Maybe we can start a GoFundMe, something like "Help me get my life back in order by destroying an OpenAI datacenter"

5

Oh no, you couldn't possibly take out all of the AI data centers. That would be so awful for the shareholders.

79

Noo, you're going to hurt so many people. Like 10 or so people will be so sad. :((

We dare you. We double dog dare you.

Honestly... why the fuck am I sitting here in the US rooting for Iran.

Oh yeah... because "Trump".

But when you dig into the history of the US in the 20th and 21st centuries, you start to notice this isn’t just a “Trump” thing. Outside of WW1 and WW2 (though the US had spurious reasons for joining WW1), the US has been the bad guys in every other instance.

The US is the imperialist hegemon, Trump has just been more open about it.

Trump has also been more corrupt and stupid about it. He's not being honest about it, he's being flagrant about being a tool of the giant corporations.

11

Also more open about just drifting the fuck out of his followers. He sold them a $2 bill for $100. He also pump and dumped not one ... but TWO crypto coins.

Why are they calling it Stargate? Is it supposed to have some space application?

Anyway good luck Iran. Maybe this is the exit strategy all along for the AI bubble. “Well, we can’t do the AI anymore because Iran bombed all our data centers. Sorry folks, everyone can go home now. We would have done the AI that totally worked the way we totally said it did, and it would have been awesome, but Iran ruined it for all of us. Let us never speak of this again.”

29

Maybe this is the exit strategy all along for the AI bubble.

Either that or it's the trigger that gets Trump to bail out the industry. "We need this to win the war" is the new "to big to fail."

I hope you're right though

14

Let'r rip. What a timeline to be in where I'm cheering for this.

27
lemmy.ml

I'm guessing they're gonna do it if the US attacks their infrastructure further. They're using the threat as leverage.

22
Hadriscusreply
jlai.lu

yea, my gut reaction was to wonder why they're telegraphing it, but obviously it's wiser to keep it as leverage

Can't wait to see it blow up though

9

Seeing how unhinged Trump is and that he's continued to escalate, I do think it's more likely than not Iran will blow it up eventually.

14

They'll do it Tuesday. You mean like that kind of "stop talking"?

Except for the environment and also everyone wanting cheap GPUs and SSDs.

-25

I have not said that. All I'm saying is that destroying high end hardware is bad for the environment, because it will lead to more manufacturing. It is wasteful. Instead cut their power or something.

I feel like those are criticisms that should be leveled at the people who built the thing specifically designed to exterminate life on the planet by heating it up as fast as is physically possible with current technology.

If a machine is destroying life, it would be nice to be able to reuse bits for farming or something but just stopping the extinction is sufficient.

Execute all executives.

NOOOOOOOOOOO I NEEEEED AI BECKY AND UNREALISTIC PET INTERACTION VIDEOS!!!!

DON'T DO IT YOU MONSTERS!!!!

lemmy.world

If this wasn't so tragically real, it would be almost fun to see these grown ass super serious people on both sides sound like they are cutting a promo for a wrasslin' match.

They don't destroy and murder. No, they devastate, they bring back to the stone age, they utterly annihilate. Is this a performance? Or is the whole world now in the hands of complete idiots?

14

Dangerously unhinged extremist regime causes Iran to take disruptive action

13

Mark Tyson weeps for fascist lives, but spares not a tear for Iranian civilians, including primary school children.

Seems a poor strategy to announce your targets before you strike them...

7

Iran has frequently announced targets and given warnings to evacuate. It's been surreal that they've continued to sound like the adults after years of being told how evil they are. The US is indiscriminately bombing everything, while Iran seems to be playing the long game of building an international case for reparations and prosecution.

They could position missile/drone interceptors in preparation.

-1
ski11erboireply
lemmy.world

Those don't seem to be working as well as Israel and the US hoped.

16
lemmy.world

Maybe the goal is to waste interceptors on a shitty data center thats going to get blown up anyway because the interceptors dont work

13

Which would leave other targets open to attack since we don't have enough counter drone stuff to defend everything. We're playing chess here not checkers.

5

Unlike a certain "country" nearby that does so without warning, and then a second time to take out the rescue groups trying to save children as well

17

On the other hand, if my workplace was on a list of announced missile targets, I'd stay away.

Assuming that there's no real chance of their enemy setting up a defense in time:

  • It reduces probability of civilian causalities (improves their international image, reduces incentives for affected people to join the fight against them)
  • If there is some failure in the attack and the center isn't disabled, they still reduced productivity. I'd say indefinitely
  • Tactic could theoretically be used to threaten or feint. For example, publicly list five target but only bother bombing three, and you get the benefits of scaring away people at the other two without spending weapons. This could also be used to manipulate enemy logistics, like moving their defenses or response teams to one place and then attacking another.
17

That's cause they don't actually want to strike them. They will if they have to, but their goal is to prevent the US from hitting their civilian infrastructure by telling them what they'll hit in retaliation.
And the data centers are only step 1.
Iran could kill the Gulf States entirely by hitting the desalination plants.

14

It isn't when you have complete tactical superiority and you want to intimidate your opppnents

4

It's cause UAE did a big chunk of the funding and wanted it to be built there in order to market themselves as a tech hub.

It's a war crime, but nothing of relevance will be lost, i say go for it.

No it isn’t. These American tech companies made the mistake of taking contracts from the US military, and are legitimate targets.

Really? Civilian contractors are legitimate targets? How interesting.
I'm not saying murican Big Tech is innocent, but no, i don't think they're legitimate targets as per internationally perceived rules of engagement (yet).

-13

They are literally using these data centers for target selection and surveillance. How is that not a war machine? By your logic nothing the US military uses is a legitimate target because they don’t actually own the tanks and planes and missiles, they contract that all out to Blackwater and Lockheed etc.

23
lemmy.ca

Get real. Allied forces bombed factories all throughout WW2 and the US nuked civilian targets in Japan.

The idea that wars have laws and rules is hilarious, because US has broken all of them with no consequences in 80 years.

Even Obama drone striked entire villages, cowardice is what the US military does best.

3

Oh look, a believer in the "international rules-based order". I thought you were extinct! Glory be, maybe I'll see a moa yet!

4
lemmy.ml

Their argument is that the big tech companies are allowing their AI to be used to help target Iran (which they obviously are). This would arguably make the data centers powering the AI a legitimate military target

30

You can argue that because it's right.

The Allies bombed the shit out of Krups.

This is why you don't start wars of choice, because it wastes your blood and treasure.

In this case there's very few people inside and a whole lot of imperialist money tied up making a technology that people hate.

Iran understands the average American better than the Trump admin. Unfortunately the US government only listens to rural voters and people from Pennsylvania.

Not as bad, especially considering Iran is warning they'll be targeting those facilities, giving cilivians ample time to bail out.

What an absolute mind fuck this timeline is. We have a horrible regime attacking another horrible regime in the dumbest way possible and the attackee is threatening the attacker with destruction of something that will make the attacker's populace actually happy. I mean... I ... just...
