I'm picturing one of these bipedal robots carrying a ripped, dripping garbage bag all the way through the house, hobbling along in that slow, wobbly gait they have, struggling with the doorknob for 5 minutes and eventually arriving at the sidewalk bin 20 minutes later to deposit a soggy mostly empty bag and then spending the rest of the day attempting to gather all the trash from the ground in this mysterious trail of garbage that leads from the sidewalk all the way back to the garbage can.

Had a gen z coworker once who was a little mind-blown when I pointed out that the squeaky boots episode of SpongeBob is just "The Tell-Tale Heart." Usually any time I've tried to share that fun fact, anyone who's already familiar with both stories has already connected the dots. It was pretty fun to witness the "holy shit it IS the same story" realization in real time.

I watched an extended breakdown on YouTube of this dude who's been an absolute villain of the Skyrim modding scene for like over a decade. I honestly can't recommend anyone watch it because it'll just make you angry. I was happily playing modded Skyrim for years without knowing anything about him. After I learned of his existence, I realized that some of the issues I'd had with modding Skyrim over the years were actually deliberately caused by this guy when I'd assumed it was due to the general flakiness of modding.

Yup that's the one. If you've got the stomach for it, by all means go ahead. For me, I kinda regretted watching it after because despite being a well-made video, I realized that all I was left with afterward was a lingering anger and and an unintentionally curated list of things that will probably remind me of that douchebag every time I play Skyrim from now on.

The Skyrim modding anecdote I mentioned isn't related to the story from this post. I see now my wording is a little unclear on that. This post just reminded me of the Skyrim thing.

I know there are scams that convince people to install malicious apps that steal crypto or whatever. So long as there's always a workaround, I guess I'm not super opposed to protecting people who are... easily scammed. I don't like the waiting period part though.

Gonna be pretty embarrassing when people still get scammed even with this feature in place. I've already heard stories of some old person buying like $2500 worth of gift cards and the cashier, who has been prepped for this exact scenario, is powerless to stop them.

"Is someone telling you to buy these gift cards to settle a payment?"

"....n. n. no I need them for Christmas gifts."

"It's common for scammers to tell people to lie about why they're buying the gift cards. If someone told you to say that to me, they're lying to you. No legitimate business or government agency will require you to settle a payment using gift cards."

*clearly nervous but also now getting angry*
"No I need these for my grandkids!"

*sighs. Starts scanning cards*

One time I was in the ER, and a doctor noted that my heart beat has a rather pronounced split s2 rythm which is something that doctors need to learn to discern when listening to a heartbeat, so for the next hour as I was waiting around, I had several other younger physicians stop by and say "hey I was told to come listen to your heartbeat."

Made me feel a little special in a very peculiar way I haven't known since.

This controversy over tesseract finally got me to do a bit more reading to understand how federation actually works and what a frontend does. Now I understand why everyone is so pissed.

The email metaphor has been the most useful to me in understanding how this works. Someone tell me if I've got this right. Basically, you have your lemmy account, which belongs to the instance you created it on, like how a gmail account belongs to Google. You can use whatever frontend you like to view your feed, just like you could use Outlook to view your Gmail account. Tesseract is a frontend, kinda like Outlook in the metaphor. In theory, a frontend should deliver to you everything that would appear on your lemmy instance no matter where you access it from, but now the tesseract frontend is basically making content filtering decisions about what users, topics, and instances you have access to. It would be like if your Outlook app suddenly decided "ew, you shouldn't be using your Gmail to talk to any of those yahoo mail people, and also it's now forbidden to use Outlook to discuss seahorses."

So all the posts, users, and instances are still there, it's just that the dev of your frontend decided that you shouldn't interact with those users or discuss those topics anymore. Worse still, they surreptitiously tried to hide all of this new filtering among other features that are needed for spam and whatnot, leading people to think something was actually broken.

Do I have that right?

I mean, it makes sense. The manosphere is above all else, a grift. If someone who's listening to the podcasts and buying the online courses actually gets a girlfriend and realizes how stupid it all is, they're not going to keep giving the grifters money. The point is to keep them single, angry, and blaming women.

My favorite example of this.

Hint: George Lucas has stated in the most plain-English unambiguous terms that the empire does in fact represent US imperialism in A New Hope. It's in a director chat interview thing with with James Cameron if you feel like searching it up.

My favorite part about Death Note is that the whole point of the series is "Nobody could be trusted with a power such as this and the existence of such a thing would only lead to ruin," but every single person who watches it, including me, can only think "yeah, but if I had that power, I would weild it responsibly and only use it to fix things."

I was messing around with a steetview app one time and I was pretty fascinated by the fact that basically anywhere on the globe, clicked at random, looks incredibly similar to somewhere that I've been. Click randomly in Ukraine, "huh, I've definitely been on country back roads in the US that look basically just like this." Click a spot in Kazakhstan, I've seen places in the Midwest that look pretty similar. Click something in a more tropical spot in search of something altogether different, "you know I've been to some coastal towns that look a lot like this." Click a spot in a French mountain range, "This doesn't look all that different from parts of the Rockies."

It brings to mind one of my favorite quotes:

It's a good platform, but it absolutely does not cover the same breadth of content as YouTube. To me, Nebula feels a bit more like old-school discovery channel before it got all crappy. I pay for Nebula, but I still watch 99% of my online video on YouTube. Of the range of different types of content I watch on YouTube, I'd say Nebula covers about 5% of it. It is pretty nice for when a creator is dealing with copyright bullshit on YouTube, but I can still watch the video on Nebula.

I have a bad feeling that apple is going to release a pair of smart glasses and all of the social momentum of discouraging wearing these things will be lost overnight.

The first night I owned an air fryer, I tossed in some shitty frozen tater tots that had been in my freezer for way too long, and they came out so delightfully crispy that I cooked two more servings.

I realized immediately that this would be a problem. It's a bit too easy to make delicious stuff that's pretty bad for me. I nearly made myself sick of wings within like 2 weeks. That was a close one. Fuckin love wings.

As an American, I don't understand how anyone can be proud of our "founding principles" without also being deeply ashamed of our failure to live up to them. It fucking hurts to live with this much hypocrisy, and I'm not the one getting snatched off the fucking street. Better just keep absorbing as much info as possible lest I feel guilty for ignoring it...
