Fedecan.ca has been updated with a generalized threadiverse section, an updated list of alternative UIs, and an RSS feed for announcements

Generalized 'Threadiverse' sections

Previously, we had separate guide sections for Lemmy and Piefed, with very few Piefed specific pages. Instead of writing a new set of pages for Piefed, we have generalized most of the Lemmy pages into pages that can be applied to any threadiverse platform. When the page can use additional Piefed specific information or screenshots, we added a "🛠️ Help Needed" card near the top.

This includes the following pages:

Since 'privacy' information will be specific to each platform, and there is more of a risk if a user is confused about that information, we are keeping those pages separate. The existing Lemmy page is still up, and there is a work-in-progress page for Piefed that a contributor is working on.

At this time, the moderation, admin, and dev sections are still separate.

  • We will likely generalize the moderation section next, once the example rule templates are ready
  • The admin sections will likely stay separate
  • The future of the dev section is uncertain, and it might be generalized to the fediverse level

Updated 'Alternative UIs' page

https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/threadiverse/alternative-uis

The entries now follow a consistent format, and are sorted alphabetically after the default UIs. We have also added a summary table that compares all of the alternative UIs.

RSS feeds for announcements

These announcements are intended for users that have accounts on our platforms, or are interested in news about our organization.

You can use it by adding the following link to your RSS feed reader / aggregator: https://fedecan.ca/feed-en.xml

Other changes

Other changes include:

  • Updated the wording on the "Our Platforms" section so that it is clearer for new users: https://fedecan.ca/en/#our-platforms
  • We published a few older announcements to the website. They existed only as Lemmy/Piefed posts in the past: https://fedecan.ca/en/announcements
  • Updated the donation page with a nicer comparison table and option cards. We did not make any changes to the donation options, that will come at a later time: https://fedecan.ca/en/donate
  • We made fixes to the footer responsiveness and style

Archaeology team unearths 'prototype' of world-famous Stonehenge monument just a few miles away

LONDON (AP) — Archaeologists revealed Thursday that they have discovered a structure near the prehistoric stone circle of Stonehenge in southern England that may have served as a “prototype” for the 5,000-year-old Neolithic monument.

A team from the British firm Wessex Archaeology said the structure would have consisted of two wooden poles 120 meters (394 feet) apart and aligned to point directly at the rising sun during the summer solstice and the setting sun at the winter solstice.

Researchers said the discovery predated Stonehenge by around 500 years.

Dad has baby magazine delivered 19 years after ordering it

A father who ordered a parenting magazine for his young family in 2007 has finally received it 19 years later.

Paul Edwards, 52, said he bought a copy of Mother & Baby while his daughter was just 18 months and his son was due to be born three months later.

But the parcel never arrived - until Friday when it dropped through the letter box with a message from Royal Mail apologising "for any inconvenience caused".

Edwards, whose children are now aged 18 and 20 and at university, said he found it "just bizarre".

Missing Mount Everest guide Dawa Sherpa found alive after crawling back to base camp

Dawa Sherpa was last seen around May 29 descending the mountain in the Himalayas, but didn't make it to base camp even though his client did. The pair were among the last climbers on the mountain as the climbing season came to an end and the route was dismantled.

Dawa was located by a cleaning crew Thursday morning as he was crawling down the snowy slopes around the Khumbu Icefall, just above base camp, said Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions, which was co-ordinating the search.

He was quickly carried down to safety and given food and water. A rescue helicopter flew him to HAMS Hospital in Kathmandu, where his wife and daughter, who had already begun funeral rituals, were waiting.

NerdCalci: Calculator for nerds with variables, syntax highlighting, and file sessions [F-Droid]

I came across this calculator app the other day while browsing through F-Droid, and it's my new favourite calculator app.

I've always wanted something like Speedcrunch on mobile, since I think this format works much better on digital screens. Without physical buttons, I don't find much of a benefit from using a skeuomorphic layout (looking like a physical calculator). Unless you get very familiar with a particular calculator app, it is slow to use for anything complicated.

I haven't had a chance to explore all of the functions this app has, but the biggest one for me was variables. When I'm outside and I need to calculate something with multiple steps, it's very helpful to be able to assign variables and then use them in subsequent calculations. Here is a screenshot from the app page:

Access to the LanguageTool browser extension will become paid in 2 weeks, unless you are using a local model or selfhost it

I got a banner warning today linking to this page. It was announced a while back, but I either didn't see it or forgot.

We have made the difficult decision to limit the use of LanguageTool’s browser extension to Premium users only. The rise of generative AI has made it more challenging to sustainably monetize our offering. A majority of users use our products for free, and the relatively small percentage of Premium subscribers is all that is subsidizing our continuously increasing server costs. To improve our Premium experience and to sustain our business model, we’ll be making the LanguageTool browser extension available exclusively for paying customers.

The key bit for people who can selfhost:

Yes. If you are a developer, you can still host and run your own instance of LanguageTool’s server. The browser extension will continue to work as it currently does for users who use it with their own server.

Announcing the Zulip Foundation

From the newsletter

We’re reaching out to administrators of Zulip organizations to announce a major transition for the Zulip open-source project and the Kandra Labs company behind it: I’m stepping back from full-time Zulip leadership, and donating the company to a newly created nonprofit Zulip Foundation. The new structure provides stability, a renewed commitment to our values, and new opportunities for charitable fundraising.

The new Zulip Foundation will be the formal steward of the Zulip project, with a mission of developing the best possible team chat experience, with particular focus on public-interest organizations and communities.

Please check out the announcement blog post to learn about the Zulip Foundation’s leadership, and more. If you have any questions or concerns, please join us for a live chat Q&A in the Zulip development community on Tuesday, May 19 at 4 PM UTC (9 AM US Pacific / 12 PM US Eastern / 6 PM CET), or reach out to [email protected].
