People who say “Reesees” when referring to “Reese’s” candy are idiots.

Have you once in your life seen the name Reese and pronounced the silent “E” at the end? Have you ever met a person named Reesee?

I’ll do you one better…People that say REESEES PEESEES. When the fuck have you ever said peesees when you read the word pieces.

If you do this, you are beyond stupid.

I did know someone named Reesee. And a person named Reesé too

I'm upvoting both because I agree with you and because I believe we're petty enough to still be in the minority. I think this is an unpopular opinion because most people don't care.

The revolution starts at home. First we eradicate mispronunciation. Then we work our way towards people who sneeze entirely too loudly. Then on to fascism.

I’ll do you one better…People that say REESEES PEESEES.

lmao it's me

You used to do it because playing with words is fun. Now you also do it to annoy op

I could have sworn that they pronounced it "Reesees" in the commercials, so I went to double check and I was wrong. All official commercials that I've found they pronounce it "Reese's". This has me wondering where I heard the "Reesees" pronunciation. It must be some social thing, a dialect or accent around where I've grown up, or even just linguistic drift. Etymology is weird like that.

16

Maybe it's from E.T.? Been years since I've seen it so I don't remember how they say it, though Reese's Pieces play a large role in the plot

Weird hill to even have a gentle discomfort on, let alone die on.

You’re on Lemmy. A site where where furries and anime masturbators go when Reddit isn’t weird enough, and you’re going to call my post weird?

Please…

Yeah. Getting that bent out of shape over something so pointless?

I think it’s your inability to understand social context. Again, this is Lemmy, so I’ll assume you’re on the spectrum.

I understand social context just fine. What I don’t understand being unnecessarily angry over such mundane things.

0
lemmy.world

I’m not angry. It’s in jest. You just don’t understand that because you’re being pedantic and bland.

Yeahs because SO many people find themselves saying:

“If you do this you are beyond stupid”

…when they’re just in jest.

But you go on and hide behind accusing me of being… “pedantic and bland” if it helps you to backpedal.

1

Oh my god. Go away dork. You’re so upset about something online that you harass someone. Pot calling the kettle black.

The funny thing I've found is that they don't even realize they're doing it. So I ask them how to say the name "Reese" and they'll do it right. Then I'll ask what the possessive form of the name is and they'll say it correctly. The lightbulb moment is always really funny, but they still decide to be a fuckass and say it wrong anyway.

5
lemmy.world

That's the thing. When have you ever looked at the word "pieces" outside of candy and read it as "PEE-SEES"?

Gerrymander should be more like 'gary' than 'jerry'.

Halley's comet's namesake pronounced it more like hall-y if I recall right.

Think of it as a nickname

lemmy.world

Your reveals your regard for the English language.

Edit: I fucked a word.

1

Ironically one of the highest-profile people to say it wrong is Travis Kelce, who routinely says it incorrectly on his podcast, even when Reese's became a sponsor of his podcast.

It's extra ironic because his own name became commonly mispronounced by announcers and the general public. Almost every reference to him pronounces it "Kel SEE" but his name is more correctly said with a hard stop as in the word "rice".

Yeah those peanut butter cups really make my type 2 diabeeteez hurt but still better than having type 1 diabeetus and having to take a shot of lantisss (spelled lantus but have never heard a dr or pharmacist call it anything but lantiss.

Edit: Its the primary reason i switched to using Rezvxzoglgxzoglr

1
lemmy.world

In 1897 the original inventor of the peanut butter cup, Girontius Reesy, immigrated to the USA. The immigration officer incorrectly copied his name as Reese. He adopted the new name as written but when speaking, his family and friends continued to call themselves Reesy. The custom stuck with many people, and even after a century, and after being sold to candy conglomerates, the custom remains alive.

Im not sure how to vote. I just don't feel anyone could possibly care enough for it to be popular or unpopular. I mean I guess unpopular but not so much because others disagree. More no one cares. I mean in the us people are being grabbed off the streets.

1

Yeah, I also wallow in unthinking misery, can someone tell me what my opinion should be here?

Now talk about people who pluralize mass nouns with an S; like happies, harms, mails and e-mails. Because the 4th grade was so long ago.

1

You are quite wrong.

Wiktionary:

  • happy (plural happies)
  • harm (countable and uncountable, plural harms)
  • mail (countable and uncountable, plural mails)
  • email (countable and uncountable, plural emails)

Compared to a mass noun

  • sheep (countable and uncountable, plural sheep or (nonstandard, humorous or childish) sheeps)

In some constructions all of those act as mass nouns, but not enough to be mass nouns

Is email a mass noun? How do you say I received two emails? I guess you can use "messages" but these typically refer to instant messaging while "letters" refer to physical mail.

3

Yeah they are wrong. Email pluralises as emails

Harms is also correct just not in the construction "he did harms to me" (even autocorrect spots that). "Assault and other harms are risked" is fine

4

People who pronounce it as “Reesee’s” invariably seem to be the same ones who mispronounce things like “pellow” or “malk.” Just utterly useless people.

Reesee, or reesey is an actual name. Iirc, resie or ressie is pronounced the same, though I'm not sure which spelling is correct, or if they're variants of the same, or if I'm rmemerbing the spelling entirely wrong.

And you'd be amazed what kind of pronunciations seemingly mundane names can have. Steele, I've seen pronounced still multiple times by different families. Lambert has three that I've run into.

Also, the reesee's peecees thing started as a form of word play and spread from there, it didn't start as a mispronounciation. That was.... aaahhhhh, in the early eighties? Might have been mid eighties that it got fairly popular among kids. But it started after the ET movie. Before that, it was not something I ever heard, though it is possible it happened before then outside of my area. Now, I can't find a clip that supports my memory, but I remember et saying Reese's pieces either in the movie, or a commercial or something.

However, that's where the weird pronunciation came from in my area, kids saying it in an ET mimicking voice. I strongly suspect that this was not the only place it happened.

However, Reesees's cups was an occasional pronunciation before that, or at least my memory is of it being used in my early childhood, say late seventies to early eighties, by adults. Thing is, it was done as an exaggerated thing by my family, not as the actual pronunciation. I'm not aware if they were poking fun at people that did say it that way, or if it was just fun word play (my family runs high to that kind is linguistic tomfoolery). The family members prone to it are too dead to ask, so I'm left with only recollection in that regard.

As a side note, when you can't make an unpopular opinion post without insulting people, it just makes you seem like an asshole. Are you an asshole? If not, maybe reconsider your posting habits. If so, carry on ()*()!

I'm glad you found this post. I hate you.

Bro, I CANNOT value your opinion on this matter. And now I'm laughing out loud trying to pronounce that word.

Everything you've said is false memory and hallucination.

4

Horse shit. I was very clear where my memory is dubious, but the fact of the direct experience of having been alive and aware of language during the era are absolutely accurate.

Hell, Reese's pieces didn't even exist until 78, and were on the road to being discontinued towards when ET came out. You can look that up without relying on me. The movie turned them from an also-ran candy into pop culture. Between the movie itself and the marketing using ET, awareness of and demand for the candy skyrocketed.

Anyone trying to pretend that kids wouldn't fuck around with pronunciation of things has a worse memory than me because that shit is daily for a lot of kids. And it is an absolute fact that when I was a kid at the time, all of us little assholes would run around doing the ET voice with all kinds of quotes from the movie, and with unrelated phrases. "EeeeeTeeeee bone ham" was quite popular in my elementary school. It got to the point that a couple of the teachers flipped their shit over it and were trying to punish kids that did it.
