macOS 27 now has a thing where if you quit an app (actually quit with cmd+q, not just close the window with the red button) it will stay in the Dock labelled "running in background" if sneakily keeps running.
I hate apps that don't close when you close them, and you have to go through a bunch of sub menus to shut them down, or confirm it multiple times.. I also hate when apps have taskbar icons for absolutely no reason. It's a big peeve of mine
Oh im even one more step further, I don't mind that the functionality exists, or that it's the default behaviour, but.. the amount of stuff that doesn't have the option to disable that behaviour, now that gets me riled up
Had a gen z coworker once who was a little mind-blown when I pointed out that the squeaky boots episode of SpongeBob is just "The Tell-Tale Heart." Usually any time I've tried to share that fun fact, anyone who's already familiar with both stories has already connected the dots. It was pretty fun to witness the "holy shit it IS the same story" realization in real time.
I am familiar with the telltale heart, but not squeaky boots episode. However, I can gather that squidward likely was going fucking insane because SpongeBob had squeaky boots.
My newer computer you can't even well tell what programs are using what cpu because task manager is now nearly worthless now. I imagine it's on purpose given the enshitification of everything especially tech.
Even in Win 10. Computer is chugging > open task manager > sort CPU by highest to lowest > top 3 programs are using ~60% CPU then it plummets to 0.1% CPU usage for the rest of the list.
Yes, i am sure that i have 40,000 programs running at 0.1%...

It took somebody showing me to finally understand what was going on when I first used one back in college
It’s just a different mindset, it has been that way since system 7.
With a modern macOS, you just look for the little dot in the dock or use command-tab to switch through and quit what you don’t want running.
I've had to use mac for work for the last few years and, when I got it, I was super confused. Well, I still am (or angry) generally, but y'know.

There are legitimate reasons to keep a background task around, like SyncThing. There are illegitimate reasons too, like Discord.

I have like 3 dozen games installed so there are updates frequently enough that I am good with it doing its thing.
Plus I get the little popup when a friend starts a game so we can join up.
Pretty sure there is an option to close it for real when you close the window, so it is a choice.
Steam with its memory-hogging chromium instance that still runs when the window is ”closed”.

I want some apps to minimize to tray rather than close, but it should absolutely be an option in the prefs.
I'm looking at you music players. If I click that red x it doesn't mean hide in the flipping volume control on the taskbar and keep playing!
