Posting slowness issue seems solved!
Thanks to a comment by @[email protected] , I checked and saw that 'Federation debugging' mode was enabled. I had enabled that when the server just started (less than 3 weeks ago) and I had an issue with federation.
I thought I had switched that off again, but apparently not. This mode causes the federation to be done in the foreground, so your 'Post' or 'Comment' action will wait for that to finish...
This solves the most annoying issue, and makes the site way more useable. There are many other issues, but we'll get there.

Nice!
Sure is!
Thanks for all your work!
So this instance was able to accommodate 33k users in debug mode, epic ! This deserves a meme :-)
That seems to have solved the upvote issue as well!
Was that what caused the timeout error on Jerboa after up-voting ?
I think it was, I don't have that issue anymore.
My brain has also been operating slower than usual recently. Please fix.
Seriously though, keep up the good work! 👍
At least it was only for a few weeks and didn't live in production for years 😂
19 days to be exact!
Clearly a case of "can't see the wood for the trees" corking work there 👍😀
In the case of logging sillyness it definitely feels something like
this is what mine usually look like...
Appreciate your work as always.
Seems to have fixed the Jerboa for Lemmy timeout issue!
So much faster now, thank you! It's always solved by some random setting you forgot to change.
The best part about lemmy.world is how open and hard working our dev team is! Thank you!
Oh yeah, it’s WAY better now
Cool! I’ve noticed a significant improvement this morning!
Yes things seem a lot snappier!
Now you can commit!
But when can I push?
After you define your origin!
git push origin --forceDocker commit?
Oh man I thought that was "Just how Lemmy is…" and resigned myself to baby-sitting my posts.
Thanks for checking and correcting the issue!
BTW, as a sprout on Lemmy.world is there an official "Bug Report" mechanism we should be using?
Maybe we should create a community
This is that community. It supposed to be the
metacommunity for announcements and questions about the server. The memes and random junk here is all off-topic, I hope the mods get it under control because it makes it impossible to help anyone with questions or track server announcements.
Great work Ruud!
Excellent news good job.
Thx you for the quick fix !
Great, performance is definitely improved!
Yeah, it does feel a lot better already. Thanks for your work maintaining this instance!
Thank you so much ☺️
Awesome! Things feel noticeably smoother on Jerboa this morning. That explains it!
Appreciate you and your team's diligence. I'm glad lemmy.world is where I crash landed.
Edit: Wow that comment posted like 5x faster... Definitely an improvement!
Thanks for the care and attention to the community!
Sweet thank you
May all future issues be solved as easily.
I do feel that lemmy.world is much more comfy now!
Amazing! Thanks for all your hard work.
Cheers! Thank you for all your hard work maintaining the instance.
I can definitely tell there is improvement. Thank you for the hard work! This place is great thanks to you and all the others like you!
Where is that flag set? At build time?
No in the admin page
This is awesome. This isn't even our final form 😎
Omg thank goodness that was annoying me
Me too!
Posting to say thank you! and not testing at all
Congrats!
Actually I am testing comment speed, but still congrats.
And?
Started getting 404 as soon as I tried to reply to you. Now looks to be working (haven't checked for a while).
Faster, definitelly.
Aight it's faster now, but not super fast yet. Congrats anyway :D
I'm also here to test it.
[Edit] For me, in this instance, it worked very fast compared to the past few days.
Great news! Now you just need to post this to /m/programminghumor 🤣 Thank you!
thank you for all your efforts.
Nice! Do you notice any change in other metrics? CPU/Memory usage?
Off-topic: @[email protected], what is the best way to report someone to the instance admin, in order to get them banned from the instance?
It seems to use a bit less CPU.
You should just report the post/comment they made. The community mods as well as the admins will receive the report. If it's really bad, you could e-mail [email protected]
Hooray! And thank you.
Are you aware that creating a new account sometimes gets a spinner that seems to hang forever too? Is that related?
As far as I know that can have 3 causes:
Could you have a look at https://lemmy.world/u/limbodev? I tried setting it up last night and got the spinner and no confirmation email. I can see the account was created, but get the spinner if I try to log on to it.
Hmm there's something wrong with that account.. investigating..
I've been trying to create a few accounts on different servers today (not for spam, for dev work :-) and it seems to me that this is happening primarily when I try to create accounts from Safari. If I fire up Chrome everything runs correctly, so this may be a UI issue rather than backend. I don't know if that helps or hinders...
If you are able to reset or delete limbodev, that would be appreciated!
Excellent news. Thanks for your continued work.
Thanks for the update!
Ah, yep, left the debug on. An understandable oversight, if I had a nickel for how many times I've forgotten that...
You'd have a nickel and a handle of.pocket lint?
I'd be able to bury Bezos in nickels, on his back preferably
Thank you for all the work you do for this instance!
Thank you Ruud!
Cue Zorro destroying the opponent with Ars Arcanum and Strike Raid.
OMG, I just realized this user's actual handle after doing a re-take. At first I thought it was a nuclear physicist who had discovered the issue!
Hats off to @LargeHardonCollider. This person wins the internet for the day, IMO... ;)
Thanks for the fix ! I also thought it was a general lemmy issue and not a lemmy.world one.
Edit : I seem to still have the "wheel keeps spinning, have to reload to see my comment posted" issue, is that the one you're talking about here ? But tbf it was an issue I even already had on Reddit (mobile web) so I can't be mad 😅
No that should be fixed now...
Test...
Weird then
Its about 1 second to post for me which is so much faster, however I don't see the comment I posted until I refresh the page (Firefox for Android)
Lekker bezig! Thanks!
Wow, i figured that was just a lemmy issue across all instances. Thank you for figuring that out!
Hats off to @[email protected] and @[email protected] !
Let’s fucking gooooo
Ohh wow that's great now. This needs a cross post to whatever the new /r/itttttt
I noticed the slowness when using the api, sometimes it wouldn't even respond, thank you
Thanks for all your efforts, must be quite a challenge when the subscriber numbers treble in a few days.
Hahaha happens :D Working fine now!!
Test, test, 1 2 3
Yup, fixed!
Awesome, thank you for making it work well again!
Great!
Oh good to know!
Thanks, not a test at all.
Test
Seems okay accessed from South East Asia.. thx @[email protected] !
noice
Brilliant, thanks for fixing the issue!
Excellent!
It seems to be okay now but I lost a couple of lengthy replies earlier
That’s fantastic news. Thanks for solving it so quickly!
I'm also experiencing slowness with upvotes. Would this also be impacted?
Aaaaaaand let’s see
Yep much better ty
thanks!
I can't seem to create any posts.
Glad it is fixed. The site already feels way faster!
Testing.
E: Seems to work.
Hah! Good job on catching that one!
Thank you Based Ruud
noice!!
It does feel a lot smoother, thank you for your efforts!
I'm testing it now
Edit: wow, works wonders now
Comment test 1 2 3 tset tnemmoC
Excellent, hopefully the snappier site convinces those who were concerned about speed and ease of use to join.
Awesome job, thank you!
Amazing, thank you!
Good info!
takes notes
Thanks for the update, @Ruud, although while we're on the subject of posting issues I have a problem with one particular post that I am trying to add to a community here that I moderate.
Basically, it's a long list of archived Reddit threads that formed the bulk of our subreddit's wiki. Each item in the list has a hyperlink that leads back to a Reddit post.
I have tried to submit it about a dozen times over the past few days and twice again since you made this post, but all I get is the little spinny wheel of eternity and the post is never successful.
Is that because of an issue with external links or something else, do you think?
Edit: ok, apprently it's a known issue with Lemmy.
Maybe a part time solution for now would be to use "just paste" it's a better paste bin alternative and put there all the links in and link only to just paste
Yeah I could, but I'd prefer to have the list local to lemmy.world so users here can browse through the index locally.
It's not a huge deal, but I was more wondering why exactly the post isn't being accepted by the lemmy.world server.
Might be still a early limitation or simply bug. Maybe contact the lemmy Devs I think they are on github
I cannot create post since ~24h( could this be related ? )
Tried 2 browsers on Android.
ok, now i can ... yet not at :
[email protected]
BTW : Congratulations to
@Ruudand to
@[email protected]Have you tried changing the language to english?
I had the same problem just now when trying to reply to a post.
Yeah, I tried that.
Thanks.
Thank you for the fix!
I'm not able to post to c/news since I just get a spinner icon forever. No one else has posted there for the past day either, and there has been plenty of news since then. I've been able to post to some other communities. So something seems to be wrong specifically with c/news which surprisingly isn't a highly active community like its reddit (or should I say deaddit) counterpart.
I just tested and I can post there... Can you maybe retry (perhaps in a fresh browser window?)
it seems to happen at random , wasnt able to post on 3 different comments in a post ( endless circle ) even swapped VPN servers / cleared cookies and cache and relogged .
30 min later was fixed. maybe some hiccups still from federating.
👏
👍
Test
Edit: ohmygosh that's nice and smooth
I found an odd bug.
I tried creating a comment on a pc browser here:
https://lemmy.world/post/188235?scrollToComments=true
And had the endless circle.
Used Jerboa on android and it gave an error: "that language is not allowed". So I went back to the browser and chose english and it worked.
I can post on other posts, though.
That happens when replying to people on instances with strict languages rules (e.g. Kbin)
I hope the language chooser will be UI wise fixed. It is not really usable.
It should be, it's definitely annoying.
Happens specially if you run such a service which literarily explodes so fast.
What a shitty remark for a service that doesn't cost you a thing
