The difference between wall-e and eve makes me think of cars. How old and even some modern combustion cars are built well and engineered to be highly modular and user serviceable. EVs are highly proprietary. They rely on closed systems that can’t practically be serviced without special equipment.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m NOT a fan of fossil fuels at all. I just don’t like how cars have been slowly morphing into proprietary unreliable cellphone-like commodities, or how the push towards EVs seems to be accelerating that trend.

It’s a poor definition because gift exchanges are strictly voluntary and non-reciprocal engagements. I’m not saying what he did was ok or even legal in other contexts. My only point is that I wouldn’t consider this fraud because the victims were not compelled to give. This isn’t a Nigerian prince scam where the victims were promised greater returns at a later date. These victims gave with the expectation of monetary loss.

I started reading because I saw the picture and expected to learn about some pangolin themed dog costume. The actual post has somehow surpassed my expectations and disappointed me at the same time. Idk what to do with that but it’s shaping up to be a wild day on the internet.

I'm very Jesus-like

Memes about the suffering of the innocent don’t actually help either. If your feeds were just a firehose of misery you are ultimately powerless to change, all that would do is hurt you.

I’m not saying we should be ignoring the wrongs of the world. All I’m saying is that there is a time and a place for moths.

‘Hollow Knight: Silksong’ Gets September Release Date After Seven Years in Development (Gaming News Roundup)

Reply in thread

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think this is a bit harsh. Personally I respect the devs for going silent. I’m glad they took however long they wanted to perfect the project. No doubt their silence has cost them but I would rather see that than see them constantly putting out bits to try and keep the hype alive. It’s more honest and respectable this way, and the game itself will be better for it.

Perspective

At the top-left corner of the image we see a support bracket for the hand rail. The orientation of this bracket only seems to make sense if we are at the bottom of the stairs looking up at the mattress. The shadow cast by the mattress also looks like the light is above and slightly closer to the camera.

If we were at the top looking down, that would imply that the hand rail brackets were sideways instead of being vertical, and that the light was mounted on the wall instead of the ceiling. I have seen stranger things in construction but it would still be strange and unlikely.

What are the biases of Lemmy?

IMHO Lemmy feels similar to how Reddit felt 10-15 years ago. The community seems closer to my age. The population is smaller. The content is less formulaic.

The biases shown here feel like a distillation of the broader internet (similar to what Reddit used to be). We like animals and nature, we hate intrusive powerful forces like large corporations or invasive governments. We share a shit-post-y sense of humor. We tend to lean left politically. We love to feel like we know more than we actually do.

On any given subject, if you ask “What would the internet think about this?” you will probably find that same opinion reflected strongly here.

If you were talking about someone else, you would probably say something along the lines of “everyone deserves to be loved” so when you start being down on yourself, just remember that though means one of two things:

Either you really are somehow the worst human being who ever lived and somehow the first who truly doesn’t deserve to be loved, or your brain is just being mean right now.

What's the weirdest thing you're upset about?

Who decides when a species becomes naturalized / stops being invasive? As an example, the European Starling has been living in North America since 1890 and are still considered invasive. They have natural predators. The ecosystem is adapting around them. Just let them have citizenship already!

Another thing: Taxonomy. Just all taxonomy. If a shark and a trout are both fish then we must also be fish because both of those animals are closer relatives to us than they are to each other. Obviously the way we define a fish has to change. Why has nobody done this? There are a TON of things like this in taxonomy and that all make me absurdly angry.

What do you think can be done to improve the starwars brand?

Hot take:

End it… Just canonize a subset of the lore, remake that subset from beginning to end so it tells one concise story, and let it be done.

The real problem with Star Wars is that the lore keeps getting milked. It isn’t a story at all anymore. It’s just an IP. A cash cow to be milked. A dead horse for beating. Nothing they change now will fix that unless they uproot everything and remake it into something respectable.

What wisdom from someone else has stuck with you?

Idk who said them first but I’ll never forget the men who gave me these two things:

  • You are never out of options until you choose to stop looking for them.

And

  • Money comes and money goes but it is never worth fighting about. (The guy who gave me this one was going through an awful divorce and had a lot of regrets about how he handled things. I think that context matters here.)
