I was interested in an artist's specific critiques of GIMP.

I can give my very vague hazy input, as someone who used to be an artist. I used GIMP many years ago when I just started digital art, since it was a free image program (and Krita didn't exist at the time). This must have been fifteen years ago or more. I distinctly remember using GIMP to "trace" over my scanned pencil/ink physical art to make digital art, since I didn't have a drawing tablet at the time. I did a decent amount of drawings in GIMP this way, and therefore feel like I must have "got the hang of" the UI during this period of time. So GIMP was the first image manipulation program I used and I used it a lot, so therefore, I would say that means I should have built up some kind of "intuition" or memory on how to use it.

Then, I got a drawing tablet. I don't remember at the time of GIMP had pressure sensitivity or not. But I do remember that around the time I got my Wacom tablet, I figured out how to... 🏴‍☠️ acquire 🦜 Photoshop. I then basically abandoned GIMP for Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI to draw digital art fully rather than scanning in physical drawings.

Now, not long after, maybe a few/several months later, my mother asked me about needing an image manipulation program. I told her about GIMP, and helped install it for her. Then she eventually came by and asked me how to do some relatively simple image manipulation task — I can't remember exactly, but say something like "rotate a part of an image" — and I told her "oh no problem!" and took her laptop to show her how to do it and... I completely forgot and couldn't even figure it out. Nothing I tried to do that I felt like should have done the simple image manipulation task got me close to doing it. I think the furthest I got was making a "dancing ants" selection but couldn't do a rotate for the life of me (or whatever I had to do). And I'm sure I tried to search Google on how to do it and it didn't help. I eventually got flustered and told her that I had no idea how to do it, and I was pretty embarrassed, considering I had formerly used this program so much for my initial start into digital art.

I think about this memory whenever GIMP UI discussions come up. To me, the fact that I so quickly forgot how to do something so basic not that long after I stopped using it suggests there is something unintuitive about the way things are set up in GIMP. I will go long stints not using Photoshop since I don't really do much art anymore, and yet when I come back, I'll remember how to things, or if I do forget something, the menu l'll find it in makes sense to me. As to what and why something doesn't feel right, I unfortunately can't articulate it well, though I'm sure that's because of how long ago it's been at this point. And one issue about something being intuitive vs not is that it makes it difficult to explain why something "feels right" or doesn't.

Granted, I have seen news that GIMP has recently updated its UI again, and I am curious about trying to out, especially since I heard they're requesting feedback.

Yeah, Photoshop has this. Makes it easy to edit GIFs for memes, as GIFs get split into each frame.

From what I'd read about it, search engines have become kinda shit, focusing on SEO and paid sponsored results than actually showing what someone searched for, so some small websites form webrings to help people find similar websites/interests while they're on their site. I think it's pretty cute/fun.

The Costco near me used to have one single line for all lanes of self checkout machines, it was great. Then some months ago they switched it to a line per lane and I hate it so much. I think it's just stupid "perceptions" — people probably just "feel like" it takes longer when it's one long line, so they're happy to wait longer in a shorter line because visually "their turn is coming soon."

Windows 11 feels awful to use. My home laptop whirrs like crazy because it feels the need to download updates so often. There's a bunch of creepy processes/tasks running all the time. I tried to disable as many as I could, but some they prevent users from deleting. You don't want your laptop to run the "UsageAndQualityInsights" task every day? Well TOO BAD!

Windows 11 forces updates whenever it can. If I close the lid on my laptop, which should put it in a light sleep, I will sometimes open it up to it being restarted, so all my previously open programs being closed, because I guess they wanted to forcefully make me get their latest updates, potential unsaved work be damned. They don't care at all what you want, just "too bad, we know what's best for you."

There are so many basic bugs that I'm surprised exist. I have to use ExplorerPatcher to get some sense of normalcy back. The UI in some ways is so frustrating. Every time I want to use the calendar, it shows a giant empty blob for "notifications", even though I disable all notifications... why still show me this waste of space? I just want a calendar when I click the date...

I was shocked to find out that the inability to drag files onto applications in order to do basic drag-and-drop functionality is not a thing anymore. Why?! (I think ExplorerPatcher fixes this on my home laptop, but on my work laptop which also uses Windows 11 I am baffled by this every time I forget and try to drag a file onto a taskbar icon.)

It sucks having to constantly look up various tips, tricks, and hacks to make the operating system slightly bearable in all these little ways. "Here's how you can disable OneDrive which apparently had a habit of removing people's files whoopsie, here's how you can disable Copilot which had a super helpful feature where it literally just snapshots pictures of your screen all the time haha how helpful and totally not creepy, here's how you can bring back the normal right-click menu." But it only can do so much, and it's exhausting.

I feel like it's not "my computer," it feels like the most "Big Brother" operating system ever; it always feels like "something" is watching me or lurking in the background reporting back to some giant Microsoft data center on what I'm doing, what my files are, etc. It's just this really creepy feeling. I feel "gross" when I use it.

I wish I could have Windows 10, but I know that's basically not an option anymore. I want to switch to Linux, but I'm not techy enough and worried I'll fail at switching over. I am slowly working up the courage to try to install Linux Mint, as that sounds like the most beginner-coming-from-Windows-friendly distro of Linux.

I don't think most of them would ever vote blue. They are too much wrapped in "red vs blue team sports" identity politics. At best, they will simply sit out the election, which would still help.

It seems poorly worded. I think they were trying to say that the person's interpretation of what happened is a fact. Basically that someone can't handwave away how a person says they feel as if it's not true; how a person says they genuinely felt about something is true to them. I assume it is supposed to be targeted towards estranged parents who constantly dismissed their child's emotions and literally cannot understand how that is a bad thing to do.

Any death penalty charges were thrown out a while ago iirc. I think life in prison is the max he can get now.

It feels sad that I felt relief that he didn't win. That's how low my faith is in the electorate at this point.
