I'm guessing everyone with a brain doesn't want the US to go into Iran. It's like these people didn't learn anything from the last quarter century (and Vietnam before that).

52
lemmy.world

Learn things? With our education system??? Buddy! What do you think this is??? A different country? Who's this other country you're thinking about??? They sound like someone we need to go to war with! Do they have oil?

39

You don't need an education system, just past lived experience. Trump himself regularly lies about how he was always against the Iraq war. It's just one letter off, should be pretty easy to work out what would happen if they did the same thing again.

Not to mention the terrain of Iran would prove an order of magnitude more difficult to overcome. Afghanistan was already very difficult for our military, imagine MORE mountains

23

Yep, huge country, difficult terrain, largely homogeneous culture that goes back to the Persian Empire, homegrown weapons industry that can build their own drones and missiles. This is going to be more difficult by orders of magnitude.

24

To force the mining of the Straits of Hormuz, which will raise the price of oil enough to prop up Russia.

4

Eventually, Trump betrays everyone. Putin's had his hands full the last few years with his "special military operation" and hasn't been able to hold Trump's leash as tightly as he did in his first term.

3

after all that trouble they went to get military aid to be diverted from ukraine, indirectly via trump. probably realized the war near thier own country could destabalize the region which can draw in russia, possibly pakistan, india and china.

While she is a terrible person all around, she is consistent in asking "does this help America" in her idea of what "America" is supposed to be.

Evidently wasting billions on Israel, getting US soldiers killed and forbidding people in the US from voicing their opionion including on what to buy and not to buy is detrimental to the US.

Like if all the people scalping the Switch 2 had any clue how much they could make doing that, I'd be able to buy a Switch 2. Then I could do it too to make money to buy the Switch 2 games.

Well it might make a few bucks there but it's a pretty disgusting concept. I don't really understand how there are so many people utterly devoid of empathy.

I always assumed it was an innate human trait and that someone needed to have it abused out of their brain or have some kind of mental illness. Is it even possible that this many children being mistreated so badly or have undiagnosed mental illness? That is both a shocking idea and hard to believe.

The alternative is that it's a learned trait and the parents and educators of these people have failed them so spectacularly that they can't even begin conceive of their inability to identify with another person. The cognitive dissonance required to see a person that doesn't look exactly like them as not a person is astounding.

9

If you could sum it up in one word: isolationist.

This means low/no immigration, limiting cultural access to 'home grown' culture and expelling anyone that doesn't conform to whatever her idea of 'American' is. The only 'good' part of that stance is that this also means they don't want to sign up to the traditional penchant for military adventurism you'll typically see from the right.

Kinda. MTG is ragging on Fox News, sure, but she's also both-sides'ing media outlets on the left with her full quote:

We have propaganda news on our side just as the left does

She's fishing for people to agree with her which legitimizes her claim that left-leaning news networks are just as untrustworthy as Fox News, which is an untrustworthy news outlet, but she doesn't say shit about Breitbart or OANN or any of the other right-wing superspreaders of misinformation.

So, she is a broken clock that's currently pointing at the correct time, but she did it in a way to sneak in an untruth or two in there hoping that people would pick up on that and amplify the message.

20

Look, fuck this racist asshole Marjory. But liberal news sources are also largely garbage. The NYT, for example (well respected by liberals) is constantly giving voice to reactionaries, lying by omission, supporting US imperialism and just generally upholding the status quo, even when it means normalizing/legitimizing fresh horrors from republicans.

7

I have not looked at the American mainstream press for a few months, but honestly cannot remember any broadcasters or papers who are decently covering all news

3

Putting the new York times and fox news in the same category is correct as far as I can tell. I don't oppose her calling NYT republican either.

I prefer "stopped clock," since broken clocks can often continue ticking, albeit at the wrong speed.

13
TheOakTreereply
lemm.ee

A broken clock, whether it ticks too fast or too slow, is still right at least once every 24 hours, I think.

The only exception would be one that ticks correctly but is not set to the right time (does this count as broken?)

3
chiliedoggreply
lemmy.world

If a 24-hr clock is one second slow per day, its correct once every 236 years.

5

I was thinking of an analog clock with 12 hours and no distinction of AM or PM... but if we're talking 24h clocks you are right.

1
Chip_Ratreply
lemmy.world

If it ticks faster than time than it would be right more than once (24hr time) a day, the faster it ticks the more times it will incidentally be correct (perhaps there is an allegory here..)

A clock that ticks slower than time would be right less than once a day, but it can never....

I feel like I need a simulator to understand this relationship actually....

2
TheOakTreereply
lemm.ee

I was thinking of analog 12hr clock with no distinction between AM and PM

I wonder if your 24hr clock example would be more intuitive as frequencies and phases?

1

I was also visualizing the round analogue clock face, but didn't want to muddy the water by saying "twice" when I guess it's technically only once, just no am/pm delineation.

I am puzzling over this at work now. I guess a fast clock could be right almost infinite times a day if it ran fast enough, but a slow clock can only be as slow as a whisper faster than stopped, which would mean it could be right alllllllllllllmost twice a day, but never twice a day.

1
prolereply

Russia is not so much "pro Iran" as it is keeping an ambiguous relationship with Israel and Iran. Russia let Israel bomb Iranian militias in Syria. Israel sold drones to Russia after Russia invaded Crimea. Israel even demanded Ukraine to just give up against Russia behind closed doors. Netanyahu praised Russia and Putin in the past months and Israel refrained from demanding sanctions on Russia since the full scale invasion 2022.

I believe that MTGs position is coming from a sincere "MAGA" position. Why should the US let Israel dictate what it is doing and what it is not doing? Why should the US on top of it pay billions to Israel for Israel to drag the US around?

This is one thing that bothers me. I hear people talk about Trump's policies being isolationist, but this flies in the face of that. It's not my ideal course for the country, but I just want consistency.

9

The trouble is, they don’t gaf about general policy, the only policy they care about is “what makes rich people richer” and that economic policy is ill-defined and has a lot of guesswork involved, so you can’t expect coherent or consistent policies aligned with traditional politics

During Trump's first term, Fox pushed back just slightly on some of the shit he was trying to pull. Turned out even Fox wasn't entirely comfortable with Trump being president. However, this backfired and pushed some viewers to OAN because Fox had spent the last couple decades training their viewers to hate anyone who even slightly opposes a Republican president. Of course, that increased OAN's profile, which got them on Trump's radar. Trump loves them because they won't stop sucking his dick, so he promotes them to his followers, so now a bunch of people that used to religiously watch Fox now religiously watch OAN and think that Fox isn't conservative enough.

They made a monster and it slipped its leash.
