Yesterday someone asked if one could do something like this, here is my version, in case you missed it !

So many people on lemmy seem to not be the types to hate based on nationality, except for this. The only nationalities I have seen attacked on here are Trumpicans and the French. Trumpicans at least are an ideology, but what is happening with the French that makes them the exception?

And this is the moment I realized that German "tja" ("well") probably comes from French "tiens" even though I've had five years of French in school.
My understanding is french is the most Germanic of the romance languages, so I'd guess it came to them both from an older Germanic language
I don't think so. French "tiens" is a form of the verb "tenir" ("hold"). German "tja" is pronounced almost exactly the same and is only used as an interjection with a similar meaning but doesn't have any related forms that I could think of.
Especially the southern German dialects have quite a few words that originated as loan words from French so it's at least plausible. Could of course just be a coincidence as well. Languages are full of those.
Yeah. Definitely might be a false cognate (if even that). Always look up etymologies if they interest you! Because so many that people repeat aren't true. I was just speculating and hoped that was obvious, but maybe it wasn't to everyone.
Unlikely as many Germanic languages have it, with similar meanings. It's a variant of "ja", yes. Add a bit of laconicy and you can make "Well." a sentence in itself.

That did a surprisingly incomplete job of answering the question, if I'm being honest.
It's a photo sharing site using ActivityPub for the federation, but it's not Pixelfed.
I think it's well described there, way better than Lemmy and most other fediverse things.
Well, maybe, but if I had asked about Lemmy you wouldn't have given me a link, you'd have said "Fedi Reddit" and accurate or not that's all I would need to hear. I didn't get the feeling that this thing was just Instagram, so I was still a bit confused.

Additionally, why does age have anything to do with any of these questions? This feels like it was made by someone who doesn't have much experience with other humans and is unaware of the massive variety of opinions and attitudes among all age groups.

People above a certain age should begin to avoid social media and stick with more private forms of communication like email, phone calls, signal messages and f2f discussions. Once your ability to tell fact from fiction deteriorates enough, announcing your opinions publicly becomes increasingly problematic.
I know well informed people above even their 80st birthday and heard of some conspiracists, who still have to go to school. 🤨

Went to their website, clicked on the link that said "Click here to see the popular GnuSocial sites you can join", and it showed a completely empty list. That seems indicative of something. :)

I ran an instance a long time ago, back when quitter.se was the main instance.
Vernissage is undersold here somehow - in terms of quality and steady, reasonable development without 100 side-projects and permanent babbling it has turned to my preferred choice of putting my pics online, also showing-off there of course! 😉
What is Vernissage supposed to be an alternative to I wonder ?
Basically Pixelfed - both focus on images but Vernissage has, IMHO, a more artistic and photographer-based approach showing camera models, lens, exposure and also GPS-tags if you want to.
