks my heart is the Christian counseling services, which are so often not true therapy. There are absolutely licensed therapists out there who are Christian and can advertise that. Just hate watching people who have serious mental health problems go to counseling and hating themselves because prayer isn't usually enough to help.

I'm a firm believer that if there is a God, he provided the tools and people to help his flock deal with modern problems. But people often turn away from using these tools or services :(

2

I'm a firm believer that if there is a God, he provided the tools and people to help his flock deal with modern problems. But people often turn away from using these tools or services :(

One of the most clear expressions of how I feel about such things is 411 years old:

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them."

It was originally written by Galileo Galilei, and it's still as relevant now as it was then. This was made into a satire with the joke about the man on a rooftop during a flood who rejects a helicopter, a boat, and a raft, saying that "God will save me;" and who, after drowning, confronts God at the gates of Heaven, who answers his complaints, "I sent you a helicopter, a boat, and a raft, what more did you want?" The fact that something is available to believer and nonbeliever alike should be a cause for rejoicing, not for distrust.

Theologically speaking, God gave us sense, reason, and intellect; not the devil. Trained therapists and mental health professionals are gifts of God, whether they're Christians or not. And, going back to healthcare for all, another gift of God is community; and being able to help one another as a group. But the conservative Christians have been hoodwinked by rich con men into believing that that's socialism, and that mental health is wokeness.

Makes my blood boil.

2

dental insurance is kinda of a scam, if you are not using an employer-sponsered one, they dont cover most things outside of cleanings. the ones i looked from the 3 well known dental insurance, have approximately the same kind of coverage for all 3 plans, the only difference some of them are more expensive. Employer- sponsored plans have very different coverage from the individual plans.

i like how they rail about dental/health insurance as a scam, while they use a more expensive version which is likely paying the full cost of dental care. i would imagine the fund would drain pretty fast if people are getting multiple cavities filled, and not even for other things like extractions, root canal and crowns, or periodontal care, or implants.

I ALSO notice some dental offices, offer thier own "insurance" in house, may or may not be expensive but that could be another avenue if people dont want to pay for better insurance.

My parents are the most MAGA-pilled, Evangelical, racist, sexist, etc., folks you'll find. Fully on board with all of the 'conservative' messaging, and have been their entire lives. They fully think that Communism is some existential threat...

They're also poor. My mom never held down a full time job in her life. Her husband was a Janitor. They live in a community of other like-minded poor people that are close-knit and trade goods, labor, and services to help each other out. Its a while network where people come together to met each other's needs. My mom grows food in her garden and will trade it for chicken eggs. Her husband will use his tractor to help someone grade a road, and get 'paid' in meat by someone who raises cattle, etc. Its a wonderful system and they and their network of friends working within this system are literally communists.

No matter how I've tried to point that out, there is NO getting through the propaganda they've spent their lives bathing in. Its baffling.

3

Oh, absolutely. People from the church I grew up in sometimes say such baffling things about socialism and communism. I want to tell them, "know how I learned about social economies? From Sunday afternoon pitch-in dinners. Even though there was going to be food there, people who could bring food still brought it! We all ate until we were sick, there was food left over, and it all tasted fantastic. Sure, we had to cut Elaine's chess pie extra thin so that everyone could get a slice, but there was literally a vat of mashed potatoes and two whole turkeys."

2

so every time he says he doesn’t want to pay for people taking advantage of the system, ask if he means the wealthy people denying healthcare to people so they can afford more yachts, their 8th mansion, their 30th sport car, their second helicopter. Because he’s overpaying for his private healthcare so they can take advantage of him.

The Democrats are just as fascist:

  1. Biden/Harris had the entire Epstein file suite and did absolutely nothing with it
  2. Obama/Biden built the policy power to do the mass deportations and city-deployments of ICE that Trump is now using
  3. Biden knew this and changed literally nothing about it when he was president
  4. Obama/Biden deported more people than Trump has
  5. Obama/Biden appointed Tom Homan as deportation czar - same guy Trump appointed in both terms
  6. Biden/Harris deported/repatriated over 4M in only 4 years
  7. Biden/Harris participated in the Israeli-led genocide of Gaza
  8. Obama refused to provide arms to Ukraine. Trump was the first president ever to approve arms transfers to Ukraine.
  9. Obama/Biden + HRClinton continued the Bush2 strategic plan for destroying 7 countries by completely destroying Libya, laughing at the public torture and execution of a 70-year-old man sodomized with a blade by people the HRC State Dept coordinated
  10. 800k people, on average, have died every year for the last 50 years due to US sanctions, and both parties are totally OK with it.

We could keep going, back to Clinton and the Biden-authored Crime Bill, back to every war and military action, to the School of the Americas and the training of death squads and terrorists. We can go through and show how these programs were continuous across party switches in every part of the government. We can show how every mass movement of people for self-liberation and self-governance was met with mass murder at the hands of the USA regardless of which party was in charge. We can show how the USA was the model used for EuroFascism and how the USA absorbed and protected the failed EuroFascists and then spread them around the world for decades with their protection, bi-partisanly.

The USA is the global reservoir of fascism, which, of course it is, because the USA is the torchbearer, inheritor, executor, and protector of EuroImperialism, which is what EuroFascism fundamentally is.

-16
lemmy.world

The crazy thing is, I actually agree with you about your list, and that the US has told a fairy tale for the past two and a half centuries about how we're the good guys and they're the bad guys, and so forth. But then

The Democrats are just as fascist

is just laughable in pretty much every conceivable way. Are they still bad? Yes! But have they sent a secret police around the country to tear "undesirables" out of their homes and send them to countries they've never been without due process? Are they currently plotting to overthrow the election or stay in power despite losing that election? Did they, in the past two years, allow an unelected billionaire to destroy entire government agencies by fiat?

Ah-ah-ah! I hear you saying "but they voted to approve ICE funding" or "but they didn't do anything to stop any of it" or "but Obama deported a bunch of people too" or "Democratic gerrymandering"—no. I didn't ask if they allowed it to happen. I didn't ask for whatabouts. I asked if they were behind the worst, most criminal activities being perpetrated by the US government at this very moment. I asked if they are doing it now. Are they the prime movers?

No? Then you can't say "just as fascist." That might've been true ten years ago---actually, aside from the election fraud, it almost definitely was---and I could maybe even see an argument that their evil was in the same order of magnitude as recently as two years ago, but equating the two since Trump 2 is like comparing a viper bite to a meteor entering the atmosphere. They're both imminently dangerous, sure, but the difference in the scale of damage would be almost laughable if the harm wasn't currently in progress.

The country needs to be fixed. I don't think the Democrats are going to do it. But I'm not going to do anything to aid the people who are going to make it more broken, so I'm going to leave off turning on people who will be on our team until after the existential threat to our loved ones and ourselves is past.

5

You're making an attribution mistake. The DNC and RNC are PR firms that get people elected and manipulate the population through storytelling. Elected from both parties collaborate together to run the government of the USA.

Yes, Obama/Biden actually did create the policies necessary to deploy ICE inside US cities that Trump is using. But why didn't Obama/Biden deploy them in that way? Because it's off-brand. They created the conditions collaboratively with the Republicans, but they stayed within their narrative roles. They were no less fascist, you're just choosing to draw an arbitrary line around what fascism is, and you happen to be choosing it around what makes white middle class people uncomfortable. Obama's drone strike expansion was insanely fascist, but you didn't have to experience fear because of it. Biden's management of the border was no less fascist, but you didn't have to see it. Trump's use of Obama's ICE is a narrative shock, but by the raw numbers it is less effective. Why? If Trump was such an evil fascist, why wouldn't he absolutely dwarf Obama's numbers and Biden's numbers? Because Trump is playing a narrative role when he uses shock and awe.

And let me tell you, shock and awe is not what makes something fascist. Deliberately targeting weddings, funerals, and double tapping them with unmanned bomber jets is just as fascist, or more so, then deporting people loudly.

Did the Democrats plot to overthrow the elections? Narratively, no. Functionally, yes. If the Republicas so obviously did so, then what else can you possibly call Biden's total inaction except tacit approval? He had the Epstein files in hand, he had a whole dog and pony show of an investigation, the SCOTUS said that the sitting president was immune from prosecution in carrying out the duties of the office even if that meant doing something totally illegal and Biden said "you know what, the voters will save us"? No. That's not credible. The Democrats spent a massive amount of time and effort to make us feel a certain way and absolutely zero effort in stopping what they claimed was an existential threat that literally targeted our ability to vote. So how the fuck are the voters going to solve this? They already voted in a D administration and they did fucking nothing to stop the threat. So we're supposed to vote them in again because this time they will stop threat? It's so obviously bullshit.

Did they, in the past two years, allow an unelected billionaire to destroy entire government agencies by fiat?

That's not fascism. That's factionalism. The faction that Trump is the figurehead for did that and dismantled the operations that other factions relied on. They were all factions of fascism, but even within fascism there are factions. Musk destroying e.g. USAID was an intra-fascist conflict, which is easy to see when you understand that the good things USAID did were cover for all of the covert CIA operations they facilitated.

The Democrats are not on your team. They are not trying to fight the Republicans. They are co-managing the fascist empire and a large part of that is narrative control. The fascists aren't stupid. They can't win if they only act evil and overtly. They have to both ham it up for their base (R) and they also need to co-opt any opposition they will face (D).

You’re already paying for everyone else’s healthcare. Medicare for all would just make it cheaper and simpler.

What do you think happens when somebody walks into a hospital with no insurance? Do they just turn them away? No. Who do you think pays for that? You do. It’s paid for in the markup of your hospital bill.

20

Also, private insurance is still 'paying for other people's healthcare'.

10
adarzareply

there's usually a 'process' and qualifications to get the bill covered by whatever 'community care' program the facility has.

they will absolutely produce an invoice and expect payment or 'arrangements' upon discharge (which could include application for community care benefit).

they will also absolutely send that billing to a collections agency as well. one of the hospitals near me sends a lot of their uninsured or underinsured billing that would never qualify for assistance to collections without making more than a token effort to get paid first.. my boss even had a message on their home voice mail waiting for her when she got home from having an outpatient procedure done.

It's even more stupid than that. They're not even paying for their own healthcare. If you arrive in hospital and need several million pounds worth of medical treatment, there's no quibbling about whether or not you paid that much in they just get on with it.

The vast majority of people who suddenly require major surgery you actually pay considerably less over the course of a life paying via taxes then you ever would pay for private healthcare, also because it's the government just funding itself they don't make random numbers up when it comes to billing, it costs what it cost.

I don't think it's that. Or at least not always that. I've met plenty of boomers that think they worked hard and earned their healthcare and it's unfair that others would get it for "free". They're so brainwashed into tying healthcare to their jobs instead of it just being a human right.

What they did was make it a punishable offense to not have health care. That is very very different. They aren't giving a product that are forcing you to buy a product.

10

mroe than welcome to have a single pay and regulated private insurer, like canada maybe?

1

And? That’s still not single payer car insurance.

Also owning & operating a vehicle is a privilege whereas living & receiving medical care, should be, a right.

3

to be fair car insurance should be required, because cars are potentially very dangerous, and the cost to infrastructure and people is very high if damage was incurred. also certain areas will have even higher rates than surrounding areas due to the demographics that are likely to cause accidents or collisions. thats why its important to invest in public transport more, like HSR, this will totally eliminate the need for cars in many areas.

Except it's not a single payer health system is it? It's just giving corporations even more money and therefore power.

I've been on phone calls with the hospital, the insurance company, the doctor, and the hospital billing office (separate from the hospital and unable to communicate with it for some reason) for well over a year.

My insurance company assured me that it would be taken care of. They then closed the case and opened at least one other internal case where they say it's not being taken care of.

I pay over 10k out of my paycheck to cover my family. That's before we hit the 4k family deductible and still have to pay 20% on most services.

Here's the part I don't understand.

In 2025, approximately 22 million Americans received subsidies through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace to help pay for their health insurance. That's millions of working Americans who depend on these subsidies to afford coverage.

So who exactly is this statement supposed to appeal to? A significant number of Trump's own constituents rely on healthcare.gov to purchase their health insurance. Without those subsidies, many of them are going to face the same financial reality I would.

Without my subsidy, my health insurance would cost approximately $1,800 a month. That's $21,600 a year just to have health insurance, before paying a single dollar in deductibles or copays.

That's absolute insanity.

24

When Trump uses words like "we" and makes speeches, he is only referring to his donors and henchmen.

We aren't even a thought for him, not even his cult

Voting against your own interests is a common thing that happens in democracies.

3

Man... Yeah, you're absolutely right. That really is a matter of perspective.

I think what I struggle to understand is how people can intentionally vote against their own interests under the guise of familiarity. Have people genuinely been conditioned to believe that things that benefit society as a whole, and them as individuals, are somehow detrimental to them personally, while those same policies are somehow detrimental to the profits of large corporations?

I don't know, man. It's difficult to wrap my head around how effectively people can be convinced to work against their own interests.

Humans are terrible.

So who exactly is this statement supposed to appeal to?

Left leaning voters specifically. He knows Democrats won't be able to bring forth Universal Healthcare in a term or maybe even 2. It's just to rile leftists and set up Democrats for a failure he knows they won't be able to commit to.

2
lemmy.world

So he's conceding that Republicans are going to lose the elections this year and he wants to throw egg into the face of Democrats when they don't provide universal healthcare?

That's... No. No man. Leftists have nothing to do with any of this.

It's something close to 80% of all Americans have their insurance either provided for them through Medicare and Medicaid or the workplace the other 20% is mostly through the healthcare act and the others are paying for themselves or don't have it at all.

The extreme vast majority of the people that he is referring to already have some form of healthcare assistance nobody is going to buy this.

So who is he saying this to? Who's supposed to look at this and go oh my God not free healthcare!?

1
MortUSreply

he wants to throw egg into the face of Democrats when they don’t provide universal healthcare?

Yes, absolutely. That's just the kind of person he has been so far. Ignorant leftists blame Democrats for not backing Universal Healthcare, DJT points out that that's a possibility if Democrats get majority (which is absolutely is not), it's a simple ploy is all. DJT throws things at the wall constantly to see what sticks.

Look at it creating a buzz here. Surely it's making it's rounds on Reddit, Facebook, and X as well. Unless it's a narrative that him and his cronies keep pushing, it'll be done talked about by tomorrow.

If it does end being a narrative they keep pushing, it makes Democrats look weak as it's not something they can commit to even though it's something a majority of American would want.

0

You actually make a very strong case here. You might be right, and I have to admit, it’s just crazy to me that this seemingly senile old man could be capable of such a high level of strategic thinking.

I’ve lived my entire life in this country and lived through the administrations of numerous presidents, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this. This entire administration is operating in ways that feel completely unprecedented in modern American history.

I have never seen the federal government treat immigrants with such abject disdain and discrimination. The racism and sexism are so blatant, so openly displayed, that you would think they’d be enough to turn the American people against this administration. And yet, somehow, those very things seem to energize its supporters rather than alienate them.

I genuinely hope they push things far enough that the American people finally begin to push back in a meaningful way. But then again, we’ve already seen massive protests, and it often feels like they accomplish very little. At some point, you have to wonder what it will take for people to draw a line and demand something better from their government.

It really is the "everyone" that annoys people. I've asked conservatives to explain to me how insurance works as a business model. They pretty quickly realize two things:

  1. Monthly premiums of everyone cover the needs of anyone in need today. (Some seem to think it is like a bank account, but pretty quickly realize why that doesn't make sense. Framing it around car insurance instead of healthcare tends to help if they are struggling here.)

  2. As a for profit business, they need to collect more in monthly premiums from each customer than they will provide that customer with benefits. Otherwise, the business is not profitable.

Once they understand these two facts, then they are ready to understand why government sponsored healthcare is optimal. It maximizes the number of people paying into the monthly premiums, while minimizing the profit margin because the government doesn't need to be run at a profit. Many disagree with that last point, but will usually be satisfied by phrasing it as "bringing in a minimal profit. Otherwise, we wouldn't want to be overtaxed, right?"

20

In my experience they'll understand the two facts but still arrive at the unwavering conclusion that it's still better than the government running it.

12
programming.dev

Sadly, I've had similar experiences. Some people are so indoctrinated or have had such bad experiences with corruption in other countries, they just refuse to acknowledge how it would work in the US.

Others are so committed to the identity of not letting anyone, especially the government, tell them what to do (pay taxes), but that is a dying breed in the era of MAGA and post-Covid. (I know COVID is still very much an issue for some areas, but I digress.)

My main point is that while getting someone to understand these two facts may not change their minds, their minds will not change unless they understand these 2 facts. It opens up the door to a conversation that cannot be had beforehand.

5

I can agree with that. even if we can't change their mind, they're at least finally beginning to see that corporations don't operate in the best interests of consumers.

With government helthcare there are also no "in network" and "out of network" doctors. You can simply just go to any fucking docktor you want and you don't have to worry if one of the people in the hospital is out of network and you suddenly have to pay thousands for something you had basically no control over.

This is in my opinion the biggest plus of government helthcare.

8
lemmy.world

I'm be real, and ain't nobody wanna hear this but...

Even with full health insurance, most hospitals and doctors in my 50 mile radius area either do not accept patients or are booked out to 5 months. I really think we have a educational problem that's leading to not enough qualified doctors. I also see a lot of "Nurse Practitioners" and actual MDs that are running rounds at multiple area hospitals.

Not only does DJT know that Democrats won't pass Universal Healthcare (setting them up for failure), but doing so would lead to cutting corners on actually educating qualified doctors, possibly leading to more harm than good.

IMO the bigger issue is education, planning, and prioritizing. We (as a Nation) can't go all in on Universal Healthcare without planning and prioritizing education and ensuring that our system can handle the flood of new patients.

9
lemmy.world

They are booked out, because the insurance makes them go thru mutliple loops, wasting an insane amount of time. My dentist had to make 4 separate appointments for a root canal/crown, because the insurance required proving each sub-procedure, with x-ray for each one of them, that otherwise wouldn't be required. and I could've had it done in two.

18

is your dentist charge for each appt? i had to go 3 different dentists before i was able to get a crown, after root canal, after a emergency visit, i am pay out of pocket, i mininmized the cost by using yelp, and other review sites.

The rate at which new doctors are trained in the USA has historically been bottlenecked by the number of residency program slots available. Hospitals financially benefit from each resident they employ, but not as much as they do from adding other roles, instead (such as nurses). Also, it is not trivial to create a new residency program or expand an existing one (accreditation requirements, other fixed costs, etc.). This is why 25 % of USA physicians are immigrants. The Republicans have also made it more expensive to get loans for medical school, which will discourage some people from going to med school in the future, although the insufficient supply of residency slots might still end up being the bottleneck.

But even if we did not increase the supply of doctors, moving to Single Payer would still benefit us by reducing cost. I don't think Single Payer would need to be coupled to increasing the supply of physicians.

16
MortUSreply

8

They have been purposely fucking shit up for a long time. They just keep layering more shit on so there's never a chance of any real progress.

1

nurses are making bank, they deserve it. when 2 billionaires made it free for the current students, i think columbia and one other. the schools selectively excluded less well off/wealthy students(people that can stay home all day and study) from medical school from being accepted, so it isnt an easy fix, because med school is not something you can have a job and still study, thats why most tend to be wealthy MDs or well off.

alot of the MDs in our area are asian, ME, or indians, and whites. the 4 well off demographics, black and latin ones are rare, others like indigineous are almost non-existent.

this is very similar to 2 other health programs i looked at radiology technologist, and CLS. both ahve decent high income but very small bottlenecked amount of schools that teach it. Community colleges, while very cheap have horrendous acceptance, and wait times, many years(4 years sometimes), many students find it not worth it and just get a degree instead, because they only ever accept 20-30 per semester or per year out of 20k people waiting for any number CC that teach it(lucikly is not by competition, but by a lottery system).

CLS has a same problem but reversed, low number of schools that each it, and even lower for the adjacent MLT program(that can be used to bridge the gap for a CLS program), plus everyone is trying to come to the west coast for the schools(only 9 schools in the west teach it, imagining hundreds and thousands trying to get into the program at any given semester). this ensures the salaries remain high i guess, by limiting how people and how much schools are teaching it. CLS significantly more competitive than Radio techs(because it requires alot of 4 year university classes. CLS is appealing because it is a very cheap grad program(less than 20k for the whole year), compared to something like pharmacy from a nearby university which is more than 10X the cost and 3-4times as long, but thier starting salary is very similar.

radio tech people can choose to go to a university, which has expideted acceptance, but way more expensive, also similar income levels. oh and there are shortages of cls and radio techs in general, but im guessing its on purpose so they dont lower the salaries.

I don't understand why we need a plan.

When cheif of the fire department needs more people; They hire more.

When the chief of police needs more deputies; They hire more.

When the chief of medicine needs more nurses... Wait we don't have a cheif of medicine? Hu. Werid...

10

the chief, is actually the hospital admin, think CUDDY from house, shes the 'boss" of that hospital.

2

Education isn't the bottleneck, residency is. Plenty of qualified doctors coming out of med school that don't get residency, so they have to try again next year (and compete against fresh grads).

Raising residency limits is, of course, unpopular because it means more doctors, which means less demand, so less pay to cover med school loans...and nobody wants med school to cost less. Least of all the people buying up those loans. Read: rich folk that live on investments.

The number one cause of personal bankruptcy in the USA is healthcare. At this point, what is worse, losing everything to a massive dumpster fire, US healthcare, waiting for treatment or croaking because your health insurance sucks shit.

6

The hardest part of American healthcare is buying the tickets to Europe or Mexico for the affordable operation.

7
lemmy.world

It’s something like 90% of Americans avoid going to the doctor at all if they can help it, 5 months is a lot less time then never. Also demand drives supply, more patients means more need for clinics, imaging centers, hospitals, doctors, nurses, universities etc. universal healthcare could be a financial boon

4

i have aca plan, and it barely covers surgeries, er visits(though managable just not chronically). with the changes to medicaid/snap curreently, i suspect the ACA will be attacked soon, much last year.

unless you are on a employers dental/health plan, dental is not covered in anyway, if you try to buy a individual plan from a thier specific websites, they are more less the same in the coverage, barely anything outside of cleanings and xrays, not even cavities are covered entirely and they have a very low maximum yearly, mostly 1-2k.

1

Healthcare is being run as a business with "just in time" supply and demand, overworking the workers who are willing to work overtime to save patients, cutting fat and trimming operations until it is a lean machine that when you take anything away would sputter. That is the ideal neoliberal image of healthcare. We saw how that worked out with Covid. Some areas should be inefficient and have "fat".

And of course the burocracy mandated by private insurance.

Is it really a fascist lie?

At least in the U.S. the educational burden has certainly increased. The cost of living, the closing of schools and combining of districts, the stagnant wages of teachers, the shortage of teachers due to the stagnation, the automation of jobs is removing apprenticeships, LLMs do not teach as well as doing things hands on. The influence of social media is still a strong pull and media literacy feels like it's at a low in the U.S.

I have a feeling in the next decade we're going to start seeing the consequences as boomers age out of legacy jobs and automation takes the place where educated workers used to.

3

wages are definitely stagnant for teachers, we had people arguing in the subs, that they are relatively "high" in certain places, but the COL negates the wages a bit. like here it takes 10years being a teacher to get even 100k, with the hcol, its way less than that. i wonder if teachers even stay that long and, if 70k is really the starting salary. im also hearing districts are using SUBSTITUTES instead to lower the cost of hiring a full time teacher.

2

Yes. It is a fascist lie.

And education != intellect, education teaches people how to harness the intellect they already have more effectively. A metaphor is "everyone has flour, education teaches you how to make it into bread"

Another key point, to fill the gap caused by extremely expensive Higher Education, self-teaching has become a booming market.

Stuff like Online Courses that give a degree if you pay, but all the material is given for free.

You can open the floodgates but if a plan is not in place to displace the water it'll overcome the system.

The for-profit system is also already slow as balls. It chugs along fine at a snails pace.

To say there's not a educational shortage on degrees that take up to 8+ years in a country that is already facing an educational deficit I think is the real irrational. Planning is an important step that shouldn't just be left as an afterthought.

4

In Canada when they implemented dental care they did it progressively by age group, that could help a bit with the issues you're describing.

well, consider: more rain -> more plants and more food -> it's no longer a desert. but you're a desert fox. what happens to you when you're no longer in a desert?

basically the americans (especially the republicans) see themselves as semi-desert animals. they can live in a habitat where almost no-one else can live. but if you make the place more friendly, everybody could live there and then they would lose their habitat, due to being out-competed by others who are more adapt to a friendlier climate. or at least that's how i imagine that they think; that's why they keep their country shit and eternally semi-broken intentionally, in the hope that no-one else but them can live there, and so they have the whole country to themselves.
