Feature: Topic Fly Out

So I was just thinking, the way I look at PieFed is that I like to have the main site up, when I find an article I'm interested in I center wheel click it to open it in a new window and then keep going to find other articles. I then go look at all of the articles one at a time and then come back to the main website.

My thought is, what if hovering over the topic, or clicking it, caused a fly out. So the page splits and shows the article on the side or in a box hovering over the topic. A lot of times I just like to see the comments really and if I want the article then I just click through. But most times it's just to get a summary or make a quick comment. Think email client. Show the topics on the left and then clicking it opens the topic on the right.

Just a thought.

Return to Where You Left After Comment

Right now when I go to a post and read it, if I hit back, I go back to where I was at the point I found the interesting post. So I can keep scrolling from there.

However, if I leave a comment and hit back, I'm taken back to the post ( understandable ) but I hit back again and it takes me to the start of my feed. So I have to scroll through everything again to find where I left off.

Is there anyway to make it that I can get back to where I was reading?

Piefed Meme Search

Just now I used the classic "OH NO! Anyway" meme from Jeremy Clarkson. How many folks might have uploaded that before?

What if Piefed housed, or linked to some kind of service, that had a meme search.

This resolves 2 issues.

  1. Interactivity is more fun and easier for users.
  2. You can deduplicate storage. You'll no longer have 500 people uploading the same "OH NO! Anyway..." memes. This would also allow custom meme from other instances that could then be shared and grow the pool of built in memes, potentially deduping across all Piefed instances.

MAU vs UE

I know lots of folks are talking about Monthly Active Users when it comes to health of the Fediverse.

We use that to compare social medias and even ourselves, a social network, to each other.

I argue we should be focused on user engagement. I know LinkedIn has "impressions", but idk what that means.

So I wonder if there's a good way to generate this. Someone posting is the highest, commenting, subscribing, liking, disliking, and follow on down. I guess that would be a statistical model? But with diminishing returns. One SUPER ACTIVE ANNOYING poster does not a network make, but "media" it does.

I don't have a clue how this would work statistically. But I theorize, that while we're smaller MAU, our user engagement is significantly higher when population size is accounted for.

Is there any data anyone knows of to back this up or disapprove it? I'm pro small.social though, so maybe I'm wrong. Any data scientists in the Fediverse? :-D

Adding community pages - Suggestions

I like having piefed pull in peertube channels.

A few thoughts on this.

When I go to add the channel I have to add ! In front. It even errors and tells me I need it. So if it has to exist can Piefed check, if it's not there, Piefed manages it and adds it? It'd be a bit better end user experience.

Building on, having a way to do this is nice, but can it be merged into search? So someone searches name@server if it doesn't find an exact match can it just reach out and come back with it and say it's not added, but we can add it for you by clicking this button.

Idk the technical challenges, but this would also be massively helpful in smoothing out the experience.

Fediverse Sustainability Survey

As part of the work on Fediverse sustainability announced earlier this year, the Social Web Foundation is running our first Fediverse Sustainability Survey . We’re seeking operators, moderators and administrators of Fediverse sites, from the smallest to the largest, to fill out the anonymous survey and share information about how their instances work. If you help run an instance, please take the 10-15 minutes needed to fill out the survey. We need a lot of responses (hundreds!) to get statistically relevant data, so please feel free to share the link. We’re also on the lookout for operators of instances that are no longer running; there is a lot to learn about sustainability from servers that closed down, for whatever reason. We’ll publish findings here as part of our sustainability report, supplemented by interviews with selected respondents. Thanks!

Update: we hit a survey response limit in LimeSurvey — it’s been fixed. If you had a problem getting to the survey, it should be cleared now.

I'm not the creator, just passing this along.
