people did that work, just because elon musk tells people what to do doesn't mean those people should be exonerated from the consequences as well. the people doing the work sure as shit falls out there ass, know there was no permit. if there no permit, then why not a great fire ball in the night sky.

11

Yes. I'm pretty sure it's a contractor's job to get the permits. Is it not?

Not removing blame from Elon. Just smearing the blame around cause all those fucks are responsible

5

They are just going to call it another "Sacrifice Zone" like they do the cancer alley in Louisiana arent they?

Some people just are expendable for progress, what can the country do?

quokk.au

Im sure the American legal system will get those wheels of justice spinning on this in a few years.

32

No, but Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep will win hella Oscars playing the plucky white women who "take them down."

My city finally got a court order against a billionaire for unpermitted building that allows us to bulldoze his house. Just took 7 years in court to get the ruling...

And instead of bulldozing the house, we were able to use the court order to strongarm them into fixing their site so it no longer damages the environment, their neighbors, or city infrastructure.

The upside for the city there (aside from having to bid out and manage a major project in-house) is that we get a lot more tax revenue from a house that is brought into compliance than a scarred, demolished site.

One man harming thousands. Sounds like a crime that would be punishable by death in olden times.

68

People like this would be shot. People would group together and hire gunmen to get rid of criminals in the old west.

Of course their security was just a few body guards and that's it. Nobody was living in high tech buildings separate from everyone else.

10

There was an incident in South Korea some years ago where a greedy developer built an apartment building with substandard concrete; the building later collapsed and killed a few hundred people. The guy was tried and convicted and as he was being frog-marched to his sentencing hearing, friends and relatives of the victims were coming out of the crowd and beating him while his escorts just looked away.

It's really enjoyable to imagine that happening here in the US, but then it's enjoyable to imagine winning the lottery, too.

Ozymandias

Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Along with any dipshit using AI to begin with. As much of a complete piece of shit as musk is (and he is a HUGE piece of shit), the end users of this shit share in the blame too. Any idiot using grok or whatever the fuck anthropic call their horseshit are culpable.

To a proportionate degree yes, but AI is being shoved down the throats of workers and subsidized by the companies providing it too. I have some sympathy for the clueless grandma, or the person who's genuinely lost their mind thanks to this.

1
lemmy.zip

I have zero sympathy for the willfully ignorant. There’s more than enough information and evidence that this shit is horrible on many fronts, and anyone who has managed to ignore it is toeing into dangerously stupid territory. Making excuses for dumb assholes is how we’ve ended up with the stupidest cunts ever running things.

1

Dario Amodei is the one renting out the servers while pretending to he's the Wholesome Ethical AI Guy. His behavior is nearly on par with Musk here.

I'm much more interested in him (behavior that's extremely intentional, with the added slime of being deceptive and yet enjoying a ton of undeserved, fawning PR) than the average clueless Meemaw. Similar to many other trash systems, you have to look at the people maintaining the system, not the people using it.

2

It's nice to see Elon following in his father's footsteps of hurting black people in an effort to get even more needlessly rich. Honestly though, somebody should take Elon back to South Africa and hurl him down a mineshaft.

Funny how the self proclaimed savior of humanity keeps treating regulations like optional DLC: If anyone else ran 59 gas turbines without permits they would be buried in fines. Billionaires call it innovation, everyone breathing nearby calls it another asthma attack waiting to happen.

82

Don't worry, it's only affecting a poor area. No billionairs are affected.

33

keeps treating regulations like optional DLC

He, like any shillionaire, sees people as NPCs.

That's why he was so enthusiastic to kill infants, children, teens and adults by cutting USAID.

If he's ever admitted to a hospital, I genuinely hope that he's left to suffer and rot.

10

I hope Elon dies and I hope it's painful; dying would be the first positive thing he ever contributed to humanity

Shoot him into space on one of his or Bezos' rockets. Watch him explode as a result of the very thing he tried to accomplish.

9

Spacexs operational rockers are a standard of reliability

Blue needs a operational launchpad first, they kinda blew up their only one

Also that would be a rather quick death

2

It needs to die ugly. All the musk children need to die or be sterilized. Everything it cares about needs to end, and be thrown into wherever we decide to dispose of used nuclear fuel.

It's shocking that they just seem to sit out there in the open. Afaik they are very delicate and fragile machines.

What would happen if I by accident fly my drone into those fans?

4
AlteredEgoreply
lemmy.ml

Probably very illegal! Drones would be relatively easy to track versus for example bullets from a random hunting rifle. They should really label every single bullet of ammunition in the US.

4
lemmy.today

Golly, can you imagine if someone maybe hooked up a small tube to fire shotgun shells FROM a drone? That would be awful!

2

you mean those military drones that basically do exist already. Hack, I think soon be available on Alibaba as well ><. But instead of a real gun its more like the "Salt Guns" (yeah this is a thing as well now eh)..

call me a conservative, but I think we need to stick to traditional laws . . .

11

You mean good traditional values the conservatives push for? Like the good ol days.

I swear I read an article about this months ago... is it the same data center and they still didn't stop the gas turbines, or is this another one?

Either way: fuck Musk and fuck the government who laid the foundations for such atrocities.

106

No, Grok has been classified by the DOJ as vital national security infrastructure and is not allowed to be shut down.

22
Jesus_666reply
lemmy.world

This would be a great time for an injunction to force the data center to shut down all of those turbines until the matter has been resolved legally.

Of course you need to be able to pay for a lawyer who convinces a judge to pass that injunction.

10
feddit.uk

A judge that Musk and Trump have bought? Or a real judge? Do you have any of those left?

4

I'm pretty sure that if a judge would grant that injunction there'd be one less a week later.

I was landing in Memphis a few weeks ago, and you can see the literal cloud of pollution surrounding this thing. There's a distinct haze you can see centered on the thing.

I will add this to the list of reasons I'm happy not to live in the USA, as soon as I manage to add new page to it.

7

There is a joke in my country that even apocalypse will come to us with 30 year delay.

3

Can someone do something about this racist Afrikaans piece of shit?

-1

I fail to see the relevance of race on this context. Its like they want to pit us against each other but this is a class issue. Its us vs the oligarchs and they are presently winning

4

Musk comes from South African apartheid blood money. His grandfather moved to the country because he liked said apartheid, iirc.

The US also suffers from an abhorrent history and current climate of racism on top of its deeply ingrained classism.

Not sure how deliberate the choice was, but exploiting and hurting marginalized communities seems to be a honed skill of the Musk family (not counting his kids who disowned him ofc, especially his daughter)

Edit: Yep, I was right. From Wikipedia:

Haldeman's move to South Africa was motivated by support for apartheid, and he was a supporter of the ruling National Party of South Africa. Errol Musk said of his wife's family: "They were very fanatical in favor of apartheid... [Maye's] parents came to South Africa from Canada because they sympathised with the Afrikaner government."[23]

We're talking about America here. Everything is a race issue. Its almost apartheid.

I guess the turbines were build near a neighbourhood that mostly houses black people.

35

Yeah OK, I take your point.

I don't disagree with that. Generally the way I see it is the capitalists love identity based politics cause it divides us but really we have a lot of common struggles. I'm not saying I am going to pretend to understand totally what its like to be black in America and I see that are different challenges but I don't want to lose focus on the primary issue which is wealth inequality

1
db2reply

Yeah it's a class issue. Being white alone won't get you in their club. But they also really hate darker skinned people and go out of their way to be extra shitty to them.

The two things aren't exclusive of one another.

25
Tixoreply

You mean like the CEOs of Microsoft and Google or?

-1

They definitely don't hate people of Indian decsent as much as they hate african-americans. And a few successful people with darker skin does not indicate that the regular people are treated fairly?

6

I suspect its more to highlight musk's contribution to systemic racism and race-based inequality than to try and divide us by color lines. In an ideal world, racist shit like this should unite us even more through our shared disgust at how abhorent their behavior is.

I guess it's easier to ask for forgiveness (pay a fine) than it is to get permission (acquire a permit).

2

Well, I know the fine doesn't care about the environment, if that helps.

JC, every other post on here is about data centers, Elon Musk or White House legislation. Can’t we talk about technology instead of US politics?
