What old movies hold up because of a lack of special effects or because clever use of effects?

The "Despecialized" editions are the best right now. I appreciate what Lucas wanted to do in the 90s but I wish he'd just left the originals alone.

This is the best explanation for why this happens that I've ever read.

I heard about it on Freakonomics, and having been both a creative and a manager it really hits home.

Thanks, it's a great watch. Nixon Heat A1320. Simple, digital, not smart. I love it.

Lol, the lawn only looks so nice because it's not in focus. It's actually pretty patchy right there.

What are you watching and what do you recommend this week?

I haven't seen Slow Horses, but Dept Q was phenomenal. Reminded me of Luther with a bit of Broadchurch.

Looking for recommendations for good Sci-Fi mystery novels
Might not be an exact fit, but maybe Old Man's War by John Scalzi. It's not a mystery per se, but there is definitely an element of "what's actually going on here" for the main character to sort out.

It's just a store brand from Lowe's. Honestly I didn't know nozzles were such a thing until this post.

What book(s) are you currently reading or listening to? August 12
The Book that Held her Heart by Mark Lawrence. It's book three in his Library trilogy which is just a fantastic mix of sci-fi, fantasy, library sciences and a bit of grimdark for variety. It's been a fun series and this is another good entry.

Show it off! The biggest problem I had was that I couldn't find the gears for the arms. I used some that were almost the same but just a bit larger so I had to make the shoulders slightly taller to fit them. But that was a fun challenge.

It was fun, but idk if I'll rebuild another set until I have a good way to sort everything out. I'd love to put the Mege Core Magnetizer back together, but that's twice as many pieces to find...

Starter Villain might also scratch that itch for you, but to be honest, I'm just a big Scalzi fan. Kaiju Preservation Society and When the Moon Hits Your Eye were a lot of fun too.
