What is wage theft exactly?

Some easy examples you can relate to:

  • do you work overtime, even for a minute, and don't get paid for it? Wage theft!
  • does your company make fun of people using their allowed days off, making you not use them? Wage theft!
  • does your company make you buy tools required for your job, because the ones available are shit or non existant? Wage theft!
  • does your boss call you during your days off, holidays or vacations? Wage theft!
  • are you assigned tasks that are more suited to a higher compensation level, but don't see a dime? Wage theft!
  • are your coffee and lunch breaks interrupted early or entirely canceled and not compensated? Again, wage theft!

Yeah I have the same impression. In one of his last videos, the one about Pompeii he advised against kids watching because a cartoonish dick showed on a wall. I'd agree, kids shouldn't watch, not because the dick, but his sickening puritism.

What are the craziest misconceptions you’ve heard about programming from people not familiar with it?

Doesn't happen as much, but family and non tech friends would present me to other people that "worked with computers" thinking I could take new job opportunities. They were always wildly unrelated to my field.

I know I know,.. they acted in good faith, and probably could have adapted a bit, but like 30 years ago there was a lot of overlap and systems where somewhat similar, but now somebody trained in Linux kernel maintenance isn't going to learn how to create SharePoint SPFx webparts. Development is very specific now!

What are the silliest reasons people have given you for not wanting to try Linux?

Most silly excuse was my boss refusing to install Linux because he just had a friend give him original windows 98se licenses for the PCs we just bought for the company.

Well it gets less silly thinking that getting the eprom programmer software and orcad 4 working on Linux was probably impossible.

Then it was outright the best decision ever, because those machines never required a reinstall and worked flawless for the 5 years I was there working. Never understood the bad rep W98Se had. Never used it on my personal rigs of course.

Why is WhatsApp so ubiquitous everywhere BUT North America?

Spain here. Because calling and messaging (sms/mms) were quite expensive. And still are.

It was somewhere around 2010 when my wife was explaining how one of her coworkers used this application to send messages for free. We installed it and it caught on like fire mouth to mouth. People changed their phones to smartphones just to join the bandwagon. It was wild.

What are some common misconceptions about programming that you'd like to debunk?

Myth: code can be ugly as long as it works, don't spend company time on making it look good or on minor optimizations.

The truth is that you can tell when effort has been put into a job. Even if it just works, the lack of discipline means that in the end it will be difficult to maintain and probably will fail in unexpected situations.

Every language has its conventions, but if I spot more than a line of separation between blocks of code, that is a common telltale sign of noob. Run from that shit.

Feature parity or get out

My kid (13) surprised me the other day and said he wanted to try Linux. He has seen me forever using it and got scared about W10 getting hacked or something so thought of trying it out.

I handed over to him my Fedora 43 (KDE plasma) install USB drive and once installed the problems began.

The monitor couldn't be set to native resolution, and Steam didn't want to run. Turns out that there is no wayland compatibility with the Radeon Polaris RX480. What a bummer, that card is perfectly fine for what he does on his PC.

We tried with the cinnamon version and that is working fine. He even has roblox running.

Tl;Dr: Wayland isn't compatible with older hardware that most casual windows users are mostly going to be using.
