Block lemmy.ml if lemmy feels tirening.

Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it's one of the best things I've ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.

For the past few months I'd been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I'd blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.

Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I'd had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.

The breaking point was seeing some dude post a "meme" implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you're saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell...

Having mindless tankies parrot ccp and russian propaganda is getting tiring.

No! It isn't propaganda! You're the one who is parroting propaganda!

Saying russia and china are dictatorships and stuff, i saw a post on VK that said exactly the contrary! And it must be true!

Xi Jinping said he cares about free speech, he can't lie, only western politicians lie!

I believe it went over your head. This was a satire comment. It is made by OP. OP doesn't believe in those words. Sarcasm can be used without writing "/s".

Extremism etc has broad appeal to disenfranchised people of a certain maturity level with an absence of critical thinking skills.

IMO one of the things that's ruining the internet currently is all the young people who don't know shit about fuck and are completely unaware of it. Blind leading the blind shit.

26
piefed.ca

I think it's a combination. There are accounts which run classic FSB style; series of innocuous posts and then ZELENSKY IS A NAZI, then innocuous posts.

Meanwhile, ignorant dumb kids who have been dealt a rough hand with covid, housing prices, ai, trump, climate change etc are pretty susceptible to the dumbest but most appealing simple answers/boogymen.

Add in the Internet's ability to help you avoid ever encountering an opinion with which you disagree and you've got a very toxic breeding ground for the worst and dumbest ideas.

sh.itjust.works

Let's not forget the 15-year-old nihilistic edgelords who, for a change, aren't outright Nazis, if only for the reason because there were so many nihilistic outright Nazi edgelords and Wehraboos out there that it had become too mainstream. Also, they read somewhere that the Red Army destroyed the Wehrmacht which automatically makes the Soviet Union superior to the Third Reich. So they went full Stalinist instead.

There must be at least some who have found their way from WoT to Reddit and from there to Lemmy.

At least those who used to run in Tumblr's "more leftist than thou" rat race that apparently suggested that being enby is more leftist than being trans to such a degree that trans isn't leftist enough are usually too feeble to go full Tankie and support genocides if committed in the name of communism.

I don't think Russian intelligence would waste their time on a platform as small as Lemmy. They've propagandized enough people that it's simply self-perpetuating here. The tankies are still exposed to other outlets where they'd see Russian propaganda and repeat it here.

Try talking about Nato expansion and see how far you get.

The government doesn't care if you hate it as long as you confirm the narrative with your hate.

4
lemmy.world

What expansion?

The latest new members of NATO after many years have applied because Russia invaded ukraine, a non-NATO country.

If there weren't countries invading other ones, no one would need to join NATO, as it is a defensive alliance.

3
plythreply
feddit.org

What expansion?

Russia says that they were promised no Nato expansion in Eastern Europe like there was a commitment to no Nato troops in East Germany.

If there weren’t countries invading other ones, no one would need to join NATO, as it is a defensive alliance.

How can countries protect themselves if they are attacked by Nato or Nato countries?

2
feddit.org

It's the right of every country to join military alliances as they want. And some promise back in the early 90s is totally nothing binding that is valid when one country is actively attacking its neighbors. Every neighbor state will then try to get into an alliance against such aggression.

1

Which country has Russia attacked before the Nato expansion?

1
lemmy.world

They can defend themselves the same way as if any other country attacked them.

NATO doesn't protect you if you start an offensive war. It only protects you if you've been attacked first.

There's no better example than the epstein-US-Iran war. Trump keeps whining that his "NATO allies" are not helping him. Iran right now can attack the US as much as it can, since the US started the war for no fucking reason.

Some individual countries that are part of NATO have helped the US, but that was independently of NATO.

-2

The US are using the bases of their Nato partners for Iran. It's not a Nato mission in name but that doesn't matter to Iran. If Ukraine gets Nato bases with fighter jets and midrange missiles then it doesn't help Russia if Nato doesn't attack but only the USA from bases in Ukraine.

3
lemmy.ml

NATO is as defensive as the IDF is. It's a gang of imperialist countries protecting each other from the imperial boomerang, and will constantly invent new enemies to justify its own existence.

2
lemmy.world

Yeah. A defensive alliance is totally the same as a military that is currently committing a genocide for the purpose of territorial expansion.

And Russia is totally an invented enemy that is not currently in a war with the purpose of territorial expansion.

Oh wait, what is actually similar to the IDF is Russia! Who would have thought?

1

NATO countries aid and assist with genocide. The purpose of NATO is to defend the collective interests of the world's imperialist countries from anti-colonial and socialist backlash

Russia's territorial expansion was provoked by the endless encirclement and expansion of NATO, with the refusal of Russian admission to NATO to protect it. When imperialist countries encircle you and refuse to let you join so as to protect yourself, it's only reasonable to expect that one day said encircled country will lash out. The entire war was preventable even up to 2022.

0

We're officially on the decline. A laughing stock to our enemies and a pariah to our allies. Even if the American people pull off a miracle somehow in 2028 and elect someone like Ocasio Cortez to the presidency. That's like being upset about encountering queer people in the arts, or chuds in the weightlifting space, or conservatives at the gun range. What the hell did you expect?

24
lemmy.ml

So called “tankies” supposedly everywhere, but all I see are left-wing people.

Yes. Because "tankie" is just a pejorative for anyone to the left of the western Overton window

14

What? Tankie is a term that came around to disparage communists who sided with the USSR in sending tanks to Hungary. It specifically means authoritarian Stalinish stuff

-8
lemmy.ml

Nobody in the year 2026 is using the word tankie in the context of the internal disagreement between British Trotskyists and Khrushchevists about the Hungarian uprising in the 1950s. Even you immediately - one sentence later - pivot to claiming it must means "authoritarian Stalinish stuff", which is both incredibly vague and has nothing to do with the Hungarian revolution; a term that can be used for anyone to the left of the western Overton window.

18

I see why people block y'all. No. No one calls anarchists tankies. Confabulate as much as you want. It means what it means, and has meant since its inception. People like you, probably. And you fucking know it.

You don't seriously believe that the word tankie, in this day and age, is only used to refer to people who support Khrushchev sending tanks into Hungry half a century ago. So you're just undeniably being willfully dishonest now. And for what? What is the point about lying about this?

People like you, probably. And you fucking know it.

I was not born for several decades when the Hungarian revolt occurred and have no real opinion on it, so no, I don't "fucking know it", I know you're fucking wrong, and are trying to cover that up with impotent aggression.

11

No one calls anarchists tankies

Yes they do. All the time. Ask me how I know.

You know because George Soros paid you to tell that lie probably!

0

Anarchists that support existing socialist states get called tankie all the time. "Tankie" isn't an ideology or a species of human, it's a pejorative for a loose grouping of those that like, say, China and Cuba.

10

No one calls anarchists tankies.

Happens all the time, it's a right wing/ center-lib tactic to sow division

6
lemmy.ml

"Tankie" is essentially a pejorative for those that support AES states. Tankies are everywhere on the fediverse, the reality is that so-called tankies aren't the evil people that want to eat babies or anything like those loudly complaining about us believe.

8
piefed.world

It's my understanding that tankie refers to people who think of themselves as left-wing but actually back authoritarian states and make excuses for their war crimes and human rights abuses.

2
lemmy.ml

All states are authoritarian. All states are monopolies on violence, in the interests of the ruling class of society. The major difference with socialist states is that the ruling class is the working class, while owning classes are subjugated by the authority of the state. Further, so-called tankies aren't really concerned with excuses, but with dispelling bourgeois mythos. Information warfare is incredibly complex, and directed against anything that serves as an alternative to the dominance of western hegemony and neoimperialism, led by the dominance of finance capital and multinational corporations on a global scale.

9
Crashumbcreply
lemmy.world

If Tankies were anything like you're trying to portray them. Then they wouldn't blindly support Russia, China, North Korea which are dictatorships. They wouldn't ban anyone who mentions tiananmen square or the China and Russian genocides...

I mean who actually believes the working class in China (which doesn't own anything much less the means of production) supports getting "scored" for their social standing... Lol

1
lemmy.ml

Tankies don't "blindly" support the Russian Federation, PRC, and DPRK. Ask a tankie about what they support about anything you find odd or abhorrent. Tankies don't even support Russia, just their movements against the present hegemonic system of US imperialism, which by opposing they help take the boot off the necks of the global south. The PRC and DPRK are supported, as actually existing socialist countries, but not blindly. Ask away and you'll get nuanced answers.

You aren't banned for mentioning the 1989 Tian'anmen Square protests, nor the June 4th, 1989 Beijing Riots and suppression of said riots. You get banned for repeating now debunked atrocity propaganda about 10,000 students on the square itself getting killed, rather than the truth, which is that the hundreds that were killed that day, including dozens of PLA officers and a few hundred rioters, happened in areas all over Beijing as the PLA advanced towards the square. As for China and Russia's genocides, not even western consensus agrees that these even exist. The UN doesn't believe any repressions by China or Russia amount to genocide, and Wikipedia simply reports on the allegations, not taking a firm stance.

As for China, the working classes own and control the state, which in turn controls and owns the commanding heights of the economy. Virtually all finance is state-owned, and all strategic industries such as defense, electric power, petroleum and petrochemicals, telecommunications, coal, civil aviation, and shipping are overwhelmingly state owned. "Pillar industries" such as equipment manufacturing, auto, information technology, construction, iron and steel, nonferrous metals and chemicals are largely but not as thoroughly state owned, and emerging industries are largely private.

Private industry is allowed to assist with the socialization of production, developing the foundation of public ownership and planning. It's very difficult to individually plan millions of tiny firms, but a few monopolies become very easy to plan, and folding them into the public sector turns them into public use. Markets create these monopolies naturally, and that's how and why they are used.

As for the idea of a social credit score, it doesn't exist outside of a few cities, and is largely used for corrupt businesses. The idea of an Orwellian style credit score simply is fiction meant to scare you, when in reality the west has social credit systems like FICO that apply to every citizen, and dramatically impact what you can afford to do and how to live.

Talk to a tankie sometime.

2

Every Tankie I've run into on .ml has blindly supported all three, banned me for even mentioning things like the square, genocide, Russia being a dictatorship, China "social report card"... The list goes on and and they are consistently as cultist as MAGA lovers in the US.

So forgive me if having been on Lemmy for several years now. I call complete bullshit on your statement.

Oh and seeing the rest of the statement, your attempt to down play the square massacre and split hairs about where and how many were killed. You are absolutely a Tankie and as bad as any MAGA cultist. Take your bullshit propaganda back to .ml

1

I got banned for "inventing reality" after talking about the 2009 Green Movement in Iran and how a lot of Iranians don't love their regime. Basing this on Iranians living in Iran apparently was akin to "inventing reality".

but i haven’t seen the users do anything.

It's not the users people block over, blocking an instance doesn't stop you from interacting with the users.

What it does, is block every community from that instance from your feed, that's it.

People block .ml, because while some decent communities may exist, their admins will see your comments elsewhere, then find any/all comments on their instance and either harass you or ban you.

The block just means you won't accidentally stumble into a place they control.

The minority of users who are really problematic, are likely to be banned everywhere else already

I'm not sure what you mean. If someone harasses you then you can just block them. If you block an instance it's users can still see your posts elsewhere and comment can't they? I don't politically align with the Lemmy devs but lemmy.ml is their instance and just like piefed, mbin, and others they can run their personal instance as they see fit. This post made me curious so I took a look at my block list, and almost all of my blocked accounts are from .world. I've only blocked two .ml users. I wonder how much that varies by instance.

Every time I see people from a handful of the same instance always try to pivot any discussion of one of the other handful of instances back to a criticize of .world, I go look at their post history.

I always see the same thing; almost all .world postings, a few of the others, and none on their home instance, or any of the ones they're defending

I keep asking, never getting an answer:

Why do you hang around .world so much if you don't like it?

Why not just block .world?

3
lemmy.zip

Why do you hang around .world so much if you don’t like it?

Answer: because, unfortunately, many of the most active communities are hosted on .world.

20
lemmy.world

While I appreciate the answer...

Part of the question involved who I was asking:

Every time I see people from a handful of the same instance always try to pivot any discussion of one of the other handful of instances back to a criticize of .world, I go look at their post history.

"It is what it is" and commenting where the people are makes perfect rational sense.

But...

I'm assuming you don't immediately try to turn any criticism against an instance whose politics you agree with, back on the mainstream instance.

If you did, then it wouldn't be rational to spend all your time here

1
lemmy.zip

I’m assuming you don’t immediately try to turn any criticism against an instance whose politics you agree with, back on the mainstream instance.

I think that many people reflexively speak out against perceived unfairness. Why should they stay silent when they see people from a problematic mainstream instance constantly complaining about other instances that they see nothing wrong with, the vast majority of the time without evidence, I might add? I mean, it adds up to endless whining, even in completely unrelated threads. I often see it go like this:

Person 1: "Hey, did you hear about this new scientific discovery? Pretty interesting, huh?"

Person 2 (very often from .world or piefed.social): "Well, just stay away from the DaMn tAnKiEs! They're horrible!"

Person 1 (or Person 3): "Huh? I didn't say anything about any tankies. Besides, .world or piefed has plenty of idiots too."

I've rarely ever seen anyone grumble about .world in a completely unrelated thread without cause (i.e., in response to a .world person saying something stupid), but I see that all the time against mostly the socialist/communist instances with some spillover to the anarchist instances. After a while, people start to react automatically to any complaints about other instances.

5
lemmy.world

Then Person 1 should block those accounts for being idiots, like I most likely did years ago...

I’ve rarely ever seen anyone grumble about .world in a completely unrelated thread without cause

That's easy, its all over this thread, if you don't recognize it here, you're not recognizing it elsewhere.

Like a colorblind person insisting the color red isnt real...

-2

That’s easy, its all over this thread, if you don’t recognize it here, you’re not recognizing it elsewhere.

But that's appropriate in this thread, since it's specifically about a person on lemmy.world complaining about lemmy.ml. The scenario I was describing was of someone chiming in about the "tankies" in a thread completely unrelated to Lemmy instances or politics, like gardening or movies. I feel like I see this all the freaking time, but I suppose I could be wrong. It's always a possibility.

0

Throbbing_banjo was curious about their blocklist, they did not criticize anything. The reason for having a lot of lemmy.world users on there, as Eldritch said, is most likely statistics. You talk about being rational while battling made up phantoms.

2

2
piefed.world

That makes sense dbzer0's made a hard .ml turn lately so I could see why the users like each other.

-4

It is bullshit. You can read the sidebar of the instance they clearly stating they are against russia. I remember debating a pro russia person on a db zero community and they rightfully remove his comments.

Some people just assume dbzero not defedersting from ml make them friend of ml. Thr only thing dbzero and ml agree about is anti the genocidal state of Israel

11

they started making accounts on other instances so they can spout their shit and get banned without it getting back to their main instance to avoid defederation

-5

Could someone give some examples of these leftist propaganda posts? I just browse all top day, maybe they get diluted enough for me to overlook these.. i've seen this argument pass by so many times.

29
feddit.org

When I joined Lemmy, Lemmy.ml didn't really feel different than Lemmy.world to me.

Maybe I'm taking crazy pills but it's like they got more propagandist on purpose. As if they decided to up the anthem because .grad got defederated by all sane instances.. And what's propaganda good for if it doesn't reach the right people?

Same with tankies having lemmy.world accounts. It's not ironic, it makes sense.

Now Lemmy.ml became their "outreach" instance, where they ban everyone who criticizes them (even on another instance) or even for downvoting (Dessalines did that because his favorite poster 'cowbee' got downvoted by "bots" too much. Then they opted out on lemvotes, so no more checking yourself).

For an outsider it looks like everyone agrees with them because they upvote each other and every critic got either banned or they blocked them themselves and I'm starting to think this might be by design. I wonder how many users are banned from .ml, while still retaining general visibility through federation.

Isn't it basically how Russia and China operate? Keep your own people isolated in a bubble where only your narrative is accepted and at the same time invade other spaces to manipulate their opinions?

26
hendrikreply
palaver.p3x.de

Dunno if that's "on purpose". I think it's more, back in the day .ml was the defacto standard instance, so lots of average people went there and you'd find a wider bandwidth of people. That might have changed with some people leaving and the new visitors not signing up on .ml anymore. That makes the rest of the group condense to people who pick .ml on purpose. But that's not a deliberate plan, more how maths works. 😅

16
sh.itjust.works

It's the same everywhere in the Fediverse, and it always has:

Newbies always join the biggest server. Unless, of course, the biggest server is being hidden by most of the other servers (pawoo.net used to be the biggest of all Fediverse servers until newbie zerg rushes onto mastodon.social demoted it).

It's a no-brainer. Don't know where to go? Just go where everyone goes. Don't know what to do? Just do what everyone does. Also explains the success of the iPhone, the Samsung Galaxy S, the Ford F-150, the VW Golf, the Toyota Corolla...

Back in the day, when Reddit charged app devs $20M for their API, which killed 3rd-party apps, which enshittified Reddit, which caused the first migration wave to Lemmy, Lemmy still was so small that lemmy.ml was the biggest server, being run by Lemmy itself and all. So naturally, everyone went to lemmy.ml.

Eventually, in spite of people from all walks of life and with all kinds of attitude being there, lemmy.ml had become so unabashedly Tankie that countless users decided to move elsewhere. It had become blatantly clear that .ml, actually the TLD of Mali, stands for МДЯ☭ЇꙄМ-LЭИЇИЇꙄМ. Back then, lemmy.world was the largest non-Tankie server, so they went there.

It was due to that migration within Lemmy that lemmy.world outgrew lemmy.ml and became the biggest Lemmy server. Being #1 on the list of the biggest Lemmy servers, it also became the #1 destination for newbies, and the feedback loop started anew.

A side-effect was that the Tankie-to-non-Tankie rate on lemmy.ml grew because it was almost exclusively non-Tankies who left whereas the Tankies stayed.

Lemmy. I thought about making a Mastodon account but didn't see the need eventually, it's not my style

0

Unlike Lemmy, Mastodon has on-boarding for dumb-dumbs.

Imagine you could simply load an app named "Lemmy" onto your phone. You launch it. You can enter a name, a mail address and a password. There's a field that says, "Server," and it already defaults to lemmy.ml. You don't even have to touch it. You can ignore it. And you're done.

Of course, the consequence would be lemmy.ml still being the biggest server by far.

This is literally how Mastodon's on-boarding goes. Only that the default server, owned and operated by the makers of Mastodon, is mastodon.social (it's about one third of Mastodon and some 22% of the whole Fediverse in terms of monthly active users), and you have two names on Mastodon, a short name for your Fediverse ID and a display name.

There are Mastodon newbies who take months to understand that Mastodon is not just one central website (that mastodon.social is not "the" Mastodon website). Or one central server infrastructure hiding behind a phone app. And many take years to understand that the Fediverse is more than just Mastodon. Some have joined in October or November, 2022, after Elon Musk had bought out Twitter, and who still believe that the Fediverse equals Mastodon.

All because they don't have to deal with any of this when joining.

Hey! My Golf was amazing! I wish they still made cars like it.

1
piefed.world

I have my problems with dbzer0’s admins and moderation but there’s something else going on there because I can see their votes.

3

I always get the 404 error if the post itself was from those instances (even if I check comments made in those posts' threads). If the main post is from anywhere else, I can still see their users' votes on the post or any comments also not from .ml or db0 users.

3

I was going to ask for a source on this. But on checking in on a comment or two in this thread. This explains a lot of the consistently inconsistent behavior I've been seeing the few times I do check lemvotes. Like I was wondering who the hell was down voting Jo, as they are always pretty chill and even keeled. Look at any other comments on the thread no problem. I look up anyone from Lemmy.ml and it's 404.

That's certainly not the behavior of an instance with nothing to hide. Though I would still think administrators should be able to see the votes and identity brigading. But this does explain a few things I've noticed on isolated instances when I've used it.

4

I mean why would a leftist like ANYTHING about current day Russia? China? OK, there are apologisms that can fit into a leftist umbrella. But RUSSIA? It's a fucking kleptocracy. Anyone "leftist" saying otherwise is a crock of shit. They haven't been red in decades.

9

China is a socialist country, public ownership is the principal aspect of the economy and the working classes control the state. Russia is a capitalist country, nobody says it's leftist in any way. The only support Russia gets is with respect to the fact that it opposes the current hegemonic force of western imperialism, no further than that.

5
sh.itjust.works

I mean why would a leftist like ANYTHING about current day Russia?

Because they unironically believe that Russia = the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. That Putin literally is the Premier of the USSR and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Maybe even that what Putin is trying to do in the Ukraine is reconquer his own territory from CIA-driven Western insurgents.

Basically, just because Putin is a Russian, he automatically is a ☭★✊ СФММꙠИЇꙄТ СФМЯДDЭ ✊★☭, therefore he must be anti-Capitalist, therefore he has to be a good guy.

These people completely distrust any and all Western media because it's capitalist, imperialist propaganda, but they take everything from Russia Today and Sputnik News at face value because the good guys wouldn't ever lie, right?

They say they're against wars. But if Putin started a full-on invasion in Germany (while the country is in a state in which it'll be defenceless within three days), I can guarantee you that they'll cheer for the Red Army finally coming and purging capitalism and imperialism.

Seriously, we have a political party in Germany whose very principles appear to be based on this belief, and that tried to get a new Chancellor of their own into office.

3

Nobody believes the USSR is still here. This is a made-up strawman point, and talking to literally any communist will tell you this.

9

Because they unironically believe that Russia = the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics. That Putin literally is the Premier of the USSR and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

This is a straight up, unqualified falsehood, but it will get upvoted here anyway because .world liberals are happy to accept lies if it lets them punch left.

To believe that they believe that should be a hint to first investigate if that is true and if it is not, to reevaluate one's own sources of information.

In their view, the world is black and white. They hate to be inbetween, they need to "choose a side". They can't say US and China suck both, or fuck Israel but also fuck Hamas, they need to be "pro" something. Because most of them grew up in it, they are mostly opposed to western countries - but they can't leave it like that, they need to be anti imperialist. And that means siding with Russia, Iran, North Korea, China etc., the enemies of the west. It is absurd, but that's how easy it is. Some months ago we all watched how Iran killed thousands of its citizen on the streets - now that the US attacked Iran, they sympathize with the Islamist mullahs! Because.. fuck Israel or something? It's a really narrow world view and it makes of course no sense, I mean who is imperialist if not Russia lol?

As the person effected, it seems pretty suspicious when my entire comment history going back a few weeks at a time steadily get a stream of 5-10 downvotes within a short timeframe, despite lacking any movement, or when a comment of mine gets downvoted suspiciously by a ton of people despite a similar comment being more upvoted than not right next to it in the comment tree.

sh.itjust.works

Feddit.org is a German server that sticks to German laws.

Germany has a special historical guilt towards Jews. You know, what with having murdered half of all Jews on the planet within less than a decade and intended to cull the other half as well.

Anti-Judaism is a capital Federal crime in Germany, just like using Nazi symbolism. And it is for very good reasons.

In America, it doesn't make much of a difference whether you burn down a synagogue with a service going on inside or a barn with a hoedown going on inside. You'll get sentenced for arson and either manslaughter or murder either way.

In Germany, if you burn down the synagogue, you'll get a whole shit-ton of a sentence piled on top of that if your intentions were clearly anti-Semitic/anti-Judaist.

Google "Night of Broken Glass". Can you even imagine the U.S. National Guard raiding and burning synagogues, Jewish-owned shops, Jewish retirement homes and the like, murdering at least 1,000 Jews, all in one single night in 1938, ordered by (a precursor of) the NSA and at the behest of President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself?

-3

Feddit.org is a German server that sticks to German laws.

German laws do not prohibit you for removing comments on social media of people support a supermasist genocidal ideology

Germany has a special historical guilt towards Jews. You know, what with having murdered half of all Jews on the planet within less than a decade and intended to cull the other half as well.

German law did not force you to reply to my comment with more Israel represent jews bullshit. Israel discriminate ethopian jews, before the creation of the terrorist state it killed many jews with their terrorists attacks. For example during the bombing of king david hotel 17 jews wad murdered. Germany murdered 6 millions jews so i though germany would learn it lesson and not support another genocide , here it is supporting it in Gaza. Nazis also killed ton of communists and poles should germany tolerate if those groups do terrible things too. Should the countries involved in the transatlantic slave trade tolerate if a black country decide to attack a country who was involves in that black holocust?

In Germany, if you burn down the synagogue, you'll get a whole shit-ton of a sentence piled on top of that if your intentions were clearly anti-Semitic/anti-Judaist.

I don't remember germany condemning israel attack on the synaguoge in Iran. It is pretty clear germany is defending israel the settler colonial state not jews in general

I think you will still see users from lemmy.ml despite the instance block. I have blocked it about 2 years ago and its the only reason why I am still here. I hesitated at first because of the open source communities, but then I thought, fuck it

25

Yes, it only blocks the communities and servers showing up in your feed.

15
lemmy.world

15
Alexreply
lemmy.ml

I joined the .ml server because it was the dev server. Looking at the communities I subscribe to most are on other servers. Occasionally people ascribe beliefs to me based on my home server but so far I haven't bothered looking for a new home.

When I first joined there were a bunch of popular instances that closed down so choosing a non-dev server seemed like a bit of a gamble. Same with mastodon servers.

6
lokalhorstreply
feddit.org

That's something that is criticized often - that the devs are not independent but instead try to push their instance as the "main instance". But yeah I guess there are a lot of people like you. Don't forget there is no Karma system, it does no harm to change the account from time to time, I do it yearly.

2
lemmy.ml

Lemmy.ml is like 8th in the list on join-Lemmy.org. Doesn’t seem to be pushing?

4
lokalhorstreply
feddit.org

The Lemmy software developers are the admins of lemmy.ml at the same time. Instead of being neutral, they push their questionable political agenda onto the instance. lemmy.ml is 8th now, but 3 years ago that was different. Also the most open source communities have been there, I don't know really if that changed meanwhile.

2
lemmy.ml

If you started a project, wouldn’t you list your server up top? The fact they changed it should tell you all you need to know. Also it’s their instance, they can do with it what they want. That’s like saying someone painted their house a color that is questionable. Block it and move on.

Sorry I just don’t think it’s right to pass judgement on people for doing what they want with their project or instance especially when they designed it in a way that anyone can set up their own instance do do what THEY want with their own.

7
lokalhorstreply
feddit.org

If you started a project, wouldn’t you list your server up top?

You can bet I would. But when the participation in the project grew in the way Lemmy did, I would step down from my instance admin rule and pass to someone else. I am not saying they should unlist the instance, all I say is that the roles should not be mixed.

Block it and move on.

That's what I did, but that doesn't mean I can't talk about the topic here.

Sorry I just don’t think it’s right to pass judgement on people for doing what they want with their project or instance

I can understand what you mean. The problem is that this constellation prevent Lemmy from growing because people are weirded the fuck out by the statements that are being made on lemmy.ml and especially the moderation strategy of the developers. I can recommend taking a look at [email protected] and sort by Top. Some of the stuff is about others members of the tankie triad and some is bs, but it quickly gets clear who you are talking to.

1
Alexreply

Hmm I see nothing - I guess the posts don't federate back to .ml?

2
piefed.social

The Lemmy software developers are the admins of lemmy.ml

One of many reasons I'm on PieFed not Lemmy

-1
lemmy.ml

the main reason you're on piefed is because this is how you behave when zionism comes up:

3

Without the context, it's difficult to discuss. But I don't see why we should favour one religious extremist group over the other tbh

0
Richardreply
lemmy.world

Nah, seeing folks from there is fine, but i would rather not see their posts

5

I agree. I only mentioned it because your motivation was the list of blocked users from ml you already had.

3

It used to be the case that, aside from hexbear and Lemmygrad (both defederated from on your instance), 90% of the most trolling comments came from Lemmy.ml. However, immediately after Trump won the USA election, I started seeing that behavior all over the place. Perhaps that timing is mere coincidence, but regardless, blocking all users on that instance (which PieFed allows you to do) no longer works to keep the most batshit insane takes from my feed.

Also I have consistently seen people commenting on that instance (and on Lemmygrad) about how proud they are that no does not mean no, but rather that they need to push forward harder - by making alts to mask their associations - and which they readily do.

So I was adding historical context to your statement here: I see what you mean, now, but a couple years ago things were notably different. Then again, obviously not all trolls are the same, and trolls exist everywhere - which I should know, being one myself (as people keep telling me:-).

2

Experimenting with blocklists is fine and how you find your comfort zone on Lemmy.

I once made an experiment in which I blocked lemmy.world - not out of spite, but to just see what the rest of Lemmy has to offer. Turns out, quite much!

Still, too many niche communities are hosted on .world, so here I am again.

24

"Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist"

Which country do you consider yourself a leftist in?

24

I'm on .ml and just don't see this. I moved here from .world after the cat food ban. The stupidity burned too much for me to stay there. I'm unsubscribed to most of the lemmy communities where the political crap is, so maybe that helps.

22

People should block users and instances that they dont want to see. They are in charge of their account. Then you wont have to feudpost about these people you blocked because you wont see them.

22

I have never noticed any problem with lemmy.ml.

Block all the low-quality meme/image content if lemmy feels tiring. Stop consuming garbage.

22

Pro russia propaganda is generally contained in ml own communities. The tiresome thing for me is zionist tolerant instances and communities and fake palestinians supporter who both side the colonizers and the colonized or defend rhe democrats support for the colonizers

20

I find the whining and complaining more annoying.

It's easy to block content you don't want (or switch to software that supports it). If it annoys you, block it.

19

Why not just use your subscriptions? People use all and then act all entitled when they have to deal with everything. It's weird.

17

It sure would be swell if people could, at the very least, elevate to a 2d view of politics. Hearing the majority of quadrants II, III, and IV all referred to all "far-left" is confusing at best.

17

I just moved to lemmy.zip from dbzer0 and before that, world, mainly because I want to be the one blocking, I don't want my instance to block for me. I must not be subscribed to the right places, because I just don't see a whole lot of CCP/RUS apologia? I'm pretty good at passing over shit I know I won't agree with though, so it might just not be registering.

17

ML is not far-left, it pretends to be in order to spread pro-Putin, pro-Russian, and pro-Republican state propaganda because they know it’s destroying America. ML and Russia are about as socialist as the Nazis claimed to be.

16

Damn, it's been awhile since I've seen one of these "greetings fellow leftists" posts whining about .ml.

14

I use Lemmy.world. I don’t see any of this drama, about cat food or leftists. I do see posts that used to be regular at Reddit, with decent discussion.

12
fedia.io

People were complaining about .ml long before I thought it was justified, but I looked again recently and yeah, maybe. This instance doesn't federate with it so I don't see it often. Based on my quick impressions the other day it's gotten worse. Not that it's an "echo chamber" and I don't mind hanging out with communists, but there's too much low-quality noise.

Personally I wouldn't block the whole server if it were up to me. There are still good people there. Just be quick to block the people and posts you really object to.

12

I have an account on an instance that still federates with hex and grad. They make ML seem almost tame. But when your lead developer and admin names their account for a genocidal revolutionary. Who had to be assassinated by his own people to be free. You can be sure there are going to be some very warped takes, and bad community cultivation.

That said I have ml visitors to communities I mod and generally have no issue with. There are a few I see posting regularly on the greater fediverse that have a high net positive vote totals on my voyager client. So we should definitely try not to paint with a broad brush. Even if we're all familiar with the toxicity of some.

I would still warn to be cautious, I feel that sites like Reddit fell a bit because it became compromised both at the admin and the moderator level by bad actors that slowly got promoted to positions of power.

Anyone with authoritarian sympathies should not be given the keys to moderate instances, imo. Users should condemn all forms of authoritarianism if they want to be more trusted.

4

I agree. And was vocal as well with some of rimu's actions as well as the recent admiral patric meltdown. The dot world crew aren't perfect. There was a post earlier today regarding a mastodon ban. What exactly is lemmy.ml?

The hacker known as lemmy.ml is a highly dangerous individual.

And how would I block it?

Just pray 🙏.

7

Ive blocked dozens of instances because i dont like them. Just do it and move on -- no, nobody else was getting tired of lemmy because the rest of us block instances and users we dont like and enjoy our experience instead.

7

My feeds pretty decent. I don't block instances outside of an accident. I block plenty of users and communities though and it works for me. Don't get me wrong the vast majority of my blocks is not that the communities are bad. just that its easier to block what your not interested in and peruse all than peruse subscribed if you want to find new things.

7

Amen brother.

There are a few instances where like 90% of the problematic content and users come from. Blocking them makes the fediverse FAR more enjoyable and pleasant. And reduces the harassment and violent content by 90%

Sane leftists need to shut out the insane ones. Those folks dont' care about politics in any actionable way. All they care about is feeling superior to everyone else based on their theoretical beliefs and their weird cult of worship they have created with facts don't matter and alternative history is the truth.

I'm currently debating with myself whether to block sh.itjust.works next, because it seems to be becoming another hotbed of bad actors who are here to be purely negative and hostile to other users and push extremist content, and if you counter point them they just harass the shit out of you and follow you around across various communities.

in fact a lot of folks i blocked on other instances are now posting from that instance under the same username. seems like some folks just keep swapping instances once enough folks have blocked them on another instance for their harassment and horrible posts.

Indeed. This year being a midterm election in the United States I don't expect to see too much generally. But we've only got a couple years before the heavy influx again. Whether it's bad faith propaganda, or ignorant blue staters treating national elections like their insulated local ones. They're both tiring and not helpful.

Democrats especially don't need help losing. They're very capable all by themselves. And sadly don't care about protest votes or undecideds. Nationally all that does is suppress votes, in favor of the worst options. But thankfully DSA has been pushing local candidates across the country showing they are viable and can win. Hopefully Sanders showed enough people that there are other options, and they might be ready to support a DSA adjacent/endorsed presidential candidate. If they can be brave enough to poll their own members on the subject. SMH

4

You can block the instance itself and do that; users posting outside the instance's own communities are not blocked via the instance blocking feature. It essentially just mass blocks all the communities on the instance, not any of the users.

1

Same goes for any sub - that's what the Block feature is for, folks. Not necessarily to insulate yourself from different points of view - some subs are just the same shit over and over.

I wouldn't need a "clean" front page because I don't feel threatened by people having different opinions than me. I wish you good luck with your clean front page and clean mind. Hopefully you can find some peace now.

Judging by the comments here, you just need to block .ml, .world and piefed to block all the assholes? 🤔🤔🤔

4

I mean when i see a post i dont like i check the user history and instance history. If it's a long lost of similarly shitty posts i block one or both. If it's not, well everyone has bad days wcyd. I'm just surprised that the concept of blocking instances and users you dont like is such a popular new post today in august 2026.

3

I find it very irritating when you want to change the world and insist on using only one particular instance. That's not agitating the masses. I'm fine with blocking. I couldn't stand any more Japanese comics and started blocking those users one after another. Constant dopamine.

3

I won't block anyone even if they're straight up assholes because even a broken clock is right twice a day and I actually have learned some information that was true from them.

That being said though the ones who say North Korea is a utopia and USA is fighting a proxy war with Russia through Ukraine (true) but that Russia giving drones and military equipment to Iran isn't the same thing and that isn't a proxy war or that Mao was some sort hero of the people (I could definitely go on from here) those people are idiots and its very easy to look up anything they say and see that its complete bullshit.

I'm still not gonna block them. Hit them with an "Ok" and move on with your day. As soon as you pull out the graphs or cite multiple sources they will just ban you so there's no point in fucking with them. Until they post on here from North Korea and prove us all wrong, you can easily disregard any of the bullshit they say.

That said the ONE person I have ever blocked on Lemmy was someone who posted a cartoon picture of a little kids butt on the self hosted community. I still don't understand what that was about and I not only blocked them but reported them for that too. But other than child stuff, I probably won't ever block anyone even if they're complete assholes.

3

i've been fedi-curious for a while now and dragged my feet on the threadiverse for the longest time because my first impression of it was all the tankie stuff, i just assumed the whole thing was tankies and shuned the threadiverse entirely. after learning about piefed, and seeing discussions around lemmy in general, i realized it was more complicated and decided to give it a second chance via piefed. i've been relatively active for a few months now!

3

One instance being moderated a way you don't like is an incredibly silly reason to revoke support for the development of software you use regularly. Like not just irrelevant, but literally missing the point of the software they're developing.

4

I won’t financially support .ml and I switched from lemmy for that reason.

I support piefed’s development.

6

For what? For being too edgy for your tastes in an online forum? Because they moderate an instance differently than you want? In an ecosystem where people can block and defederate instances with software THEY built?

This is clownish. They're weird tankies who also write software they give away for free. They don't build blocklists to secretly shape the Lemmy Fediverse or even force you to hear their opinions. They have nearly zero political impact on the world at large but quite a lot of impact on federated software, but apparently annoying you through inaction is your red line.

1
lemmy.world

I don't see where you're from, only your username, which I thought meant we were on the same instance. I'm on Lemmy.world, and i thought mine (our) instance defederated from .ml. So why do you, would have to block them? What am I misunderstanding?

2

I’m giving this a try.

Not sure if it’s my issue, because I don’t really see much pro-China / pro-Russia crap. But I am exhausted by the nonstop extreme left groupthink.

2
lemmy.world

I think Lemmy is radicalizing.

It’s not just Lemmy.ml either. I used to love dbz0, almost switched from lemmy.world, but now all the non-political content is withering away, and most of what I see is just absolutist, anarchist post. The admin is fine with explicit calls to violence against pretty much anyone.

And that’s fine. It’s their instance, they can their thing. But it’s so extreme I don’t even find satisfaction interacting with the instance anymore, like it’s a single community with one topic.

And I don’t mean to single them out. I have similar feelings from many instances, including Lemmy.world.

I’ve even seen some pretty extreme stuff on blajah, which I used to picture as a wholesome LGBTQ+ instance! Which I adore… until it’s not so wholesome.

What’s worse, Lemmy users don’t seem to care.

I’ll point out some off-topic discussion in a thread, and I just get piled on. Like, not every single Lemmy conversation has to involve statements about western imperialism or the futility of democracy or whatever, but apparently it does on Lemmy.ml, and it feels like it’s spreading.

That was more of a rant than I intended.

But I am concerned about this new internet place I like. I’ve seen one or two other Reddit clones wither away from political radicalization, too.

Just use tesseract and have us all automatically blocked then if we're all scary radicals. I see you were defending admiral patrick a few weeks ago, surprised you aren't hiding behind it still. It's right there for anyone who needs everything sanitized and corporate approved for them.

Leftism and pro LGBTQIA comms are not radical, violent, or terroristic, and trying to suggest they are is going to get you shit on here. It's by design to keep the fash out. Lemmy is overwhelmingly a leftist space, and most leftists have no problem with telling it how it is, especially during the largest global resurgence in fascism since WWII.

At a certain point, if everyone around you is a problem, maybe you should consider the possibility that the source of your discomfort is much more localized.

12
lemmy.world

I was not defending the tesseract dev, what they did is inexcusable. That app can burn.

I sympathized with them some, though. I get what they were trying to do in their head, on some level.

If you think the more extreme parts of Lemmy are representative of “everyone around you,” as in the larger public in my life, I don’t even know where to begin with that. We live in different worlds I guess.

And why would I ever got back to Twitter or Reddit? They're cesspools. What would make you think I'd ever touch them?

Stop acting like being on that list was exclusive to any demographic.

I'm on that and I've been called every political label under the sun as an insult on here.

3

You’re not wrong, dbzer0 is fine with people having profiles like this:

I think israel is committing war crimes and genocide right now and need to be reined in and leaders put in jail but calling for blanket murders like this is over the line.

4

I can see where you're coming from. At this point I'm not interested in engaging with content that has a negative impact on my mental health, even if I support those views. There's some extent of irony in this behavior, but I'm just tired of being constantly bombarded with reminders of our sad world. I don't use typical social media, and every once in a while when I catch a whiff of a friend's Tiktok or Instagram feed, I'm completely blown away by how much content there is designed to trigger a negative, or often an angry reaction. This was a big reason for me to leave Reddit and I'm trying to avoid this as much as possible on Lemmy.

I'm still very new here and still trying to figure this whole fediverse thing out, I've only been here for about a month, give or take. Like some other user suggested were common for newbies to Lemmy, I chose the most active instance without really thinking about it, and always scroll through /All. During my short experience here, I have blocked so, so many communities and instances already. Blahaj is one of them, not because I disagree with the importance or need to stand up for LGTQ+ rights, but because I feel that the general content posted there is naturally based on a politically driven agenda, which again is all fine, but I browse this shit before bed to escape my already constant anxiety, and I'm here for memes and a good time. I'm not interested in content that is either dystopian doomerism, American circus politics, war reports, or what ever depressing reminders of our current speedrun to degrade human life, in basically all categories.

I get that people are actively frustrated, angry, in need to vent, or in need of other's to help them feel less alone, that they're not the only ones who think the world is losing their minds. This space is perfect for people to discuss those things, to find likeminded people and even challenge their believes from other's opinions. But that's not what I'm looking for. I could just make it easy for myself and sub to the lighthearted communities that fits to my need and just scroll through that instead, but I enjoy the random posts from communities I wouldn't find unless I was scrolling through /All, like this post for example.

Instead, I just block everything that has a negative reaction that makes me chose to engage in that content from my side. Like another news article about Musk posting something dumb on Twitter once again, for example. If I read the title and want to click the post to read more, I stop to ask myself if feel that if the reason to want to read more stems from anger or frustration, if it does I try to move on. Not because I feel that the topic shouldn't be discussed or that it shouldn't have an angry reaction, but because it's fucking everywhere already and I'm not trying to feed my depression further. Call it an ostrich behaviour, but it makes my experience a little better.

yep, this is exactly why i have blocked those instances myself.

i'm not an extremist. i don't hate everyone who is different than me, etc. and i don't want to interact with folks who think that way or promote content that pushes hate and rage and self-victimhood. according to a lot of folks on those instances, that viewpoint means I'm a fascist capitalist Nazi who want to murder them implicitly... because anyone who isn't with them, is against them.

and yeah i didn't block them 2 years ago, but over time that stuff kept getting worse and worse and more prevalence and the users from the instances kept drive-by commenting and sending me messages taht were pure vitriol and hate.

there is no 'winning' by viewing those types of folks or the content they post on lemmy. so blocking is really the best way to improve your experience.

i'm just here to like, relive old reddit when it was funny and goofy and nerdy. i'm interested in politics, but from a very different place than most political posters here are, and I get demonized for like... wanting to promote understanding and find common ground. but i'm clearly a big centrist fascist bootlicker, or something.

Okay just block them, and block everything else you dont want to see, idk yeah theyre a bunch of crazy wannabe communists, i agree we all agree, just block and move on, like what else is there? Doxx them? That makes no sense, right?

it's crazy people who are butthurt ivan drago lost in rocky iv, they're not worth your attention -- quite frankly this couldn't be a better advertisement for lemmy.mi or whatever it is. So i guess that's my rant, stop reacting with content you don't like. If something real and local to your geography is happening, yes, go to a protest, volunteer helping underserved communities. But if it's on freaking social media (federated or otherwise) just block and move on, dont feed into it. We don't even know what corner of the world they actually live in. Think about all the horrible people in the world in positions of power -- they all get tons of negative attention online and they harness that negative attention into real-world benefits for them.

I think Lemmy is radicalizing.

Ever since the reddit migration, troll instances who already existed on the fediverse saw a shiny new plaything.

When their home instances became defederated, their users spun up new ones, and were welcomed with open arms under the assumption they were new.

That bought them access to admin channels, were they could socially manipulate legitimate admins of major instances.

People who know controlled relatively large social media platforms...

People who didn't receive any training and may not have had the best social skills to begin with.

So, what I'm trying to say is, it's not all that they're radicalized in the sense that their views changed organically. They're radicalized like people taken advantage of by FBI informants into "planning" an attack.

The people telling them to do this stupid shit don't think it's a good idea, they just want to burn it down to watch it burn.

Lemmy.ml was/is my first foray into the whole thing and the dogma/irrationality/hivemind has been really disheartening (for a community I had figured would filter people like that out due to its' size relative to reddit or other normal websites). Thanks for this, i'm going to try it.

My lemmy experience got soooo much better once I blocked hexbear and ml instances. Kudos to you for your peace of mind.

I did the same thing and I fully agree

I also ban any .ml user on sight

It’s been great for my mental health too

It’s called cognitive dissonance, the less your worldview makes sense the more tiresome it becomes to hear counter arguments. You used to be able to just dismiss them as „russian trolls“ but now that doesn’t feel right anymore, you feel like you actually have to engage, and this takes energy. Much easier to just shut it out completely, just take comfort in your personal bubble, and only engage with straw men arguments, the ones that are obviously wrong (and hence not used by anyone).

Have fun in your bubble, have fun believing that Russia is gonna collapse any day now for the coming 8 years, the 57th nuclear sanctions package is really gonna do it, have fun believing that the army that spent 4 years taking Sheviakivka is gonna be in Berlin the week after, have fun thinking the people that sold you the Gaza genocide have the best intentions when they say war is the only answer in Ukraine, wish you all the best.

What if social networks had public blocklists that users could decide to use or not for themselves? It could be run like a comm, but slightly different. A user would create the blocklist and ultimately control it. "Posts" to the list could be proposals for additions or removals of users, comms, or instances. Votes on those posts guide the mod(s) on accepting the change or not. Apps could subscribe and update automatically.

I've been thinking about this ever since the tesseract debacle.

I want to do this, but they established themselves as the main Lemmy instance before people caught on and it’s too much of Lemmy.

Lmao "far left propaganda" what's that? Everyone should be fed and housed, equal rights?

Another day, another .world user complaining about .ml users.

Usually the ones complaining are usually abrasive pro-US imperialist types.

I'm from the UK, so screw Russian and American foreign policy and those that shill for China make me nauseous. I'm on .ml from when .world couldn't keep their servers up. My main alt died with lemm.ee (RIP).

-2

My comment questioning if celebrating the deaths of US soldiers was such a good look for them got removed by mods on lemmy.ml/c/worldnews

Apparently this was an irredemable position that goes against everything the average .ml mod believes in (shitposting on niche, far-left sites).

All the fucking libscolding about ml existing

You realize that ml develops the platform. Honestly perhaps piefed is more your speed. Or maybe go watch Hutch or something idk.

God I’m glad I’m not a Reddit liberal anymore.

-3

Ouch. Must have been difficult for you. Hope you feel better now when your Frontpage consists of things you can agree with. :)

-4

I've noticed some lemmy clients refuse to block lemmy.ml. Take that what you will

Edit: your downvotes mean you wish to hide the truth

-8

I''m much more upset about the much more prevalent imperialist propaganda hyping up the right wing democrats as saviors and presenting Luke warm social democrats as radicals to either support or hate but you seem to be a fan of this overwhelming disgusting support on this site for racism and imperialism.

Another insufferable .world Liberal trying to deny the imperialist atrocities committed by the US which are the cause of most suffering worldwide because he wants to talk about his own free healthcare afforded to him by said colonialism.

treatlerite

The term originated from X user @posting_forever and their followers and was originally used to criticize liberals unable to concede that their luxurious lifestyles often come at the cost of less prosperous people or nations.
