I didn't know cockroaches were mammals. Everyday is a new lesson on Lemmy.

Close, you actually blend them up and strain out the liquid.

That would definitely be easier than trying to milk them twice a day...

From what I remember, the original study was indeed about cockroach "milk", from a species that births live babies and feeds them a slurry of crystals and proteins. That slurry is the stuff that is technically more "nutritious"

I don't think anyone is actually trying to get humans to consume the stuff. There are a lot of mammals that produce milk that is more nutrient dense than cow milk, it's just not as easy to collect it + theres little reason to do so

I don't like almond milk, but I'd prefer almond milk. But I also don't drink cow milk, only soy milk.

1

tachinid flies, like tstete fly produces something equivalent to "milk" for its giant baby.

sh.itjust.works

They have to kill the mothers. It's nowhere near a practical food. One estimate suggested you'd need around a thousand roaches to get about 100 grams of crystals. The more realistic idea scientists floated was sequencing the genes behind the protein and producing it with yeast. 😬

I’d support killing a thousand roaches. For science.

5

Many people just support the killing without the science, but the thought of having to do that instead of milking the teets kills my roach dairy dreams.

Does this mean we're going to start breeding cockroaches for breast size?

Just drink evaporated milk.

Horchata ftw

Mandatory for all public school meals if they want funding. RFK Jr milks the roaches himself to ensure the highest nutritional content.

Okay so... One species of cockroach DOES produce "milk" but its the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata)

They secrete the "milk" into the brood sack (uterus-like pouch housing embryos).

12

The production of oat milk doesn't involve animal abuse so I'll never drink it. Yuck!

Peamilk is better imo but nobody stocks it. I imagine something that sounds like "pee milk" is hard to market though to be fair.

Ever since I tried pea-based protein powder I've come to think that peas don't make good drinks. Maybe I should reconsider..

2

You technically drink split pea soup, and that stuff is pretty good

1

There used to be a brand called "Ripple," and it was pretty tasty. IDK if it's still available

1

Oat milk just tastes like strained porridge ._. And I'm pretty sure that's essentially what it is. Might as well eat the porridge tbh.

Soya milk is the best.

Can you cook with oat milk like you can regular milk? Like sub it in for sauces, or gravies, or whatever?

1

Absolutely, you just need to account for missing fat if the recipe calls for a significant quantity. I just toss in some extra vegetable oil to compensate.

6

Yep! Usually ratio needs a bit of tweaking for the recipe but it works for things ive tried

By itself, it's not noticeably different than water. The flavor is subtle enough that anything will overpower it. It lacks (but not entirely) viscosity.

Coconut milk makes a superior gravy texture as long as the gravy is strong enough to hide the coconut. You can make sawmill gravy out of coconut, but you'll need to add garlic, salt and pepper to hide the coconut.

None of the _____ milks properly work with eggs.

Cashew milk has a great mouthfeel but separates when heated.

All that said:

The plant-based heavy whipping cream you can get from MOM's Organic Market will absolutely work in sauces, gravies and even whipped cream. but it's full of stabilizers to make it happen (which i'm find with personally)

That's kind of what I was thinking. I've only had it a couple times though. Real milk thickens up and absorbs the flavors of the other ingredients when it's heated. Didn't seem like that would work well with the nut milks but I haven't tried it so I asked. Others have said it works fine though so idk... maybe I'll just get some and see what happens.

My wife has a late-in-life diagnosed cow's milk allergy. I've been experimenting with alternatives for 18 years.

There are often a small handful of substitutes that work for specific dishes. A vegan place near me makes absolutely banging DF mac and Cheese, Daiya flavored cheesecakes are 70% of what a real cheesecake is. None of the substitutes are catch all, most aren't even catch-multi.

Country Crock (or many other brands) DF whipping cream is the closest sub I can find for things, but you have to be careful, it has a subtle sweetness in it that messes with things you don't want sweet.

The scientists that tested it can have it all for themselves, I'll even give them a free pass to lord it over us cow milk drinking peons.

Iced roach cream made into a roach milkshake using even more roach milk, topped with whipped roach cream.

Imagine wrangling 2k+ cockroaches for 1 glass of milk a week 😂. Hopefully there are no accidents...

7

which species, probably not the ones that are pest. maybe the friendly , "grassfed" ones like Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

Made using the same method as almond milk? Patent pending, of course.

6

I personally don't have the time or patience for this, which is why i drink oat milk, oats basically milk themselves

  1. milk the roaches.
  2. roast the roaches.
  3. Grind the roaches.
  4. Drip them...

Delicious, low impact, home made drink!

Yes, but only raw. Suck it straight out of the carapace

I think they mean roach milk the same way almond milk is meant

3

.... ground up and juices squeezed from the material and mixed with a few other things

That's the "milk" you get from almonds

And likely the milk you'd get from roaches

I believe this is Cockroach Janta Party (a satirical political party in india) propaganda.

What exactly made you say this? This is a weird and rather inappropriate thing to say about someone...
