What AI art reveals

Reply in thread

You're not wrong. But the exact same point could be made about mapping the workflow of 3D printing a custom part to having a machinist prototype it for you.

In both cases, you tell the machine what you want, and it executes it more or less faithfully depending on how well you describe the thing. There is a direct parallel to the 3D printed "art" and copy/paste gizmos slopping up marketplaces--but we rightfully don't claim that the affordability and accessibility of 3D printers is a problem.

What AI art reveals

You're comparing apples and oranges a bit here. Sure, using a robot to lift weights at the gym is analogous to using AI to create art, if your goal is to get better at being an artist.

But if you're a person with no painting or drawing skills who uses AI as a way to express your ideas visually, it would be a little more akin to being a shitty machinist who uses Sketchup and a 3D printer to manifest their mechanical ideas in meatspace.

99% of AI "art" is absolutely a cringey slopfest, but I'm not going to lie and pretend I can't relate at all to people who use it as a tool to supplement their own practical deficiencies. Whether art should be more about the output or the process is a whole other philosophical debate...

What's a scam that's so normalized that we don't even realize it's a scam anymore?

Honestly, just health care in general being locked behind insurance to the point where people conflate the two conceots entirely!

Dental insurance in most cases is closer to what health insurance should be: an entirely optional, and generally affordable, policy that can offset major expenses. Not an expense that rivals housing in magnitude and is required for most people just to access the basic care needed by nearly everyone.

When I see that graphic, I can instantly and vividly taste the not-quite-cold water in a tiny cup from the water cooler at the doctor's office.

I think it's the bit of wax flavor those cups used to have.

Chicago fighting ICE

Holy shit, those were the sketchiest-looking, least-trained, pudgiest, definitely-not-trained, mother-fuckiest, federal agents I've ever seen! Definitely not two racist, assholes from bumfucktucky recruited in the last 6 weeks to drive around in a rental car harassing brown people!

Jesus christ

Fuck ICE

"I love the round things!" - The Doctor

Maybe controversial, but despite the rye chips being far and away my favorite part of Gardettos, I actually prefer the mix because then the rye chips are that much tastier when you hit one.

Or maybe its the same kind of illness/cope that causes me to say things like "I actually enjoy living in the midwest, where we get to experience all 4 seasons, versus someplace that's pleasant and warm all year"

How do you effectively backup your high capacity (20+ TB) local NAS?

Personally I deal with it by prioritizing the data.

I have about the same total size Unraid NAS as you, but the vast majority is downloaded or ripped media that would be annoying to replace, but not disastrous.

My personal photos, videos and other documents which are irreplaceable only make up a few TB, which is pretty managable to maintain true local and cloud backups of.

Not sure if that helps at all in your situation.
