Dry Microfiber. Doubly so when my nails are not smoothly trimmed

88

I haven't saved a gif in years, but this one just captures the emotion perfectly.

5

Hate this shit, the cloth the that touches you back. Get it away from me.

10

Someone: You have dry skin

Me: I do NOT have dry skin

microfiber enters the room

10
Carrotreply
lemmy.today

Dry microfiber sticks to my fingers and when I tell people that they look at me like I'm crazy

5

What?! It's crazy not to be able to notice that kind of assault on skin. Maniacs.

2

This and socks, for some reason touching these makes me unable to breathe. It's like my body just refuses to go on of I have to deal with this.

3

Something has happened that has etched the rim of some of our water glasses, and they're unbearable now. I was just looking up the other day whether this is something I can fix with sandpaper or something. It seems like the answer is "maybe," and it involves a lot of PPE, so for now I may just stick the etched ones at the back of the cupboard.

2

More of a sound than a texture TBH, but the way certain types of styrofoam squeak against cardboard boxes legitimately sets my teeth on edge.

52

I have to pull bags of dextrose off a pallet some days, and the sound/feeling is the worst version of this. I dread it whenever it comes up, it’s impossible to avoid the squeak.

4
lemmy.world

Wooden cooking utensils that have been washed a bunch or raw wood popsicle sticks or those little wooden spoons that come with ice cream cups, all genuinely revolting 🤮

Cheap acrylic sweaters/yarn is also pretty bad

40

Thinking about the wood touching my teeth just makes me shiver. Ugh.

8

The spoons.. I always die inside a little when I see these out in the wild. Some food trucks around here use them and similar wooden forks. Even thinking about them gives me so much discomfort ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ

4

Add clarinet reeds to that. That feeling of wood against teeth… great, now I’ll have shivers down my spine all day from thinking about it.

This is why all my clothes are cotton/wool

3

I really like vicose too, especially for sheets because it cools. Still a natural fiber though.

1

You may have encountered fake mulberry silk. It is the og silk, silk worms feed only on mulberry leaves

3

I just talked about this topic with a few friends and family members and they all cringed in response. Every. Single. One.

If you're writing with a wooden pencil, the graphite snaps out, and the wood of the pencil drags across the paper.

Just writing this made my skin crawl.

29
discuss.tchncs.de

I love mechanical pencils. If you still wanna pencil, check out mechanical ones. There are loads of good options out there, including ones that spin the lead with each stroke to keep a consistent sharpness and ones where the lead is suspended via springs so it doesn't break as easily, as well as ones with retractable lead sleeves so the lead and the metal pipe at the end don't break when you move it around.

6

I've avoided wooden pencils my entire life because of it. I love the ultra-fine 0.3mm graphite with a retractable sleeve, like you suggested. It's funny that I'm fine with scratchy graphite on paper, but hate scratchy wood on paper.

4

I equally love and hate writing on a hard desk with a single sheet of the shittiest loose leaf paper known to man with a wooden pencil.

I hate it because it fucking sucks, but I love it for nostalgia and for a like 15% sensory thing that actually feels nice sometimes, but 85% of the time it fucking sucks.

1
lemmy.zip

Lowkey same, especially when it cakes onto my fingers…( shudders in abject discomfort )

4

T-shirts where you can sense the presence of the drawings/text.

16

Same and corduroy is a very close third. Though for me it’s velvet, microfiber, cord.

1
lemmy.zip

T-shirt too tight around my neck drives me crazy.

14

As a child, I couldn't stand the feeling of clothing tags against the back of my neck. It would drive me up the wall, but my parents thought I was just being fussy, so I'd often get in trouble for fidgeting with them. I still can't tolerate tight shirts, obnoxious tags, or anything around my neck. Even clippers touching the back of my neck during a haircut send the bad kind of shivers through my entire body.

2

Raw wood. Whenever I see someone put a wooden spoon in their mouth I want to scream. I have to keep the wrapper around popsicle sticks.

12

Yessss. Also wood floors. I'm pretty sure preferring laminate over wood puts me in a minority of people.

4

I highly prefer wood floors, so long as it is sealed and finished wood, but I’ve worked as a handyman for many years and have developed a deep and personal hatred for all forms of laminate flooring.

The sound of a permanent marker used on cardboard makes my teeth itch. I know it’s not a texture but I can sure feel it.

12

Yea, same. It's the granularity of the micro-roughness in both materials that does it for me. Same as brushed metal

4
lemmy.world

Same! It’s lessened over the years, but there’s still something about that sound that makes my teeth itch. The absolute worst were those huge permanent markers with metal bodies that smelled like chemical warfare.

3
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Any form of crumb or sand in my bed. I will feel that one particle in my back like a dagger all night

10

This so much. My mother used to tell me the story of the princess and the pita even I was little, and I think it was probably a moralistic story, but I have no idea — but I related to that girl so much.

Same goes for bare feet. I don't mind being outside barefoot, that's where dirt is supposed to be... But indoors? No thanks.

2
lemmy.today

That's not neurodivergent, that's everybody. Nobody likes even a single crumb in their bed.

-1
lemmy.dbzer0.com

I have a neurodivergent spouse that doesn't give a shit about crumbs in the bed. So you're wrong on at least one count.

lemmy.world

Pretty much anything that is sticky or gritty. Sugar is the worst because it is both!

10
piefed.social

Only when wet. Otherwise... Yea, I'd hate to roll around in sugar after a dip like some human sized churro. Ugh.

3

I was gonna say certain towels, saw your comment, and just reading this made my teeth hurt. I gotta get outt here

3

That indescribable feeling of touching/squeezing cotton balls absolutely makes my skin crawl. 😬

2
lemmy.world

Stuffing for stuffed animals, when I touch it I can barely breathe. I have no idea why.

9

Rather positive, then, that stuffing is usually meant to be on the INSIDE of the stuffed animal such that you don’t touch it directly.

2

I had to stuff an animal at school as a kid. It was a nightmare, I've touched it only a couple of times since then.

1
lemmy.world

I can not pick just one and just reading this thread is making my brain go eurghghghg sounds.

The feeling of jeans at all. Toenails snagging on sheets. Hands covered in stuff with no paper towels. Many clothes. Anything in hair not approved by three discussions with brain prior. Sticky things.

9
lemmy.world

Hands covered in stuff is a constant issue. I go through so many napkins when eating at a restaurant and still can't wait to be done eating so I can wash my face and hands. I can't even enjoy my food because I'm trying to race through the meal, touching as little as humanly possible, just so I can wash up.

I eat so many things with a fork and knife! Sorry quesadilla and burger, you are fork and knife time!

2

OMG yes. My co-workers used to mildly rib me (they were supportive so it was okay) about eating everything with utensils. I blew their minds by eating crisps with a fork.

It’s to the point where I keep a set with me in case we’re at a restaurant or food truck that doesn’t provide them (or provides flimsy plastic, but that’s a different peeve of mine). There’s just something about food mess overall that I can’t get past.

The skin on my fingers instantly turns into Velcro whenever I touch microfibre.

3

Not just me then. Although it is dependent upon the quality of the cloth.

1

omg... i did not expect that to be a thing... thanks enlighening me :D

There's this material that some notebook covers were made of when I was in school that made an AWFUL noise when you scratched it with your fingernail. Naturally the other students made a point of using it to aggravate me.

8

Ohh but you're missing out on poor man's napalm! Dissolve that stuff in gasoline and you'll have a wonderfully long lasting flammable mixture, and it's quite satisfying to dissolve, too.

8

Chewing gauze or tissue. That sensation plus the squeaking and crushing is one of the few things that would actually make me scream

Then in general, wet slimy stuff (that isn't lube) or having vaseline on my hands (I think everyone would hate that though)

6

I don’t know if this counts, but I cannot even see a pencil eraser without my teeth hurting. Just the site of them tingles my teeth. If I see someone erasing, I have to hold my lips tight together.

6

100% polyester is gross.

I really can’t stand this one kind of paper used sometimes in cheap mass-market paperbacks or colouring books. It’s coarse and spongy and literally crumbles if you try to use an eraser on it.

Not a texture per se, but having one wet hand and one dry hand 😱

6
lemmy.world

Think about putting a brown paper bag lightly on your molars. Then, lightly close your jaw to where your upper and lower teeth are both lightly touching the paper bag.

Pull the bag out. I just shivered in revulsion typing this out.

3

I always hated the swishing sound they made as I walked. I thought everyone could hear it, but they didn't seem to. It drowned out all other sounds to me.

1

Same here. Omg it feels like nails scratching on a blackboard.

1

Really specific one, but the Cadbury Mini Eggs. They have a slightly rough candy coating and the feeling of two of them sliding against each other kills me inside.

6
sh.itjust.works

I hate to say it but pants.

I know they matter. I wear them. But man I can't stand it sometimes

5
lemmy.world

I'm with you. Jeans are the worst for me. They're heavy and stiff, and depending on how intense my sensitization is that day, the waistband can feel like anything from rough cardboard to sandpaper against my skin. Adding a belt makes it even worse.

I'm grateful my employer lets me wear loose-fitting athletic pants in the office. A coworker and I were talking about it recently, and he couldn't understand why I dislike jeans because they're his favorite pants. Clothing that feels perfectly comfortable to most people usually feels restrictive, heavy, and abrasive to me. If robes were culturally acceptable as everyday wear in the west, I'd wear them constantly.

3

Suspenders helped me a lot. I can still to looser ones and no tightness on my stomach.

I'd love robs being cool too!

1
lemmy.world

Anything with that "changing holographic" effect. Run your nails over that and in guaranteed to run out of the room trying not to twist out of my own skin.

5

Really shitty tshirt prints do it for me. I have to molest the shirt no matter how cool it looks. If it feels like rough paint, no fucking way.

2

Yeeesss that lenticular plastic with the tiny ridges. Just your description made me want to heave. Any similar texture to that as well.

2

Cooked raisins.

Anything that squeaks. Squeaking hair when its clean, green beans that aren't cooked enough.

5
lemmy.today

Are you saying green beans squeak, or are undercooked green beans a separate thing? Because I would argue that disliking undercooked green beans isn't a neurodivergent thing.

2
startrek.website

I love green beans, but they squeak on my teeth if they are steamed to the proper level. I need mine over cooked until they are soft enough to no longer squeak, or raw.

I can't stand crunchy peanut butter for the same reason.

3
lemmy.world

I can't eat raw onions or celery because of the squeaking. shudders

2
lemmy.today

I can't eat onion because of the disgusting taste or smell. I used to not like celery much, but now I like a bit in tuna or chicken salad for crunchiness, which a lot of people here probably hate. Useless otherwise.

2

Lol yeah, you seen "ants on a log?" Celery spread with peanut butter with raisins on top? So much gag 😂

1

Squeaky on your teeth? Very interesting. I like my green beans al dente, and overcooked is inedible for me. We could make it work, though, I'd just take out my serving before they cook too long.

But we agree on the PB. I HATE crunchy peanut butter, too. As a kid, I didn't even know it existed, then someone made me a sandwich with it, and I was grossed out and outraged! I'm old now, and still enjoy a PB &J me and then (had one last night), but I've never bought a jar of crunchy PB in my entire life.

2

Plasticy "canvas", that stuff that cheap suit bags are made of.

As well as anything gritty.

5

Most napkins but especially the 'posh' super absorbent make me want to tear my fingernails off.

Sclerids. The bumpy bits in pears that ick you out are called sclerids. I can’t resist any opportunity to flex random knowledge from my undergraduate botany course.

12

TIL. Love me some sclerids. Especially when the pear is soft and ripe.

5

Finely brushed metal. I am fine with silverware on ceramic but please, for the love of Cthulhu, no brushed metal

4

My parents have blue plates that are older than me, and there's no glaze on them at all. Any time I had to empty the dishwasher, I'd wet my hands before picking them up. Even thinking about the dry squeaking of them against my skin makes me shudder

4

My long lost brother !! or long lost sister (?) !!

2

Wet paper. Just being around it makes me want to vomit, but not vomit, it's hard to describe, I just feel ill.

4

I think everyone kind of hates styrofoam. It's squeaky in an unpleasant way, feels weird, smells weird. Hating styrofoam is perfectly normal.

1
Formfillerreply
lemmy.world

Ok well I’m neurodivergent and I hate styrofoam. That’s my answer. I hate the sound it makes when it gets pulled out of boxes. I hate the texture. I hate the sounds it makes when it’s used for food. I hate when my food is in it . I hate touching it. It gives me the creeps

1

I'm just saying that even if you weren't neurodivergent, you'd probably still hate styrofoam for all those same reasons.

1

Sweet potato and avocado.

Sand and wet trash, respectively. That's how my brain rewires it

3

I hate hate hate hate the little hooks from insect's feet/legs, they hook into your skin but just the very outer layer and it's like it's getting to rip my skin off by making it peels off of the skin itself!!! Hate hate hate hate hate hate hate

Also, paper being eaten in any shape or form. I had to roll my lips over my teeth while I wrote that down it just makes them hurt even from just imagining it, seeing my baby nephew eating it made me have to look away and try to ignore the entire ordeal as much as possible, even people talking about it

3

Rubbing my hand on carpets, thankfully I don't have to experience it very often. I don't mind walking barefoot.

3
lemmy.world

Velvet, corduroy, some microfleece, crushed velvet, suede

I can feel the fiber in my fingerprints and it wigs me out.

3

Neurodiversity is so weird. I have very string texture requirements, but they're apparently the opposite of yours. The feeling of corduroy grooves in harmony with my fingerprint grooves is recently satisfying to me. And velvet -- omg heaven is literally made of velvet.

My issues are with inconstancy -- a space of smooth fabric is ruined if there's a tiny bit of grit somewhere. Crumbs in the bed? I'll sleep on the couch. (Interestingly, both velvet and corduroy can obscure such inconsistencies, maybe that's why I like them?)

3

The holographic binder covers that they came out with in the 00's. Remembering accidentally rubbing my nails across the plastic ridges on those still bothers me.

I literally get goosebumps just thinking about this texture. I hate it.

2

There are dozens of us.

But yeah, I'm glad those went out of style. 20 plus years later and it's still the immediate thing I think about when people mention unpleasant textures.

1
lemmy.world

Wet bread as a texture can make me puke, even the thought of it makes me queasy. Also I hate socks, hate how they grip, hate how they get wet, hate them all around. I know there are few other textures I recoil from, but I encounter them so rarely that I can't remember what they are associated with off the top of my head.

3

2

Much appreciated for the info on the reference. Never seen Slomo Guys, so would never have gotten it lol.

1

I absolutely HATE the this decade's fashion trend is to make everything out of woven fabrics. I cannot stand the feeling of weaves on my skin, and it has severely limited the clothing options available to me for the last six years.

2
lemmy.today

As a non-neurodivergent person with no texture issues, I find this subject fascinating. I find many of the textures listed here to be interesting, but not anxiety-inducing or anything like that. What makes your reaction to it so much different than mine? It's so interesting that the brain would react so differently.

People taste things differently, smell things differently, etc., so why not react differently to textures?

2
lemmy.world

Ive a similar perspective and I live with multiple neurodivergent people in my house. It seems like a visceral reaction that doesn't even make it to the brain. Just like your hand jerks back if you touch something hot, they immediately gag or cough or itch or whatever.

They ate or touched one thing one time, decided they didn't like it, and now their limbic system protects them from anything similar to it.

It seems to be mostly food and clothing. I can't tell the difference between these two cotton shirts but they will have a long conversation about how one in great and the other is horrible.

3

Pretend we have intuitive fung sui magic mixed up with our senses 😂🤷🏻‍♀️💜

1

My parents would have been SO resistant to anything like that. I'm not neurodivergent (not diagnosed, anyway), but I had some food issues as a kid. There were certain things I was NEVER going to eat, no matter how hungry I got, no matter how much punishment I got, mostly vegetables.

As an adult, I got into gardening, and that got me eating a few more vegetables, but I still won't go near onions or green peppers, and quite a few other things.

I probably could use some testing.

1

I hate peeling roasted/steamed aubergines and peppers, they're hot and slippery and even thinking about the texture on my hands makes me feel sick, panicky and overwhelmed.

Luckily I can buy good ajvar in shops here (uk) these days, and I've even started even jars of chopped and peeled roasted aubergine flesh too.

2

Basically anything that’s bread/or baked that’s a few hours old and started to dry out.

Not everything as some things hold up well, others I don’t like.

Also potato that you air fried but then took to work and reheated, F that.

Also plain rice as it gets a few hours old

Onions/bell peppers/tomatoes. Basically anything flaky like those in my mouth.

1

I hate onions and green peppers, because they taste terrible, not because of the texture. I love red, orange, and yellow peppers, because they're ripe, and the sugars have bloomed in them. Green peppers are just unripe and nasty, like a green orange.

Tomatoes are awesome.

I don't think of any of them as flaky, though. Onions, maybe, because of the layers, but peppers and tomatoes have a firmness to them, not flakiness.

1

Gritty foods, for sure.

Stringy as well... like long strands of muscle from meat.

I seem to be okay with most fabrics and textiles. So long as theyre not strangling my ribcage.

1

Wool and cotton blends. If I have to sleep with cotton sheets, I'm not. All of my clothes are either polyester or bamboo.

1

Those types of soft or semi-hard foods with hard seeds inside, like pickles, zucchini or mountain cucumbers/maroon gherkins/spiny cucumbers/West Indian gherkin/bur gherkins/bur cucumbers/gooseberry gourds/wild gerkins/whatever they call them where they live (I'm talking about Cucumis anguria).

I HATE the srnsation of the seeds within those vegetables.
