Self-hosting Doesn't Actually Save You Money, And The People Who Promise It Does Are Setting Beginners Up To Quit

Huh?! My server and a 8tb external hdd costed me 40k inr (bought 1.5 years ago). It consumes less than 200-300inr worth of electricity per month. With that I am self-hosting Immich, Jellyfin, Paperless-ngx, Vaultwarden (Used by 7-8 users with family organisation), Firefly-iii, linkwarden, a central syncthing nodes which is synced with my client devices, media tracker, arr stack with qbittorrent. With a Proton VPN subscription of 7.5k inr/year and backblaze for cloud backs about 150inr per month, it costs me just ~10k (~100usd) a year in runnings costs for subscriptions worth of 50-60k a year. With those savings I can literally buy a really good Moped every 2-3 years. Granted my nvme in the server is due replacement in a year because it is a lower quality one and has already worn out by 40%. But it definitely saves a ton of money when you have cheap electricity.

Am I the only one bothered by this?

A lot of marketing material for a product is provided by the manufacturers of a product. Small shops, at-least from my knowledge, don’t have the resources to create marketing material. So blaming them doesn’t really work unless they are making their own products (like restaurants, hand-crafted items, etc).

Why?

I use these on all my cables both ends. This cable is 5 years old and still strong. Costed me 1 rupee per piece. Got a pack of 100 for 100rs (~1 us dollar)

Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them

Reply in thread

Ooohh, don’t think corpos and banks won’t go for that hypothetical. A lot of apps already turn haywire if you have developer options enabled, accessibility options enabled, have a specific installed or using a custom ROM. If the optional attestation is enforced by your bank that they only accept passkeys from google’s password manager or apple passwords, then using something like Keepass or Bitwarden isn’t an option.

Look… I love passkeys. They are convenient and more secure. But if a service cares about on what device and software it was created then it is pointless and just an ecosystem lockdown mechanism.

Creator of free Adobe clones unveils open-source Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word replications — Autodesk tools and other subscription-based services may come next

You don't know Indian small-mid businesses lol. They already pirate a lot of stuff. Adobe and Corel are very strict here—if they find out you are using an unlicensed version of their software, they send legal notices to pay a shit ton for the damages and buy the licensed one for a lock-in period before even suing. Most, if not all, give in because there is no way out of this. Yet a lot of them are willing to take this risk as the potential savings are much higher than the losses if caught.

If these businesses get a grey zone free product, they will happily switch. Big corpos will mostly not.

My hot take on the Brave browser

Reply in thread

Alright I got somewhere. It's the DNS. Specifically my Adguard Home setup. By default it uses rate limiting of 20 requests per client. I removed it. And now Firefox is loading as fast as Brave was loading it previously.

Although websites on Brave are still loading much faster, Firefox is now pretty usable. A few hundred ms difference is fine for me. The slowdown started happening since Firefox 150ish so probably something changed then that affected Firefox but Chromium based browsers worked fine. IDK what but for now removing rate limiting works for me. Hopefully my router won't crash because of this. Thanks for the help. Also if I use Firefox DoH with custom Controld endpoint, everything loads at lightening speed. But I can't use it as there are DNS rewrites in my Adguard Home which allows me to access my services w/o typing the IP all the time.

My hot take on the Brave browser

Reply in thread

Sorry I was out for a vacation. Here you go.

This is firefox

This is Brave origin.

Even though some things do load after 5s in brave as well, a website is instantly usable on Brave while Firefox takes the whole time to load it. The Firefox install above is a fresh one with just uBlock Origin. On Brave I have set it up to clear cache and browsing history on exit so nothing is being loaded from cache. No login used for the website tested in both browsers. On reddit as well usually, it takes Firefox around 12s to actually for it to be usable. While for Brave it is usually around 8s.

‘Cockroach’ party leaders say India is ‘at war with its citizens’ as protests enter second day

No matter how much you protest here, the large unaware population will always elect a politician who is always in limelight for all the wrong reasons (rape, hate speeches, murder, ties with the underworld). And those politicians want to keep these folks poor and unaware as their numbers are huge and it is easy to sway their votes literally one night before an election by giving them 5k inr (~50 usd) cash or a chicken biryani and a beer feast.
